A transposase-independent mechanism gives rise to precise excision of IS256 from insertion sites in Staphylococcus epidermidis.

The mobile element IS256 causes phase variation of biofilm formation in Staphylococcus epidermidis by insertion and precise excision from the icaADBC operon. Precise excision, i.e., removal of the target site duplications (TSDs) and restoration of the original DNA sequence, occurs rarely but independently of functional transposase. Instead, the integrity of the TSDs is crucial for precise excision. Excision increased significantly when the TSDs were brought into closer spatial proximity, suggesting that excision is a host-driven process that might involve most likely illegitimate recombination.

Two-layer mm-wave FSS of linear slot elements with low insertion loss

The performance of a very low loss frequency selective surface (FSS) comprising two air spaced planar arrays of linear slot elements is reported. The beamsplitter generates a low loss passband response with a very sharp transmission roll-off with frequency. Simulated and measured results in the 30 GHz and 300 GHz wavebands are used to quantify the performance improvement compared to a conventional multilayer dielectrically backed conducting ring FSS. The paper also discusses the effect of the array dimensions on the passband width and filter roll-off rate.

Asymmetric rhodium carbene insertion into the Si-H bond: identification of new dirhodium(II) carboxylate catalysts using parallel synthesis techniques

Decomposition of methyl 2-diazophenylacetate in the presence of silanes and a chiral dirhodium(11) catalyst results in Si-H insertion of the intermediate carbenoid with varying degrees of enantioselectivity.
