Introduction: The stair-climbing test (SCT) is considered a submaximal test of simple implementation and easy access, which assesses the individual’s functional capacity. Although widely used in surgical patients, there is no standardization regarding the height of the stair and verbal stimulus. Objectives: It was determine if verbal stimulus changes the stair-climbing time (SCt) in individuals over 50 years-old. We compared oxygenation, blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate and Borg scale between SCT performed with and without stimulation. Methods: We evaluated individuals with ages greater than 50 years-old that performed two STC (with and without verbal stimulation), in the stair with 44 steps, achieving 7.04 m in height and recording the time to climb the stair. The systolic blood pressure (SBP) and the diastolic blood pressure (DBP), respiratory rate (RR), pulse, oxygen saturation (SpO2 ) and Borg scale were evaluated before and after the tests. The time in the SCT with and without stimulation were compared using the Student test-t and the other variables were compared using the ANOVA test (p<0.05). Results: The average age was 59.75±6,40 years old in the 21 evaluated individuals. The time in the SCT without stimulus was significantly higher than the one with stimulus. The SBP, pulse, RR and Borg scale were significantly increased when compared to the SCT with and without stimulus. Oxygenation and DBP didn´t have significant differences at any time of the study. Conclusions: The time in the SCT was lower when performed with verbal stimulus. The SBP, pulse, RR and Borg scale changed significantly after the SCT with and without stimulus, remarking that this change was greater in the SCT with stimulus.

The effort test can be used to assess functional capacity, clinical hemodynamic and metabolic response at the effort, the risk of postoperative pulmonary complications and to assess the response of patients with lung diseases submitted to physiotherapy treatment. Among the stress tests we highlight the Six Minute Test Walk (6 MWT) and Stair Climbing Test (SCT), because they are easy to use and low cost. Especially the SCT is widely used in patients preoperatively. Objective: To compare the effects of six minute walk test and stair climbing test under the hemodynamic and oxygenation in healthy adults. Methods: We conducted a study with healthy subjects above 50 years. The fi rst performed was 6 MWT in quick step with encouragement, in a plan corridor of 30 meters, where the shade was determined the distance walked in 6 minutes, after 6 MWT was performed de SCT with encouragement, on a ladder in shade, consists of 44 steps, with 4 bids and bid by 11 steps, each step measured 16 cm in a total of 7.04 m of height, where the rise time was clocked. Before and after the two tests were measured respiratory rate, pulse, blood pressure and oxygen saturation. Results: We evaluated 21 patients with age 59.6 ± 5.4 years, 5 men and 16 women. The average distance covered on the 6MWT was 496.4 ± 102.2 meters and the average time in SCT 22.6 ± 5.4 seconds. The variables pulse, respiratory rate, systolic blood pressure and Borg scale presented a signifi - cant increase after the tests, however the variables oxygen saturation and diastolic blood pressure did not change signifi cantly. Conclusion: The variables pulse, respiratory rate, systolic blood pressure and Borg scale tests increased after six-minute walk test and stair climbing test but with greater signifi cance after the stair climbing test. Oxygen saturation and diastolic blood pressure did not change signifi cantly after the tests.

A Doença Renal Crônica (DRC) é considerada um problema mundial de saúde pública. O paciente com DRC apresenta baixa tolerância ao exercício físico e como conseqüência apresenta limitações na capacidade funcional e força muscular respiratória. O paciente com DRC em programa de hemodiálise pode sofrer impactos negativos na sua capacidade funcional. Objetivo: Avaliar a capacidade funcional e a força muscular respiratória associada ao exercício físico em pacientes com doença renal crônica que realizam hemodiálise. Metodologia: 28 pacientes de ambos os sexos com idade entre 40 e 60 anos participaram do estudo, em programa de hemodiálise no Instituto do Rim da Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Presidente Prudente-SP. Os pacientes foram avaliados pela força muscular inspiratória (PImax) e força muscular expiratória (PEmax) pela manovacuometria e Teste de Caminhada de Seis Minutos (TC6’) para avaliar a capacidade funcional. Após as avaliações, os pacientes iniciaram o programa de atividade física, com duração de oito semanas, realizado 3 vezes por semana durante 40 minutos na hemodiálise. Ao final do programa de exercícios físicos, os pacientes foram reavaliados. Resultados: Na avaliação da força muscular respiratória o valor da PImax pós foi significativamente maior que o valor obtido na avaliação pré programa (p<0,05), para a variável PEmax não foi encontrada diferença significativa entre os momentos pré e pós intervenção (p<0,05). As avaliações da capacidade funcional ou Teste de Caminhada de Seis Minutos (TC6’) inicial e após o programa de exercícios, não apresentaram diferenças significativas (p<0,05). Dados da Escala de Borg indicaram redução significativa do cansaço e dispnéia (p<0,05), após o programa de exercícios. The perceived exertion has been used for the intensity control and exercise prescription. Among the various scales that estimate the perceived exertion, the Borg’s RPE scale is one of the best known. However, for populations with low levels of schooling or with visual difficulties such as the elderly, the application of these scales becomes more difficult. In previous studies, a color scale of perceived exertion was developed to aim for assistance in application of the scale and interpretation of perceived exertion. This scale showed high correlation with the Borg’s scale and proved to be valid to estimate the perceived exertion. Thereby, the aim of this study was to assess the validity of the color scale of perceived exertion to measure the perceived exertion in adult women of different ages. Participated in the study 12 young adult women with age of 21,7 ± 1,5 years old, and 10 elderly women with age of 60,3 ± 3,5 years old. The participants were submitted to an incremental exercise of treadmill walking with stages of 2 minutes duration. The inicial load was 5,5 km/h and inclination of 6% for young women and 2% for elderly women, both with 2% increments at each stage completed, without changing the speed. Heart rate and oxygen comsuption responses were determined at the 30 finals seconds of each stage. At the 60 finals seconds of each stage participants indicated the perceived exertion for the overall body, for the legs and for the chest, primarily in the color scale and following in the tradicional Borg’s scale. The analysis of variance for repeated measures was used to assess the effect of different loads on the perceived exertion and physiological responses. The aim of this study was to investigate whether aerobic capacity (VO2max) would be modified by antihypertensive therapy in elderly and middle-age women after 12 weeks of exercise training. The volunteers were divided in two groups: normotensive (n=14) and hypertensive (n=14). Aerobic exercise was performed for 3 days/week, during 60 minutes, for 12 weeks with an intensity of 50-70% rest heart hate. Anthropometric parameters (weight and height), body fat index, % of fat mass, cardiopulmonary evaluation to calculated VO2max and a cardiovascular evaluation with blood pressure and rest heart hate were evaluated at baseline and after training program. At the end of study abdominal circumference and Borg scale were also evaluated. Our findings showed the aerobic program of 12 weeks was effective to reduce diastolic blood pressure in both groups. Systolic blood pressure was reduced only hypertensive group. No evidences were found the aerobic capacity was affected by hypertensive therapies. In conclusion, the aerobic program for 12 weeks was effective to reduce blood pressure and there was no influence of antihypertensive therapy on the aerobic capacity in this particular population.

This study developed a Color Scale of Perceived Exertion (RPE-color scale) and assessed its concurrent and construct validity in adult women. One hundred participants (18-77 years), who were habitual exercisers, associated colors with verbal anchors of the Borg RPE scale (RPE-Borg scale) for RPE-color scale development. For RPE-color scale validation, 12 Young (M = 21.7 yr., SD = 1.5) and 10 Older (M = 60.3 yr., SD = 3.5) adult women performed a maximal graded exercise test on a treadmill and reported perceived exertion in both RPE-color and RPE-Borg scales. In the Young group, the RPE-color scale was significantly associated with heart rate and oxygen consumption, having strong correlations with the RPE-Borg scale. In the Older group, the RPE-color scale was significantly associated with heart rate, having moderate to high correlations with the RPE-Borg scale. The RPE-color scale demonstrated concurrent and construct validity in the Young women, as well as construct validity in Older adults.

The aim of this study was to verify the use of exertion subjective perception to control warm-up intensity performed by continuous running in children. Twenty-one children (11,4 ± 0,8 years, 45 ± 9,8 kg e 153,6 ± 9,6 cm), performed warm-up by continuous running in randomic order in three conditions with diferent intensities using rate of perceived exertion (RPE). The intensities were chosen according to RPE Borg CR-10 and the arbitrary units used were three (B3), Five (B5) and nine (B9). The heart rate (HR) and mean velocity of the run (VEL) were evaluated to analyse the intensity of the three warm-up conditions. Statistical analysis was done by annova one-way followed by post-hoc tukey test, considering significant level of 5%. There were significant increase in HR (B3= 112 ± 10, B5 = 140 ± 18 e B9 = 176 ± 21 bpm) and VEL (B3 = 4,01 ± 0,5, B5 = 7,09 ± 1,22 e B9 = 10,97 ± 1,70 km/h) between B5 and B9 condition compared to B3. Moreover, in both parameters B9 presented significantly higher results compared to the condition B5. It´s possible to control warm-up intensity performed by continuous running in children using RPE Borg CR-10.
