A study was carried out to determine whether spirochaetes are frequently associated with digital dermatitis in United Kingdom (UK) dairy cattle. Histopathological examination of lesions using a silver stain showed a large number of unidentified spirochaete-like organisms present in digital dermatitis hoof skin tissue in all examined biopsies. Immunocytochemical staining demonstrated that spirochaetes in skin lesions were identified by polyclonal antisera to Borrelia burgdorferi, Treponema denticola and Treponema vincentii (again all biopsies were positively stained), whereas monoclonal antibodies to B. burgdorferi and any Treponema pallidum did not stain any organisms in all biopsies. A PCR of 16S rRNA, previously shown to be specific for a new treponeme, was employed and produced positive results from 82.4% of digital dermatitis tissues. It is concluded that this spirochaete (or related spirochaetes), which is similar to human oral treponemes, is frequently associated with, and may be responsible for, pathological changes in digital dermatitis. The impact of ceiling geometries on the performance of lightshelves was investigated using physical model experiments and radiance simulations. Illuminance level and distribution uniformity were assessed for a working plane in a large space located in sub-tropical climate regions where innovative systems for daylighting and shading are required. It was found that the performance of the lightshelf can be improved by changing the ceiling geometry; the illuminance level increased in the rear of the room and decreased in the front near the window compared to rooms having conventional horizontal ceilings. Moreover, greater uniformity was achieved throughout the room as a result of reducing the difference in the illuminance level between the front and rear of the room. Radiance simulation results were found to be in good agreement with physical model data obtained under a clear sky and high solar radiation. The best ceiling shape was found to be one that is curved in the front and rear of the room.

p-(Dimethylamino)phenyl pentazole, DMAP-N5 (DMAP = Me2N−C6H4), was characterized by picosecond transient infrared spectroscopy and infrared spectroelectrochemistry. Femtosecond laser excitation at 310 or 330 nm produces the DMAP-N5 (S1) excited state, part of which returns to the ground state (τ = 82 ± 4 ps), while DMAP-N and DMAP-N3 (S0) are generated as double and single N2-loss photoproducts with η ≈ 0.14. The lifetime of DMAP-N5 (S1) is temperature and solvent dependent. [DMAP-N3]+ is produced from DMAP-N5 in a quasireversible, one-electron oxidation process (E1/2 = +0.67 V). Control experiments with DMAP-N3 support the findings. DFT B3LYP/6-311G** calculations were used to identify DMAP-N5 (S1), DMAP-N3 +, and DMAP-N in the infrared spectra. Both DMAP-N5 (S1) and [DMAP-N5]+ have a weakened N5 ring structure.

The influence of thyroid hormone on estrogen actions has been demonstrated both in vivo and in vitro. In transient transfection assays, the effects of liganded thyroid hormone receptors (TR) on transcriptional facilitation by estrogens bound to estrogen receptors (ER) display specificity according to the following: 1) ER isoform, 2) TR isoform, 3) the promoter through which transcriptional facilitation occurs, and 4) cell type. Some of these molecular phenomena may be related to thyroid hormone signaling of seasonal limitations upon reproduction. The various combinations of these molecular interactions provide multiple and flexible opportunities for relations between two major hormonal systems important for neuroendocrine feedbacks and reproductive behaviors.

The aim of this study was to evaluate Ki-67 and Bcl-2 protein expression in the normal colorectal mucosa adjacent to adenomatous polyps in women with breast cancer. A cross-sectional, controlled study was conducted in 35 women with and without breast cancer who had adenomatous colorectal polyps. The patients were divided into two groups: Group A (a control group of women without breast cancer, n = 18) and Group B (a study group of women with breast cancer, n = 17). A sample of normal colonic mucosa was collected at a distance of 5 cm from the polypoid lesion to evaluate immunchistochemical expression of the Ki-67 and Bcl-2 proteins. Student`s t-test and the chi-square test were used to analyse Ki-67 and Bcl-2 expression, respectively. Statistical significance was established at p < 0.05. The mean percentage of Ki-67-stained nuclei in Groups A and B was 25.12 +/- 2.08 and 41.50 +/- 1.85, respectively (p < 0.001), whereas the percentage of cases with cells expressing Bcl-2 in Groups A and B was 17.6% and 82.4%, respectively (p < 0.003). In the present study, greater proliferative activity and greater expression of the antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2 was found in the normal colorectal mucosa of women with breast cancer. PURPOSE: To evaluate the capacity of clofazimine (CFZ) to control cutaneous activity of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), compared with chloroquine diphosphate (CDP). METHODS: A prospective, randomized, controlled, double blind clinical trial was carried out in thirty-three patients with SLE and cutaneous lesions (malar rash and/or discoid lupus and/or subacute cutaneous lupus), after approval by the respective Ethics Committee. Sixteen patients received clofazimine - 100mg/day (CFZ group) and 17 received chloroquine diphosphate - 250mg/day (CDP group), during six months. Both groups applied broad-spectrum sunscreens twice a day. The dose of prednisone was kept stable during the study. Cutaneous lesions were evaluated by 2 blinded observers and photographed at baseline and at months 1, 2, 4 and 6. RESULTS: Thirty-three patients began and 27 completed the 6 months of treatment. The groups were homogeneous and comparable in terms of demographic and clinical characteristics. Five CFZ-patients and one CDP-patients dropped out due to severe flare of disease requiring other treatment. At the end of the study, 12 CFZ-patients (75%) and 14 CDP-patients (82,4%) presented complete or near-complete remission of skin lesions; intention-to-treat analysis showed no significant difference in the response rates between groups. Side effects in both groups were frequent, but patients didn t have to discontinue the drugs. CONCLUSIONS: Clofazimine and chloroquine were effective in controlling cutaneous lesions in SLE patients

Descriptive exploratory study, prospective with quantitative approach, performed on the Medical Regulation Central of SAMU/Natal, aiming to identify the level of professional satisfaction of the members of the nursing team working at SAMU/Natal; and verify the degree of importance attributed by the professionals to each of the components Professional Satisfaction: autonomy, interaction, professional status , work requirements, organizational rules and remuneration. The population was of 60 professionals, with data collected from january to february 2005. We used an instrument translated and validated by Lino (1999) to the portuguese language, the Professional Satisfaction Rate (PSR). The results demonstrate that there was a slight predominance of the female gender (54,9%); aged between 36 and 45 years old (60,8%); married (58,8%), 82,4% with children, 30,8% aged between 05 and 09. Regarding formation, we observed that 78,4% were nursing technicians and 21,6% nurses, formed for 11 to 15 years (17,5%). From the 11 nurses, 09 (81,8%) informed they have specialization, 29,4% of the team has been working for 11 to 15 years on the urgency area, 58.8% works for more than 02 years on SAMU, 72,6% of the team members have fixed work schedules. There was homogeneity on the work shifts: 41,2% on the day shift and 53% on the night shift. Regarding the reason to be working on SAMU, 64% chose to work in the service, and among these 76,3% predominantly perform direct care to the patients, 96,1% like and are satisfied to work in the service. Regarding the remuneration, 90,9% informed they receive 05 to 10 minimum wages; 70% of the technicians informed they receive -2 to 05 minumum wages, 50,1% informed they receive no additional benefit. The analysis of PSR through Cronbach s Alpha Coeficient resulted on the value of 0,94 and through Kendall s Tau Coeficient on 0,87, demonstrating to be a trustworthy instrument to measure the level of professional satisfaction of the SAMU nursing team, in our environment. As for the level of importance attributed to the components of professional satisfaction, we indentified that the nursing team considered the Autonomy component as the most important, followed by the component Remuneration, Interaction, Work Requirements, Work Requirements, Organizational Rules and Professional Status . Regarding the current level of professional satisfaction, we identified they were most satisfied with the Professional Status , Autonomy, Interaction, Remuneration, Work Requirements and Organizational Rules. The real professional satisfaction level, calculated through statistics, however, tells these professionals are more satisfied with Autonomy, Remuneration, Interaction, Work Requirements, professional Status and Organizational Rules. The PSR in our work was of 8,6, indicating the SAMU Natal nursing team has little satisfaction on their work environment

The Curimataú estuary is located in the oriental coast of Rio Grande do Norte State in Brazil. Its importance resides in the fact that this region possesses one of the last portions of preserved mangrove in the Rio Grande do Norte State. Nevertheless, it has been severely affected by many anthropogenic activities, as sugarcane monoculture and shrimp farming. Former works demonstrated that an accumulation of heavy metals is occurring in oysters in this estuary, and perhaps it could be explained by the input of metals in this ecosystem deriving from the shrimp farming. To better understanding the origin of these metals, bottom sediment samples, cores and suspended particulate matter were collected for a characterization of metal concentrations (Al, Ba, Cd, Cu, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) and to determine the potentially bioavailable metals. Additionally, the enrichment ratio for each element analyzed was calculated. The mineralogical composition of sediment samples and cores were obtained by X-ray diffraction. Moreover, data of orbital remote sensing were used in order to detect and quantify suspended matter by applying a logarithmic algorithm. Geochemical data of bottom sediments and cores revealed that, excepting Ba and Pb, the elements analyzed presented concentrations characteristic of an unpolluted ecosystem (Al: 0,25 - 8,76 %; Ba: 3,03 - 870 µg.g-1; Cd: < 0,25 µg.g-1; Cr: 1,72 - 82,4 µg.g-1; Cu: 0,12 -25,3 µg.g-1; Pb: 0,38 - 23,7 µg.g-1; Fe: 0,10 - 5,82 %; Mn: 15,1 - 815 µg.g-1; Ni: 0,14 - 36,1 µg.g-1; Zn: 1,37 - 113 µg.g-1). During the dry season a distribution pattern was observed, with higher metal concentrations in the margins, decreasing toward the central portion of the channel. These metal concentrations were well correlated with mineralogical compositions, with clay minerals prevailing at the margins, and quartz and feldspar in the center. However, this pattern was not observed during the wet season, probably because of the high water flux that disturbed bottom sediments. But, as observed for the dry season, a good correlation between metal concentrations and mineralogical composition was also observed for the wet season, with high metal concentrations where there were high quantities of clay minerals. Low enrichment ratios were obtained for the majority of elements analyzed, excepting for Mn, Ba and Pb. Manganese presented the higher ratios downstream for both seasons, and it can be an evidence of anthropogenic impact by shrimp farming. As barium and lead concentrations in sediment samples presented analytical problems during the total sample digestion, one cannot be sure that the ratios obtained correspond to the reality. The highest metal concentrations in particulate matter were obtained in the portion dominated by fluvial transport for all metals analyzed, excepting for copper. Barium and zinc were the only elements that presented elevated concentrations that are not common of unpolluted ecosystems (Ba: 5730 - 8355 µg.g-1; Zn: 3899 - 4348 µg.g-1). However, these high concentrations could not be related to the shrimp farming and waste waters from the town of Canguaretama, once they were obtained from the fluvial particulate matter, that is upstream from the activities above mentioned. The application of the logarithmic algorithm to the processed LANDSAT image was well succeeded, although the acquired image does not correspond exactly to the field campaigns. The IKONOS image provided very detailed views of the suspended sediment concentration at the estuary, as the mixture of distinct water flows at the confluence of Cunhaú and Curimataú rivers, with more turbid waters from Cunhaú river, that is directly affected by effluents from shrimp farming and urban waste waters deriving from the town of Canguaretama
