Zooplankton samples were taken in five depth strata using a Multinet type Midi, with 50 µm nets. The samples were taken during the second leg only, three times at station 1, two times at station 2 and once at station 3. Zooplankton were identified to species / genus and life-stage, and at least 300 individuals were counted per sample. 10 individuals of each stage / species were measured and the numbers of eggs counted.

The metabolic rate of organisms may either be viewed as a basic property from which other vital rates and many ecological patterns emerge and that follows a universal allometric mass scaling law; or it may be considered a property of the organism that emerges as a result of the organism's adaptation to the environment, with consequently less universal mass scaling properties. Data on body mass, maximum ingestion and clearance rates, respiration rates and maximum growth rates of animals living in the ocean epipelagic were compiled from the literature, mainly from original papers but also from previous compilations by other authors. Data were read from tables or digitized from graphs. Only measurements made on individuals of know size, or groups of individuals of similar and known size were included. We show that clearance and respiration rates have life-form-dependent allometries that have similar scaling but different elevations, such that the mass-specific rates converge on a rather narrow size-independent range. In contrast, ingestion and growth rates follow a near-universal taxa-independent ~3/4 mass scaling power law. We argue that the declining mass-specific clearance rates with size within taxa is related to the inherent decrease in feeding efficiency of any particular feeding mode. The transitions between feeding mode and simultaneous transitions in clearance and respiration rates may then represent adaptations to the food environment and be the result of the optimization of tradeoffs that allow sufficient feeding and growth rates to balance mortality.

Comprehensive biogeochemical studies including determination of isotopic composition of organic carbon in both suspended matter and surface layer (0-1 cm) bottom sediments (more than 260 determinations of d13C-Corg) were carried out for five Arctic shelf seas: White, Barents, Kara, East Siberian, and Chukchi Seas. The aim of this study is to elucidate causes that change isotopic composition of particulate organic carbon at the water-sediment boundary. It is shown that isotopic composition of organic carbon in sediments from seas with high river run-off (White, Kara, and East Siberian Seas) does not inherit isotopic composition of organic carbon in particles precipitating from the water column, but is enriched in 13C. Seas with low river run-off (Barents and Chukchi Seas) show insignificant difference between d13C-Corg values in both suspended load and sediments because of low content of isotopically light allochthonous organic matter in suspended matter. Biogeochemical studies with radioisotope tracers (14CO2, 35S, and 14CH4) revealed existence of specific microbial filter formed from heterotrophic and autotrophic organisms at the water-sediment boundary. This filter prevents mass influx of products of organic matter decomposition into the water column, as well as reduces influx of OM contained in suspended matter from water into sediments.

This work presents results of a study of plankton and benthic microbiocenoses of the Amur River estuary. It is shown that distribution of total abundance and indicator groups of bacteriobenthos are characterized by stronger heterogeneity compared with bacterioplankton and that it depends on the Amur River runoff and bottom type. The river runoff helps by increasing overall bacterioplankton abundance in the near-mouth part of the estuary. Microorganisms utilizing low concentrations of organic matter (OM) play major role in processes of OM utilization in water and bottom sediments. Saprophytic bacteria play a significant role in OM utilization only in water at certain sampling sites in the Tatarsky Strait and Sakhalin Bay and in bottom sediments sampled in the mouth part of the estuary. Some parts of the estuary subjected to organic contamination are found according to microbiological characteristics. It is shown that fluctuation of salinity leads to change of the role of bacteria with different food demands in the microbial community.

Lipids of the Arctic ctenophore Mertensia ovum, collected from Kongsfjorden (Svalbard) in 2001, were analysed to investigate seasonal variability and fate of dietary lipids. Total lipids, lipid classes and fatty acid and alcohol compositions were determined in animals, which were selected according to age-group and season. Changes in lipids of age-group 0 animals were followed during growth from spring to autumn. Total lipids increased from May to September. Lipids as percentage of dry mass were lowest in August indicating their use for reproduction. Higher values occurred in September, which may be due to lipid storage for overwintering. Wax esters were the major lipid class accounting for about 50% of total lipids in age-group 0 animals from July and August. Phospholipids were the second largest lipid fraction with up to 46% in this age-group. The principal fatty acids of M. ovum from all age-groups were 22:6(n-3), 20:5(n-3) and 16:0. Wax ester fatty alcohols were dominated by 22:1(n-11) and 20:1(n-9) followed by moderate proportions of 16:0. The unique feature of M. ovum lipids was the high amount of free fatty alcohols originating probably from the dietary wax esters. In May, free alcohols exhibited the highest mean proportion with 14.6% in age-group 0 animals. We present the first data describing a detailed free fatty alcohol composition in zooplankton. This composition was very different from the alcohol composition of M. ovum wax esters because of the predominance of the long-chain monounsaturated 22:1 (n-11) alcohol accounting for almost 100% of total free alcohols in some samples. The detailed lipid composition clearly reflected feeding of M. ovum on the herbivorous calanoid species, Calanus glacialis and C. finmarchicus, the abundant members of the zooplankton community in Kongsfjorden. Other copepod species or prey items seem to be less important for M. ovum.

The prosome length of copepods from each station was measured on board with a dissecting microscope equipped with an ocular micrometer. Individuals were placed in pre-weighed tin caps and dried for 48 h at 60°C on board. Dry samples were transferred to the AWI and weighed again. Copepod dry mass was then calculated as the difference between the empty weight and the weight of the tin cap containing one individual. The content of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) then was analysed with a CN-analyser (EuroEA Element Analyser, Hekatech) with acetanilide as standard.

The present study aimed to contribute to the knowledge on the intraspecific variations of enzyme activities in populations of Calanus finmarchicus from different longitudes across the North Atlantic Ocean and their relation to changing environmental conditions. C. finmarchicus was sampled across the North Atlantic in basins with decreasing temperature regimes from east to west (Iceland Basin, Irminger Basin and Labrador Basin) in late March/early April 2013. Potential maximum enzyme activities of digestive (proteinases and lipases/esterases) and metabolic (citrate synthase) enzymes of copepods from all sampling stations were analysed and thermal profiles (5-50°C) of enzyme activities were determined. In order to investigate its acclimation potential, C. finmarchicus were acclimated to 4°C and 15°C for two weeks and thermal profiles of enzyme activities were compared afterwards.

The activities of proteinases, lipases/esterases and citrate synthase of Calanus finmarchicus copepodites (CV) were analysed. Analysis was performed at 30°C for copepods from seven stations (126-9, 127-17, 131-17, 133-6, 134-19, 135-16, 136-8). In addition, thermal profiles (5-50°C) of these enzymes were analysed for copepods from 3 stations (127-17, 133-6, 135-16). C. finmarchicus of station 127-19 have been acclimated on board to two different temperatures (4 and 15°C) for two weeks. Thermal profiles (5-60°C) of lipases/esterases and proteinases of adult females from each treatment were analysed. Groups of 10 individuals were used to prepare enzyme extracts for analysis. From each station/treatment, three groups were analysed, each of which was measured in triplicates. The activity of proteinases was determined photometrically after Saborowski et al. (2004, hdl:10013/epic.20836), modified after Kreibich et al. (2008, doi:10.1007/s10152-008-0112-0). Azocasein was used as substrate. The lypolytic activity of lipases and esterases in the extract was analysed fluorometrically after Knotz et al. (2006, doi:10.1016/j.cbpa.2006.07.019) using 4-methylumbelliferyl butyrate as substrate. Citrate synthase activity was analysed photometrically after Stitt (1984) modified by Saborowski and Buchholz (2002) with oxaloacetic acid as substrate. As the world's oceans continue to absorb anthropogenic CO2 from the atmosphere, the carbonate chemistry of seawater will change. This process, termed ocean acidification, may affect the physiology of marine organisms. Arctic seas are expected to experience the greatest decreases in pH in the future, as changing sea ice dynamics and naturally cold, brackish water, will accelerate ocean acidification. In this study, we investigated the effect of increased pCO2 on the early developmental stages of the key Arctic copepod Calanus glacialis. Eggs from wild-caught C. glacialis females from Svalbard, Norway (80°N), were cultured for 2 months to copepodite stage C1 in 2°C seawater under four pCO2 treatments (320, 530, 800, and 1700 ?atm). Developmental rate, dry weight, and carbon and nitrogen mass were measured every other day throughout the experiment, and oxygen consumption rate was measured at stages N3, N6, and C1. All endpoints were unaffected by pCO2 levels projected for the year 2300. These results indicate that naupliar development in wild populations of C. glacialis is unlikely to be detrimentally affected in a future high CO2 ocean.

Daily ingestion rates of the pelagic hyperiid amphipod Themisto libellula were studied in the marginal ice zone of the Arctic Fram Strait by feeding experiments, respiration measurements and an allometric approach based on body mass. Amphipods were collected by stratified multiple opening/closing net hauls and Rectangular Midwater Trawl (RMT 8) in August 2000 during the expedition ARK XVI/2 of R/V "Polarstern". T. libellula occurred with abundances of 0.043 and 0.015 ind/m**3 in the upper 30 m of the water column at two RMT 8 stations. Based on respiration data, the daily ingestion necessary to cover metabolic energy demands measured 1.9±0.6% of body carbon per day. Actual prey consumption during feeding experiments with Calanus copepodids as prey was very similar and accounted for 1.9±1.5%/day, indicating that feeding on Calanus can meet the energy demands of T. libellula. In general, experimental results were slightly lower than the maximum potential ingestion (2%/day for an individual of median body dry mass of 32 mg) estimated by an allometric equation based on body mass, but feeding experiments showed a strong variability. Reduced metabolism and low ingestion rates of T. libellula are consistent with low ambient temperature, large body size, slow growth and long life span of this polar species. The effect of the active pelagic life style of T. libellula on metabolism and ingestion rate is discussed in comparison to the sympagic (i.e. ice-associated) amphipod Gammarus wilkitzkii of similar body size living in the same environment. In relation to the mesozooplankton biomass in the investigation area, the predation impact by T. libellula was low. However, high-Arctic conditions also limit the secondary production of principal prey species, such as Calanus glacialis and Calanus hyperboreus, so that even low predation rates may affect the growth of prey populations.
