In this work we report the preparation of a new blue-emitting material based on the templated synthesis of mesoporous silica (MCM-41) using micellar solutions of the newly synthesized monocationic metallosurfactant complex bis[1-benzyl-4-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole](4,4'-diheptadecyl-2,2'- bipyridine)-iridium(III) chloride in hexadecyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide (CTAB). Under ambient conditions, significant increases in excited state lifetime and quantum yield values (up to 45%), were obtained for the solid materials in comparison to the corresponding micellar solutions. Solid state (1)H and (19)F NMR spectroscopies were successfully employed for quantifying the luminophore content in terms of Ir-surfactant to CTAB and Ir-surfactant to silica ratios.

Layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly was used to combine crystalline rod-like nanoparticles obtained from a vegetable source, cellulose nanowhiskers (CNWs), with collagen, the main component of skin and connective tissue found exclusively in animals. The film growth of the multilayered collagen/CNW was monitored by UV-Vis spectroscopy and ellipsometry measurements, whereas the film morphology and surface roughness were characterized by SEM and AFM. UV-Vis spectra showed the deposition of the same amount of collagen, 5 mg m(-2), in each dipping cycle. Ellipsometry data showed an increment in thickness with the number of layers, and the average thickness of each bilayer was found to be 8.6 nm. The multilayered bio-based nanocomposites were formed by single layers of densely packed CNWs adsorbed on top of each thin collagen layer where the hydrogen bonding between collagen amide groups and OH groups of the CNWs plays a mandatory role in the build-up of the thin films. The approach used in this work represents a potential strategy to mimic the characteristics of natural extracellular matrix (ECM) which can be used for applications in the biomedical field.

Physical and electrochemical properties of nanostructured Ni-doped manganese oxides (MnO(x)) catalysts supported on different carbon powder substrates were investigated so as to characterize any carbon substrate effect toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics in alkaline medium. These NiMnO(x)/C materials were characterized using physicochemical analyses. Small insertion of Ni atoms in the MnO(x) lattice was observed, which consists of a true doping of the manganese oxide phase. The corresponding NiMnO(x) phase is present in the form of needles or agglomerates, with crystallite sizes in the order of 1.5-6.7 nm (from x-ray diffraction analyses). Layered manganite (MnOOH) phase has been detected for the Monarch 1000-supported NiMnO(x) material, while different species of MnO(x) phases are present at the E350G and MM225 carbons. Electrochemical studies in thin porous coating active layers in the rotating ring-disk electrode setup revealed that the MnO(x) catalysts present better ORR kinetics and electrochemical stability upon Ni doping. The ORR follows the so-called peroxide mechanism on MnO(x)/C catalysts, with the occurrence of minority HO(2)(-) disproportionation reaction. The HO(2)(-) disproportionation reaction progressively increases with the Ni content in NiMnO(x) materials. The catalysts supported on the MM225 and E350G carbons promote faster disproportionation reaction, thus leading to an overall four-electron ORR pathway. (C) 2011 The Electrochemical Society. The longitudinal and transverse magnetostriction and microstructure of polycrystalline Fe(100-x)Ge(x) (x= 8, 12, 15, 20) alloys were investigated in order to correlate the magnetostriction with microstructure. In order to obtain different microstructures in the Fe(100-x)Ge(x) alloys, the samples were annealed at 600 degrees C during 2 h and at 1150 degrees C for half hour and then quenched in cold water. For Ge concentrations lower than 14 at.%, the longitudinal magnetostriction is positive and increases positively up to 22 ppm at 12 at.% Ge then decreases and vanishes at about 14 at.% Ge. For further Ge concentration increase the longitudinal magnetostriction is negative and reaches -30 ppm for Fe(80)Ge(20). This behavior, that is very similar to that reported for Fe-Si alloys, is explained by the structural changes caused by different thermal histories of the alloys. (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier B. V.

Natural fibers used in this study were both pre-treated and modified residues from sugarcane bagasse. Polymer of high density polyethylene (HDPE) was employed as matrix in to composites, which were prodUced by mixing high density polyethylene with cellulose (10%) and Cell/ZrO(2)center dot nH(2)O (10%), using an extruder and hydraulic press. Tensile tests showed that the Cell/ZrO(2)center dot nH(2)O (10%)/HDPE composites present better tensile strength than cellulose (10%)/HDPE composites. Cellulose agglomerations were responsible for poor adhesion between fiber and matrix in cellulose (10%)/HDPE composites. HDPF/natural fibers composites showed also lower tensile strength in comparison to the polymer. The increase in Young`s modulus is associated to fibers reinforcement. SEM analysis showed that the cellulose fibers insertion in the matrix Caused all increase of defects, which were reduced When modified cellulose fibers were Used. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) ceramics were sintered by liquid phase sintering at low temperatures using bioglass as sintering additive. ZrO2-bioglass ceramics were prepared by mixing a ZrO2 stabilized with 3 Mol%Y2O3 and different amounts of bioglass based on 3CaO center dot P2O5-MgO-SiO2 system. Mixtures were compacted by uniaxial cold pressing and sintered in air, at 1200 and 1300 degrees C for 120 min. The influence of the bioglass content on the densification, tetragonal phase stability, bending strength, hardness and fracture toughness was investigated. The ceramics sintered at 1300 degrees C and prepared by addition of 3% of bioglass, exhibited the highest strength of 435 MPa, hardness of 1170 HV and fracture toughness of 6.3 MPa m(1/2). These results are related to the low monoclinic phase content, high relative density and the presence of the thermal residual stress generated between the ZrO2-matrix and bioglass grain boundary, contributing to the activation of the toughening mechanisms. Ti-rich Ti-Si-B alloys can be considered for structural applications at high temperatures (max. 700 degrees C), however, phase equilibria data is reported only for T = 1250 degrees C. Thus, in this work the phase stability of this system has been evaluated at 700 degrees C. In order to attain equilibrium conditions in shorter time, rapid solidified samples have been prepared and carefully characterized. The microstructural characterization of the produced materials were based on X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM-BSE), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), High Temperature X-ray diffraction with Synchrotron radiation (XRDSR) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Amorphous and amorphous with embedded nanocrystals have been observed after rapid solidification from specific alloy compositions. The values of the crystallization temperature (Tx) of the alloys were in the 509-647 degrees C temperature range. After Differential Scanning Calorimetry and High Temperature X-ray Diffraction with Synchrotron radiation, the alloys showed crystalline and basically formed by two or three of the following phases: alpha Ti, Ti(6)Si(2)B; Ti(5)Si(3); Ti(3)Si and TiB. It has been shown the stability of the Ti(3)Si and Ti(6)Si(2)B phases at 700 degrees C and the proposition of an isothermal section at this temperature. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

CoB, CO(2)B, CoSi, Co(2)Si and CO(5)Si(2)B phases can be formed during heat-treatment of amorphous co-Si-B soft magnetic materials. Thus, it is important to determine their magnetic behavior as a function of applied field and temperature. In this study, polycrystalline single-phase samples of the above phases were produced via arc melting and heat-treatment under argon. The single-phase nature of the samples was confirmed via X-ray diffraction experiments. AC and DC magnetization measurements showed that Co(2)Si and CO(5)Si(2)B phases are paramagnetic. Minor amounts of either Co(2)Si or CoSi(2) in the CoSi-phase sample suggested a paramagnetic behavior of the CoSi-phase, however, it should be diamagnetic as shown in the literature. The diamagnetic behavior of the CoB phase was also confirmed. The paramagnetic behavior of CO(5)Si(2)B is for the first time reported. The magnetization results of the phase CO(2)B have a ferromagnetic signature already verified on previous NMR studies. A detailed set of magnetization measurements of this phase showed a change of the easy magnetization axis starting at 70K, with a temperature interval of about 13K at a very small field of 1 mT. As the strength of the field is increased the temperature interval is enlarged. The strength of field at which the magnetization saturates increases almost linearly as the temperature is increased above 70K. The room temperature total magnetostriction of the CO(2)B phase was determined to be 8 ppm at a field of 1T. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The development of Nb(3)Al and Nb(3)Sn superconductors is of great interest for the applied superconductivity area. These intermetallics composites are obtained normally by heat treatment reactions at high temperature. Processes that allow formation of the superconducting phases at lower temperatures (<1000 degrees C), particularly for Nb(3)Al, are of great interest. The present work studies phase formation and stability of Nb(3)Al and Nb(3)Sn superconducting phases using mechanical alloying (high energy ball milling). Our main objective was to form composites near stoichiometry, which could be transformed into the superconducting phases using low-temperature heat treatments. High purity Nb-Sn and Nb-Al powders were mixed to generate the required superconducting phases (Nb-25at.%Sn and Nb-25at.%Al) in an argon atmosphere glove-box. After milling in a Fritsch mill, the samples were compressed in a hydraulic uniaxial press and encapsulated in evacuated quartz tubes for heat treatment. The compressed and heat treated samples were characterized using X-ray diffractometry. Microstructure and chemical analysis were accomplished using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry. Nb(3)Al XRD peaks were observed after the sintering at 800 degrees C for the sample milled for 30 h. Nb(3)Sn XRD peaks could be observed even before the heat treatment. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Although titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy have been widely used as dental materials, possible undesirable effects such as cytotoxic reactions and neurological disorder due to metal release led to the development of more corrosion resistant and V and Al free titanium alloys, containing Nb, Zr, Mo and Ta atoxic elements. Fluoride containing products used in the prevention of plaque formation and dental caries can affect the stability of the passive oxide films formed on the Ti alloys. In this work, the corrosion behaviour of the new Ti-23Ta alloy has been evaluated in artificial saliva of different pH and fluoride concentration using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy study showed that the oxide film formed on the alloy in artificial saliva consists of an inner compact film and an outer porous layer. The corrosion resistance of Ti-23Ta alloy which is reduced by increasing F concentration or decreasing pH is related to the resistance of the inner compact layer. The presence of fluoride and low pH of the saliva enhance the porosity of the oxide film and its dissolution.

The thermal expansion anisotropy of the V(5)Si(3) and T(2)-phase of the V-Si-B system were determined by high-temperature X-ray diffraction from 298 to 1273 K. Alloys with nominal compositions V(62.5)Si(37.5) (V5Si3 phase) and V(63)Si(12)B(25) (T(2)-phase) were prepared from high-purity materials through arc-melting followed by heat-treatment at 1873 K by 24 h, under argon atmosphere. The V(5)Si(3) phase exhibits thermal expansion anisotropy equals to 1.3, with thermal expansion coefficients along the a and c-axis equal to 9.3 x 10(-6) K(-1) and 11.7 x 10(-6) K(-1), respectively. Similarly, the thermal expansion anisotropy value of the T(2)-phase is 0.9 with thermal expansion coefficients equal to 8.8 x 10(-6) K(-1) and 8.3 x 10(-6) K(-1) along the, a and c-axis respectively. Compared to other isostructural silicides of the 5:3 type and the Ti(5)Si(3) phase, the V(5)Si(3) phase presents lower thermal expansion anisotropy. The T(2)-phase present in the V-Si-B system exhibits low thermal expansion anisotropy, as the T(2)-phase of the Mo-Si-B, Nb-Si-B and W-Si-B systems. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ti-6Al-4V alloy has been widely used in restorative surgery due to its high corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Nevertheless, some studies showed that V and Al release in the organism might induce cytotoxic effects and neurological disorders, which led to the development of V-free alloys and both V- and Al-free alloys containing Nb, Zr, Ta, or Mo. Among these alloys, Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy is promising due to its better biomechanical compatibility than Ti-6Al-4V. In this work, the corrosion behavior of Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, and Ti-xNb-13Zr alloys (x=5, 13, and 20) was evaluated in Ringer`s solution (pH 7.5) at 37 degrees C through open-circuit potential measurements, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Spontaneous passivity was observed for all materials in this medium. Low corrosion current densities (in the order of 10(-7) A/cm(2)) and high impedance values (in the order of 10(5) Omega cm(2) at low frequencies) indicated their high corrosion resistance. EIS results showed that the passivating films were constituted of an outer porous layer (very low resistance) and an inner compact layer (high resistance), the latter providing the corrosion resistance of the materials. There was evidence that the Ti-xNb-13Zr alloys were more corrosion resistant than both Ti and Ti-6Al-4V in Ringer`s solution.

Results of the surface modification of Ti-16Si-4B powder alloy by nitrogen ion implantation are presented, together with the experimental description of the preparation of that powder by high-energy ball milling and hot pressing. The phase structure, chemical composition and morphology of sample surfaces were observed by utilizing X-ray diffractometer (XRD), atomic force microscope (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A tribological characterization was carried out with a ball-on-disc tribometer and an SEM. Friction coefficient is compared with the one obtained for Ti-6Al-4V alloy and the wear scars characterized by SEM/EDS (energy dispersive spectroscopy). The concentration profile of the detected elements have been investigated using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) depth profiling. Our results show that a shallow implanted layer of oxygen and nitrogen ions were obtained at the Ti-16Si -4B alloy surface, sufficient to modify slightly its tribological properties.
