Several methods were developed for converting isodigitoxigenin (2a) into methyl acetals 4b and 4c. Of these, methanolysis (followed by acetylation) of isodigitoxigenin in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid proved most useful. Each isomer reached an equilibrium corresponding to ca. 3:1 acetal 4c to 4b within 15 min in benzene containing p-toluenesulfonic acid. Addition of dihydropyran to the equilibrium mixture resulted in excellent conversion into vinyl ether 5a. Heating either acetal 4b or 4c in benzene containing p-toluenesulfonic acid led to a skeletal rearrangement culminating in formation of C-norcardenolide 6. In addition to results of physical measurements, the structure of spiran 6 was confirmed by degradation to methyl ketone 8. Similar rearrangement of isodigitoxigenin gave spiran 9 accompanied by C-norcardenolide 6. Treating lactone 9 with p-toluenesulfonic acid in methanol-water provided acetals 10a and 10b, which on further contact with p-toluenesulfonic acid in refluxing benzene gave lactone 9 and cardenolide 6. Evidence underlying the stereochemical assignments noted for structures 4, 9, and 10 was also discussed.

Synthesis, aggregation behavior and cholesterol solubilization studies of 16-epi-pythocholic acid (3 alpha,12 alpha,16 beta-trihydroxy-5 beta-cholan-24-oic acid)

Synthesis, aggregation behavior and in vitro cholesterol solubilization studies of 16-epi-pythocholic acid (3 alpha,12 alpha,16 beta-trihydroxy-5 beta-cholan-24-oic acid, EPCA) are reported. The synthesis of this unnatural epimer of pythocholic acid (3 alpha,12 alpha,16 alpha-trihydroxy-5 beta-cholan-24-oic acid, PCA) involves a series of simple and selective chemical transformations with an overall yield of 21% starting from readily available cholic acid (CA). The critical micellar concentration (CMC) of 16-epi-pythocholate in aqueous media was determined using pyrene as a fluorescent probe. In vitro cholesterol solubilization ability was evaluated using anhydrous cholesterol and results were compared with those of other natural di-and trihydroxy bile acids. These studies showed that 16-epi-pythocholic acid (16 beta-hydroxy-deoxycholic acid) behaves similar to cholic acid (CA) and avicholic acid (3 alpha,7 alpha,16 alpha-trihydroxy-5 beta-cholan-24-oic acid, ACA) in its aggregation behavior and cholesterol dissolution properties. Elimination of common mode voltage and fifth and seventh harmonics in a multilevel inverter fed IM drive using 12-sided polygonal voltage spacephasor

A multilevel inverter with 12-sided polygonal voltage space vector structure is proposed in this paper. The present scheme provides elimination of common mode voltage variation and 5(th) and 7(th) order harmonics in the entire operating range of the drive. The proposed multi level structure is achieved by cascading only the conventional two-level inverters with asymmetrical DC link voltages. The bandwidths problems associated with conventional hexagonal voltage space vector structure current controllers, due to the presence of 5(th) and 7(th) harmonics, in the over modulation region, is absent in the present 12-sided structure. So a linear voltage control up to 12-step operation is possible, from the present twelve sided scheme, with less current control complexity. An open-end winding structure is used for the induction motor drive.

Non-periodic tilings in 2-dimensions with 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12-fold symmetries

The two dimensional plane can be filled with rhombuses, so as to generate non-periodic tilings with 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12-fold symmetries. Some representative tilings constructed using the rule of inflation are shown. The numerically computed diffraction patterns for the corresponding tilings are also shown to facilitate a comparison with possible X-ray or electron diffraction pictures.

Thermal decomposition studies on copolyurethanes based on hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene and poly(12-hydroxy stearic acid-co-TMP) ester polyol

Thermal degradation of copolyurethanes based on hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) and poly(12-hydroxy stearic acid-co-TMP) ester polyol (PEP) with varying compositions has been studied by thermo-gravimetric and pyrolysis-GC techniques. The copolyurethanes were found to decompose in multiple stages and the kinetic parameters were found to be dependent on the method of their evaluation. The activation energy for the initial stage of decomposition was found to increase, and for the main stage decreases with the increase in PEP content. The pyrolysis-GC studies on the ammonium perchlorate filled copolyurethanes (solid propellants) showed that the major products during the pyrolysis were C-2, C-3 hydrocarbons and butadiene. The amount of C-2 fraction in the pyrolyslate increased with solid loading, as well as with the HTPB content in the copolyurethanes. A linear relationship apparently exists between the amount of C-2 fraction and the burn rates of the solid propellants. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of the polyoxovanadate cluster Zn-2(NH2(CH2)(2)NH2)(5)]{Zn(NH2(CH2)(2)NH2)(2)}(2){V18O42(H2O)\ ]center dot xH(2)O (x similar to 12), possessing a layered structure

A hydrothermal reaction of a mixture of ZnCl2, V2O5, ethylenediamine and water gave rise to a layered poly oxovanadate material. clusters. These clusters, with all the vanadium ions in the +4 state, are connected together through Zn(NH2(CH2)(2)NH2)(2) linkers forming a two-dimensional structure. The layers are also separated by distorted trigonal bipyramidal [Zn-2(NH2(CH2)(2)NH2)(5)] complexes. The Structure, thus, presents a dual role for the Zn-ethylenediamine complex. The magnetic susceptibility studies indicate that the interactions between the V centres in I are predominantly antiferromagnetic in nature and the compound shows highly frustrated behaviour. The magnetic properties are compared to the theoretical calculations based oil the Heisenberg model, in addition to correlating to the structure. Crystal data for the complexes are presented.
