We experimentally investigate the channel estimation and compensation in a chromatic dispersion (CD) limited 20Gbit/s optical fast orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (F-OFDM) system with up to 840km transmission. It is shown that symmetric extension based guard interval (GI) is required to enable CD compensation using one-tap equalizers. As few as one optical F-OFDM symbol with four and six pilot tones per symbol can achieve near-optimal channel estimation and compensation performance for 600km and 840km respectively.

When a Dammann grating is used to split a beam of femtosecond laser pulses into multiple equal-intensity beams, chromatic dispersion will occur in beams of each order of diffraction and with different scale of angular dispersion because the incident ultrashort pulse contains a broad range of spectral bandwidths. We propose a novel method in which the angular dispersion can be compensated by positioning an m-time-density grating to collimate the mth-order beam that has been split, producing an array of beams that are free of angular dispersion. The increased width of the compensated output pulses and the spectral walk-off effect are discussed. We have verified this approach theoretically and validated it through experiments. It should be highly interesting in practical applications of splitting femtosecond laser pulses for pulse-width measurement, pump-probe measurement, and micromachining at multiple points. Comprehensive computer modelling has been used to investigate the dependence of dispersion penalty on transmission length in an optical communications system employing a directly modulated 2.5Gbit/s DFB laser source and an optimised fibre grating dispersion compensator. Two grating apodization schemes, tanh and Gaussian, have been compared. The 2dB dispersion penalty transmission distance is shown to be approximately 520km along standard monomode fibre after compensation with a 5cm tanh grating. This represents a great improvement over the 150km range expected for a similar uncompensated system.

This thesis investigates the physical behaviour of solitons in wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) systems with dispersion management in a wide range of dispersion regimes. Background material is presented to show how solitons propagate in optical fibres, and key problems associated with real systems are outlined. Problems due to collision induced frequency shifts are calculated using numerical simulation, and these results compared with analytical techniques where possible. Different two-step dispersion regimes, as well as the special cases of uniform and exponentially profiled systems, are identified and investigated. In shallow profile, the constituent second-order dispersions in the system are always close to the average soliton value. It is shown that collision-induced frequency shifts in WDM soliton transmission systems are reduced with increasing dispersion management. New resonances in the collision dynamics are illustrated, due to the relative motion induced by the dispersion map. Consideration of third-order dispersion is shown to modify the effects of collision-induced timing jitter and third-order compensation investigated. In all cases pseudo-phase-matched four-wave mixing was found to be insignificant compared to collision induced frequency shift in causing deterioration of data. It is also demonstrated that all these effects are additive with that of Gordon-Haus jitter.

Summary form only given. A novel method for tuning the second and the third order dispersion using a simple multi-point bending device has been demonstrated. A simple model has been developed that allows to calculate the exact bending profile required for compensation for the given values of dispersion and dispersion slope.

We propose the design of a novel ?-shaped fiber laser resonator and apply it to build a long-cavity normaldispersion mode-locked Er-fiber laser which features enhanced functionalities for management and optimization of pulsed lasing regimes. We report the generation of sub-nanosecond pulses with the energy of ~0.5 µJ at a kilohertz-scale repetition rate in an all-fiber system based on the new laser design. A combination of special design solutions in the laser, such as polarization instability compensation in the ultra-long arm of the resonator, intra-cavity spectral selection of radiation with a broadband fiber Bragg grating, and polarization selection by means of a tilted refractive index grating, ensures low amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise and high stability of the laser system output parameters.

We propose a novel recursive-algorithm based maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) detector in spectrally-efficient coherent wavelength division multiplexing (CoWDM) systems, and investigate its performance in a 1-bit/s/Hz on-off keyed (OOK) system limited by optical-signal-to-noise ratio. The proposed method decodes each sub-channel using the signal levels not only of the particular sub-channel but also of its adjacent sub-channels, and therefore can effectively compensate deterministic inter-sub-channel crosstalk as well as inter-symbol interference arising from narrow-band filtering and chromatic dispersion (CD). Numerical simulation of a five-channel OOK-based CoWDM system with 10Gbit/s per channel using either direct or coherent detection shows that the MAP decoder can eliminate the need for phase control of each optical carrier (which is necessarily required in a conventional CoWDM system), and greatly relaxes the spectral design of the demultiplexing filter at the receiver. It also significantly improves back-to-back sensitivity and CD tolerance of the system.

We report that, contrary to common perception, intra-channel nonlinearity compensation offers significant improvements of up to 4dB, in nonlinear tolerance (Q-factor), in a flexible traffic scenario, and further improvements with increasing local link dispersion, for an optical transport network employing flexible 28Gbaud PM-mQAM transponders.

We study soliton solutions of the path-averaged propagation equation governing the transmission of dispersion-managed (DM) optical pulses in the (practical) limit when residual dispersion and nonlinearity only slightly affect the pulse dynamics over one compensation period. In the case of small dispersion map strengths, the averaged pulse dynamics is governed by a perturbed form of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation; applying a perturbation theory – elsewhere developed – based on inverse scattering theory, we derive an analytic expression for the envelope of the DM soliton. This expression correctly predicts the power enhancement arising from the dispersion management. Theoretical results are verified by direct numerical simulations.
