We have performed density functional theory calculations with the generalized gradient approximation to investigate CO oxidation on a close-packed transition metal surface, Pd(lll), and a more open surface, Pd(100), aiming to shed light on surface structure effects on reaction pathways and reactivity, an important issue in catalysis. Reaction pathways on both surfaces at two different coverages have been studied. It is found that the reaction pathways on both surfaces possess crucial common features despite the fact that they have different surface symmetries. Having determined reaction barriers in these systems, we find that the reaction on Pd(lll) is strongly coverage dependent. Surface coverages, however, have little effect on the reaction on Pd(100). Calculations also reveal that the low coverage reactions are structure sensitive while the medium coverage reactions are not. Detailed discussions on these results are given.

The dynamics of adsorption and oxidation of CO on Ru(0001) electrode in sulfuric acid solution have been studied using in situ FTIR spectroscopy under potential control and at open circuit, the latter at 20 and 55 degrees C. The in situ IR data show clearly that the bisulfate anion adsorbs on the Ru(0001) surface over the potential range from -200 mV to 350 mV (vs. Ag/AgCl) at 20 degrees C in the absence and presence of adsorbed CO; however, increasing the temperature to 55 degrees C and/ or increasing the concentration of dissolved O-2 reduces the bisulfate adsorption. The formation of surface (hydro-) oxide at higher potentials replaces the bisulfate adsorbates. Both linear (COL) and three-fold hollow bonded CO (COH) adsorbates were produced following CO adsorption at Ru(0001) in H2SO4, as was observed in our previous studies in HClO4. However, the amount of adsorbed CO observed in H2SO4 was ca. 10% less than that in HClO4; in addition, the COL and COH frequencies were higher in H2SO4, and the onset potential for COads oxidation 25 mV lower. These new results are interpreted in terms of a model in which the adsorbed bisulfate weakens the CO adlayer, allowing the active Ru oxide layer to form at lower potentials. Significantly different results were observed at open circuit in H2SO4 compared both to the data under potential control and to our earlier data in HClO4, and these observations were rationalized in terms of the adsorbed HSO4- anions (pre-adsorbed at -200 mV) inhibiting the oxidation of the surface at open circuit (after stepping from the initial potential of -200 mV), as the latter was no longer driven by the imposed electrochemical potential but via chemical oxidation by trace dissolved O-2. Results from experiments at open circuit at 55 degrees C and using oxygen-saturated H2SO4 supported this model. The difference in Ru surface chemistry between imposed electrochemical control and chemical control has potential implications with respect to fuel cell electrocatalysis.

An array-based approach is put forward to obtain insight into reactivity under mechanochemical solvent-free conditions. We describe a survey of sixty potential reactions between twelve metal salts MX2 {(M = Cu, X-2 = (OAc)(2), (HCO2)(2), (F3CCO2)(2), (acac)(2), (F(6)acac)(2), (NO3)(2), SO4; M = Ni, X-2 = (OAc)(2), (NO3)(2), SO4; M = Zn, X-2 (OAc)(2), (NO3)(2)} and five bridging organic ligands {isonicotinic acid (HINA), 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (H2BDC), acetylenedicarboxylic acid (H(2)ADC), 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3BTC), 4,4'-bipyridyl (BIPY). Reaction conditions involved a ball mill, applied for 15 min at 30 Hz, without external heating. When examined by XRPD, forty of the combinations gave detectable reactions, thirty-eight with crystalline products. Of these, twenty-nine reactions were quantitative (consuming all of at least one reactant). Comparison of XRPD patterns with patterns simulated from single crystal X-ray diffraction data in the Cambridge Structural Database allowed structural identification of six products. Of particular interest are the microporous framework materials [Cu(INA)(2)] and [Cu-3(BTC)(2)] (HKUST-1) obtained by reaction of the corresponding carboxylic acids with copper acetate. Other non-porous polymers with 3-dimensional connectivity, [Ni(ADC)(H2O)(4)], or 1-dimensional connectivity, [Cu(acac)(2)(BIPY)] and [Cu(F6acac)(BIPY)] were also obtained. Reaction between zinc acetate and H2ADC gave a new product which had not previously been characterised by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, but whose XRPD pattern suggests that it is isostructural with the known nickel polymer [Ni(ADC)(H2O)(4)]. Two further isostructural nickel and zinc products were obtained in reactions between HINA and nickel nitrate and zinc nitrate. Trends observed within the array are discussed. Copper acetate and copper formate were the most effective starting materials for reaction with carboxylic acids, potentially related to the basicity of their anions and the solvating effects of the formic and acetic acid byproducts. Amongst the ligands there was a general negative corelation between melting point and reactivity. The issue of pore templating in microporous phases and the generation of new structures is also discussed in relation to the Cu(INA)(2), Cu-3(BTC)(2) and nickel nitrate-BIPY systems. Overall, the study suggests that mechanochemical reactivity between metal salts and organic ligands under solvent free conditions is remarkably general. Use of array-based approaches as demonstrated here is advocated a useful way to reveal underlying trends in reactivity under solvent free mechanochemical conditions and to highlight particular cases for more detailed study.

1,2-Cyclic sulfite xylosides offer facile access to 1,2-oxazolines upon reaction with aromatic and alkyl nitrites under Lewis or Bronsted acid conditions. Additionally, hydrophobic ionic liquids facilitate acid-catalysed formations of such oxazolines and C- and O-linked xylosides, providing means to carry out fast reactions at room temperature, and this in yields comparable to reactions conducted in xylene at high temperature for extended reaction time. 2-Phosphanylethylcyclopentadienyl lithium compounds, Li[C5R'(4)(CH2)(2)PR2] (R = Et, R' = H or Me, R = Ph, R' = Me), have been prepared from the reaction of spirohydrocarbons C5R'(4)(C2H4) with LiPR2. C5Et4HSiMe2CH2PMe2, was prepared from reaction of Li[C5Et4] with Me2SiCl2 followed by Me2PCH2Li. The lithium salts were reacted with [RhCl(CO)2]2,[IrCl(CO)3] or [Co-2(CO)(8)] to give [M(C5R'(4)(CH2) 2PR2)(CO)] (M = Rh, R = Et, R' = H or Me, R= Ph, R' = Me; M = Ir or Co, R = Et, R' = Me), which have been fully characterised, in many cases crystallographically as monomers with coordination of the phosphorus atom and the cyclopentadienyl ring. The values of nu(CO) for these complexes are usually lower than those for the analogous complexes without the bridge between the cyclopentadienyl ring and the phosphine, the exception being [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PEt2)(CO)] (Cp' = C5Me4), the most electron rich of the complexes. [Rh(C5Et4SiMe2CH2PMe2)(CO)] may be a dimer. [Co-2(CO)(8)] reacts with C5H5(CH2)(2)PEt2 or C5Et4HSiMe2CH2PMe2 (L) to give binuclear complexes of the form [Co-2(CO)(6)L-2] with almost linear PCoCoP skeletons. [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PEt2)(CO)] and [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PPh2)(CO)] are active for methanol carbonylation at 150 degrees C and 27 bar CO, with the rate using [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PPh2)(CO)] (0.81 mol dm(-3) h(-1)) being higher than that for [RhI2(CO)(2)](-) (0.64 mol dm(-3) h(-1)). The most electron rich complex, [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PEt2)(CO)] (0.38 mol dm(-3) h(-1)) gave a comparable rate to [Cp*Rh(PEt3)(CO)] (0.30 mol dm(-3) h(-1)), which was unstable towards oxidation of the phosphine. [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PEt2)I-2], which is inactive for methanol carbonylation, was isolated after the methanol carbonylation reaction using [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PEt2)(CO)].

Radical anions of 1-bromo-4-nitrobenzene (p-BrC6H4NO2) are shown to be reactive in the room temperature ionic liquid N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, ([C(4)mPyrr][NTf2]), by means of voltammetric measurements. In particular, they are shown to react via a DISP type mechanism such that the electrolysis of p-BrC6H4NO2 occurs consuming between one and two electrons per reactant molecule, leading to the formation of the nitrobenzene radical anion and bromide ions. This behaviour is a stark contrast to that in conventional non-aqueous solvents such as acetonitrile, dimethyl sulfoxide or N,N-dimethylformamide, which suggests that the ionic solvent promotes the reactivity of the radical anion, probably via stabilisation of the charged products.

The structure, thermal stability, and catalytic behavior of a novel highly dispersed silica-supported Pd/Sn catalyst prepared by an organometallic route have been examined by X-ray photoelectron, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray absorption, fine structure spectroscopies, the latter two measurements being carried outwith an in situ reaction cell. Additional reactor measurements were performed on a more Sn-rich catalyst and on a pure Pd catalyst. Varying the temperature of reduction induced large variations in catalytic performance toward ethyne-coupling reactions. These changes are understandable in terms of the destruction of SnO2-like structures surrounding the Pd core, yielding a skin of metallic Sn which subsequently undergoes intermixing with Pd. The overall thermal and catalytic behavior of these highly dispersed materials accords well with the analogous single-crystal model system.

The reactivity of the Ru(0 0 0 1) electrode towards the adsorption and electrooxidation of CO and methanol has been studied by variable-temperature in situ FTIR spectroscopy in both perchloric acid and sodium hydroxide solution, and the results interpreted in terms of the surface chemistry of the Ru(0 0 0 1) electrode. Both linear (CO) and threefold hollow (CO) binding CO adsorbates (bands at 1970-2040 and 1770-1820 cm, respectively) were observed on the Ru(0 0 0 1) electrode in both 0.1 M HClO and 0.1 M NaOH solutions from the CO adsorption. In the acid solution, CO was detected as the main adsorbed species on Ru(0 0 0 1) surface over all the potential region studied. In contrast, in the alkaline solution, more CO than CO was detected at lower potentials, whilst increasing the potential resulted in the transformation of CO to CO. At higher potentials, the oxidation of the adsorbed CO took place via reaction with the active (1 × 1)-O oxide/hydroxide. It was found that no dissociative adsorption or electrooxidation of methanol took place at the Ru(0 0 0 1) at potentials below 900 mV vs Ag/AgCl in perchloric acid solution at both 20 and 55°C. However, in the alkaline solution, methanol did undergo dissociative adsorption, to form linearly adsorbed CO (CO) with little or no CO adsorbed at threefold hollow sites (CO) at both 20 and 55°C. Increasing the temperature from 20 to 55°C clearly facilitated the methanol dissociative adsorption to CO and also enhanced the electrooxidation of the CO. At the higher potentials, significant oxidation of methanol to CO and methyl formate in acid solution and to bicarbonate and formate in alkaline solution, was observed, which was attributed to the formation of an active RuO phase on the Ru(0 0 0 1) surface, in agreement with our previous studies. © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. The reactivity of sp2 carbon materials is studied using the adsorption and dissociation of O2 on graphene and graphene oxide as model systems. The reactions on the basal plane, zigzag and armchair edges of graphene and graphene oxide with different oxygen-containing groups are calculated using first principles calculations. Two Brønsted-Evans- Polanyi relationships are identified and an electron delocalization model is suggested to understand the general trend of reactivity for sp2 carbon materials.

Hydrogenation reactions at transition metal surfaces comprise a key set of reactions in heterogeneous catalysis. In this paper, density functional theory methods are employed to take an in-depth look at this fundamental reaction type. The energetics of hydrogenation of atomic C, N, and O have been studied in some detail over low index Zr, Nb, Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, and Pd surfaces. Detailed bonding analysis has also been employed to track carefully the chemical changes taking place during reaction. A number of interesting horizontal and vertical trends have been uncovered relating to reactant valency and metal d-band filling. A general correlation has also been found between the reaction barriers and the reaction potential energies. Moreover, when each reaction is considered independently, correlation has been found to improve with decreasing reactant valency. Bonding analysis has pointed to this being related to the relative position of the transition state along the reaction coordinate and has shown that as reactant valency decreases, the transition states become progressively later.

Reaction of the tris(3-phenylpyrazolyl)methane sulfonate species (Tpms(Ph))Li with the copper(I) complex [Cu(MeCN)(4)][PF6] affords [Cu(Tpms(Ph))(MeCN)] 1. The latter, upon reaction with equimolar amounts of cyclohexyl-(CyNC) or 2,6-dimethylphenyl (XylNC) isocyanides, or excess CO, furnishes the corresponding Cu(I)complexes [Cu(Tpms(Ph))(CNR)] (R = Cy 2, Xyl 3) or [Cu(Tpms(Ph))(CO)] 4. The ligated isocyanide in 2 or 3 (or the acetonitrile ligand in 1)is displaced by 3-iminoisoindolin-1-one to afford 5, the first copper(I) complex containing an 3-iminoisoindolin-1-one ligand. The ligated acetonitrile in 1 undergoes nucleophilic attack by methylamine to give the amidine complex [Cu(Tpms(Ph)){MeC(NH)NHMe}] 6, whereas only the starting materials were recovered from the attempted corresponding reactions of 2 and 3 with methylamine. Complexes 1 or 6 form the trinuclear hydroxo-copper(II)species [(mu-Cu){Cu(mu-OH) (2)(Tpms(Ph))}(2)] 7 upon air oxidation in moist methanol. In all the complexes the scorpionate ligand facially caps the metal in the N,N,O-coordination mode.

Phenolic compounds are important components of grapes and wines. They have been found to have important roles in grape and wine systems and properties that are beneficial for human health. Vanillin (3-methoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde) is a phenolic compound coming from the oxidative degradation of lignin in oak-barrels during the aging of wine. Vanillin is an important flavour component of wine and its concentration in wine influences significantly the aroma and flavour of wine. The concentration of vanillin in wine is affected by various factors including the presence of metal ions. In this work, by using HPLC, HPLC-MS, and MS technologies, iron (III) cations were found to affect the oxidation of vanillin in a model system of wine, and the product of the oxidation was identified as divanillin. The mechanism of the redox reaction between vanillin and Fe^"^ is thought to follow that of other phenol oxidations. Increasing the concentration of Fe ^ in the model system accelerates divanillin production. The best pH condition for the divanillin production in the system is the range of 3.0 ~ 3.5. Increasing temperature from 20°C to 40°C accelerates the divanillin production. Divanillin was found to exist in three commercial red wines in this work. Keeping the storage temperature cool and decreasing the contact of grapes and wines with iron are two major measures suggested by this work in order to decrease the oxidation of vanillin during the making and aging of wine.

This thesis describes the synthesis, structural studies, and stoichiometric and catalytic reactivity of novel Mo(IV) imido silylamide (R'N)Mo(R2)(173_RIN-SiR32-H)(PMe3)n (1: Rl = tBu, Ar', Ar; R2 = Cl; R32 = Me2, MePh, MeCl, Ph2, HPh; n = 2; 2: R' = Ar, R2 = SiH2Ph, n = 1) and hydride complexes (ArN)Mo(H)(R)(PMe3)3 (R = Cl (3), SiH2Ph (4». Compounds of type 1 were generated from (R'N)Mo(PMe3)n(L) (5: R' = tBu, Ar', Ar; L = PMe3, r/- C2H4) and chlorohydrosilanes by the imido/silane coupling approach, recently discovered in our group. The mechanism of the reaction of 5 with HSiCh to give (ArN)MoClz(PMe3)3 (8) was studied by VT NMR, which revealed the intermediacy of (ArN)MCh(172 -ArN=SiHCl)(PMe3)z (9). The imido/silyl coupling methodology was transferred to the reactions of 5 with chlorine-free hydrosilanes. This approach allowed for the isolation of a novel ,B-agostic compound (ArN)Mo(SiHzPh)(173 -NAr-SiHPhH)(PMe3) (10). The latter was found to be active in a variety of hydrosilation processes, including the rare monoaddition of PhSiH3 to benzonitrile. Stoichiometric reactions of 11 with unsaturated compounds appear to proceed via the silanimine intermediate (ArN)M(17z-ArN=SiHPh)(PMe3) (12) and, in the case of olefins and nitriles, give products of Si-C coupling, such as (ArN)Mo(R)(173 -NAr-SiHPh-CH=CHR')(PMe3) (13: R = Et, R' = H; 14: R = H, R' = Ph) and (ArN)Mo(172-NAr-SiHPh-CHR=N)(PMe3) (15). Compound 13 was also subjected to catalysis showing much improved activity in the hydrosilation of carbonyls and alkenes. Hydride complexes 3 and 4 were prepared starting from (ArN)MoCh(PMe3)3 (8). Both hydride species catalyze a diversity of hydrosilation processes that proceed via initial substrate activation but not silane addition. The proposed mechanism is supported by stoichiometric reactions of 3 and 4, kinetic NMR studies, and DFf calculations for the hydrosilation of benzaldehyde and acetone mediated by 4.

(A) Solid phase synthesis of oligonucleotides are well documented and are extensively studied as the demands continue to rise with the development of antisense, anti-gene, RNA interference, and aptamers. Although synthesis of RNA sequences faces many challenges, most notably the choice of the 2' -hydroxy protecting group, modified 2' -O-Cpep protected ribonucleotides were synthesized as alternitive building blocks. Altering phosphitylation procedures to incorporate 3' -N,N-diethyl phosphoramidites enhanced the overall reactivity, thus, increased the coupling efficiency without loss of integrety. Furthermore, technical optimizations of solid phase synthesis cycles were carried out to allow for successful synthesis of a homo UIO sequences with a stepwise coupling efficiency reaching 99% and a final yield of 91 %. (B) Over the past few decades, dipyrrometheneboron difluoride (BODIPY) has gained recognition as one of the most versatile fluorophores. Currently, BODIPY labeling of oligonucleotides are carried out post-synthetically and to date, there lacks a method that allows for direct incorporation of BODIPY into oligonucleotides during solid phase synthesis. Therefore, synthesis of BODIPY derived phosphoramidites will provide an alternative method in obtaining fluorescently labelled oligonucleotides. A method for the synthesis and incorporation of the BODIPY analogues into oligonucleotides by phosphoramidite chemistry-based solid phase DNA synthesis is reported here. Using this approach, BODIPY-labeled TlO homopolymer and ISIS 5132 were successfully synthesized.
