The largest losses in mechanical harvesting of peanuts occur during the stage of digging, and its assessment is still incipient in Brazil. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the quantitative losses and the performance of the tractor-digger-inverter, according to soil water content and plant populations. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized block design with a factorial scheme 2 x 3, in which the treatments consisted of two soil, water content (19.3 and 24.8%) and three populations of plants (86,111, 127,603 and 141,144 plants ha-1), with four replications. The quantitative digging losses and the set mechanized performance were evaluated. The largest amount of visible and total losses was found in the population of 141.144 plants ha-1 for the 19.3% soil water content. The harvested material flow and the tractor-digger-inverter performance were not influenced by soil water content and plant population. The water content in the pods was higher in 24.8% soil water content only for the population of 86,111 plants ha-1; the yield was higher in the populations of 141.144 and 127.603 plants ha-1, in the 19.3 e 24.8% soil water content, respectively.

A high incidence of plants with mosaic, chlorotic spots, ringspots, necrosis, smaller leaves, and stunting was observed on peanut crops (Arachis hypogaea L.) in Itapolis, So Paulo State, Brazil. Transmission electron microscope examination of thin sections of infected leaves revealed the presence of spheroidal particles, ca. 80 nm in diameter, suggestive of Tospovirus. A DNA fragment of similar to 600 bp was amplified by RT-PCR from total RNA extracted from infected tissues using primers specific for the nucleocapsid gene of Groundnut ringspot virus (GRSV). Nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences of the fragments showed high identities with known GRSV isolates.

Peanut samples were irradiated (0.0, 5.2, 7.2 or 10.0 kGy), stored for a year (room temperature) and examined every three months. Mycotoxic fungi (MF) were detected in non-irradiated blanched peanuts. A dose of 5.2 kGy was found suitable to prevent MF growth in blanched samples. No MF was detected in in-shell peanuts, with or without irradiation. The colors of the control in-shell and blanched samples were, respectively, 44.72 and 60.21 (L *); 25.20 and 20.38 (Chroma); 53.05 and 86.46 (degrees Hue). The water activities (Aw) were 0.673 and 0.425. The corresponding fatty acids were 13.33% and 12.14% (C16:0), 44.94% and 44.92% (C18:1,omega 9) and 37.10% and 37.63% (C18: 2,omega 6). The total phenolics (TP) were 4.62 and 2.52 mg GAE/g, with antioxidant activities (AA) of 16.97 and 10.36 mu mol TEAC/g. Storage time negatively correlated with Aw (in-shell peanuts) or L *, linoleic acid, TP and AA (in-shell and blanched peanuts) but positively correlated with Aw (blanched peanuts), and with oleic acid (in-shell and blanched peanuts). Irradiation positively correlated with antioxidant activity (blanched peanuts). No correlation was found between irradiation and AA (in-shell samples) or fatty acids and TP (in-shell and blanched peanuts). Irradiation protected against MF and retained both the polyunsaturated fatty acids and polyphenols in the samples.

El maní (Arachis hypogaea L.) es un cultivo relevante en la provincia de Córdoba ya que el 80% de la producción nacional se concentra en la región centro-sur de la provincia. El desarrollo normal y la alta productividad del cultivo muchas veces se ven afectados o interrumpidos por condiciones ambientales desfavorables entre ellos, el estrés hídrico. La obtención de plantas con mayor tolerancia no sólo aseguraría la estabilidad de los rendimientos en años de déficit hídrico, sino que permitiría extender la frontera productiva a regiones marginales. Considerando que el estrés hídrico es uno de los factores que más afecta la productividad y calidad de los cultivos y por ser el maní un cultivo regional existe escaso conocimiento sobre los mecanismos fisiolgicos y moleculares involucrados en la estrategia de tolerancia a las condiciones ambientales adversas. El propósito del proyecto es contribuir al conocimiento del impacto del estrés hídrico y la rehidratación sobre plantas de maní dilucidando los mecanismos fisiolgicos y moleculares implicados en las estrategias de defensa de las plantas, con el fin de seleccionar aquellos cultivares mejores adaptados a las condiciones adversas. Para ello, la metodología empleada consistirá en evaluar el crecimiento, la fijación biolgica del nitrógeno y las estrategias de defensa antioxidante de cultivares de maní expuestos a estrés hídrico y posterior rehidratación.
