Fire, climate, and vegetation: the sedimentary record of fire in montane meadows, Sierra Nevada, California, USA [abstract]

We are investigating this relationship in a major mountain range in California, examining charcoal and pollen content in sediments of montane meadows to compare paleo-fire and paleo-vegetation (thus, climate) sequences for the Holocene.

On the strength of the California Current: a record from the southern Baja California margin [abstract]

High-resolution record of climate change in the Owens Lake Basin, California, for the period 52,500 to 12,500 YBP

EXTRACT (SEE PDF FOR FULL ABSTRACT): High-resolution oxygen-18 and total inorganic carbon (TIC) studies of cored sediments from the Owens Lake Basin, California, indicate that Owens Lake was hydrologically open (overflowing) most of the time between 52,500 and 12,500 carbon-14 YBP. ... The lack of a strong correspondence between North Atlantic climate records and the Owens Lake delta-oxygen-18 record has two possible explanations: (1) the sequence of large and abrupt climate change indicated in North Atlantic records is not global in scope and is largely confined to the North Atlantic and surrounding areas, or (2) Owens Lake is located in a part of the Great Basin that is relatively insensitive to the effects of climate perturbations recorded in the North Atlantic region.

A late Pleistocene paleohydrologic record of Sierra Nevada runoff from Owens Lake, California [abstract]

Throughout most of its history, Owens Lake was characterized by freshwater diatoms, indicating a positive hydrologic input from the Owens River and overflow to lake systems downstream.

A detailed 2,000-year late-Holocene pollen record from Lower Pahranagat Lake, southern Nevada, USA [abstract]

EXTRACT (SEE PDF FOR FULL ABSTRACT): Preliminary analysis of 128 pollen samples and 7 radiocarbon dates from a 5-meter-long, 10-centimeter-diameter sediment core retrieved from Lower Pahranagat Lake (elevation 975 meters), Lincoln County, Nevada, gives us a rare, continuous record of vegetation change at 14-year intervals over the past 2,000 years.

Multiple-proxy lacustrine record of moisture transport over western North America from 24,000 to 12,000 YBP, Lake Estancia, New Mexico [abstract]

EXTRACT (SEE PDF FOR FULL ABSTRACT): Pluvial Lake Estancia in central New Mexico experienced large and rapid fluctuations in surface area and elevation during the build-up to and termination of the last glacial maximum (LGM). Due to continuous groundwater discharge, a minimum pool covering about 400 square kilometers was maintained in the central basin until about 12,000 years ago, ensuring a continuous depositional sequence even during low stands of the lake. ... The sensitive response to fluctuations in climate by several independent proxies at Estancia show that transport of Pacific moisture over western North America changed dramatically during the last Ice Age, perhaps comparable to the large and rapid changes in climate documented from high-latitude ice and North Atlantic marine sediments for the LCM and its transitions.

A rock-magnetic and geomagnetic secular variation record from late-Pleistocene Lake Estancia, New Mexico [abstract]

A detailed rock-magnetic study is being performed on this well-dated, well-preserved sedimentary sequence to determine how the magnetic signature of sediments responded to regional climate change.

A late-Holocene pollen record from Lower Pahrangat Lake, southern Nevada, USA: high resolution paleoclimatic records and analysis of environmental responses to climate change

EXTRACT (SEE PDF FOR FULL ABSTRACT): High resolution paleobotanical records provide sufficient detail to correlate events regionally. Once correlated events can be examined in tandem to determine the underlying inputs that fashioned them. Several localities in the Great Basin have paleobotanical records of sufficient detail to generate regional reconstructions of vegetation changes for the last 2 ka and provide conclusions as to the climates that caused them.

Record catch of rock perch, Epinephelus fasciatus by bottom trawling off Ratnagiri

A productive fishing ground for rock perch (Epinephelus fasciatus) was located off Ratnagiri between 17 degree 00' to 17 degree 10' N latitude and 72 degree 20' to 72 degree 30' E longitude, around a depth of 96m during November, 1983. An average catch of 2 ton/hr. was recorded. Length frequency studies of E. fasciatus indicate the probability of a nursery ground consisting of three brood stocks. Hydrographic studies of the ground revealed that the bottom water was oxygen deficient below a strong thermocline extending from 15-75 m depth with the recorded bottom temperature amounting to 20.5 degree C.

A new distributional record of Zozymodes cavipes (Dana, 1852) (Crustacea; Decapoda) from the coastal waters of Pakistan

One male and one female of Zozymodes cavipes (Dana, 1852) have revently been collected from the rocky shores near Karachi; the species is widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific region. It is, however, being reported for the first time from the pakistani coast of the northern Arabian Sea and thus fills the gap in the known distribution of the species. The pakistani material is housed in the Marine Reference Collection Centre, University of Karachi. The specimens are briefly descibed below. Only restricted synonym is given.

An Indian Ocean record for a porcellanid crab, Raphidopus ciliatus Stimpson, 1958

Several specimens of a porcellanid crab Raphidopus ciliatus are being reported for the first time from the northern Arabian Sea, extending the range of the species into the Indian Ocean. Specimens were found in by-catches landing at fish harbour, four specimens were recovered from stomachs of noncommercial fish, Batrachus grunniens. Salient features of the species are described. Individual variations specially noted.

A northern Indian Ocean record of a bopyrid, Parapenaeon japonica (Thielemann, 1910) parasitic on species of penaeid prawns (Penaeus)

A female of Penaeus merguiensis de Man collected from Karachi fish harbour (8 May, 1993) was with a large specimen of bopyrid in its right gill chamber. Since this was the second record (see Tirmizi and Bashir, 1973) of a bopyrid from a species other than Parapenauopsis stylifera H. Milne-Edwards the specimen was examined out of curiosity.

A new record of two penaeid species from Goa coast

Adults of Penaeus japonicus (Bate) and juveniles of P. canaliculatus (Olivier) were recorded for the first time from the coastal and estuarine regions of Goa respectively. Their presence in Goa waters suggests that both the species have a wide distribution along the west coast of India. The available data from the neighboring states suggest that both the species are distributed in deeper waters and are caught during or immediately after the southwest monsoon. Hence, it may be possible to tap these valuable resources from Goa waters if the fishing operation is extended to depths beyond those presently fished and fishing is carried out during the SW monsoon season.

A new species and a new record of Sphaeromopsis Holdich and Jones, 1973 from Pakistan waters (Isopoda, Sphaeromatidae)

Sphaeromopsis minutus, sp. nov., the sixth species of Splitteromopsis Holdich and Jones is described and figured in detail. The genus Sphaeromopsis and species S. serriguberna Holdich and Harrison, 1981 is recorded for the first time from northern Arabian Sea, Karachi (Pakistan).

A new species of Cyphocarcinus and a new record of Macropodia formosa Rathbun (Crustacea, Decapoda, Majidae) from Pakistan

The present paper includes a new species and a new record of majid crabs. The new species is referable to the genus Cyphocarcinus, subfamily Mithracinae of which only the genus Micippa was known from the region. Macropodia formosa Rathbun is being recorded for the first time from Karachi and belongs to the subfamily Inachinae. Both the species are described and illustrated. The new species is compared with its allied species.
