The main characteristics of the Vernagtferner mass balance are sumarized in the table below. The mass balance years from 1964/65 to 2003/2004 are listed. The table includes the total area of the glacier (basis for the calculations), the equilibrium line altitude (ELA), percentage of the accumulation area in relation to the total area (AAR) and the specific net mass balance in mm w.e. (water equivalent) per year. It becomes clear that, after a rather minor growth period in the mid 1970's, the glacier continually lost mass since the beginning of the 1980's. Besides that, a clear increase of mass balance years with extreme mass losses could be observed in the last decade. The "glacier-friendly" summer with a well-balanced mass balance in 1999 could only interrupt the series of years with extreme mass losses, but this means no change in the trend. The minor mass loss in 1999 was caused by a winter snow cover above average, which prevented the glacier from becoming snow free over large areas and thus resulted in a lower ice melt. Although real summer conditions in 2000 were mainly restricted to August and produced a snow free area only slightly larger than in 1999, there have been further ice losses. This trend of negative mass balance continued also in the years 2001 and 2002. Nevertheless, the losses are moderate because a smaller part of the glacier became ice free until autumn (appr. 50 %). The summer 2003 caused a loss of ice in a dimension never seen since the beginning of the scientific investigations. This resulted from a combination of different factors: after only a moderate winter snowcover the glacier became snow free very early. For the first time the ablation area spanned over the entire glacier (blue fields in the mass balance tables!). Only one short snowfall event interrupted the ablation period, which lasted twice as long as in the years of large losses in the 1990's. The extreme mass loss in 2003 will also influence the mass balance in the following year 2004. The graphical representation of the elevation distribution of the specific mass balance together with the absolute mass balance can be found individually for each year by choosing one of the mass balance values from the table. These diagrams also include the area-height-distribution of the glacier and the ablation area. A tabular version of the numeric values in dependence of the elevation, provided separately for the accumulation area, the ablation area and the total glacier, can be found in colums "Persistent Identifier". The tables include the results for three different parts of the glacier and for the total glacier.

Most of the Pb isotope data for the Leg 92 metalliferous sediments (carbonate-free fraction) form approximately linear arrays in the conventional isotopic plots, extending from the middle of the field for mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) toward the field for Mn nodules. These arrays are directed closely to the average values of Mn nodules, the composition of which reflects the Pb isotope composition of seawater (Reynolds and Dasch, 1971). Since the Leg 92 samples are almost devoid of continentally derived detritus, it can be inferred that the more radiogenic end-member is seawater. The less radiogenic end-member lies in the very middle of the MORB field, and hence can be considered to reflect the Pb isotope composition of typical ocean-ridge basalt. The array of data lying between these two end-members is most readily interpreted in terms of simple linear mixing of Pb from the two different end-member sources. According to this model, eight samples from Sites 599 to 601 contain 50 to 100% basaltic Pb. Five of these samples have compositions that are identical within the uncertainty of the analyses. We use the average of these five values to define our unradiogenic end-member in the linear mixing model. The ratios used for this average are 206Pb/204Pb = 18.425 ± 0.010; 207Pb/204Pb = 15.495 ± 0.018; 208Pb/204Pb = 37.879 ± 0.068. These values should approximate the average Pb isotope composition of discharging hydrothermal solutions, and therefore also that of the basaltic crust, over the period of time represented by these samples ( 4 m.y., from 4 to 8 Ma). Sr isotope ratios show a significant range of values, from 0.7082 to 0.7091. The lower ratios are well outside the value of 0.70910 ± 6 for modern-day seawater (Burke et al., 1982). However, most values correspond very closely to the curve of 87Sr/86Sr versus age for seawater, with older samples having progressively lower 87Sr/86Sr ratios. The simplest explanation for this progressive reduction is that recrystallization of the abundant biogenic carbonate in the sediments released older seawater Sr which was incorporated into ferromanganiferous phases during diagenesis. Leg 92 metalliferous sediments have total rare earth element (REE) contents that range on a carbonate-free basis from 131 to 301 ppm, with a clustering between 167 and 222 ppm. The patterns have strong negative Ce anomalies. Samples from Sites 599 to 601 display a slight but distinct enrichment in the heavy REE relative to the light REE, whereas those from Sites 597 to 598 show almost no heavy REE enrichment. The former patterns (those for Sites 599 to 601) are interpreted as indicating moderate diagenetic alteration of metalliferous sediments originating at the EPR axis; the latter reflect more complete diagenetic modification.

A new 10 year surface mass balance (SMB) record of Hurd and Johnsons Glaciers, Livingston Island, Antarctica, is presented and compared with earlier estimates on the basis of local and regional meteorological conditions and trends.Since Johnsons is a tidewater glacier, we also include a calving flux calculation to estimate its total mass balance. The average annual SMB over the 10 year observation period 2002–11 is –0.150.10 m w.e. for Hurd Glacier and 0.050.10 m w.e. for Johnsons Glacier. Adding the calving losses to the latter results in a total mass balance of –0.090.10 m w.e. There has been a deceleration of the mass losses of these glaciers from 1957–2000 to 2002–11, which have nearly halved for both glaciers. We attribute this decrease in the mass losses to a combination of increased accumulation in the region and decreased melt. The increased accumulation is attributed to larger precipitation associated with the recent deepening of the circumpolar pressure trough, while the melt decrease is associated with lower summer surface temperatures during the past decade.

The effective mass Schrodinger equation of a QD of parallelepipedic shape with a square potential well is solved by diagonalizing the exact Hamiltonian matrix developed in a basis of separation-of-variables wavefunctions. The expected below bandgap bound states are found not to differ very much from the former approximate calculations. In addition, the presence of bound states within the conduction band is confirmed. Furthermore, filamentary states bounded in two dimensions and extended in one dimension and layered states with only one dimension bounded, all within the conduction band which are similar to those originated in quantum wires and quantum wells coexist with the ordinary continuum spectrum of plane waves. All these subtleties are absent in spherically shaped quantum dots, often used for modeling.

Reconstructing the history of ambient levels of metals by using tree-ring chemistry is controversial. This controversy can be resolved in part through the use of selective microanalysis of individual wood cells. Using a combination of instrumental neutron activation analysis and secondary ion mass spectrometry, we have observed systematic inhomogeneity in the abundance of toxic metals (Cr, As, Cd, and Pb) within annual growth rings of Quercus rubra (red oak) and have characterized individual xylem members responsible for introducing micrometer-scale gradients in toxic metal abundances. These gradients are useful for placing constraints on both the magnitude and the mechanism of heavy metal translocation within growing wood. It should now be possible to test, on a metal-by-metal basis, the suitability of using tree-ring chemistries for deciphering long-term records of many environmental metals.

By means of capillary electrophoresis coupled online to electrospray ionization MS, a library of theoretically 171 disubstituted xanthene derivatives was analyzed. The method allowed the purity and makeup of the library to be determined: 160 of the expected compounds were found to be present, and 12 side-products were also detected in the mixture. Due to the ability of capillary electrophoresis to separate analytes on the basis of charge, most of the xanthene derivatives could be resolved by simple capillary electrophoresis-MS procedures even though 124 of the 171 theoretical compounds were isobaric with at least one other molecule in the mixture. Any remaining unresolved peaks were resolved by MS/MS experiments. The method shows promise for the analysis of small combinatorial libraries with fewer than 1000 components.

A precise and rapid method for identifying sites of interaction between proteins was demonstrated; the basis of the method is direct mass spectrometric readout from the complex to determine the specific components of the proteins that interact--a method termed affinity-directed mass spectrometry. The strategy was used to define the region of interaction of a protein growth factor with a monoclonal antibody. A combination of proteolytic digestion and affinity-directed mass spectrometry was used to rapidly determine the approximate location of a continuous binding epitope within the growth factor. The precise boundaries of the binding epitope were determined by affinity-directed mass spectrometric analysis of sets of synthetic peptide ladders that span the approximate binding region. In addition to the mapping of such linear epitopes, affinity-directed mass spectrometry can be applied to the mapping of other types of molecule-molecule contacts, including ligand-receptor and protein-oligonucleotide interactions.

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the economic basis of mass support for, and opposition to the European Community. In other words the main question is: to what extent, and in what ways, is popular support or opposition to the EC dependent upon economic circumstances and considerations? Behind this research question lies the matter of the legitimacy of the EC in the eyes of citizens across Europe. In some respects the results of this study are frustrating and inconclusive. In other respects, however, the results suggest some clear generalizations and conclusions. First, we have found rather little evidence that the EC or European unification are evaluated in primarily economic terms. Secondly, support seems to be associated more strongly with social and attitudinal variables of a non-economic kind. Thirdly, the figures suggest that diffuse and somewhat idealistic reasons for supporting unification and EC membership tend to outweigh more specific reasons. Fourthly, a solid foundation of inertia, custom, and national tradition seem to maintain support and make it grow.

Accurate estimates of body mass in fossil taxa are fundamental to paleobiological reconstruction. Predictive equations derived from correlation with craniodental and body mass data in extant taxa are the most commonly used, but they can be unreliable for species whose morphology departs widely from that of living relatives. Estimates based on proximal limb-bone circumference data are more accurate but are inapplicable where postcranial remains are unknown. In this study we assess the efficacy of predicting body mass in Australian fossil marsupials by using an alternative correlate, endocranial volume. Body mass estimates for a species with highly unusual craniodental anatomy, the Pleistocene marsupial lion (Thylacoleo carnifex), fall within the range determined on the basis of proximal limb-bone circumference data, whereas estimates based on dental data are highly dubious. For all marsupial taxa considered, allometric relationships have small confidence intervals, and percent prediction errors are comparable to those of the best predictors using craniodental data. Although application is limited in some respects, this method may provide a useful means of estimating body mass for species with atypical craniodental or postcranial morphologies and taxa unrepresented by postcranial remains. A trend toward increased encephalization may constrain the method's predictive power with respect to many, but not all, placental clades.

Recently, there has been much speculation about the impact of international media coverage of Australia's position on Indigenous people, migrants and asylum seekers on other nations' images of Australia. In this experiment we examined whether there was any basis for such concerns by considering the short-term impact of negative TV coverage of Australians on Canadian viewers. A questionnaire provided baseline data on Canadian students' perceptions of Australians and Australian race relations. Four months later, the students were assigned to one of three conditions that varied media contact with Australians. Students viewed one of two television programs (about right-wing political independent, Pauline Hanson, and her emotive criticisms of Aborigines and Asian immigrants or about an ethnically-mixed group of young Australians and their positive sense of cultural identity), or they viewed no program (no contact control). Results indicated that both positive and negative media coverage of Australians affected Canadians' views of Australia in the short-term. In particular, negative coverage (of Hanson) promoted less favourable views of Australians and Australian race relations over time and relative to the positive media and no media control conditions. The media's role in shaping international images is discussed.

Frog jumping is an excellent model system for examining the structural basis of interindividual variation in burst locomotor performance. Some possible factors that affect jump performance, such as total body size, hindlimb length, muscle mass, and muscle mechanical and biochemical properties, were analysed at the interindividual (intraspecies) level in the tree frog Hyla multilineata. The aim of this study was to determine which of these physiological and anatomical variables both vary between individuals and are correlated with interindividual variation in jump performance. The model produced via stepwise linear regression analysis of absolute data suggested that 62% of the interindividual variation in maximum jump distance could be explained by a combination of interindividual variation in absolute plantaris muscle mass, total hindlimb muscle mass ( excluding plantaris muscle), and pyruvate kinase activity. When body length effects were removed, multiple regression indicated that the same independent variables explained 43% of the residual interindividual variation in jump distance. This suggests that individuals with relatively large jumping muscles and high pyruvate kinase activity for their body size achieved comparatively large maximal jump distances for their body size.

High-performance liquid chromatography coupled by an electrospray ion source to a tandem mass spectrometer (HPLC-EST-MS/ MS) is the current analytical method of choice for quantitation of analytes in biological matrices. With HPLC-ESI-MS/MS having the characteristics of high selectivity, sensitivity, and throughput, this technology is being increasingly used in the clinical laboratory. An important issue to be addressed in method development, validation, and routine use of HPLC-ESI-MS/MS is matrix effects. Matrix effects are the alteration of ionization efficiency by the presence of coeluting substances. These effects are unseen in the chromatograrn but have deleterious impact on methods accuracy and sensitivity. The two common ways to assess matrix effects are either by the postextraction addition method or the postcolumn infusion method. To remove or minimize matrix effects, modification to the sample extraction methodology and improved chromatographic separation must be performed. These two parameters are linked together and form the basis of developing a successful and robust quantitative HPLC-EST-MS/MS method. Due to the heterogenous nature of the population being studied, the variability of a method must be assessed in samples taken from a variety of subjects. In this paper, the major aspects of matrix effects are discussed with an approach to address matrix effects during method validation proposed. (c) 2004 The Canadian Society of Clinical Chemists. Many dietary factors have been associated with a decreased risk of developing cancer. One potential mechanism by which these factors, chemopreventors, protect against cancer may be via alteration of carcinogen metabolism. The broccoli constituent sulforaphane (1-isothiocyanate-4-methylsulinylbutane) (CH3-S0-(CH2)4-NCS) has been isolated as a potential inducer of phase II detoxification enzymes and also protects rodents against 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benz[aJanthracene-induced mammary tumours. The ability of sulforaphane to also modulate phase I activation enzymes (cytochrome P450) (CYP450) was studied here. Sulforaphane was synthesised with an overall yield of 15%, essentially via 1-methylsulfinylphthalimidobutane, which was oxidised to the sulfoxide moiety. Deprotective removal of phthalimide yielded the amine, which was converted into sulforaphane by reaction with N,N'-thionocarbonyldiimidazole. Purity (95 %) was checked by 1H-NMR,13C-NMR and infrared and mass spectrometry.Sulforaphane was a competitive inhibitor of CYP2E1 in acetone-induced Sprague-Dawley rat microsomes (Ki 37.9 ± 4.5μM), as measured by the p-nitrophenol hydroxylase assay. Ethoxyresorufin deethylase activity (EROD), a measurement of CYP1A activity, was also inhibited by sulforaphane (100μM) but was not competitive, and a preincubation time-dependence was observed. In view of these results, the capacity of sulforaphane to inhibit N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA)-induced genotoxicity (CYP2E1-mediated) was studied using mouse liver activation systems. Sulforaphane (>0.8μM) inhibited the mutagenicity of NDMA (4.4 mg/plate) in Salmonella typhimurium strain TA100 after pre-incubation for 45 min with acetone-induced liver 9000 g supernatants from Balb/c mice. Unscheduled DNA synthesis induced by NDMA (33μ5 M) in mouse hepatocytes was also reduced by sulforaphane in a concentration-dependent manner (0.064-20μM). Sulforaphane was not genotoxic itself in any of these systems and cytotoxic only at high concentrations (>0.5 mM and > 40μM respectively). The ability of sulforaphane to modulate the orthologous human enzymes was studied using a human epithelial liver cell line (THLE) expressing individual human CYP450 isoenzymes. Using the Comet assay (a measurement of DNA strand breakage under alkaline conditions), NDMA (0.01-1μg/ml) and IQ (0.1-10μg/ml) were used to produce strand breaks in T5-2E1 cells (expressing human CYP2E1) and T5-1A2 cells (expressing human CYP1A2) respectively, however no response was observed in T5-neo cells (without CYP450 cDNA transfection). Sulforaphane inhibited both NDMA and IQ-induced DNA strand breakage in a concentration-dependent manner (0.1-10μM).The inhibition of metabolic activation as a basis for the antigenotoxic action of sulforaphane in these systems (bacteria, rodent hepatocytes and human cells) is further supported by the lack of this chemopreventor to influence NaN3 mutagenicity in S. typhimurium and H202-induced DNA strand breakage in T5-neo cells. These findings suggest that inhibition of CYP2E1 and CYP1A by sulforaphane may contribute to its chemoprotective potential.
