Pangasianodon hypophthalmus is a commercially important freshwater fish used in inland aquaculture in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The current study using Ion Torrent technology generated EST resources from the kidney for Tra catfish reared at a salinity level of 9 ppt. We obtained 2,623,929 reads after trimming and processing with an average length of 104 bp. De novo assemblies were generated using CLC Genomic Workbench, Trinity and Velvet/Oases with the best overall contig performance resulting from the CLC assembly. De novo assembly using CLC yielded 29,940 contigs, and allowing identification of 5,710 putative genes when comppared with NCBI non-redundant database. A large number of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were also detected. The sequence collection generated in our study represents the most comprehensive transcriptomic resource for P. hypophthalmus available to date.

Background The leading causes of morbidity and mortality for people in high-income countries living with HIV are now non-AIDS malignancies, cardiovascular disease and other non-communicable diseases associated with ageing. This protocol describes the trial of HealthMap, a model of care for people with HIV (PWHIV) that includes use of an interactive shared health record and self-management support. The aims of the HealthMap trial are to evaluate engagement of PWHIV and healthcare providers with the model, and its effectiveness for reducing coronary heart disease risk, enhancing self-management, and improving mental health and quality of life of PWHIV. Methods/Design The study is a two-arm cluster randomised trial involving HIV clinical sites in several states in Australia. Doctors will be randomised to the HealthMap model (immediate arm) or to proceed with usual care (deferred arm). People with HIV whose doctors are randomised to the immediate arm receive 1) new opportunities to discuss their health status and goals with their HIV doctor using a HealthMap shared health record; 2) access to their own health record from home; 3) access to health coaching delivered by telephone and online; and 4) access to a peer moderated online group chat programme. Data will be collected from participating PWHIV (n = 710) at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months and from participating doctors (n = 60) at baseline and 12 months. The control arm will be offered the HealthMap intervention at the end of the trial. The primary study outcomes, measured at 12 months, are 1) 10-year risk of non-fatal acute myocardial infarction or coronary heart disease death as estimated by a Framingham Heart Study risk equation; and 2) Positive and Active Engagement in Life Scale from the Health Education Impact Questionnaire (heiQ). Discussion The study will determine the viability and utility of a novel technology-supported model of care for maintaining the health and wellbeing of people with HIV. If shown to be effective, the HealthMap model may provide a generalisable, scalable and sustainable system for supporting the care needs of people with HIV, addressing issues of equity of access. The pH and salinity balance mechanisms of crayfish are controlled by a set of transport-related genes. We identified a set of the genes from the gill transcriptome from a freshwater crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus using the Illumina NGS-sequencing technology. We identified and characterized carbonic anhydrase (CA) genes and some other key genes involved in systematic acid-base balance and osmotic/ionic regulation. We also examined expression patterns of some of these genes across different sublethal pH levels [1]. A total of 72,382,710 paired-end Illumina reads were assembled into 36,128 contigs with an average length of 800 bp. About 37% of the contigs received significant BLAST hits and 22% were assigned gene ontology terms. These data will assist in further physiological-genomic studies in crayfish.

Glycoprotein isolated from sheep plasma was chemically modified, and the effect of chemical modification on biological activities and immunological cross reactions has been studied. The removal of sialic acid resulted in a change in the “overall conformation” of the glycoprotein as evidenced by a decrease in viscosity of the glycoprotein solution and an increased susceptibility of the glycoprotein to proteolytic enzymes. Sialic acid-free glycoprotein no longer inhibited the tryptic activity or prolonged the clotting time of plasma. However, it could react with the antiserum to sheep plasma glycoprotein. The periodate oxidation of sheep plasma glycoprotein resulted in a complete loss of inhibition of trypsin activity, prolongation of plasma clotting time, and the ability to cross-react with the rabbit antiserum. The significance of periodate oxidation in relation to the possible sequence of sugars in the carbohydrate prosthetic group in the glycoprotein is discussed. Iodination and heating in buffers of acid and alkaline pH values of sheep plasma glycoprotein resulted in complete loss of trypsin activity and ability to prolong plasma clotting time. Iodination of the glycoprotein did not affect the immunological cross-reactivity.

A study of the gap breakdown voltage characteristic at a low pressure of 7×10-5 Torr with a standard (1/50)-μsec impulse-voltage wave reveals an agreement with the criterion Vb=Cd0.5 suggested by Cranberg. Voltage-time-to-breakdown characteristics has also been determined. From these studies, it is concluded that impulse breakdown in vacuum is initiated by an electron current heating an anode spot and thereby liberating a clump which causes breakdown.

The study contributes to our understanding of the forces that drive the stock market by investigating how different types of investors react to new financial statement information. Using the extremely comprehensive official register of share holdings in Finland, we find that the majority of investors are more probable to sell (buy) stocks in a company after a positive (negative) earnings surprise, and show a bias towards buying after the disclosure of new financial statement information. Large investors, on the other hand, show behavior opposite to that of the majority of investors in the market. Further, foreign investors show behavior similar to that of domestic investors. We suggest investor overconfidence and asymmetric information as possible explanations for the documented behavior.

Circular dichroism studies have revealed that addition of testis specific protein, TP in vitro, to rat testes nucleosome core particle resulted in a decrease in the compaction of the core particle DNA. This was also corroborated by thermal denaturation analysis. Addition of TP to nucleosome core particle resulted in the conversion of a biphasic transition towards a single phase. However, at the same time there was a 20% reduction in the overall hyperchromicity of core particle DNA at core particle to TP molar ratios of 1:2 and 1:3. These observations along with our earlier report, showing the DNA melting properties of TP, suggest that TP may play an important role in the disassembly process of nucleosome core particle during spermiogenesis.

Oxovanadium(IV) complexes VO(N-N-N)(N-N)](NO3)(2) (1-4) of (4'-phenyl)-2,2': 6',2 `'-terpyridine (ph-tpy in 1 and 2) or (4'-pyrenyl)-2,2':6',2 `'-terpyridine (py-tpy in 3 and 4) having N-N as 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1 and 3) or dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 2 and 4) are prepared and characterized. The crystal structure of 1 has VO2+ group in VN5O coordination geometry. The terpyridine ligand coordinates in a meridional binding mode. The phen ligand displays a chelating mode of binding with an N-donor site trans to the vanadyl oxo group. The complexes show a d-d band in the range of 710-770 nm in aqueous DMF (4:1 v/v). The complexes exhibit an irreversible V-IV/V-III redox response near -1.0 V vs. SCE in aqueous DMF/0.1 M KCl. The complexes bind to CT DNA giving K-b values within 3.5 x 10(5) to 1.2 x 10(6) M-1. The complexes show poor chemical nuclease activity in dark. Complexes 2-4 show photonuclease activity in UV-A light of 365 nm forming O-1(2) and (OH)-O-center dot. Complex 4 shows DNA photocleavage activity at near-IR light of 785 nm forming (OH)-O-center dot radicals. Complexes 2 and 4 show significant photocytotoxicity in HeLa cancer cells. Uptake of the complexes in HeLa cells, studied by fluorescence imaging, show predominantly cytosolic localization inside the cells.

The reactivation kinetics of passivated Mg acceptors in hydrogenated InP during unbiased annealing of a Schottky diode is reported. The reactivation is found to slow down gradually with annealing time and this phenomenon is attributed to substantial retrapping of H at the acceptor sites. It is found from the concentration profiles and the kinetics data that the reactivation is most likely limited by H2 molecule formation processes for longer annealing times; for shorter annealing times, contributions from in-diffusion of H also become significant. The diffusion of H during the initial period follows an Arrhenius relation with an activation energy for the effective diffusion coefficient of 1.13±0.10 eV. In the H2 formation regime, the reactivation is thermally activated with an activation energy for the annealing parameter of 1.71±0.10 eV. The H2 formation-limited regime of reactivation occurs sooner as the annealing temperature is increased.

Dynamics of the aircraft configuration considered in this paper show a unique characteristic in that there are no stable attractors in the entire high angle-of-attack flight envelope. As a result, once the aircraft has departed from the normal flight regime, no standard technique can be applied to recover the aircraft. In this paper, using feedback linearization technique, a nonlinear controller is designed at high angles of attack, which is engaged after the aircraft departs from normal flight regime. This controller stabilizes the aircraft into a stable spin. Then a set of synthetic pilot inputs is applied to cause an automatic transition from the spin equilibrium to low angles of attack where the second controller is connected. This controller is a normal gain-scheduled controller designed to have a large domain of attraction at low angles of attack. It traps the aircraft into a low angle-of-attack level flight. This entire concept of recovery has been verified using six-degrees-of-freedom nonlinear simulation. Feedback linearization technique used to design a controller ensures internal stability only if the nonlinear plant has stable zero dynamics. Because zero dynamics depend on the selection of outputs, a new method of choosing outputs is described to obtain a plant that has stable zero dynamics. Certain important aspects pertaining to the implementation of a feedback linearization-based controller are also discussed.
