Our objective was to determine whether anthropometric measurements of the midarm (MA) could identify subjects with whole body fat-free mass (FFM) depletion. Fifty-five patients (31% females; age: 64.6 ± 9.3 years) with mild/very severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), 18 smokers without COPD (39% females; age: 49.0 ± 7.3 years) and 23 never smoked controls (57% females; age: 48.2 ± 9.6 years) were evaluated. Spirometry, muscle strength and MA circumference were measured. MA muscle area was estimated by anthropometry and MA cross-sectional area by computerized tomography (CT) scan. Bioelectrical impedance was used as the reference method for FFM. MA circumference and MA muscle area correlated with FFM and biceps and triceps strength. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that MA circumference and MA muscle area cut-off points presented sensitivity and specificity >82% to discriminate FFM-depleted subjects. CT scan measurements did not provide improved sensitivity or specificity. For all groups, there was no significant statistical difference between MA muscle area [35.2 (29.3-45.0) cm²] and MA cross-sectional area values [36.4 (28.5-43.3) cm²] and the linear correlation coefficient between tests was r = 0.77 (P < 0.001). However, Bland-Altman plots revealed wide 95% limits of agreement (-14.7 to 15.0 cm²) between anthropometric and CT scan measurements. Anthropometric MA measurements may provide useful information for identifying subjects with whole body FFM depletion. This is a low-cost technique and can be used in a wider patient population to identify those likely to benefit from a complete body composition evaluation.

Foi avaliado o efeito do tipo de músculo e da maturação sobre algumas propriedades funcionais e sensoriais da carne caprina. Utilizaram-se os músculos longissimus dorsi, semimembranosus e biceps femoris de cabras com aproximadamente 20 meses de idade. A carne, sem maturar e maturada por sete dias, foi avaliada para perdas por cocção (PPC) e força de cisalhamento (FC), por métodos instrumentais, e para dureza sensorial (DS) e suculência sensorial (SS), por provadores treinados. As PPC não sofreram efeito significativo (p > 0,05) do tipo de músculo e da maturação da carne. A carne sem maturar do músculo semimembranosus apresentou maior FC que aquelas dos músculos longissimus dorsi e biceps femoris. Em relação ao tipo de músculo, após a maturação, as carnes dos músculos semimembranosus e biceps femoris se apresentaram mais macias que a do longissimus dorsi. Quanto ao efeito da maturação, a FC da carne do músculo semimembranosus diminuiu significativamente. A FC apresentou correlação positiva com DS e correlação negativa com SS. Dureza e suculência avaliadas de forma sensorial apresentaram correlação negativa. A maturação por 7 dias diminuiu a dureza, mas não afetou as PPC da carne dos músculos semimembranosus e bíceps femoris.

Utilizou-se o músculo Triceps brachii de cordeiros não castrados ½ Ile de France ½ Santa Inês terminados em confinamento para a realização das análises físico-químicas. Foram determinados: a umidade, a proteína, a gordura, as cinzas e os carboidratos da carne, in natura e assada, destes animais, assim como o rendimento desta carne, após o processo de cocção. A carne assada apresentou valores maiores de gordura e proteína (7,49 e 33,67%) em comparação com a carne in natura (5,36 e 18,85%), respectivamente. Os percentuais de cinzas e carboidratos não foram influenciados pelos tratamentos estudados, porém para os valores de umidade, a carne in natura obteve valores superiores ao da carne assada, 74,05 e 57,02%, respectivamente. A carne assada teve perdas durante o seu preparo por evaporação, por gotejamento e por cocção de 33,20, 1,36 e 35,20%, respectivamente. Concluiu-se que a carne assada apresenta valor nutricional mais elevado que a carne in natura, para os teores de gordura e proteína, pelo fato da carne in natura apresentar maior valor de umidade em relação à assada, ocasionando assim a concentração de gordura e de proteína na carne assada. O preparo da carne ocasionou perdas por cocção de 35,20%, por gotejamento e evaporação.

A carne soleada é um produto similar à carne de sol e originária exclusivamente do Pantanal. O objetivo foi avaliar variáveis físico-químicas e microbiológicas da carne soleada produzida em sistema modelo. Foram avaliados os efeitos da utilização dos recursos tecnológicos do congelamento e embalagem a vácuo sobre as variáveis microbiológicas. Prepararam-se amostras usando o corte comercial coxão duro (m. biceps femural) e avaliadas as variáveis de pH, atividade de água, teor de cloretos e perdas de água por pressão, exsudação e cozimento. As contagens de S. aureus e E. coli foram realizadas na matéria-prima, carne soleada in natura e carne soleada congelada e embalada a vácuo. Os resultados mostram que a carne soleada precisa de adaptações para que se possa sugerir sua produção em escala. A atividade de água com valor médio de 0,97, pH em 5,72 e teor de cloretos em torno de 2,7% sugerem um produto com baixa vida de prateleira e que pode ser substrato para microrganismos patogênicos para o homem. O congelamento e a embalagem a vácuo não são recursos adequados para a conservação da carne soleada tradicional.

Twenty-six sedentary, college-aged females were matched and randomly assigned to one of two groups. The massed group (n=13) completed 15 maximal isometric elbow flexion strength trials in one session, while the distributed group (n=13) performed five such contractions on three successive days. After a two-week and three month rest interval, both groups returned to perfonn another five maximal isometric elbow flexion strength trials to assess retention of any potential strength gains. Elbow flexion torque and surface electromyography (SEMG) of the biceps and triceps were monitored concurrently. There was a significant (P < 0.05) increase in strength in both groups from block one (first five contractions) to block four (first retest) and from block one to block five (second retest). Both groups exhibited a similar linear increasing (P < 0.05) trend in biceps root-mean-square (RMS) SEMG amplitude. A significant (P < 0.05) decrease in triceps RMS SEMG amplitude was found between block one and block four for the distributed group. However, a significant (P < 0.05) increase was then found between block one and five for the massed group, and between blocks four and five for distributed group. These results suggest that there is flexibility in resistive exercise schedules. An increase in neural drive to the agonist muscle continued throughout testing. This was accompanied by a reduction in antagonist co activation that was a short-tenn (two weeks) training effect, dissipated over the longer rest interval (three months).

Il existe plusieurs théories du contrôle moteur, chacune présumant qu’une différente variable du mouvement est réglée par le cortex moteur. On trouve parmi elles la théorie du modèle interne qui a émis l’hypothèse que le cortex moteur programme la trajectoire du mouvement et l’activité électromyographique (EMG) d’une action motrice. Une autre, appelée l’hypothèse du point d’équilibre, suggère que le cortex moteur établisse et rétablisse des seuils spatiaux; les positions des segments du corps auxquelles les muscles et les réflexes commencent à s’activer. Selon ce dernier, les paramètres du mouvement sont dérivés sans pré-programmation, en fonction de la différence entre la position actuelle et la position seuil des segments du corps. Pour examiner de plus près ces deux théories, nous avons examiné l’effet d’un changement volontaire de l’angle du coude sur les influences cortico-spinales chez des sujets sains en employant la stimulation magnétique transcrânienne (TMS) par-dessus le site du cortex moteur projetant aux motoneurones des muscles du coude. L’état de cette aire du cerveau a été évalué à un angle de flexion du coude activement établi par les sujets, ainsi qu’à un angle d’extension, représentant un déplacement dans le plan horizontal de 100°. L’EMG de deux fléchisseurs du coude (le biceps et le muscle brachio-radial) et de deux extenseurs (les chefs médial et latéral du triceps) a été enregistrée. L’état d’excitabilité des motoneurones peut influer sur les amplitudes des potentiels évoqués moteurs (MEPs) élicitées par la TMS. Deux techniques ont été entreprises dans le but de réduire l’effet de cette variable. La première était une perturbation mécanique qui raccourcissait les muscles à l'étude, produisant ainsi une période de silence EMG. La TMS a été envoyée avec un retard après la perturbation qui entraînait la production du MEP pendant la période de silence. La deuxième technique avait également le but d’équilibrer l’EMG des muscles aux deux angles du coude. Des forces assistantes ont été appliquées au bras par un moteur externe afin de compenser les forces produites par les muscles lorsqu’ils étaient actifs comme agonistes d’un mouvement. Les résultats des deux séries étaient analogues. Un muscle était facilité quand il prenait le rôle d’agoniste d’un mouvement, de manière à ce que les MEPs observés dans le biceps fussent de plus grandes amplitudes quand le coude était à la position de flexion, et ceux obtenus des deux extenseurs étaient plus grands à l’angle d’extension. Les MEPs examinés dans le muscle brachio-radial n'étaient pas significativement différents aux deux emplacements de l’articulation. Ces résultats démontrent que les influences cortico-spinales et l’activité EMG peuvent être dissociées, ce qui permet de conclure que la voie cortico-spinale ne programme pas l’EMG à être générée par les muscles. Ils suggèrent aussi que le système cortico-spinal établit les seuils spatiaux d’activation des muscles lorsqu’un segment se déplace d’une position à une autre. Cette idée suggère que des déficiences dans le contrôle des seuils spatiaux soient à la base de certains troubles moteurs d’origines neurologiques tels que l’hypotonie et la spasticité.

Problématique. L'utilisation d'un chien d'assistance à la mobilité (CAM) représente une option novatrice pour préserver l’intégrité des membres supérieurs (MSs) chez les utilisateurs de fauteuil roulant manuel (FRM). Aucune étude biomécanique n’a quantifié les effets du CAM sur les efforts aux MSs lors de la montée d’un plan incliné. Objectif. Cette étude quasi-expérimentale vise à comparer les efforts aux MSs lors de la montée d’un plan incliné avec et sans l’assistance d’un CAM. Méthodologie. Dix participants avec une lésion de la moelle épinière (LME) qui utilisent un FRM et possèdent un CAM ont monté un plan incliné à trois reprises avec et sans l’assistance du CAM. Les forces appliquées sur les cerceaux, mesurées avec des roues instrumentées, et les mouvements du FRM et des MSs, enregistrés avec un système d'analyse du mouvement, ont permis de mesurer les efforts mécaniques aux MSs. Simultanément, l'activité électromyographique (EMG) des muscles grand pectoral, deltoïde antérieur, biceps et triceps a été enregistrée et normalisée avec sa valeur maximale pour mesurer les efforts musculaires aux MSs. Résultats. En général, le CAM réduit significativement les valeurs moyennes et maximales de la force totale appliquée aux cerceaux et de sa composante tangentielle, des moments nets de flexion, de rotation interne et d’adduction aux épaules et des taux d’utilisation musculaire du deltoïde antérieur, du biceps et du triceps. Conclusion. L’assistance d’un CAM réduit les efforts aux MSs lors de la montée d’un plan incliné chez les utilisateurs d’un FRM ayant une LME.

El dolor de hombro es una de las causas más frecuentes de consulta médica general. El Síndrome de Manguito Rotatorio emerge durante los años 2003 y 2004 como la quinta causa de morbilidad profesional en Colombia, ocupando el segundo lugar a nivel del miembro superior. La gran mayoría de estudios han encontrado una clara relación entre los trastornos musculoesqueléticos de hombro y el tipo de trabajo. Se ha descrito una alta relación del hombro doloroso asociado a profesiones manualmente intensas, es evidente la asociación entre la actividad laboral con el brazo elevado con patologías de hombro. Dentro de los factores individuales predisponentes se encuentran: Edad mayor, género femenino, dominancia del miembro superior, alto índice de masa corporal, sintomatología osteomuscular previa, baja realización de ejercicio, embarazo; hábitos de consumo y enfermedades metabólicas concomitantes. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo de corte transversal, examinando las historias clínicas de 117 trabajadores calificados por diagnóstico de Síndrome de Manguito Rotatorio en el área de Medicina Laboral de una Entidad Promotora de Salud privada, durante año 2.013. El objetivo principal de este estudio fue identificar las variables relacionadas como factores influyentes en la causalidad de esta patología. Se estudió la asociación bivariada entre los diferentes factores de riesgo (personales y laborales) de interés y la determinación del origen laboral del Síndrome de Manguito Rotatorio mediante la obtención de la medida de asociación correspondiente (Odds ratio). La investigación permitió identificar que el mayor porcentaje de calificación del origen del S.M.R. es el laboral con el 86.6% de la población estudiada, el 11.8% restante tiene una calificación de origen común. Todos los trabajadores estudiados presentaron sintomatología dolorosa a nivel del hombro en calificación 100%. La imagen diagnostica utilizada para la calificación de la patología fue la Resonancia Magnética de hombro 97.5%. Se encontró relación de causalidad entre la presentación de la patología con el género femenino, la edad con rango entre 30 y 45 años, el hábito de fumar y la no realización de ejercicio. Como conclusión final se obtiene que los resultados obtenidos concuerdan con lo descrito en la literatura a nivel mundial en trabajadores, en los cuales influyen los aspectos personales y laborales descritos como variables en el presente estudio con relación a la calificación del origen laboral del Síndrome de Manguito Rotatorio.

Chemical compositions and physical properties of mixed-sex Thai indigenous (Gallus domesticus) and broiler (commercial breed, CP707) chicken biceps femoris and pectoralis muscles were determined. Indigenous chicken muscles contained higher protein contents but lower fat and ash contents compared to broiler muscles (P < 0.001). The amino acid profile of the indigenous chicken muscles was similar to that of the broiler muscles except they were slightly richer in glutamic acid (P < 0.05). The indigenous chicken muscles contained more saturated and less polyunsaturated fatty acids than the broiler muscles. There were no differences in the monounsaturated fatty acid contents between the breeds. The total collagen contents of indigenous pectoralis and biceps femoris muscles were 5.09 and 12.85 mg/g, respectively, which were higher than those found in broiler pectoralis (3.86 mg/g) and biceps femoris muscles (8.70 mg/g) (P < 0.001). Soluble collagen contents were lower for indigenous pectoralis and biceps femoris muscles, 22.16 vs. 31.38% and 26.06 vs. 33.87%, respectively. The CIE system values of lightness (L*), redness (a*), and yellowness (b*) of indigenous chicken muscles were higher than those of broiler muscles. The shear values of indigenous chicken muscles either raw or cooked were higher than those of broiler muscles (P < 0.05). After cooking, the shear values decreased for broiler biceps femoris and pectoralis muscles (P < 0.05), whereas no change was observed for indigenous chicken biceps femoris muscle (P > 0.05). Shear values increased for indigenous chicken pectoralis muscle (P < 0.05).

The microstructure and thermal characteristics of Thai indigenous (Gallus domesticus) and broiler chicken (commercial line CP707) biceps femoris and pectoralis muscles were determined. Perimysium thicknesses were 14.2 mum for biceps femoris muscle and 7.10 mum for pectoralis muscle of indigenous chicken muscles, thicker than those of broiler muscles, which were 9.93 mum for biceps femoris muscle and 3.87 mum for pectoralis muscle (P < 0.05). Five endothermic peaks with peak transition temperatures (T-p) of 54.9, 61.7, 65.4, 70.6, and 76.1degreesC were obtained for broiler pectoralis muscle, whereas only 3 endothermic peaks (T-P of 56.6, 62.6, and 74.9degreesC were obtained for broiler biceps femoris muscle. Thai indigenous biceps femoris and pectoralis muscles had endothermic peaks with T-P ranges of 53.5 to 54.8, 60.7 to 61.9, and 75.9 to 76.9degreesC. The fiber diameters of Thai indigenous chicken muscles were greater (P < 0.05) than those of the broiler, 31.7 vs. 20.4 mum for biceps femoris muscle and 28.9 vs. 26.6 pm for pectoralis muscle, respectively. After cooking at 80degreesC for 10 min, the fiber diameter of indigenous chicken muscles significantly decreased while those of the broiler significantly increased. The mean of sarcomere lengths of the raw muscles ranged from 1.56 to 1.64 mun and decreased to 0.92 to 1.32 mum (P < 0.001) for broiler muscles and 1.22 to 1.35 mum (P < 0.001) for indigenous chicken muscles after cooking. The perimysium and endomysium of broiler muscles melted after cooking at 80degreesC, however, only slight disintegration was observed in these tissues in the indigenous chicken muscles.

STUDY DESIGN: Randomized crossover double-blinded placebo-controlled trial. OBJECTIVE: To investigate if low-level laser therapy (LLLT) can affect biceps muscle performance, fatigue development, and biochemical markers of postexercise recovery. BACKGROUND: Cell and animal studies have suggested that LLLT can reduce oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in muscle tissue. But it remains uncertain whether these findings can translate into humans in sport and exercise situations. METHODS: Nine healthy male volleyball players participated in the study. They received either active LLLT (cluster probe with 5 laser diodes; A = 810 nm; 200 mW power output; 30 seconds of irradiation, applied in 2 locations over the biceps of the nondominant arm; 60 J of total energy) or placebo LLLT using an identical cluster probe. The intervention or placebo were applied 3 minutes before the performance of exercise. All subjects performed voluntary elbow flexion repetitions with a workload of 75% of their maximal voluntary contraction force until exhaustion. RESULTS: Active LLLT increased the number of repetitions by 14.5% (mean +/- SD, 39.6 +/- 4.3 versus 34.6 +/- 5.6; P = .037) and the elapsed time before exhaustion by 8.0% (P = .034), when compared to the placebo treatment. The biochemical markers also indicated that recovery may be positively affected by LLLT, as indicated by postexercise blood lactate levels (P<.01), creatine kinase activity (P = .017), and C-reactive protein levels (P = .047), showing a faster recovery with LLLT application prior to the exercise. CONCLUSION: We conclude that pre-exercise irradiation of the biceps with an LLLT dose of 6 J per application location, applied in 2 locations, increased endurance for repeated elbow flexion against resistance and decreased postexercise levels of blood lactate, creatine kinase, and C-reactive protein. Background and Objectives: There are some indications that low-level laser therapy (LLLT) may delay the development of skeletal muscle fatigue during high-intensity exercise. There have also been claims that LED cluster probes may be effective for this application however there are differences between LED and laser sources like spot size, spectral width, power output, etc. In this study we wanted to test if light emitting diode therapy (LEDT) can alter muscle performance, fatigue development and biochemical markers for skeletal muscle recovery in an experimental model of biceps humeri muscle contractions. Study Design/Materials and Methods: Ten male professional volleyball players (23.6 [SD +/- 5.6] years old) entered a randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled crossover trial. Active cluster LEDT (69 LEDs with wavelengths 660/850 nm, 10/30 mW, 30 seconds total irradiation time, 41.7J of total energy irradiated) or an identical placebo LEDT was delivered under double-blinded conditions to the middle of biceps humeri muscle immediately before exercise. All subjects performed voluntary biceps humeri contractions with a workload of 75% of their maximal voluntary contraction force (MVC) until exhaustion. Results: Active LEDT increased the number of biceps humeri contractions by 12.9% (38.60 [SD +/- 9.03] vs. 34.20 [SD +/- 8.68], P = 0.021) and extended the elapsed time to perform contractions by 11.6% (P = 0.036) versus placebo. In addition, post-exercise levels of biochemical markers decreased significantly with active LEDT: Blood Lactate (P = 0.042), Creatine Kinase (P = 0.035), and C-Reative Protein levels (P = 0.030), when compared to placebo LEDT. Conclusion: We conclude that this particular procedure and dose of LEDT immediately before exhaustive biceps humeri contractions, causes a slight delay in the development of skeletal muscle fatigue, decreases post-exercise blood lactate levels and inhibits the release of Creatine Kinase and C-Reative Protein. This study aimed to investigate the effect of 830 nm low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on skeletal muscle fatigue. Ten healthy male professional volleyball players entered a crossover randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled trial. Active LLLT (830 nm wavelength, 100 mW output, spot size 0.0028 cm(2), 200 s total irradiation time) or an identical placebo LLLT was delivered to four points on the biceps humeri muscle immediately before exercises. All subjects performed voluntary biceps humeri contractions with a load of 75% of the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) force until exhaustion. After active LLLT the mean number of repetitions was significantly higher than after placebo irradiation [mean difference 4.5, standard deviation (SD) +/- 6.0, P = 0.042], the blood lactate levels increased after exercises, but there was no significant difference between the treatments. We concluded that 830 nm LLLT can delay the onset of skeletal muscle fatigue in high-intensity exercises, in spite of increased blood lactate levels.

DIEFENTHAELER, F. Avaliação dos efeitos da posição do selim na técnica da pedalada de ciclistas: estudo de casos. Dissertação de mestrado. Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências do Movimento Humano. Escola de Educação Física. Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, 2004. Tendo em vista a importância da otimização das forças aplicadas no pedal por ciclistas, o presente estudo objetivou analisar os efeitos de diferentes posturas do ciclista durante a pedalada, por meio da variação da posição do selim, e relacionando-as com as seguintes variáveis: (1) economia de movimento (EC); (2) aplicação das forças no pedal; (3) índice de efetividade (IE) da pedalada; (4) alterações nos ângulos das articulações do tronco, do quadril, do joelho e do tornozelo; e (5) ativação dos músculos selecionados. Participaram deste estudo três ciclistas da elite gaúcha. O protocolo constou da avaliação de quatro diferentes posições de selim (mais para frente, mais para trás, mais para cima e mais para baixo) a partir da posição de referência na qual o ciclista treina e na sua cadência preferida. Os atletas permaneceram durante 30 s em cada posição, contados após a estabilização da taxa da troca respiratória entre 0,90 e 1. A avaliação foi realizada em um ciclossimulador magnético com a bicicleta do atleta, na qual foi acoplado um pedal instrumentado para obtenção das forças aplicadas no pedal. Os músculos do membro inferior direito monitorados para a eletromiografia foram estes: gluteus maximus, rectus femoris, biceps femoris, vastus lateralis, gastrocnemius medialis e tibialis anterior. A partir das forças normal e tangencial, foram calculadas as forças resultante e efetiva para obtenção do IE. A EC foi calculada a partir do VO2 e da potência gerada. Para a análise dos dados, foi utilizada a média de 10 ciclos consecutivos de pedalada. Os resultados obtidos demonstraram que os ajustes na posição do selim modificaram a direção e a magnitude das forças e, conseqüentemente, o IE; e que os três ciclistas avaliados apresentaram IE e EC maiores na posição de referência. Os dados cinemáticos mostraram pequenas variações nos ângulos articulares em função das mudanças na posição do selim. A ativação muscular apresentou variação no período de ativação assim como na magnitude do valor RMS, nas diferentes posições de selim avaliadas.
