The adoption of the incorporated form of ownership in preference to partnership is linked to the shift to a more modem organizational archetype in professional firms. Yet existing empirical research offers insufficient insight into the organizational processes of this transformation in different professional arenas. Where ownership and control become separated, there is a clearer theoretical explanation of the implications for the way the firm is run. Where ownership and control remain inside, the firm, however, the consequences are not so clear and have not been well explored. Using survey and interview materials derived from a study of architecture practices, we examine the processes by which differences based on ownership emerge. Then, by drawing on Weberian theories, where they are concerned with professionalization as a project with material and social rewards, we specify more clearly the context for change in professional firms' archetypes. This, we conclude, provides a stronger basis for understanding the change trajectories of firms within professions and comparative organizational analysis between professions.

Form factors are derived for a model describing the coherent Josephson tunneling between two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. This is achieved by studying the exact solution of the model within the framework of the algebraic Bethe ansatz. In this approach the form factors are expressed through determinant representations which are functions of the roots of the Bethe ansatz equations.

The majority of the world's population now resides in urban environments and information on the internal composition and dynamics of these environments is essential to enable preservation of certain standards of living. Remotely sensed data, especially the global coverage of moderate spatial resolution satellites such as Landsat, Indian Resource Satellite and Systeme Pour I'Observation de la Terre (SPOT), offer a highly useful data source for mapping the composition of these cities and examining their changes over time. The utility and range of applications for remotely sensed data in urban environments could be improved with a more appropriate conceptual model relating urban environments to the sampling resolutions of imaging sensors and processing routines. Hence, the aim of this work was to take the Vegetation-Impervious surface-Soil (VIS) model of urban composition and match it with the most appropriate image processing methodology to deliver information on VIS composition for urban environments. Several approaches were evaluated for mapping the urban composition of Brisbane city (south-cast Queensland, Australia) using Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper data and 1:5000 aerial photographs. The methods evaluated were: image classification; interpretation of aerial photographs; and constrained linear mixture analysis. Over 900 reference sample points on four transects were extracted from the aerial photographs and used as a basis to check output of the classification and mixture analysis. Distinctive zonations of VIS related to urban composition were found in the per-pixel classification and aggregated air-photo interpretation; however, significant spectral confusion also resulted between classes. In contrast, the VIS fraction images produced from the mixture analysis enabled distinctive densities of commercial, industrial and residential zones within the city to be clearly defined, based on their relative amount of vegetation cover. The soil fraction image served as an index for areas being (re)developed. The logical match of a low (L)-resolution, spectral mixture analysis approach with the moderate spatial resolution image data, ensured the processing model matched the spectrally heterogeneous nature of the urban environments at the scale of Landsat Thematic Mapper data.

Following treatment with bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) extract and bracken spores a number of DNA adducts were detected by P-32-postlabeling. Three of these adducts have been described previously (Povey et al., Br. J. Cancer (1996) 74, 1342-1348) and in this study, using a slightly different protocol, four new adducts, with higher chromatographic mobility, were detected at levels ranging from 50 to 230% of those previously described, When DNA was treated in vitro with activated ptaquiloside (APT) and analysed by butanol extraction or nuclease P1 treatment, only one adduct was detected by P-32-postlabeling, This adduct was not present in the DNA from mice treated with bracken fern or spores, suggesting either that bracken contains genotoxins other than ptaquiloside or that the metabolism of ptaquiloside produces genotoxins not reflected by activated ptaquiloside. However, as the ATP-derived adduct has been detected previously in ileal DNA of bracken-fed calves, species-specific differences in the metabolism of bracken genotoxins may exist, thereby leading to differences in their biological outcomes. Admission controls, such as trunk reservation, are often used in loss networks to optimise their performance. Since the numerical evaluation of performance measures is complex, much attention has been given to finding approximation methods. The Erlang Fixed-Point (EFP) approximation, which is based on an independent blocking assumption, has been used for networks both with and without controls. Several more elaborate approximation methods which account for dependencies in blocking behaviour have been developed for the uncontrolled setting. This paper is an exploratory investigation of extensions and synthesis of these methods to systems with controls, in particular, trunk reservation. In order to isolate the dependency factor, we restrict our attention to a highly linear network. We will compare the performance of the resulting approximations against the benchmark of the EFP approximation extended to the trunk reservation setting. By doing this, we seek to gain insight into the critical factors in constructing an effective approximation. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Most finite element packages use the Newmark algorithm for time integration of structural dynamics. Various algorithms have been proposed to better optimize the high frequency dissipation of this algorithm. Hulbert and Chung proposed both implicit and explicit forms of the generalized alpha method. The algorithms optimize high frequency dissipation effectively, and despite recent work on algorithms that possess momentum conserving/energy dissipative properties in a non-linear context, the generalized alpha method remains an efficient way to solve many problems, especially with adaptive timestep control. However, the implicit and explicit algorithms use incompatible parameter sets and cannot be used together in a spatial partition, whereas this can be done for the Newmark algorithm, as Hughes and Liu demonstrated, and for the HHT-alpha algorithm developed from it. The present paper shows that the explicit generalized alpha method can be rewritten so that it becomes compatible with the implicit form. All four algorithmic parameters can be matched between the explicit and implicit forms. An element interface between implicit and explicit partitions can then be used, analogous to that devised by Hughes and Liu to extend the Newmark method. The stability of the explicit/implicit algorithm is examined in a linear context and found to exceed that of the explicit partition. The element partition is significantly less dissipative of intermediate frequencies than one using the HHT-alpha method. The explicit algorithm can also be rewritten so that the discrete equation of motion evaluates forces from displacements and velocities found at the predicted mid-point of a cycle. Os Potenciais Auditivos Evocados (PEA) constituem uma fonte rica e complexa de informações sobre as vias do sistema nervoso central e de estruturas ativadas por estimulação auditiva. Devido ao escasso número de trabalhos existentes correlacionando Resposta de Latência Média com diferentes estímulos sonoros, surgiu o interesse em se realizar esse estudo. OBJETIVO: Verificar o Potencial Evocado Auditivo de Média Latência (PEAML) em adultos normo-ouvintes frente à estimulação por clique e com música contralateral. FORMA DE ESTUDO: coorte contemporânea com corte transversal. MÉTODO: Foram realizadas as avaliações de PEAML em 10 sujeitos utilizando cliques na intensidade de 70dBnNA bilateralmente e posteriormente com estímulo musical, sendo que as latências e amplitudes foram medidas. Foi realizada a comparação da amplitude da onda Pa em relação ao eletrodo C3 e C4 e em relação à orelha direita e esquerda na presença e ausência de estímulo musical. RESULTADOS: todos os sujeitos apresentaram PEAML dentro dos limites de normalidade em ambas as orelhas e na avaliação com estímulo musical e clique foi observada uma diminuição das amplitudes na orelha contralateral a apresentação do estímulo musical em todas as posições do eletrodo, embora esta diferença não tenha sido estatisticamente significante. CONCLUSÃO: Sugere-se que o estímulo musical influencia na amplitude do PEAML, uma vez que houve diminuição da amplitude da onda Pa frente a esta estimulação.

A motivação para este trabalho vem da necessidade que o autor tem em poder registar as notas tocadas na guitarra durante o processo de improviso. Quando o músico está a improvisar na guitarra, muitas vezes não se recorda das notas tocadas no momento, este trabalho trata o desenvolvimento de uma aplicação para guitarristas, que permita registar as notas tocadas na guitarra eléctrica ou clássica. O sinal é adquirido a partir da guitarra e processado com requisitos de tempo real na captura do sinal. As notas produzidas pela guitarra eléctrica, ligada ao computador, são representadas no formato de tablatura e/ou partitura. Para este efeito a aplicação capta o sinal proveniente da guitarra eléctrica a partir da placa de som do computador e utiliza algoritmos de detecção de frequência e algoritmos de estimação de duração de cada sinal para construir o registo das notas tocadas. A aplicação é desenvolvida numa perspectiva multi-plataforma, podendo ser executada em diferentes sistemas operativos Windows e Linux, usando ferramentas e bibliotecas de domínio público. Os resultados obtidos mostram a possibilidade de afinar a guitarra com valores de erro na ordem de 2 Hz em relação às frequências de afinação standard. A escrita da tablatura apresenta resultados satisfatórios, mas que podem ser melhorados. Para tal será necessário melhorar a implementação de técnicas de processamento do sinal bem como a comunicação entre processos para resolver os problemas encontrados nos testes efectuados.

Escrever um artigo que, sem a pretensão de ser exaustivo, apontasse semelhanças no modo de pensar a Educação e a Aprendizagem Musicais de Kodály e Gordon, tornou-se para mim uma necessidade quase compulsiva, depois de frequentar o Seminário promovido pela APEM e ministrado pelo próprio Prof. Gordon nos dias 3 e 4 de Novembro de 1995.

Não se torna fácil descrever em poucas páginas a vida, personalidade e obra de alguém, nem comentar o modo como os seus ideais forma postos em prática enquanto viveu e mais tarde pelos seus discípulos. A tarefa torna-se particularmente difícil quando se escreve sobre alguém como Kodály.
