We report a heteroleptic ruthenium complex (007) featuring the electron-rich 5-octyl-2,2'-bis(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) moiety conjugated with 2,2-bipyridine and exhibiting 10.7% power conversion efficiency measured at the AM1.5G conditions, thanks to the enhanced light-harvesting that is closely related to photocurrent. This C107 sensitizer has an extremely high molar extinction coefficient,of 27.4 x 10(3) M-1 cm(-1) at 559 nm in comparison to its analogue C103 (20.5 x 10(3) M-1 cm(-1) at 550 nm) or Z907 (12.2 x 10(3) M(-1)cm(-1) at 521 nm) with the corresponding 5-hexyl-3,4-ethylenedioxythiopliene- or nonyl-substituted bipyridyl unit. The augmentation of molar extinction coefficients and the bathochromic shift of low-energy absorption peaks along with the pi-conjugation extension are detailed by TD-DFT calculations. The absorptivity of mesoporous titania films grafted with Z907, C103, or C107 sublinearly increases with the molar extinction coefficient of sensitizers, which is consistent with the finding derived from the surface coverage measurements that the packing density of those sensitizers decreases with the geometric enlargement of ancillary ligands.

Highly ordered, vertically oriented TiO2 nanotube arrays were prepared by potentiostatic anodization of titanium on FTO-coated glass substrate and for the first time successfully applied in the fabrication of solid-state dye sensitized solar cells (SSDSCs), giving a power conversion efficiency of 1.67% measured under an irradiation of air mass 1.5 global (AM 1.5 G) full sunlight. Furthermore, 3.8% efficiency was reached with a 2.8 mu m thin TiO2 nanotube array film based on a metal free organic dye using ionic liquid electrolyte.

The ZnO/TiO2 core/shell structure was formed through deposition of a TiO2 coating layer on the hydrothermally fabricated ZnO nanorod arrays through radio frequency magnetron sputtering. The effects of the TiO2 shell's characteristics on the current-voltage behaviors of the core/shell-based dye-sensitized solar cells (CS-DSSC) were investigated. As the rates of injection, transfer, and recombination of electrons of such CS-DSSC were affected significantly by the crystallization, morphology, and continuity of the TiO2 shells, the photovoltaic efficiency was accordingly varied remarkably. In addition, the efficiency was further improved by enhancing the surface area in the core/shell electrode.

SrIn2O4:Dy3+/Pr3+/Tb3+ white/red/green phosphors were prepared by the Pechini sol-gel process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), diffuse reflectance, photoluminescence, cathodoluminescence spectra, and lifetimes were utilized to characterize the samples. XRD reveal that the samples begin to crystallize at 800 degrees C and pure SrIn2O4 phase can be obtained at 900 degrees C. FE-SEM images indicate that the SrIn2O4:Dy3+, SrIn2O4:Pr3+, and SrIn2O4:Tb3+ samples consist of fine and spherical grains with size around 200-400 nm. Under the excitation of ultraviolet light and low-voltage electron beams (1 - 5 kV), the SrIn2O4:Dy3+, SrIn2O4: Pr3+, and SrIn2O4: Tb3+ phosphors show the characteristic emissions of Dy3+ (F-4(9/2) - H-6(15/2) at 492 nm and 4F(9/2) - 6H(13/2) at 581 nm, near white), Pr3+ (P-3(0) - H-3(4) at 493 nm, D-1(2) - H-3(4) at 606 nm, and P-3(0) - H-3(6) at 617 nm, red) and Tb3+ (D-5(4) - F-7(6,5,4,3) transitions dominated by D-5(4) - F-7(5) at 544 nm, green), respectively. All of the luminescence resulted from an efficient energy transfer from the SrIn2O4 host lattice to the doped Dy3+, Pr3+, and Tb3+ ions, and the luminescence mechanisms have been proposed.

Caln(2)O(4):Dy3+/Pr3+/Tb3+ blue-white/green/green phosphors were prepared by the Pechini sol-gel process. Under the excitation of ultraviolet light and low electron beams (1-5kV), the CaIn2O4:Dy3+, CaIn2O4:Pr3+ and CaIn2O4:Tb3+ phosphors show the characteristic emissions of Dy3+ ((F9/2-H15/2)-F-4-H-6 and (F9/2-H13/2)-F-4-H-6 transitions, blue-white), Pr3+ ((P0-H4)-P-3-H-3, (D2-H4)-D-1-H-3 and (P1-H5)-P-3-H-3 transitions, green) and Tb3+ ((D4-F6,5,4,3)-D-5-F-7 transitions, green), respectively. All the luminescence is resulted from an efficient energy transfer from the CaIn2O4 host lattice to the doped Dy3+ ,Pr3+ and Tb3+ ions, and the corresponding luminescence mechanisms have been proposed.

Three kinds of TiO2 nanostructured thin films and their CdS-sensitized films, consisting of different sizes of TiO2 nanoparticles prepared with different methods, have been investigated. The surface photovoltage spectra (SPS) measurements indicate that the density of surface states on TiO2 is likely dependent upon the details of prepared methods. TiO2 particles prepared from basic sol have more surface states than that prepared from acidic sol. When the TiO2 thin films prepared using the TiO2 sols were sensitized by CdS particles, the SPS responses relative to the surface states on TiO2 from 350 to 800 nm were decreased. The photoelectrochemical properties of nanostructured TiO2 electrodes suggest that the fewer the surface states and the smaller the particle sizes of TiO2, the larger the photocurrent response. For CdS sensitized TiO2 thin film electrode, it is shown that the semiconductor sensitization is an efficient way to decrease the influence of surface states on the charge separation, and can improve the intensity of photocurrent response. We report in this paper the spectral characteristics of Er3+ (2 at.%)-activated and Ce3+ (0.3 at.%)-sensitized yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG:Er,Ce) laser crystals grown by the Czochralski technique. The absorption and emission spectra were measured at room temperature. By using absorption spectra and Judd-Ofelt theory the experimental oscillator strengths of the Er3+ transitions in the YAG:Er,Ce crystals were calculated. The energy transfer between the Er3+ and Ce3+ ions is also discussed.

The behavior of a model ionic liquid (IL) confined between two flat parallel walls was studied at various interwall distances using computer simulations. The results focus both on structural and dynamical properties. Mass and charge density along the confinement axis reveal a structure of layers parallel to the walls that leads to an oscillatory profile in the electrostatic potential. Orientational correlation functions indicate that cations at the interface orient tilted with respect to the surface and that any other orientational order is lost thereafter. The diffusion coefficients of the ions exhibit a maximum as a function of the confinement distance, a behavior that results from a combination of the structure of the liquid as a whole and a faster molecular motion in the vicinity of the walls. We discuss the relevance of the present results and elaborate on topics that need further attention regarding the effects of ILs in the functioning of IL-based dye-sensitized solar cells.

The unique absorption properties of the 9-hydroxyphenalen-1-one (HPHN) ligand have been exploited to obtain visible-light-sensitizable rare-earth complexes in 1: 3 and 1: 4 metal-to-ligand ratios. In both stoichiometries (1:3,tris,Ln(PHN)3;1:4, tetrakis, A[ Ln( PHN)(4)], with Ln being a trivalent rare-earth ion and A being a monovalent cation), the complexes of Nd(III),Er( III), and Yb(III) show typical near-infrared luminescence upon excitation with visible light with wavelengths up to 475 nm. The X-ray crystal structures of the tris complexes show solvent coordination to the central rare-earth ion, whereas in the tetrakis complexes, the four PHN-ligands form a protective shield around the central ion, preventing small solvent molecules from coordinating to the rare-earth ion, at least in the solid state.

Cough reflex hypersensitization is a key feature in patients with troublesome cough. The clinical consequence of this hypersensitive state is typified by bouts of coughing often triggered by low threshold stimuli encountered by the patient during normal daily activities including exposure to aerosols, scents and odours, a change in air temperature and when talking or laughing. These features are often perceived by cough patients to be the most disruptive aspect of their condition and undoubtedly contribute to impaired quality of life. Patients with troublesome cough may describe a range of additional symptoms and sensations including an 'urge to cough' or the feeling of an 'itch' at the back of the throat, or a choking sensation and occasionally chest pain or breathlessness. It is uncertain if these features arise due to the processes responsible for cough reflex sensitization or as a direct consequence of the underlying cough aetiology. In an attempt to understand the clinical features of a sensitized cough reflex, the spectrum of symptoms typically described by cough patients will be reviewed and possible underlying mechanisms considered. Since an intact cough reflex is crucial to airway protection, anti-tussive treatment that attenuates the hypersensitive cough state rather than abolishing the cough reflex completely would be preferable. The photo-oxidation of water is studied in presence of UV-light (lambda
