Results of conventional K-Ar dating on five samples from two sites from the Izu-Bonin forearc are presented. Two samples recovered from a volcanic edifice and overlying sediments drilled on the western side of the forearc basin (Site 792) indicate a basement age of 34 Ma. This is consistent with early Oligocene biostratigraphic ages from the overlying sediments. Three samples from the basement of Hole 793B at the center of the basin are not analytically distinguishable, with a best age of 27.1 +/- 0.6 Ma. This is slightly younger than the 30-33 Ma biostratigraphic and magnetostratigraphic estimates from the overlying sediments, suggesting that alteration processes have lowered the apparent K-Ar ages. These ages suggest that syn-rift volcanism occurred in a forearc location during the middle Oligocene.

The book presents results of comprehensive geological investigations carried out during Cruise 8 of R/V "Vityaz-2" to the western part of the Black Sea in 1984. Systematic studies in the Black Sea during about hundred years have not weakened interest in the sea. Lithological and geochemical studies of sediments in estuarine areas of the Danube and the Kyzyl-Irmak rivers, as well as in adjacent parts of the deep sea and some other areas were the main aims of the cruise. Data on morphological structures of river fans, lithologic and chemical compositions of sediments in the fans and their areal distribution, forms of occurrence of chemical elements, role of organic matter and gases in sedimentation and diagenesis are given and discussed in the book.

Probable in-situ manganese deposits larger than 1 cm in diameter buried in ODP/DSDP cores were selected for study after examining previous descriptions of the manganese deposits in site reports and the ODP data base. Most of the selected samples from 11 cores occur at or just above sedimentary hiatuses or in slowly deposited sediments and are overlain by rapidly deposited sediments of biogenic, terrigenous or volcanogenic origin. The changes in sedimentation recorded in the lithostratigraphic sections around these deposits are closely related to changes in tectonic evolution, deep water circulation or biological productivity at the sites. The similarity in composition and structure of the buried deposits to those of the modern manganese nodules and crusts with no evidence of post-depositional change suggest that buried manganese deposits may be used as indicators of past sedimentary conditions during which they formed. Their major components are hydrogenetic and earlydiagenetic manganese minerals as well as detrital minerals. The characteristics of these manganese deposits suggests that similar processes of deposition have taken place since the Paleogene or older.
