The internal combustion engine is a heat engine widely used in the automotive industry. In order to better understand its behavior many models in the literature have been proposed in the last years. The 0-D thermodynamic model is a fairly simple tool but it is very useful to understand the phenomenon of combustion inside the chamber of internal combustion engines. In the first phase of this work, an extensive literature review was made in order to get information about this kind of analysis and, after this, apply them in a model able to calculate the instantaneous temperature and pressure in one zone of the combustion chamber of a diesel engine. Therefore some considerations were made with the aim of increasing the accuracy of the model in predicting the correct behavior of the engine, adding the combined effects of heat transfer, leakage and injection. In the second phase, the goal was to study the internal flow of a three-dimensional model of an internal combustion engine. In order to achieve this goal the software Solidworks was used to create the geometries of an engine and the suite of softwares Ansys was used to create the moving mesh (ICEM CFD and CFX-Pre) and to solve the CFD problem (Ansys CFX code). The model was able to perform the air flow simulation during the four-stroke cycle of an engine: admission, compression, expansion and exhaust. The results obtained from both models were suitable and they open a new range of possibilities for future researches on the field

[ES] En este trabajo se describe el desgaste adhesivo (scuffing) que representa la más severa de las agresiones a la que se ven expuestos aros de pistón y camisas de cilindro de motores diésel lentos de dos tiempos aplicados a la generación eléctrica, al quemar combustibles de bajo contenido en azufre. Al afectar simultáneamente, a estos dos elementos básicos de la cámara de combustión, repercute negativamente tanto en la continuidad del servicio del motor, como en los costes asociados a la restitución de las condiciones nominales de trabajo.

La utilización de biocombustibles derivados de aceites vegetales es una opción válida para contribuir a la reducción de emisiones de CO2 y extender la vida de los combustibles convencionales. El biodiésel (mezcla de ésteres metílicos de ácidos grasos) mezclado con gasóleo en motores diesel es una opción ya conocida, pero el análisis del comportamiento del motor en un vehículo ligero en tráfico real es aun un tema poco investigado. El objeto de esta ponencia es presentar la metodología de ensayo y los resultados obtenidos en un trabajo de investigación sobre el efecto que la variación del porcentaje de biodiesel en gasóleo tiene en las prestaciones del motor y su rendimiento térmico en tráfico urbano real. Las medidas se han realizado con equipos embarcados en un vehículo y utilizando el biodiesel producido en la Universidad de la Frontera en Temuco (Chile) mezclado en proporciones diferentes con gasóleo suministrado por Repsolypf, S.A., caracterizado en laboratorio. Los ensayos se han realizado en la ciudad de Madrid con un SEAT León TDI 2.0 con un solo conductor y aplicado dos estilos de conducción diferentes: agresiva y eficiente, caracterizadas según trabajos anteriores. Los resultados obtenidos en consumo de combustible no son los que cabía esperar en base al poder calorífico y la densidad de la mezcla, y no siguen los obtenidos en otras investigaciones realizadas en banco de pruebas. Para explicar esta discrepancia se aportan los resultados de un estudio de la energía aportada por el motor en cada instante seguido de una análisis estadístico de todo el volumen de datos obtenidos para presentar los resultados en una nueva forma que muestra cómo la potencia demandada en el vehículo es menor y el rendimiento térmico del motor diesel mejora al aumentar el porcentaje de biodiesel.

Se presentan los resultados experimentales de un estudio realizado en el Laboratorio de Motores Térmicos de la ETSII de la UPM para evaluar el impacto en eficiencia energética y medioambiental de la tecnología Stop/Start en vehículos todoterreno con motor diesel, en condiciones de tráfico real urbano. Se realizaron ensayos urbanos con vehículos Land Rover Freelander2 en la zona central de la ciudad de Madrid midiendo la emisión instantánea de CO2 y de CO con equipos de medida de emisiones embarcados, y el consumo de combustible se calculó a partir del “balance de carbonos” midiendo el caudal de gases de escape mediante un caudalímetro de desarrollo propio. Se utilizaron dos vehículos todoterreno con motor diesel semejante, ambos cumpliendo los mismos límites Euro 4 para vehículos ligeros, uno convencional y otro adaptado con sistema Stop/Start. Se obtuvieron curvas de tendencia de consumo de combustible y de emisión de CO2 con la velocidad media, que demuestran el significativo efecto de mejora en la eficiencia energética de la versión de motor adaptado con sistema Stop/Start.

streets in local residential areas in large cities, real traffic tests for pollutant emissions and fuel consumption have been carried out in Madrid city centre. Emission concentration and car activity were simultaneously measured by a Portable Emissions Measurement System. Real life tests carried out at different times and on different days were performed with a turbo-diesel engine light vehicle equipped with an oxidizer catalyst and using different driving styles with a previously trained driver. The results show that by reducing the speed limit from 50 km h-1 to 30 km h-1, using a normal driving style, the time taken for a given trip does not increase, but fuel consumption and NOx, CO and PM emissions are clearly reduced. Therefore, the main conclusion of this work is that reducing the speed limit in some narrow streets in residential and commercial areas or in a city not only increases pedestrian safety, but also contributes to reducing the environmental impact of motor vehicles and reducing fuel consumption. In addition, there is also a reduction in the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the combustion of the fuel.

El presente trabajo se propone determinar la distribución de tamaño y número de partículas nanométricas provenientes de motores diésel con equipos embarcados en tráfico extraurbano. Para ello, se utilizaron equipos de medición de última generación en condiciones promedio de conducción en tráfico extraurbano por más de 800 km a lo largo del trayecto Madrid-Badajoz-Madrid mediante un vehículo característico del parque automotor español y se implementaron métodos novedosos y pioneros en el registro de este tipo de emisiones. Todo ello abre el camino para líneas de investigación y desarrollo que contribuirán a entender, dimensionar y cualificar el comportamiento de las partículas, así como su impacto en la calidad de vida de la población. El estudio hace dos grandes aportes al campo. Primero, permite registrar las emisiones en condiciones transitorias propias del tráfico real. Segundo, permite mantener controladas las condiciones de medición y evita la formación aleatoria de partículas provenientes de material volátil, gracias al sistema de adecuación de la muestra de gases de escape incorporado. Como resultado, se obtuvo una muestra abundante y confiable que permitió construir modelos matemáticos para calcular la emisión de partículas nanométricas, ultrafinas, finas y totales sobre las bases volumétrica, espacial y temporal en función de la pendiente del perfil orográfico de la carretera, siempre y cuando esté dentro del intervalo ±5.0%. Estos modelos de cálculo de emisiones reducen tanto los costos de experimentación como la complejidad de los equipos necesarios, y fundamentaron el desarrollo de la primera versión de una aplicación informática que calcula las partículas emitidas por un motor diésel en condiciones de tráfico extraurbano ("Partículas Emitidas por Motores Diésel, PEMDI). ABSTRACT The purpose of this research is to determine the distribution of size and number of nanometric particles that come from diesel engines by means of on-board equipment in extra-urban traffic. In order to do this, cutting-edge measuring equipment was used under average driving conditions in extra-urban traffic for more than 800 km along the Madrid-Badajoz-Madrid route using a typical vehicle from Spain's automotive population and innovative, groundbreaking registering methods for this type of emissions were used. All this paves the way for lines of research and development which should help understand, measure and characterize the behavior of such particles, as well as their impact in the quality of life of the general population. The study makes two important contributions to the field. First, it makes it possible to register emissions under transient conditions, which are characteristic to real traffic. Secondly, it provides a means to keep the measuring conditions under control and prevents the random formation of particles of volatile origin through the built-in adjustment system of the exhaust gas sample. As a result, an abundant and reliable sample was gathered, which enabled the building of mathematical models to estimate the emission of nanometric, ultrafine, fine and total particles on volumetric, spatial and temporal bases as a function of the orographic outline of the road within a ±5.0% range. These emission estimating models lower both the experimentation costs and the required equipment's complexity, and they provided the basis for the development of a first software application version that estimates the particles emitted from diesel engines under extra-urban traffic conditions (Partículas Emitidas por Motores Diésel, PEMDI).

Exhaust emissions from diesel engines are a substantial source of air pollution in this country. In recognition of this fact, the Environmental Protection Agency has issued strict new regulations due to take effect -in 1991 and 1994 that will drastically reduce the amount of some pollutants these engines will be allowed to emit. The technology is not currently available to produce diesel engines that can meet these regulations without large penalties in engine performance and efficiency. One technique that offers promise of being able to reduce emissions from both existing engines and new engines is alcohol fumigation.

Na engenharia mecânica há cada vez mais necessidade de utilizar e de prever o comportamento das máquinas térmicas, mais propriamente dos motores de combustão interna, em especial na área da manutenção e da prevenção de falha num dos componentes vitais de um motor a 4 tempos: o veio de manivelas. Esta situação já tem sido bastante observada na indústria mecânica naval, nomeadamente na Marinha Portuguesa e, devido ao seu elevado grau de importância no desempenho de qualquer motor, decidiu-se focar o trabalho desta tese no estudo dos motores a diesel S.E.M.T Pielstick das unidades navais da Marinha Portuguesa, mais especificamente das corvetas da classe “João Coutinho” e da classe “ Baptista de Andrade”, devido ao historial de ocorrência de falhas no veio de manivelas nesta classe de navios e em outras da Marinha Portuguesa. Para efetuar este estudo, utilizaram-se todos os dados relativos ao historial de ocorrências de falhas destes motores, bem como todos os dados disponíveis do fabricante destes motores, por forma a reproduzir da forma mais fiável possível um modelo tridimensional do veio de manivelas no programa de modelação informática CAD Solidworks®, e possibilitar a análise cinemática do veio de manivelas. Desta forma, foi possível simular as condições de funcionamento do motor, assim como analisar e determinar a causa de falha do veio de manivelas, visando prolongar a vida útil dos veios de manivelas, contribuindo não só para menores custos de manutenção mas também para o aumento da operacionalidade destes navios.
Estudo térmico dos resíduos gerados da destilação atmosférica das misturas diesel/biodiesel de dendê

The growing world demand for energy supplied by fossil fuels, a major contributor to the emission of pollutants into the atmosphere and causing environmental problems, has been encouraging governments and international organizations to reflect and encourage the use of alternative renewable sources. Among these new possibilities deserves attention biodiesel, fuel cleaner and easy to reproduce. The study of new technologies involving that source is necessary. From this context, the paper aims at analyzing the thermal stability by thermogravimetric analysis, of the waste generated from atmospheric distillation of mixtures with ratios of 5, 10, 15 and 20% palm biodiesel in diesel with and without addition of BHT antioxidant. It was synthesized biodiesel through palm oil, via homogeneous catalysis in the presence of KOH, with and without the use of BHT and subsequently added to the diesel common indoor type (S1800) from a gas station BR. The diesel was already added with 5% biodiesel, and thus the proportions used for these blends were subtracted from the existing ratio in diesel fuel, resulting in the following proportions palm oil biodiesel: 0% (B5), 5% (B10), 10 % (B15) and 15% (B20). From atmospheric distillation analysis, performed in mixtures with and without BHT were collected residue generated by each sample and performed a thermal study from the thermogravimetric analysis at a heating rate of 10 °C.min-1, nitrogen atmosphere and heating to 600 ° C. According to the specifications of Resolution No. 7/2008 for biodiesel, it was found that the material was synthesized in accordance with the specifications. For mixtures, it was noted that the samples were in accordance with the ANP Resolution No. 42/2009. Given the TG / DTG curves of the samples of waste mixtures with and without BHT antioxidant was able to observe that they showed a single stage of thermal decomposition attributed to decomposition of heavy hydrocarbons and esters and other heavier constituents of the waste sample weighed. The thermal behavior of residues from atmospheric distillation of mixtures of diesel / biodiesel is very important to understand how this affects the proper functioning of the engine. A large amount of waste can generate a high content of particulate material, coke formation and carbonaceous deposits in engine valves, compromising their performance
