This thesis studies optimisation problems related to modern large-scale distributed systems, such as wireless sensor networks and wireless ad-hoc networks. The concrete tasks that we use as motivating examples are the following: (i) maximising the lifetime of a battery-powered wireless sensor network, (ii) maximising the capacity of a wireless communication network, and (iii) minimising the number of sensors in a surveillance application. A sensor node consumes energy both when it is transmitting or forwarding data, and when it is performing measurements. Hence task (i), lifetime maximisation, can be approached from two different perspectives. First, we can seek for optimal data flows that make the most out of the energy resources available in the network; such optimisation problems are examples of so-called max-min linear programs. Second, we can conserve energy by putting redundant sensors into sleep mode; we arrive at the sleep scheduling problem, in which the objective is to find an optimal schedule that determines when each sensor node is asleep and when it is awake. In a wireless network simultaneous radio transmissions may interfere with each other. Task (ii), capacity maximisation, therefore gives rise to another scheduling problem, the activity scheduling problem, in which the objective is to find a minimum-length conflict-free schedule that satisfies the data transmission requirements of all wireless communication links. Task (iii), minimising the number of sensors, is related to the classical graph problem of finding a minimum dominating set. However, if we are not only interested in detecting an intruder but also locating the intruder, it is not sufficient to solve the dominating set problem; formulations such as minimum-size identifying codes and locatingâdominating codes are more appropriate. This thesis presents approximation algorithms for each of these optimisation problems, i.e., for max-min linear programs, sleep scheduling, activity scheduling, identifying codes, and locatingâdominating codes. Two complementary approaches are taken. The main focus is on local algorithms, which are constant-time distributed algorithms. The contributions include local approximation algorithms for max-min linear programs, sleep scheduling, and activity scheduling. In the case of max-min linear programs, tight upper and lower bounds are proved for the best possible approximation ratio that can be achieved by any local algorithm. The second approach is the study of centralised polynomial-time algorithms in local graphs â these are geometric graphs whose structure exhibits spatial locality. Among other contributions, it is shown that while identifying codes and locatingâdominating codes are hard to approximate in general graphs, they admit a polynomial-time approximation scheme in local graphs.

Because of frequent topology changes and node failures, providing quality of service routing in mobile ad hoc networks becomes a very critical issue. The quality of service can be provided by routing the data along multiple paths. Such selection of multiple paths helps to improve reliability and load balancing, reduce delay introduced due to route rediscovery in presence of path failures. There are basically two issues in such a multipath routing Firstly, the sender node needs to obtain the exact topology information. Since the nodes are continuously roaming, obtaining the exact topology information is a tough task. Here, we propose an algorithm which constructs highly accurate network topology with minimum overhead. The second issue is that the paths in the path set should offer best reliability and network throughput. This is achieved in two ways 1) by choice of a proper metric which is a function of residual power, traffic load on the node and in the surrounding medium 2) by allowing the reliable links to be shared between different paths.

Routing protocols for ad-hoc networks assume that the nodes forming the network are either under a single authority, or else that they would be altruistically forwarding data for other nodes with no expectation of a return. These assumptions are unrealistic since in ad-hoc networks, nodes are likely to be autonomous and rational (selfish), and thus unwilling to help unless they have an incentive to do so. Providing such incentives is an important aspect that should be considered when designing ad-hoc routing protocols. In this paper, we propose a dynamic, decentralized routing protocol for ad-hoc networks that provides incentives in the form of payments to intermediate nodes used to forward data for others. In our Constrained Selfish Routing (CSR) protocol, game-theoretic approaches are used to calculate payments (incentives) that ensure both the truthfulness of participating nodes and the fairness of the CSR protocol. We show through simulations that CSR is an energy efficient protocol and that it provides lower communication overhead in the best and average cases compared to existing approaches.

AbstractâPersonal communication devices are increasingly being equipped with sensors that are able to passively collect information from their surroundings â information that could be stored in fairly small local caches. We envision a system in which users of such devices use their collective sensing, storage, and communication resources to query the state of (possibly remote) neighborhoods. The goal of such a system is to achieve the highest query success ratio using the least communication overhead (power). We show that the use of Data Centric Storage (DCS), or directed placement, is a viable approach for achieving this goal, but only when the underlying network is well connected. Alternatively, we propose, amorphous placement, in which sensory samples are cached locally and informed exchanges of cached samples is used to diffuse the sensory data throughout the whole network. In handling queries, the local cache is searched first for potential answers. If unsuccessful, the query is forwarded to one or more direct neighbors for answers. This technique leverages node mobility and caching capabilities to avoid the multi-hop communication overhead of directed placement. Using a simplified mobility model, we provide analytical lower and upper bounds on the ability of amorphous placement to achieve uniform field coverage in one and two dimensions. We show that combining informed shuffling of cached samples upon an encounter between two nodes, with the querying of direct neighbors could lead to significant performance improvements. For instance, under realistic mobility models, our simulation experiments show that amorphous placement achieves 10% to 40% better query answering ratio at a 25% to 35% savings in consumed power over directed placement.

Personal communication devices are increasingly equipped with sensors that are able to collect and locally store information from their environs. The mobility of users carrying such devices, and hence the mobility of sensor readings in space and time, opens new horizons for interesting applications. In particular, we envision a system in which the collective sensing, storage and communication resources, and mobility of these devices could be leveraged to query the state of (possibly remote) neighborhoods. Such queries would have spatio-temporal constraints which must be met for the query answers to be useful. Using a simplified mobility model, we analytically quantify the benefits from cooperation (in terms of the system's ability to satisfy spatio-temporal constraints), which we show to go beyond simple space-time tradeoffs. In managing the limited storage resources of such cooperative systems, the goal should be to minimize the number of unsatisfiable spatio-temporal constraints. We show that Data Centric Storage (DCS), or "directed placement", is a viable approach for achieving this goal, but only when the underlying network is well connected. Alternatively, we propose, "amorphous placement", in which sensory samples are cached locally, and shuffling of cached samples is used to diffuse the sensory data throughout the whole network. We evaluate conditions under which directed versus amorphous placement strategies would be more efficient. These results lead us to propose a hybrid placement strategy, in which the spatio-temporal constraints associated with a sensory data type determine the most appropriate placement strategy for that data type. We perform an extensive simulation study to evaluate the performance of directed, amorphous, and hybrid placement protocols when applied to queries that are subject to timing constraints. Our results show that, directed placement is better for queries with moderately tight deadlines, whereas amorphous placement is better for queries with looser deadlines, and that under most operational conditions, the hybrid technique gives the best compromise.

This paper describes a protocol for dynamically configuring wireless sensor nodes into logical clusters. The concept is to be able to inject an overlay configuration into an ad-hoc network of sensor nodes or similar devices, and have the network configure itself organically. The devices are arbitrarily deployed and have initially have no information whatsoever concerning physical location, topology, density or neighbourhood. The Emergent Cluster Overlay (ECO) protocol is totally self-configuring and has several novel features, including nodes self-determining their mobility based on patterns of neighbour discovery, and that the target cluster size is specified externally (by the sensor network application) and is not directly coupled to radio communication range or node packing density. Cluster head nodes are automatically assigned as part of the cluster configuration process, at no additional cost. ECO is ideally suited to applications of wireless sensor networks in which localized groups of sensors act cooperatively to provide a service. This includes situations where service dilution is used (dynamically identifying redundant nodes to conserve their resources).

This letter exposed a serious unfairness problem with IEEE 802.11 MAC based Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) when operating TCP connections, and identifies the three common factors that contribute to this problem. The work initiated the development of a programmable wireless framework that is subsequently used in a spin-out company (TOM), and by the Telecoms Technology Testing centre in Taiwan(Dr D Chieng).

Cooperative MIMO (Multiple InputâMultiple Output) allows multiple nodes share their antennas to emulate antenna arrays and transmit or receive cooperatively. It has the ability to increase the capacity for future wireless communication systems and it is particularly suited for ad hoc networks. In this study, based on the transmission procedure of a typical cooperative MIMO system, we first analyze the capacity of single-hop cooperative MIMO systems, and then we derive the optimal resource allocation strategy to maximize the end-to-end capacity in multi-hop cooperative MIMO systems. The study shows three implications. First, only when the intra-cluster channel is better than the inter-cluster channel, cooperative MIMO results in a capacity increment. Second, for a given scenario there is an optimal number of cooperative nodes. For instance, in our study an optimal deployment of three cooperative nodes achieve a capacity increment of 2 bps/Hz when compared with direct transmission. Third, an optimal resource allocation strategy plays a significant role in maximizing end-to-end capacity in multi-hop cooperative MIMO systems. Numerical results show that when optimal resource allocation is applied we achieve more than 20% end-to-end capacity increment in average when compared with an equal resource allocation strategy.

Routing schemes are used to transfer data collectedby sensor nodes to base stations. In the literature many routing protocols for wireless sensor networks are suggested. In this work, four routing protocols for wireless sensor networks viz Flooding, Gossiping, GBR and LEACH have been simulated using TinyOS and their power consumption is studied using PowerTOSSIM. A realization of these protocols has beencarried out using Mica2 Motes.

Cache look up is an integral part of cooperative caching in ad hoc networks. In this paper, we discuss a cooperative caching architecture with a distributed cache look up protocol which relies on a virtual backbone for locating and accessing data within a cooperate cache. Our proposal consists of two phases: (i) formation of a virtual backbone and (ii) the cache look up phase. The nodes in a Connected Dominating Set (CDS) form the virtual backbone. The cache look up protocol makes use of the nodes in the virtual backbone for effective data dissemination and discovery. The idea in this scheme is to reduce the number of nodes involved in cache look up process, by constructing a CDS that contains a small number of nodes, still having full coverage of the network. We evaluated the effect of various parameter settings on the performance metrics such as message overhead, cache hit ratio and average query delay. Compared to the previous schemes the proposed scheme not only reduces message overhead, but also improves the cache hit ratio and reduces the average delay

Cooperative caching is an attractive solution for reducing bandwidth demands and network latency in mobile ad hoc networks. Deploying caches in mobile nodes can reduce the overall traffic considerably. Cache hits eliminate the need to contact the data source frequently, which avoids additional network overhead. In this paper we propose a data discovery and cache management policy for cooperative caching, which reduces the caching overhead and delay by reducing the number of control messages flooded in to the network. A cache discovery process based on location of neighboring nodes is developed for this. The cache replacement policy we propose aims at increasing the cache hit ratio. The simulation results gives a promising result based on the metrics of studies
