Experimental laws of cratering for hypervelocity impacts of spherical projectiles into thick target

It is shown in this paper that the laws of cratering in a thick target under hypervelocity impact by a spherical projectile can be approximately expressed by the so-called iso-deviation law and a 2/3 power law. Moreover, hypervelocity impact should be characterized by the isotropic expansion of a crater. In the special case, when the projectile and target are of the same material, the laws mentioned above reduce to the result of a semi-spherical crater and the energy criterion. Generally speaking, a semi-spherical crater and the energy criterion are both approximations, which only take projectile density and target strength into account, and can be used for a rough estimation on the order of magnitude. The inconsistency in various fitted power laws in the literature was also clarified and explained in the paper.

Seed Longevity of Melaleuca quinquenervia: A Burial Experiment in South Florida

Burial and removal techniques with seed bags were used to examine the viability and longevity of Melaleuca quinquenervia seeds at four field sites representing different soil types and hydrological conditions in South Florida. Seed viability was determined over different burial durations in the soil through a combination of germination tests and 2,3,5-triphenyl- tetrazolium chloride (TTC) treatments. Control seeds kept dry at 25 C in the laboratory maintained same viability of ca. 15% over the 3-year study. In the field, seed viability decreased with increased burial duration.(PDF has 4 pages.)

When is a dock too long? What about crossing extended property lines? And at what point does a creek have too many docks? There are no easy answers to these questions. At the request of the Georgia Coastal Management Program, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center published in April 2003 an inventory of residential dock and pier management information for the southeastern U.S. This inventory builds upon that effort and includes five New England states and one municipality: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and the Town of Falmouth, Massachusetts. The fisheries laws and regulations presently operative in Nigeria are on marine waters. These include: 1) The Sea Fisheries Decree (Act) of 1971; 2) The Sea Licencing Regulations of 1971; 3) The Sea Fisheries (Fishing) Regulations of 1972; and 4) The exclusive Economic Zone Decree of 1978. Sampling was concentrated on the North Moor region and the series of ditches which drained this area to the Bristol Channel. Although most ditches were not deep the mud substratum precluded sampling from within the habitat. All samples were taken with a pond net from the banks. Efforts were made to sample each part of the habitat although in some ditches the macrophyte growth was so intense as to make sampling difficult particularly of the sediments. Organisms were identified on the 10 sampling sites.
