Aims. In this paper we report calculations for energy levels, radiative rates, and excitation rates for transitions in O IV. Methods. The grasp (general-purpose relativistic atomic structure package) and FAC (flexible atomic code) were adopted for calculating energy levels and radiative rates, and the Dirac atomic R-matrix code (DARC) used to determine the excitation rates. Results. Oscillator strengths and radiative rates are reported for all E1, E2, M1, and M2 transitions among the lowest 75 levels of O IV. Additionally, lifetimes are reported for all levels and comparisons made with those available in the literature. Finally, effective collision strengths are reported for all transitions over a wide temperature range below 106 K. Comparisons are made with earlier results and the accuracy of the data is assessed.

We hypothesised that primary bronchial epithelial cells (PBECs) from subjects with COPD respond differently to Pseudomonas aeruginosa lipopolysaccharide (PA LPS) after cigarette smoke extract (CSE) exposure than PBECs obtained from smokers without airflow obstruction (SWAO) and non-smokers (NS).PBECs from 16 COPD subjects, 10 SWAOand 9 NS were cultured at air-liquid interface. Cultures were incubated with CSE prior to stimulation with PA LPS. IL-6 and IL-8 were measured by ELISA and Toll-like receptor 4 expression by FACS. Activation of NF-?B was determined by western blotting and ELISA, and MAPK and caspase-3 activity by western blotting. Apoptosis was evaluated using Annexin-V staining and the terminal transferase-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling (TUNEL) methods.Constitutive release of IL-8 and IL-6 was greatest from the COPD cultures. However, CSE pre-treatment followed by PA LPS stimulation reduced IL-8 release from COPD PBECs, but increased it from cells of SWAOand NS. TLR-4 expression,MAPK and NF-?B activation in COPD cultures were reduced after CSE treatment, but not in the SWAOor NS groups, which was associated with increased apoptosis.CSE attenuates inflammatory responses to LPS in cells from people with COPD but not those from non-smoking individuals and those who smoke without airflow obstruction.

The quality of single crystal diamond obtained by microwave CVD processes has been drastically improved in the last 5 years thanks to surface pretreatment of the substrates [A. Tallaire, J. Achard, F. Silva, R.S. Sussmann, A. Gicquel, E. Rzepka, Physica Status Solidi (A) 201, 2419-2424 (2004); G. Bogdan, M. Nesladek, J. D'Haen, J. Maes, V.V. Moshchalkov, K. Haenen, M. D'Olieslaeger, Physica Status Solidi (A) 202, 2066-2072 (2005); M. Yamamoto, T. Teraji, T. Ito, Journal of Crystal Growth 285, 130-136 (2005)]. Additionally, recent results have unambiguously shown the occurrence of (110) faces on crystal edges and (113) faces on crystal corners [F. Silva, J. Achard, X. Bonnin, A. Michau, A. Tallaire, O. Brinza, A. Gicquel, Physica Status Solidi (A) 203, 3049-3055 (2006)]. We have developed a 3D geometrical growth model to account for the final crystal morphology. The basic parameters of this growth model are the relative displacement speeds of (111), (110) and (113) faces normalized to that of the (100) faces, respectively alpha, beta, and gamma. This model predicts both the final equilibrium shape of the crystal (i.e. after infinite growth time) and the crystal morphology as a function of alpha, beta, gamma, and deposition time.
An optimized operating point, deduced from the model, has been validated experimentally by measuring the growth rate in (100), (111), (110), and (113) orientations. Furthermore, the evolution of alpha, beta, gamma as a function of methane concentration in the gas discharge has been established. From these results, crystal growth strategies can be proposed in order, for example, to enlarge the deposition area. In particular, we will show, using the growth model, that the only possibility to significantly increase the deposition area is, for our growth conditions, to use a (113) oriented substrate. A comparison between the grown crystal and the model results will be discussed and characterizations of the grown film (Photoluminescence spectroscopy, EPR, SEM) will be presented. In the double-detonation scenario for Type Ia supernovae, it is suggested that a detonation initiates in a shell of helium-rich material accreted from a companion star by a sub-Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf. This shell detonation drives a shock front into the carbon-oxygen white dwarf that triggers a secondary detonation in the core. The core detonation results in a complete disruption of the white dwarf. Earlier studies concluded that this scenario has difficulties in accounting for the observed properties of Type Ia supernovae since the explosion ejecta are surrounded by the products of explosive helium burning in the shell. Recently, however, it was proposed that detonations might be possible for much less massive helium shells than previously assumed (Bildsten et al.). Moreover, it was shown that even detonations of these minimum helium shell masses robustly trigger detonations of the carbon-oxygen core (Fink et al.). Therefore, it is possible that the impact of the helium layer on observables is less than previously thought. Here, we present time-dependent multi-wavelength radiative transfer calculations for models with minimum helium shell mass and derive synthetic observables for both the optical and ? -ray spectral regions. These differ strongly from those found in earlier simulations of sub-Chandrasekhar-mass explosions in which more massive helium shells were considered. Our models predict light curves that cover both the range of brightnesses and the rise and decline times of observed Type Ia supernovae. However, their colors and spectra do not match the observations. In particular, their B - V colors are generally too red. We show that this discrepancy is mainly due to the composition of the burning products of the helium shell of the Fink et al. models which contain significant amounts of titanium and chromium. Using a toy model, we also show that the burning products of the helium shell depend crucially on its initial composition. This leads us to conclude that good agreement between sub-Chandrasekhar-mass explosions and observed Type Ia supernovae may still be feasible but further study of the shell properties is required.
