A low-voltage low-power 2nd-order CMOS pseudo-differential bump-equalizer is presented. Its topology comprises a bandpass section with adjustable center frequency and quality factor, together with a programmable current amplifier. The basic building blocks are triode-operating transconductors, tunable by means of either a DC voltage or a digitally controlled current divider. The bump-equalizer as part of a battery-operated hearing aid device is designed for a 1.4V-supply and a 0.35μm CMOS fabrication process. The circuit performance is supported by a set of simulation results, which indicates a center frequency from 600Hz to 2.4kHz, 1≤Q≤5, and an adjustable gain within ±6dB at center frequency. The filter dynamic range lies around 40dB. Quiescent consumption is kept below 12μW for any configuration of the filter.

This paper describes a high senstivity low cost capacitive strain gage sensor. The theory, design, and sensor construction details are presented. It consists of eight capacitive sensors connected in two full bridges. The capacitive strain gage sensor structure was designed in order to produce high sensitivity and low dependence with temperature. By using a simple signal conditioning circuit constituted by a differential amplifier, a band-pass filter, and a precision rectifier the device can measure forces with resolution of 0.009 N and precision of 98.7%. It is rugged, presents linear response, and good repeatability. It presents sensitivity of 8.7 V/N and fall time of 12 ms.

The inclusion of the corona effect in a frequency dependent transmission line model is proposed in this paper. The transmission line is represented through a cascade of π circuits and the frequency dependence of the longitudinal parameters is synthesized with series and parallel resistors and inductors. The corona effect will be represented using the Gary and Skilling-Umoto models. The currents and voltages along the line are calculated by using state-space technique. To demonstrate the accuracy and validity of the proposed frequency dependent line model, time domain simulations of a 10 km length single-phase line response under energization procedure will be presented. ©2008 IEEE.

In a general way, in an electric power utility the current transformers (CT) are used to measurement and protection of transmission lines (TL) 1 The Power Line Carriers systems (PLC) are used for communication between electrical substations and transmission line protection. However, with the increasing use of optical fiber to communication (due mainly to its high data transmission rate and low signal-noise relation) this application loses potentiality. Therefore, other functions must be defined to equipments that are still in using, one of them is detecting faults (short-circuits) and transmission lines insulator strings damages 2. The purpose of this paper is to verify the possibility of using the path to the ground offered by the CTs instead of capacitive couplings / capacitive potential transformers to detect damaged insulators, since the current transformers are always present in all transmission lines (TL's) bays. To this a comparison between this new proposal and the PLC previous proposed system 2 is shown, evaluating the economical and technical points of view. ©2010 IEEE.

The phases of a transmission line are tightly coupled due to mutual impedances and admittances of the line. One way to accomplish the calculations of currents and voltages in multi-phase lines consists in representing them in modal domain, where its n coupled phases are represented by their n propagation modes. The separation line in their modes of propagation is through the use of a modal transformation matrix whose columns are eigenvectors associated with the parameters of the line. Usually, this matrix is achieved through numerical methods which does not allow the achievement of an analytical model for line developed directly in the phases domain. This work will show the modal transformation matrix of a hypothetical two-phase obtained with numerical and analytical procedures. It will be shown currents and voltage s at terminals of the line taking into account the use of modal transformation matrices obtained by using numerical and analytical procedures. © 2011 IEEE.

A new methodology for the synthesis of tunable patch filters is presented. The methodology helps the designer to perform a theoretical analysis of the filter through a coupling matrix that includes the effect of the tuning elements used to tune the filter. This general methodology accounts for any tuning parameter desired and was applied to the design of a tunable dual-mode patch filter with independent control of center frequency and bandwidth (BW). The bandpass filter uses a single triangular resonator with two etched slots that split the fundamental degenerate modes and form the filter passband. Varactor diodes assembled across the slots are used to vary the frequency of each degenerate fundamental mode independently, which is feasible due to the nature of the coupling scheme of the filter. The varactor diode model used in simulations, their assembling, the dc bias configuration, and measured results are presented. The theory results are compared to the simulations and to measurements showing a very good agreement and validating the proposed methodology. The fabricated filter presents an elliptic response with 20% of center frequency tuning range around 3.2 GHz and a fractional BW variation from 4% to 12% with low insertion loss and high power handling with a 1-dB compression point higher than +14.5 dB.

New Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) observing modes have extended the Hubble Space Telescope's spectral range to wavelengths between 900-1150 Å. However, the G140L/1280 and the Cycle 19 available G130M central wavelengths (1055 and 1096) that sample below 1150 Å were only available at focus positions which provided low-resolution (R<3,000). For HST Cycle 20, we introduced a new G130M/1222 central wavelength that covers 1065-1365 Å with R>10,000 everywhere, but optimized for 15000 from 1080-1200 Å. This mode places geo-coronal Lyα between the COS FUV detector segments to minimize detector gain sag. Also for Cycle 20, the resolution of the G130M/1055 and 1096 modes will be increased by a factor of 3-4 by optimizing the focus positions for these modes. This will give HST approximately the effective area of FUSE over the FUSE bandpass at 10,000. Here we present the current calibration status of the COS G130M/1055, 1096, and 1222 central wavelength settings at the original and second FUV lifetime positions with an emphasis on observing over the "Lyman UV", or "LUV", 912-1216 Å.

The purpose of this study is to explore a Kalman Filter approach to estimating swing of crane-suspended loads. Measuring real-time swing is needed to implement swing damping control strategies where crane joints are used to remove energy from a swinging load. The typical solution to measuring swing uses an inertial sensor attached to the hook block. Measured hook block twist is used to resolve the other two sensed body rates into tangential and radial swing. Uncertainty in the twist measurement leads to inaccurate tangential and radial swing calculations and ineffective swing damping. A typical mitigation approach is to bandpass the inertial sensor readings to remove low frequency drift and high frequency noise. The center frequency of the bandpass filter is usually designed to track the load length and the pass band width set to trade off performance with damping loop gain. The Kalman Filter approach developed here allows all swing motions (radial, tangential and twist) to be measured without the use of a bandpass filter. This provides an alternate solution for swing damping control implementation. After developing a Kalman Filter solution for a two-dimensional swing scenario, the three-dimensional system is considered where simplifying assumptions, suggested by the two-dimensional study, are exploited. One of the interesting aspects of the three-dimensional study is the hook block twist model. Unlike the mass-independence of a pendulum's natural frequency, the twist natural frequency depends both on the pendulum length and the load’s mass distribution. The linear Kalman Filter is applied to experimental data demonstrating the ability to extract the individual swing components for complex motions. It should be noted that the three-dimensional simplifying assumptions preclude the ability to measure two "secondary" hook block rotations. The ability to segregate these motions from the primary swing degrees of freedom was illustrated in the two-dimensional study and could be included into the three-dimensional solution if they were found to be important for a particular application.

Background: Schizophrenic symptoms commonly are felt to indicate a loosened coordination, i.e. a decreased connectivity of brain processes. Methods: To address this hypothesis directly, global and regional multichannel electroencephalographic (EEG) complexities (omega complexity and dimensional complexity) and single channel EEG dimensional complexities were calculated from 19-channel EEG data from 9 neuroleptic-naive, first-break, acute schizophrenics and 9 age- and sex-matched controls. Twenty artifact-free 2 second EEG epochs during resting with closed eyes were analyzed (2–30 Hz bandpass, average reference for global and regional complexities, local EEG gradient time series for single channels). Results: Anterior regional Omega-Complexity was significantly increased in schizophrenics compared with controls (p < 0.001) and anterior regional Dimensional Complexity showed a trend for increase. Single channel Dimensional Complexity of local gradient waveshapes was prominently increased in the schizophrenics at the right precentral location (p = 0.003). Conclusions: The results indicate a loosened cooperativity or coordination (vice versa: an increased independence) of the active brain processes in the anterior brain regions of the schizophrenics.

Deep marine successions of early Campanian age from DSDP site 516F drilled at low paleolatitudes in the South Atlantic reveal distinct sub-Milankovitch variability in addition to precession and eccentricity related variations. Elemental abundance ratios point to a similar 5 climatic origin for these variations and exclude a quadripartite structure - as observed in the Mediterranean Neogene - of the precession related cycles as an explanation for the inferred semi-precession cyclicity in MS. However, the semi-precession cycle itself is likely an artifact, reflecting the first harmonic of the precession signal. The sub-Milankovitch variability is best approximated by a ~ 7 kyr cycle as shown by 10 spectral analysis and bandpass filtering. The presence of sub-Milankovitch cycles with a period similar to that of Heinrich events of the last glacial cycle is consistent with linking the latter to low-latitude climate change caused by a non-linear response to precession induced variations in insolation between the tropics.

Upper Paleocene to lower Eocene sediments drilled at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1051 (Blake Nose, off Florida) display well-defined orbital cycles, a detailed magnetic stratigraphy, and a suite of planktonic foraminiferal datums. We derived a cyclostratigraphy by using spectral analysis of high-resolution records of elemental concentrations obtained by an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) Core Scanner. XRF counts of iron serve as a proxy for the relative amount of terrestrial material. Sliding-window spectral analysis, bandpass filtering, and direct counting of precession and obliquity cycles yield minimum durations for magnetic polarity chrons C22 to C26 (~49 to ~61 Ma), calculations of sediment accumulation rates, as well as constraints on the timing of biostratigraphic and climatological events in the vicinity of the Initial Eocene Thermal Maximum (IETM). Durations of polarity chrons as represented in sediments drilled at Site 1051 were estimated using a conservative assignment of 41 k.y. for obliquity cycles and 21 k.y. for precession cycles. Combined polarity chrons C26r and C26n span 3.61 m.y., and chron C25r spans 1.07 m.y. Polarity chron C24r is estimated as 2.877 m.y. The interpretation of polarity chron C24n is ambiguous, but its duration is probably <1.23 m.y. Polarity chron C23r spans 0.53 m.y., chron C23n is 0.74 m.y., and chron C22r is 0.9 m.y. Spectral analysis through this interval indicates that spectral peaks shift through time and are related to changes in sedimentation rate in Site 1051. The sedimentation rates dramatically increased ~200 k.y. after the IETM and remained high for most of chron C24r.

The seismic data were acquired north of the Knipovich Ridge on the western Svalbard margin during cruise MSM21/4. They were recorded using a Geometrics GeoEel streamer of either 120 channels (profiles p100-p208) or 88 channels (profiles p300-p805) with a group spacing of 1.56 m and a sampling rate of 2 kHz. A GI-Gun (2×1.7 l) with a main frequency of ~150 Hz was used as a source and operated at a shot interval of 6-8 s. Processing of profiles p100-p208 and p600-p805: Positions for each channel were calculated by backtracking along the profiles from the GI-Gun GPS positions. The shot gathers were analyzed for abnormal amplitudes below the seafloor reflection by comparing neighboring traces in different frequency bands within sliding time windows. To suppress surface-generated water noise, a tau-p filter was applied in the shot gather domain. Common mid-point (CMP) profiles were then generated through crooked-line binning with a CMP spacing of 1.5625 m. A zero-phase band-pass filter with corner frequencies of 60 Hz and 360 Hz was applied to the data. Based on regional velocity information from MCS data [Sarkar, 2012], an interpolated and extrapolated 3D interval velocity model was created below the digitized seafloor reflection of the high-resolution streamer data. This velocity model was used to apply a CMP stack and an amplitude-preserving Kirchhoff post-stack time migration. Processing of profiles p400-p500: Data were sampled at 0.5 ms and sorted into common midpoint (CMP) domain with a bin spacing of 5 m. Normal move out correction was carried out with a velocity of 1500 m s-1 and an Ormsby bandpass filter with corner frequencies at 40, 80, 600 and 1000 Hz was applied. The data were time migrated using the water velocity.

In this project, we study and analize digital signal processing in order to design an accelerometer-based application. We use a hardware card of evaluation, based on DSP, to make different tests. This project is based in design digital filters for an automotion application. The accelerometer type is 1201F. First, we study digital processing theory and main parameters of real filters, to make a design based on the application environment. Along the application, we comment all the different steps: computer design (Matlab), filter design on the DSP (C language), simulation test on the DSP without the accelerometer, accelerometer calibration, final tests on the accelerometer... Hardware and software tools used are: Kit of Evaluation 21-161-N, based on DSP, of Analog Devices (equiped with software development tool Visual DSP 4.5++), 1201-F accelerometer, CS-18-LF calibration system of SPEKTRA and software tools MATLAB 7.5 and CoolEditPRO 2.0. We only perform 2nd orden IIR filters, all-type : Butterworth, Chebyshev I and II and Ellyptics. We perform bandpass and stopband filters, with very narrow band, taking advantage of the accelerometer's full scale. Once all the evidence, both simulations and physical, are finished, filters having better performance and analyzed and selected to draw conclusions. As there is a suitable environment for it, the filters are combined together in different ways to obtain higher order filters (parallel structure). Thus, from band-pass filters, we can obtain many configurations that will give us greater flexibility. The purpose of this project is not only based on good results in filtering, but also to exploit the facilities of the environment and the available tools to make the most efficient design possible.
