The 87Sr/86Sr ratio of ancient seawater, as recorded in marine carbonates, is an important tracer of long-term variations in ocean chemistry (Burke et al., 1982, doi:10.1130/0091-7613(1982)10<516:VOSSTP>2.0.CO;2; Peterman et al., 1970, doi:10.1016/0016-7037(70)90154-7; Dasch and Biscaye, 1971, doi:10.1016/0012-821X(71)90164-6; Veizer and Compston, 1974, doi:10.1016/0016-7037(74)90099-4; Brass, 1976, doi:10.1016/0016-7037(76)90025-9). However, the Sr isotope balance of the oceans has been difficult to constrain; consequently, attempts to evaluate the temporal 87Sr/86Sr changes have been largely qualitative. To constrain the causes of these variations we have measured 87Sr/86Sr ratios in carefully cleaned unrecrystallized foraminifera from DSDP sites 21 and 357. The data presented here have been quantitatively modelled taking advantage of recent advances in understanding of the Sr geochemical cycle. They suggest that whereas hydrothermal fluxes and carbonate recycling are of major importance in defining the marine 87Sr/86Sr ratio, the major control over its variations through the Cenozoic has been changes in the isotope composition of Sr derived from the weathering of silicate rocks.

The strain dependence of particle cracking in aluminum alloys A356/357 in the T6 temper has been studied in a range of microstructures produced by varying solidification rate and Mg content, and by chemical (Sr) modification of the eutectic silicon. The damage accumulates linearly with the applied strain for all microstructures, but the rate depends on the secondary dendrite arm spacing and modification state. Large and elongated eutectic silicon particles in the unmodified alloys and large pi-phase (Al9FeMg3Si5) particles in alloy A357 show the greatest tendency to cracking. In alloy A356, cracking of eutectic silicon particles dominates the accumulation of damage while cracking of Fe-rich particles is relatively unimportant. However, in alloy A357, especially with Sr modification, cracking of the large pi-phase intermetallics accounts for the majority of damage at low and intermediate strains but becomes comparable with silicon particle cracking at large strains. Fracture occurs when the volume fraction of cracked particles (eutectic silicon and Fe-rich intermetallics combined) approximates 45 pct of the total particle volume fraction or when the number fraction of cracked particles is about 20 pct. The results are discussed in terms of Weibull statistics and existing models for dispersion hardening.

The wavelet packet transform decomposes a signal into a set of bases for time–frequency analysis. This decomposition creates an opportunity for implementing distributed data mining where features are extracted from different wavelet packet bases and served as feature vectors for applications. This paper presents a novel approach for integrated machine fault diagnosis based on localised wavelet packet bases of vibration signals. The best basis is firstly determined according to its classification capability. Data mining is then applied to extract features and local decisions are drawn using Bayesian inference. A final conclusion is reached using a weighted average method in data fusion. A case study on rolling element bearing diagnosis shows that this approach can greatly improve the accuracy ofdiagno sis.
