The highs (B1H) and lows (B1L) of human heart B1-adrenoceptors (AR)

The 1AR has two binding sites which can be activated to cause cardiostimulation. The first, termed, 1HAR (high affinity site of 1AR) is activated by noradrenaline and adrenaline and is blocked by relatively low concentrations of β-blockers including carvedilol (Kaumann and Molenaar, 2008). The other, termed, 1LAR (low affinity site of 1AR) has lower affinity for noradrenaline and adrenaline and is activated by some β-blockers including CGP12177 and pindolol, at higher concentrations than those required to block the receptor (Kaumann and Molenaar, 2008). (-)-CGP12177 is a non-conventional partial agonist that causes modest and transient increases of contractile force in human atrial trabeculae (Kaumann and Molenaar, 2008). These effects are markedly increased and maintained by inhibition of phosphodiesterase PDE3. The stimulant effects of (-)-CGP12177 at human β1ARs was verified with recombinant receptors (Kaumann and Molenaar, 2008). However, in a recent report it was proposed that the positive inotropic effects of CGP12177 are mediated through 3ARs in human right atrium (Skeberdis et al 2008). This proposal was not consistent with the lack of blockade of (-)-CGP12177 inotropic effects or increases in L-type Ca2+ current (ICa-L ) by the β3AR blocker 1 μM LY748,337 (Christ et al, 2010). On the otherhand, (-)-CGP12177 increases in inotropic effects and ICa-L were blocked by (-)-bupranolol 1-10 μM (Christ et al, 2010). Chronic infusion of (-)-CGP 12177 (10 mg/Kg/24 hours) for four weeks in an aortic constriction mouse model of heart failure caused an increase in left ventricular wall thickness, fibrosis and inflammation-related left ventricular gene expression levels. 25 million years to break a continent : early to middle Miocene rifting and syn-extensional magmatism in the southern Gulf of California

Cenozoic extension in western Mexico has been divided into two episodes separated by the change from convergence to oblique divergence at the plate boundary. The Gulf Extensional Province is thought to have started once subduction ended at ~12.5 Ma whereas early extension is classified as Basin and Range. Mid-Miocene volcanism of the Comondú group has been considered as a subduction-related arc, whereas post ~12.5 Ma volcanism would be extension-related. Our new integration of the continental onshore and offshore geology of the south-east Gulf region, backed by tens of Ar-Ar and U-Pb ages and geochemical studies, document an early-mid Miocene rifting and extension-related bimodal to andesitic magmatism prior to subduction termination. Between ~21 and 11 Ma a system of NNW-SSE high-angle extensional faults rifted the western side of the Sierra Madre Occidental (SMO) ignimbrite plateau. In Nayarit, rhyolitic domes and some basalts were emplaced along this extensional belt at 18-17 Ma. These rocks show strong antecrystic inheritance but an absence of Mesozoic and older xenocrysts, suggesting a genesis in the mid-upper crust triggered by extension-induced basaltic influx. In Sinaloa, large grabens were floored by huge dome complexes at ~21-17 Ma and filled by continental sediments with interlayered basalts dated at 15 Ma. Mid-Miocene volcanism, including the largely volcaniclastic Comondú strata in Baja California, was thus emplaced in rift basins and appears associated to decompression melting rather than subduction. Along the coast, flat-lying basaltic lava flows dated at 11-10 Ma are exposed just above the present sea level. Here crustal thickness is 25-20 Km, almost half that in the core of the SMO, implying significant lithosphere stretching before ~11 Ma. This mafic pulse, with relatively high Ti but still clear Nb-Ta negative spikes, may be related to the detachment of the lower part of the subducted slab, allowing asthenosphere to flow into parts of the mantle previously fluxed by subduction fluids. Very uniform OIB-like lavas appear in late Pliocene and Pleistocene, only 18 m.y. after the onset of rifting and ~9 m.y. after the end of subduction. Our study shows that rifting began much earlier than Late Miocene and progressively overwhelmed subduction in generating magmatism.

Enhanced hydrogen separation by vertically-aligned carbon nanotube membranes with zeolite imidazolate frameworks as a selective layer

Vertically-aligned carbon nanotube (VACNT) membranes show very high permeation fluxes due to the inherent smooth and frictionless nature of the interior of the nanotubes. However, the hydrogen selectivities are all in the Knudsen range and are quite low. In this study we grew molecular sieve zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) via secondary seeded growth on the VACNT membranes as a gas selective layer. The ZIF layer has a thickness of 5–6 μm and shows good contact with the VACNT membrane surface. The VACNT supported ZIF membrane shows much higher H2 selectivity than Ar (7.0); O2 (13.6); N2 (15.1) and CH4 (9.8). We conclude that tailoring metal–organic frameworks on the membrane surface can be an effective route to improve the gas separation performance of the VACNT membrane.
