Data compilation on the biological response to ocean acidification: environmental and experimental context of data sets and related literature

The exponential growth of studies on the biological response to ocean acidification over the last few decades has generated a large amount of data. To facilitate data comparison, a data compilation hosted at the data publisher PANGAEA was initiated in 2008 and is updated on a regular basis (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.149999). By January 2015, a total of 581 data sets (over 4 000 000 data points) from 539 papers had been archived. Here we present the developments of this data compilation five years since its first description by Nisumaa et al. (2010). Most of study sites from which data archived are still in the Northern Hemisphere and the number of archived data from studies from the Southern Hemisphere and polar oceans are still relatively low. Data from 60 studies that investigated the response of a mix of organisms or natural communities were all added after 2010, indicating a welcomed shift from the study of individual organisms to communities and ecosystems. The initial imbalance of considerably more data archived on calcification and primary production than on other processes has improved. There is also a clear tendency towards more data archived from multifactorial studies after 2010. For easier and more effective access to ocean acidification data, the ocean acidification community is strongly encouraged to contribute to the data archiving effort, and help develop standard vocabularies describing the variables and define best practices for archiving ocean acidification data.

Evaluation du stock de coquilles Saint-Jacques de la Baie de Seine et du Proche Extérieur. COMOR 32 (8-23 juillet 2002)

Scientific scallop surveys called COMOR are carried out in the bay of Seine since 1976. Results are used by fishermen’ associations and by fishing administration to lead management measures. In this report, the scientific results of the survey COMOR 32 realised in July 2002 are described. Abundance and growth indices for scallop, by age and area, are presented. During these surveys, data about most abundant benthic species are also collected since 1998. A first assessment with five years data is made here. A global descriptive analysis is undertaken about all the species present on scallops grounds. A special zoom is applied on both species whitch could be exploited (whelk Buccinum undatum and queen scallop Aequipecten opercularis) and three competitive species (starfish Asterias rubens, American slipper-limpet Crepidula fornicata and brittle star Ophiothrix fragilis)

O Fantástico na Prosa Contemporânea o duplo como jogo ficcional em Rubens Figueiredo

Observamos a questão do duplo na ficção de Rubens Figueiredo e como ele contribui a produção do fantástico na contemporaneidade. Para isso, primeiro, apresentamos a análise de Tzevan Todorov sobre o gênero fantástico, no qual destacamos a multiplicação da personalidade e a ambiguidade na narrativa; e segundo, tratamos, de forma breve, as concepções do duplo na história da literatura, no ensaio filosófico de Clément Rosset e a partir do unheimlich de Freud. Adicionalmente utilizamos teóricos como Filipe Furtado, Jean-Paul Sarte, Otto Rank, Remo Ceserani, entre outros. Por fim, analisamos como o duplo aparece no fantástico atual, a partir das narrativas curtas Nos olhos do intruso, Um certo tom de preto, Sem os outros, A ele chamarei Morzek e do romance Barco a seco, de Rubens Figueiredo. O autor em sua construção ficcional parece mesclar elementos do fantástico clássico com o fantástico moderno e, em suas narrativas é possível notar a presença obsessiva do tema do duplo, o insólito, a ambiguidade, e questões da atualidade que dizem respeito à condição humana

Fingidores em cena: a metaficção em Sérgio SantAnna e Rubens Figueiredo

A partir de uma proposta de ampliação do conceito de metaficção, a tese tem como objetivo investigar os usos metaficcionais nas obras de dois autores da literatura brasileira contemporânea: Sérgio SantAnna e Rubens Figueiredo. No caso de Sérgio SantAnna, são investigadas as relações que a metaficção estabelece com o controle do imaginário, com a reflexão estética feita no interior dos textos ficcionais e com a polêmica em torno das vanguardas. No caso de Rubens Figueiredo, a discussão sobre o uso do discurso metaficcional levará em conta os três ciclos pelos quais passa a obra do autor, ciclos esses marcados pela ênfase em determinadas questões, tais como a parodização de romances policiais, a questão da identidade e a problemática do social. O olhar panorâmico lançado para a obra ficcional dos dois autores deverá mostrar como os diferentes usos metaficcionais − ao atribuírem valores diferenciados à ligação que a literatura tem com o chamado mundo real − sinalizam duas concepções quase antagônicas do fenômeno literário

A Decline in Starfish, Asterias forbesi, Abundance and a Concurrent Increase in Northern Quahog, Mercenaria mercenaria, Abundance and Landings in the Northeastern United States

The abundance of the common starfish, Asterias forbesi, fluctuates widely over time. The starfish is a predator of pre-recruit northern quahogs, Mercenaria mercenaria. During the 1990’s, starfish became scarce in Raritan Bay and Long Island Sound. Quahog populations concurrently erupted in abundance and quahog landings have risen sharply in both locations. The extensive scale of this observation would seem to imply a cause and effect; at the least, both populations may be responding differently to a large scale exogenous factor.

Experimental studies on the effects of toxic Microcystis aeruginosa PCC7820 on the survival and reproduction of two freshwater rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus and Brachionus rubens

Blooms of Microcystis aeruginosa frequently occur in many eutrophic lakes in China, however, there is very little experimental study on the relationship between Microcystis and rotifers from Chinese waters. The effects of different concentrations of toxic M. aeruginosa PCC7820 on two common freshwater rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus and B. rubens were investigated in laboratory experiments. B. calyciflorus was able to utilize this strain of M. aeruginosa as a food source. However, M. aeruginosa suppressed the survival and reproduction of B. calyciflorus at the highest concentration (10(6) cells/ml) probably due to the inadequate nutrition. B. rubens was inhibited by toxic M. aeruginosa PCC7820 and the inhibition increased with the increasing Microcystis concentration. Our study indicates that the two rotifers have different sensitivities to toxic M. aeruginosa and that toxic cyanobacteria may affect zooplankton community structure by differentially inhibiting the different zooplankton taxa.
