A survey of the Australian barley powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei) population was conducted in 2010 and 2011. Three hundred and sixty-two isolates of the pathogen were collected from 18 locations across all six states of Australia. Thirty-two barley differentials were used and 11 genotypes were able to differentiate the population with virulence frequencies varying from 14.5 % to 96.6 %. Twenty-seven pathotypes were detected. Fifteen of them were found in both years and they represented 92.0 % of all isolates examined. No virulence was found on a further 16 major genes for resistance (Mla1, Mla3, Mla6, Mla7, Mla9, Mla10, Mla12, Mla13, Mla23, MlaN81, Mlh, MlLa, Mlp1, Ml(IM9), Ml(St) and mlo) indicating a relatively simple population and the ready availability of diverse sources of resistance. This paper reports the powdery mildew virulences present in Australia, provides intelligence for future resistance breeding and sets a basis for further virulence studies.

This special edition of the International Journal of Critical Indigenous Studies highlights the work of emerging scholars in the field of Indigenous Studies. The five featured authors were all finalists for the prize awarded by the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association (NAISA) to the best post-graduate student paper at the NAISA meeting held in 2010 in Tucson, Arizona. While the breadth of scholarship encompassed by the term ‘Indigenous Studies’ and the global representation of Indigenous peoples at NAISA mean that the topics and approaches vary widely, a common thematic of fraught post-colonial relations can be discerned within all five articles.

This special edition of the International Journal of Critical Indigenous Studies focuses upon the work scholars within the growing discipline of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health studies. The lamentable state of Indigenous health in Australia is reflected in Indigenous populations elsewhere, especially where settler colonialism has left an indelible mark. This special edition therefore speaks to where Indigenous health outcomes and the efficacy of remedies are causing concern. Common to all is the demand that Indigenous people are placed front and centre of all attempts to improve health outcomes and that improvements are sought in culturally sensitive ways. Terry Dunbar presents findings from a research study that set out to investigate the Indigenous experiences of health and family services in the Northern Territory, Australia. The study asserts that cultural security is an integral and vital element of any policy that will impact upon Indigenous peoples. Dunbar concludes by arguing that in seeking positive change with regard to cultural security or otherwise, the most vociferous champions of that change are likely to be the Aboriginal communities affected. The article by Bronwyn Fredericks, Karen Adams, Sandra Angus and Melissa Walker also highlights the need to involve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, in this case women, in the design and development of strategies affecting their lives. Utilising routine communication methods such the ‘talking circle’ and the process referred to as ‘talkin’ up’, where women ‘talk back’ to one another about issues of personal importance, the article argues that the health strategy which emerged through these consultation approaches was more accurately informed by and responsive to women’s health need. Indeed, the resulting strategy reflected the women’s sense of themselves and the clear direction they felt their health services and polices should take.

Within the history of twentieth-century design, there are a number of well-known objects and stories that are invoked time and time again to capture a pivotal moment or summarize a much broader historical transition. For example, Marcel Breuer’s Model B3 chair is frequently used as a stand-in for the radical investigations of form and new industrial materials occurring at the Bauhaus in the mid-1920s. Similarly, Raymond Loewy’s streamlined pencil sharpener has become historical shorthand for the emergence of modern industrial design in the 1930s. And any discussion of the development of American postwar “organic design” seems incomplete without reference to Charles and Ray Eames’s molded plywood leg splint of 1942. Such objects and narratives are dear to historians of modern design. They are tangible, photogenic subjects that slot nicely into exhibitions, historical surveys, and coffee-table best sellers...

Kolmen erillisen tutkimusryhmän työt on koottu yhdeksi raportiksi. Aineistot kerättiin syksyllä 2010 ja alkuvuodesta 2011. Ensimmäisenä esillä on tutkimusosio, jota varten on haastateltu kolmea sekataloja hallinnoivaa isännöitsijää. Toiseksi käydään läpi asukaskyselyn tuloksia. Kysely jätettiin parille sadalle asukkaalle, joista hieman päälle kolmekymmentä palautti lomakkeen. Havainnot ovat näin suuntaa-antavia. Lopuksi pohdittiin Ruoholahden sekatalojen mahdollista kehitystä taloyhtiöiden hallitusten jäseniltä pyydettyjen kirjoitelmien pohjalta. Kussakin ryhmätyössä käytiin läpi aiempaa Ruoholahtea koskevaa tutkimusta, jota on julkaistu 1990-luvun alusta lähtien noin viiden vuoden välein. Näin nyt yliopistollisena harjoitustyönä tehdyt selvitykset asettuvat osaksi pitkää, parin kymmenen vuoden seurantatutkimusta. Tekstit ovat muutamaa kirjoitusvirheen korjausta lukuun ottamatta opiskelijaryhmien kirjaamassa muodossa. Tutkimusryhmien työskentelyä avittivat Helsingin kaupunkisuunnitteluviraston toimistopäällikkö Rikhard Manninen ja Tietokeskuksen tutkija Ari Niska sekä kaupunkitutkija Pekka Vehviläinen.

This study presents a population projection for Namibia for years 2011–2020. In many countries of sub-Saharan Africa, including Namibia, the population growth is still continuing even though the fertility rates have declined. However, many of these countries suffer from a large HIV epidemic that is slowing down the population growth. In Namibia, the epidemic has been severe. Therefore, it is important to assess the effect of HIV/AIDS on the population of Namibia in the future. Demographic research on Namibia has not been very extensive, and data on population is not widely available. According to the studies made, fertility has been shown to be generally declining and mortality has been significantly increasing due to AIDS. Previous population projections predict population growth for Namibia in the near future, yet HIV/AIDS is affecting the future population developments. For the projection constructed in this study, data on population is taken from the two most recent censuses, from 1991 and 2001. Data on HIV is available from HIV Sentinel Surveys 1992–2008, which test pregnant women for HIV in antenatal clinics. Additional data are collected from different sources and recent studies. The projection is made with software (EPP and Spectrum) specially designed for developing countries with scarce data. The projection includes two main scenarios which have different assumptions concerning the development of the HIV epidemic. In addition, two hypothetical scenarios are made: the first considering the case where HIV epidemic would never have existed and the second considering the case where HIV treatment would never have existed. The results indicate population growth for Namibia. Population in the 2001 census was 1.83 million and is projected to result in 2.38/2.39 million in 2020 in the first two scenarios. Without HIV, population would be 2.61 million and without treatment 2.30 million in 2020. Urban population is growing faster than rural. Even though AIDS is increasing mortality, the past high fertility rates still keep young adult age groups quite large. The HIV epidemic shows to be slowing down, but it is still increasing the mortality of the working-aged population. The initiation of HIV treatment in 2004 in the public sector seems to have had an effect on many projected indicators, diminishing the impact of HIV on the population. For example, the rise of mortality is slowing down.
