This paper reports on a new study conducted within a leading UK based (and US owned) car manufacturing company looking at the satisfaction between parties within a newly formed third party logistics (3PL) relationship. The study contains a two-way assessment of the relationship (i.e. the vehicle manufacturer’s Parts Supply and Logistics Operation’s assessment of the 3PL’s service and the 3PL’s assessment of the vehicle manufacturer’s relationship management ability). The study principally used an online SERVQUAL survey, (backed up with an on-line questionnaire, and face to face interviews) for data collection. The paper discusses the background and problems that have arisen in the relationship, the analysis of how each of the parties sees one other in terms of the service provided. Also, the findings and recommendations presented to management are outlined: these include factors such as the need for information sharing, reliability, flexibility, role specificity, trust and effective requirements management.

Warehouse is an essential component in the supply chain, linking the chain partners and providing them with functions of product storage, inbound and outbound operations along with value-added processes. Allocation of warehouse resources should be efficient and effective to achieve optimum productivity and reduce operational costs. Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a technology capable of providing real-time information about supply chain operations. It has been used by warehousing and logistic enterprises to achieve reduced shrinkage, improved material handling and tracking as well as increased accuracy of data collection. However, both academics and practitioners express concerns about challenges to RFID adoption in the supply chain. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the problems encountered in RFID implementation at warehouses, discussing the theoretical and practical adoption barriers and causes of not achieving full potential of the technology. Lack of foreseeable return on investment (ROI) and high costs are the most commonly reported obstacles. Variety of standards and radio wave frequencies are identified as source of concern for decision makers. Inaccurate performance of the RFID within the warehouse environment is examined. Description of integration challenges between warehouse management system and RFID technology is given. The paper discusses the existing solutions to technological, investment and performance RFID adoption barriers. Factors to consider when implementing the RFID technology are given to help alleviate implementation problems. By illustrating the challenges of RFID in the warehouse environment and discussing possible solutions the paper aims to help both academics and practitioners to focus on key areas constituting an obstacle to the technology growth. As more studies will address these challenges, the realisation of RFID benefits for warehouses and supply chain will become a reality.

In recent years the increased interest in introducing radio frequency technology (RFID) in warehousing was observed. First adopters of RFID reported numerous benefits, which included: reduced shrinkage, real-time tracking and better accuracy of data collection. Along with the academic and industrial discussion on benefits which can be achieved in RFID enabled warehouses there are reports on issues related to adoption of RFID technology in warehousing. This paper reviews results of scientific reports of RFID implementation in warehouses and discusses the adoption barriers and causes of not achieving full potential of the technology. Following adoption barriers are identified and set in warehousing context: lack of forseeable return on investment (ROI), unreliable performance of RFID systems, standarisation, integration with legacy systems and privacy/security concerns. As more studies will address these challenges, the realisation of RFID benefits for warehouses will become reality.

In recent years the applications of radio frequency identification technology (RFID) in warehousing have gained a great amount of attention as it is a challenging and dynamic environment. Analysing a receiving operation of third party logistic (3PL) operator running a tyre distribution centre, this paper presents a case study of RFID application in the warehouse. The receiving process is enhanced with the RFID technology, which provides contactless identification, less manual data entry errors, instant stock management. Moreover, these benefits could be maximised by the proposed use of the RFID generated data in accounting of costs and services, which is a novel application of the RFID technology.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has been identified as a crucial technology for the modern 21st century knowledge-based economy. Some businesses have realised benefits of RFID adoption through improvements in operational efficiency, additional cost savings, and opportunities for higher revenues. RFID research in warehousing operations has been less prominent than in other application domains. To investigate how RFID technology has had an impact in warehousing, a comprehensive analysis of research findings available from articles through leading scientific article databases has been conducted. Articles from years 1995 to 2010 have been reviewed and analysed with respect to warehouse operations, RFID application domains, benefits achieved and obstacles encountered. Four discussion topics are presented covering RFID in warehousing focusing on its applications, perceived benefits, obstacles to its adoption and future trends. This is aimed at elucidating the current state of RFID in the warehouse and providing insights for researchers to establish new research agendas and for practitioners to consider and assess the adoption of RFID in warehousing functions. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Current and future IT applications effecting supply chains in Europe and Pacific Asia are investigated. 3PL providers increasingly use IT systems for logistics, to enhance supply chain collaboration with business partners. Advanced systems are not always immediately profi table. Most companies already implement IT systems for processing transactions but motivations vary and barriers remain since 3PL providers incompletely understand clients' IT requirements. Long-term productivity gains require sophisticated IT systems to streamline cycles and improve supply chain visibility to facilitate, plan and make decisions. The paper investigates the role of current and future IT applications in 3PL services in Europe and the Far East. For clients' competitive advantage, 3PL providers increasingly contribute IT systems to logistics, helping 3PL providers to enhance supply chain collaboration with business partners. Through qualitative interviews, questionnaires and secondary data analysis, common attributes of both regions' IT systems are identified which enable supply chain partners to collaborate and share information. Most companies already implement IT systems for processing transactions, but recognized motivations and barriers remain, since 3PL providers incompletely understand clients' IT requirements. Long-term productivity gains require sophisticated IT systems to streamline cycles and improve supply chain visibility, thus facilitating planning and decision-making.

A heuristic for batching orders in a manual order-picking warehouse has been developed. It prioritizes orders based on due time to prevent mixing of orders of different priority levels. The order density of aisles criterion is used to form batches. It also determines the number of pickers required and assigns batches to pickers such that there is a uniform workload per unit of time. The effectiveness of the heuristic was studied by observing computational time and aisle congestion for various numbers of total orders and number of orders that form a batch. An initial heuristic performed well for small number of orders, but for larger number of orders, a partitioning technique is computationally more efficient, needing only minutes to solve for thousands of orders, while preserving 90% of the batch quality obtained with the original heuristic. Comparative studies between the heuristic and other published heuristics are needed. ^

El proceso de toma de decisiones en las bibliotecas universitarias es de suma importancia, sin embargo, se encuentra complicaciones como la gran cantidad de fuentes de datos y los grandes volúmenes de datos a analizar. Las bibliotecas universitarias están acostumbradas a producir y recopilar una gran cantidad de información sobre sus datos y servicios. Las fuentes de datos comunes son el resultado de sistemas internos, portales y catálogos en línea, evaluaciones de calidad y encuestas. Desafortunadamente estas fuentes de datos sólo se utilizan parcialmente para la toma de decisiones debido a la amplia variedad de formatos y estándares, así como la falta de métodos eficientes y herramientas de integración. Este proyecto de tesis presenta el análisis, diseño e implementación del Data Warehouse, que es un sistema integrado de toma de decisiones para el Centro de Documentación Juan Bautista Vázquez. En primer lugar se presenta los requerimientos y el análisis de los datos en base a una metodología, esta metodología incorpora elementos claves incluyendo el análisis de procesos, la calidad estimada, la información relevante y la interacción con el usuario que influyen en una decisión bibliotecaria. A continuación, se propone la arquitectura y el diseño del Data Warehouse y su respectiva implementación la misma que soporta la integración, procesamiento y el almacenamiento de datos. Finalmente los datos almacenados se analizan a través de herramientas de procesamiento analítico y la aplicación de técnicas de Bibliomining ayudando a los administradores del centro de documentación a tomar decisiones óptimas sobre sus recursos y servicios.

La eliminación de barreras entre países es una consecuencia que llega con la globalización y con los acuerdos de TLC firmados en los últimos años. Esto implica un crecimiento significativo del comercio exterior, lo cual se ve reflejado en un aumento de la complejidad de la cadena de suministro de las empresas. Debido a lo anterior, se hace necesaria la búsqueda de alternativas para obtener altos niveles de productividad y competitividad dentro de las empresas en Colombia, ya que el entorno se ha vuelto cada vez más complejo, saturado de competencia no sólo nacional, sino también internacional. Para mantenerse en una posición competitiva favorable, las compañías deben enfocarse en las actividades que le agregan valor a su negocio, por lo cual una de las alternativas que se están adoptando hoy en día es la tercerización de funciones logísticas a empresas especializadas en el manejo de estos servicios. Tales empresas son los Proveedores de servicios logísticos (LSP), quienes actúan como agentes externos a la organización al gestionar, controlar y proporcionar actividades logísticas en nombre de un contratante. Las actividades realizadas pueden incluir todas o parte de las actividades logísticas, pero como mínimo la gestión y ejecución del transporte y almacenamiento deben estar incluidos (Berglund, 2000). El propósito del documento es analizar el papel de los Operadores Logísticos de Tercer nivel (3PL) como promotores del desempeño organizacional en las empresas colombianas, con el fin de informar a las MIPYMES acerca de los beneficios que se obtienen al trabajar con LSP como un medio para mejorar la posición competitiva del país.
