Solitary waves and cnoidal waves have been found in an adiabatic compressible atmosphere which, under ambient conditions, has winds, and is isothermal. The theory is illustrated with an example for which the background wind is linearly increasing. It is found that the number of possible critical speeds of the flow depends crucially on whether the Richardson number is greater or less than one‐fourth.

The steady laminar compressible boundary layer flow of an electrically conducting fluid in the stagnation region of a sphere with an applied magnetic field has been studied. The effects of the induced magnetic field, mass transfer, and viscous dissipation have been taken into account. Both isothermal and adiabatic wall conditions have been considered. The governing equations have been solved numerically using a shooting method. The skin friction and heat transfer are found to be strongly affected by the magnetic field, mass transfer, wall temperature and Mach number. It is found that the magnetic field reduces the heat transfer. This is a significant result which can be used in controlling the heat transfer rate. The boundary layer solutions break down as the magnetic parameter tends to a certain critical value.

To resolve many flow features accurately, like accurate capture of suction peak in subsonic flows and crisp shocks in flows with discontinuities, to minimise the loss in stagnation pressure in isentropic flows or even flow separation in viscous flows require an accurate and low dissipative numerical scheme. The first order kinetic flux vector splitting (KFVS) method has been found to be very robust but suffers from the problem of having much more numerical diffusion than required, resulting in inaccurate computation of the above flow features. However, numerical dissipation can be reduced by refining the grid or by using higher order kinetic schemes. In flows with strong shock waves, the higher order schemes require limiters, which reduce the local order of accuracy to first order, resulting in degradation of flow features in many cases. Further, these schemes require more points in the stencil and hence consume more computational time and memory. In this paper, we present a low dissipative modified KFVS (m-KFVS) method which leads to improved splitting of inviscid fluxes. The m-KFVS method captures the above flow features more accurately compared to first order KFVS and the results are comparable to second order accurate KFVS method, by still using the first order stencil. The effect of large mass injection on the following three-dimensional laminar compressible boundary-layer flows is investigated by employing the method of matched asymptotic expansions: (i) swirling flow in a laminar compressible boundary layer over an axisymmetric surface with variable cross-section and (ii) laminar compressible boundary-layer flow over a yawed infinite wing in a hypersonic flow. The resulting equations are solved numerically by combining the finite-difference technique with quasi-linearization. An increase in the swirl parameter, the yaw angle or the wall temperature is found to be capable of bringing the viscous layer nearer the surface and reducing the effects of massive blowing.

Analyses of the invariants of the velocity gradient ten- sor were performed on flow fields obtained by DNS of compressible plane mixing layers at convective Mach num- bers Mc=0:15 and 1.1. Joint pdfs of the 2nd and 3rd invariants were examined at turbulent/nonturbulent (T/NT) boundaries—defined as surfaces where the local vorticity first exceeds a threshold fraction of the maximum of the mean vorticity. By increasing the threshold from very small lev-els, the boundary points were moved closer into the turbulent region, and the effects on the pdfs of the invariants were ob-served. Generally, T/NT boundaries are in sheet-like regions at both Mach numbers. At the higher Mach number a distinct lobe appears in the joint pdf isolines which has not been ob-served/reported before. A connection to the delayed entrain-ment and reduced growth rate of the higher Mach number flow is proposed.

Optical imaging techniques have played a major role in understanding the flow dynamics of varieties of fluid flows, particularly in the study of hypersonic flows. Schlieren and shadowgraph techniques have been the flow diagnostic tools for the investigation of compressible flows since more than a century. However these techniques provide only the qualitative information about the flow field. Other optical techniques such as holographic interferometry and laser induced fluorescence (LIF) have been used extensively for extracting quantitative information about the high speed flows. In this paper we present the application of digital holographic interferometry (DHI) technique integrated with short duration hypersonic shock tunnel facility having 1 ms test time, for quantitative flow visualization. Dynamics of the flow fields in hypersonic/supersonic speeds around different test models is visualized with DHI using a high-speed digital camera (0.2 million fps). These visualization results are compared with schlieren visualization and CFD simulation results. Fringe analysis is carried out to estimate the density of the flow field.

Model free simulations are performed to study the effect of the presence of side wall in compressible mixing of two parallel dissimilar gaseous streams with significant temperature difference. The turbulence statistics shows the three dimensional nature of the flow with and without the presence of side walls. The presence of side wall neither makes the flow field two dimensional, nor suppresses three dimensional disturbances. However, the comparison of shear layer growth rate and wall pressures reveal a better match with the two dimensional simulation results. This better match is explained on the basis of formation of oblique structures due to the presence of side walls which also suppress the distribution of momentum in third direction making the pressures to be higher as compared with the case without side walls. We present a study of the hydrodynamics of compressible superfluids in confined geometries. We use a perturbative procedure in terms of the dimensionless expansion parameter (v/v(s))(2) where v is the typical speed of the flow and vs is the speed of sound. A zero value of this parameter corresponds to the incompressible limit. We apply the procedure to two specific problems: the case of a trapped superfluid with a Gaussian profile of the local density, and that of a superfluid confined in a rotating obstructed cylinder. We find that the corrections due to finite compressibility which are, as expected, negligible for liquid He, are important but amenable to the perturbative treatment for typical ultracold atomic systems.

Single fluid schemes that rely on an interface function for phase identification in multicomponent compressible flows are widely used to study hydrodynamic flow phenomena in several diverse applications. Simulations based on standard numerical implementation of these schemes suffer from an artificial increase in the width of the interface function owing to the numerical dissipation introduced by an upwind discretization of the governing equations. In addition, monotonicity requirements which ensure that the sharp interface function remains bounded at all times necessitate use of low-order accurate discretization strategies. This results in a significant reduction in accuracy along with a loss of intricate flow features. In this paper we develop a nonlinear transformation based interface capturing method which achieves superior accuracy without compromising the simplicity, computational efficiency and robustness of the original flow solver. A nonlinear map from the signed distance function to the sigmoid type interface function is used to effectively couple a standard single fluid shock and interface capturing scheme with a high-order accurate constrained level set reinitialization method in a way that allows for oscillation-free transport of the sharp material interface. Imposition of a maximum principle, which ensures that the multidimensional preconditioned interface capturing method does not produce new maxima or minima even in the extreme events of interface merger or breakup, allows for an explicit determination of the interface thickness in terms of the grid spacing. A narrow band method is formulated in order to localize computations pertinent to the preconditioned interface capturing method. Numerical tests in one dimension reveal a significant improvement in accuracy and convergence; in stark contrast to the conventional scheme, the proposed method retains its accuracy and convergence characteristics in a shifted reference frame. Results from the test cases in two dimensions show that the nonlinear transformation based interface capturing method outperforms both the conventional method and an interface capturing method without nonlinear transformation in resolving intricate flow features such as sheet jetting in the shock-induced cavity collapse. The ability of the proposed method in accounting for the gravitational and surface tension forces besides compressibility is demonstrated through a model fully three-dimensional problem concerning droplet splash and formation of a crownlike feature. In this paper, an implicit scheme is presented for a meshless compressible Euler solver based on the Least Square Kinetic Upwind Method (LSKUM). The Jameson and Yoon's split flux Jacobians formulation is very popular in finite volume methodology, which leads to a scalar diagonal dominant matrix for an efficient implicit procedure (Jameson & Yoon, 1987). However, this approach leads to a block diagonal matrix when applied to the LSKUM meshless method. The above split flux Jacobian formulation, along with a matrix-free approach, has been adopted to obtain a diagonally dominant, robust and cheap implicit time integration scheme. The efficacy of the scheme is demonstrated by computing 2D flow past a NACA 0012 airfoil under subsonic, transonic and supersonic flow conditions. The results obtained are compared with available experiments and other reliable computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results. The present implicit formulation shows good convergence acceleration over the RK4 explicit procedure. Further, the accuracy and robustness of the scheme in 3D is demonstrated by computing the flow past an ONERA M6 wing and a clipped delta wing with aileron deflection. The computed results show good agreement with wind tunnel experiments and other CFD computations.

The three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations are approximated by a fifth order upwind compact and a sixth order symmetrical compact difference relations combined with three-stage Ronge-Kutta method. The computed results are presented for convective Mach number Mc = 0.8 and Re = 200 with initial data which have equal and opposite oblique waves. From the computed results we can see the variation of coherent structures with time integration and full process of instability, formation of Lambda-vortices, double horseshoe vortices and mushroom structures. The large structures break into small and smaller vortex structures. Finally, the movement of small structure becomes dominant, and flow field turns into turbulence. It is noted that production of small vortex structures is combined with turning of symmetrical structures to unsymmetrical ones. It is shown in the present computation that the flow field turns into turbulence directly from initial instability and there is not vortex pairing in process of transition. It means that for large convective Mach number the transition mechanism for compressible mixing layer differs from that in incompressible mixing layer.

To overcome the difficulty in the DNS of compressible turbulence at high turbulent Mach number, a new difference scheme called GVC8 is developed. We have succeeded in the direct numerical simulation of decaying compressible turbulence up to turbulent Mach number 0.95. The statistical quantities thus obtained at lower turbulent Mach number agree well with those from previous authors with the same initial conditions, but they are limited to simulate at lower turbulent Mach numbers due to the so-called start-up problem. The energy spectrum and coherent structure of compressible turbulent flow are analysed. The scaling law of compressible turbulence is studied. The computed results indicate that the extended self-similarity holds in decaying compressible turbulence despite the occurrence of shocklets, and compressibility has little effects on relative scaling exponents when turbulent Mach number is not very high.

A high order difference scheme is used to simulate the spatially developing compressible axisymmetric jet. The results show that the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability appears first when the jet loses its stability, and then with development of jet the increase in nonlinear effects leads to the secondary instability and the formation of the streamwise vortices. The evolution of the three-dimensional coherent structure is presented. The computed results verify that in axisymmetric jet the secondary instability and formation of the streamwise vortices are the important physical mechanism of enhancing the flow mixing and transition occurring.

Direct numerical simulations of a spatially evolving supersonic flat-plate turbulent boundary layer flow with free Mach number M = 2.25 and Reynolds number Re = 365000/in are performed. The transition process from laminar to turbulent flow is obtained by solving the three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes, equations, using high-order accurate difference schemes. The obtained statistical results agree well with the experimental and theoretical data. From the numerical results it can be seen that the transition process under the considered conditions is the process which skips the Tolimien-Schlichting instability and the second instability through the instability of high gradient shear layer and becomes of laminar flow breakdown. This means that the transition process is a bypass-type transition process. The spanwise asymmetry of the disturbance locally upstream imposed is important to induce the bypass-type transition. Furthermore, with increasing the time disturbance frequency the transition will delay. When the time disturbance frequency is large enough, the transition will disappear.

This article describes a computational study of viscous effects on lobed mixer flowfields. The computations, which were carried out using a compressible, three-dimensional, unstructured-mesh Navier-Stokes solver, were aimed at assessing the impacts on mixer performance of inlet boundary-layer thickness and boundary-layer separation within the lobe. The geometries analyzed represent a class of lobed mixer configurations used in turbofan engines. Parameters investigated included lobe penetration angles from 22 to 45 deg, stream-to-stream velocity ratios from 0.5 to 1.0, and two inlet boundary-layer displacement thicknesses. The results show quantitatively the increasing influence of viscous effects as lobe penetration angle is increased. It is shown that the simple estimate of shed circulation given by Skebe et al. (Experimental Investigation of Three-Dimensional Forced Mixer Lobe Flow Field, AIAA Paper 88-3785, July, 1988) can be extended even to situations in which the flow is separated, provided an effective mixer exit angle and height are defined. An examination of different loss sources is also carried out to illustrate the relative contributions of mixing loss and of boundary-layer viscous effects in cases of practical interest.
