Visual problems may be the first symptoms of diabetes. There have been several reports of transient changes in refraction of people newly diagnosed with diabetes. Visual acuity and refraction may be affected when there are ocular biometric changes. Small but significant biometrical changes have been found by some authors during hyperglycaemia and during reduction of hyperglycaemia.[4] Here, we describe a case of type 2 diabetes that was detected from ocular straylight and intraocular thickness measurements...

The variation in temperature and concentration plays a crucial role in predicting the final microstructure during solidification of a binary alloy. Most of the experimental techniques used to measure concentration and temperature are intrusive in nature and affect the flow field. In this paper, the main focus is laid on in-situ, non-intrusive, transient measurement of concentration and temperature during the solidification of a binary mixture of aqueous ammonium chloride solution (a metal-analog system) in a top cooled cavity using laser based Mach-Zehnder Interferometric technique. It was found from the interferogram, that the angular deviation of fringe pattern and the total number of fringes exhibit significant sensitivity to refractive index and hence are functions of the local temperature and concentration of the NH4Cl solution inside the cavity. Using the fringe characteristics, calibration curves were established for the range of temperature and concentration levels expected during the solidification process. In the actual solidification experiment, two hypoeutectic solutions (5% and 15% NH4Cl) were chosen. The calibration curves were used to determine the temperature and concentration of the solution inside the cavity during solidification of 5% and 15% NH4Cl solution at different instants of time. The measurement was carried out at a fixed point in the cavity, and the concentration variation with time was recorded as the solid-liquid interface approached the measurement point. The measurement exhibited distinct zones of concentration distribution caused by solute rejection and Rayleigh Benard convection. Further studies involving flow visualization with laser scattering confirmed the Rayleigh Benard convection. Computational modeling was also performed, which corroborated the experimental findings. We report resonant Raman scattering of MoS2 layers comprising of single, bi, four and seven layers, showing a strong dependence on the layer thickness. Indirect band gap MoS2 in bulk becomes a direct band gap semiconductor in the monolayer form. New Raman modes are seen in the spectra of single- and few-layer MoS2 samples which are absent in the bulk. The Raman mode at similar to 230 cm(-1) appears for two, four and seven layers. This mode has been attributed to the longitudinal acoustic phonon branch at the M point (LA(M)) of the Brillouin zone. The mode at similar to 179 cm(-1) shows asymmetric character for a few-layer sample. The asymmetry is explained by the dispersion of the LA(M) branch along the G-M direction. The most intense spectral region near 455 cm(-1) shows a layer-dependent variation of peak positions and relative intensities. The high energy region between 510 and 645 cm(-1) is marked by the appearance of prominent new Raman bands, varying in intensity with layer numbers. Resonant Raman spectroscopy thus serves as a promising non invasive technique to accurately estimate the thickness of MoS2 layers down to a few atoms thick. Copyright (C) 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The Raman scattering spectra of MBE-grown GaNAs epilayers were investigated. The resonant enhancement of Raman scattering due to the E+ states in the conduction band was observed and the Raman peaks related to the phonons at non-Gamma points of the Brillouin Zone were detected. II was clearly seen that the local vibrational mode induced by nitrogen impurities evolves to the GaN-like lattice phonon mode when the nitrogen content increases. By comparing the Raman spectra measured before and after 850 degreesC rapid thermal annealing, it was tentatively suggested that two weak peaks were induced by the pairing or clustering effect of nitrogen.

Neutron-irradiated high-resistivity silicon detectors have been subjected to elevated temperature annealing (ETA). It has been found that both detector full depletion voltage and leakage current exhibit abnormal annealing (or ''reverse annealing'') behaviour for highly irradiated detectors: increase with ETA. Laser induced current measurements indicate a net increase of acceptor type space charges associated with the full depletion voltage increase after ETA. Current deep level transient spectroscopy (I-DLTS) and thermally stimulated current (TSC) data show that the dominant effect is the increase of a level at 0.39 eV below the conduction band (E(c) - 0.39 eV) or a level above the valence band (E(v) + 0.39 eV). Candidates tentatively identified for this level are the singly charged double vacancy (V-V-) level at E(c) - 0.39 eV, the carbon interstitial-oxygen interstitial (C-i-O-i) level at E(v) + 0.36 eV, and/or the tri-vacancy-oxygen center (V3O) at E(v) + 0.40 eV.

The results of second-order Raman-scattering experiments on n- and p-type 4H-SiC are presented, covering the acoustic and the optical overtone spectral regions. Some of the observed structures in the spectra are assigned to particular phonon branches and the points in the Brillouin zone from which the scattering originates. There exists a doublet at 626/636cm-1 with energy difference about 10cm-1 in both n- and p-type 4H-SiC,which is similar to the doublet structure with the same energy difference founded in hexagonal GaN,ZnO, and AlN.The cutoff frequency at 1926cm-1 of the second-order Raman is not the overtone of the A1(LO) peak of the n-type doping 4H-SiC,but that of the undoping one.The second-order Raman spectrum of 4H-SiC can hardly be affected by doping species or doping density.

The use of room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) as media for electrochemical application is very attractive. In this work, the electrochemical deposition of silver was investigated at a glassy carbon electrode in hydrophobic 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIMPF6) and hydrophilic 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIMBF4) RTILs and in KNO3 aqueous solution by cyclic voltammetric and potentiostatic transient techniques. The voltammograms showed the presence of reduction and oxidation peaks associated with the deposition and dissolution of silver from AgBF4 in both BMIMPF6 and BMIMBF4, resembling the redox behavior of AgNO3 in KNO3 aqueous solution. A crossover loop was observed in all the cyclic voltammograms of these electrochemical systems, indicating a nucleation process. From the analysis of the experimental current transients, it was shown that the electrochemical deposition process of silver in these media was characteristic of 3D nucleation with diffusion-controlled hemispherical growth, and the silver nucleation closely followed the response predicted for progressive nucleation in BMIMPF6 and instantaneous nucleation in KNO3 aqueous solution, respectively.

Experimental data are presented for the scattering of cold electrons by CS2, for both integral and backward scattering, between a few meV and a few hundred meV impact energy. Giant resonances with cross sections in excess of 50 Angstrom(2) are observed below 100 meV, associated with the transient formation of CS2- at 15 meV and with the bend and symmetric stretch of CS2 at thresholds of 49 and 82 meV, respectively. The resonance at 49 meV is 2 orders of magnitude greater in cross section than a dipole impulsive model predicts. These structures are superimposed on a sharp rise in the scattering cross section at low energy, which may be attributed to virtual state scattering.

We investigate the time evolution of entanglement in a process where a mobile particle is scattered by static spins. We show that entanglement increases monotonically during a transient and then saturates to a steady-state value. For a quasimonochromatic mobile particle, the transient time depends only on the group velocity and width of the incoming wave packet and is insensitive to the interaction strength and spin number of the scattering particles. These features do not depend on the interaction model and can be seen in various physical settings.

The first report of time-resolved resonance Raman (TR(3)) scattering in a supercritical fluid is presented. TR(3) spectra of the lowest triplet excited state (T-1) of anthracene in supercritical (SC) CO2 have been obtained over the pressure range 90-500 bar. These data have been complemented by conventional flash photolysis measurements of the excited state lifetime, transient absorbance difference, and fluorescence spectra over a similar pressure range. The spectroscopic data show systematic changes with increasing pressure; the Delta A spectra of the TI state recorded at two different temperatures display a red shift with increasing fluid pressure, which is in agreement with earlier work carried out over a smaller range of pressures. Similar shifts in the fluorescence are also observed. The vibrational frequencies of the T-1 state of anthracene are found to be relatively insensitive to applied pressure; indeed, the transient bands are readily identified by comparison with resonance Raman (RR) spectra of the T-1 state in cyclohexane solution. Small but well-defined shifts to lower cm(-1) with increasing pressure are observed in some of the vibrational bands of SC COE. The most marked change in the excited state Raman spectra is that the intensity of the T-1 anthracene features, relative to those of CO2, increases with applied pressure. The information which each of the above spectroscopic methods gives on the question of how pressure changes affect the structure and local environment of the excited state probe molecule in the SCF is discussed. Possible explanations for the observed increase in RR band intensities in terms of increased resonance Raman enhancement arising from the spectral shifts and/or the increased solubility of anthracene in CO2 with increasing pressure are also considered.

Near-infrared diffuse tomography was used in order to observe dynamic behaviour of flowing gases by measuring the 3D distributions of composition and temperature in a weakly scattering packed bed reactor, subject to wall effects and non-isothermal conditions. The technique was applied to the vapour phase hydrogen isotopic exchange reaction in a hydrophobic packing of low aspect ratio made of platinum on styrene divinyl benzene sulphonate copolymer resin. The results of tomography revealed uneven temperature and composition maps of water and deuterated water vapours in the core-packed bed and in the vicinity of the wall owing to flow maldistribution. The dynamic lag between the near-wall water vapour and deuterated water vapour compositions were observed suggesting that the convective transfer which was significant near the wall at the start, owing to high porosity, was also effective at large conversions. Inflammation and TNF-alpha signaling play a central role in most of the pathological conditions where cell transplantation could be applied. As shown by initial experiments, embryonic stem (ES) cells and ES-cell derived vascular cells express very low levels of TNF-alpha receptor I (TNFRp55) and thus do not induce cytokine expression in response to TNF-alpha stimulation. Transient transfection analysis of wild-type or deletion variants of the TNFRp55 gene promoter showed a strong activity for a 250-bp fragment in the upstream region of the gene. This activity was abolished by mutations targeting the Sp1/Sp3 or AP1 binding sites. Moreover, treatment with trichostatin A (TSA) led to a pronounced increase in TNFRp55 mRNA and promoter activity. Overexpression of Sp1 or c-fos further enhanced the TSA-induced luciferase activity, and this response was attenuated by Sp3 or c-jun coexpression. Additional experiments revealed that TSA did not affect the Sp1/Sp3 ratio but caused transcriptional activation of the c-fos gene. Thus, we provide the first evidence that ES and ES-cell-derived vascular cells lack cytokine expression in response to TNF-alpha stimulation due to low levels of c-fos and transcriptional activation of Sp1 that can be regulated by inhibition of histone deacetylase activity.

Effects of insulin upon glucose metabolism were investigated in chick embryos explanted in vitro during the first 30 h of incubation. Insulin stimulated the glucose consumption of the chick gastrula (18 h) and neurula (24 h), but had no effect on the late blastula (0 h:laying) and on the stage of six to eight somites (30 h). The increase in glucose consumption concerned both the embryonic area pellucida (AP) and extraembryonic area opaca (AO). AP responded to a greater extent (50%) and at a lower range of concentrations (0.1-1.0 ng/ml) than AO (30%; 1-100 ng/ml). Insulin had no effect on the oxygen consumption of blastoderms, whereas it stimulated the aerobic lactate production (approximately 70% of the additional glucose consumption was converted to lactate). The nanomolar range of stimulating concentrations suggests that insulin has a specific effect in the chick embryo, and that it could modulate glucose metabolism in ovo as well. The transient sensitivity of the embryo to insulin is discussed in relation to behavior of mesodermal cells.

Using the Physical Vapor Transport method, single crystals of Cd2Re207 have been grown, and crystals of dimensions up to 8x6x2 mm have been achieved. X-ray diffraction from a single crystal of Cd2Re207 has showed the crystal growth in the (111) plane. Powder X-ray diffraction measurements were performed on ^^O and ^^O samples, however no difference was observed. Assigning the space group Fd3m to Cd2Re207 at room temperature and using structure factor analysis, the powder X-ray diffraction pattern of the sample was explained through systematic reflection absences. The temperatiure dependence of the resistivity measurement of ^^O has revealed two structural phase transitions at 120 and 200 K, and the superconducting transition at 1.0 K. Using Factor Group Analysis on three different structiures of Cd2Re207, the number of IR and Raman active phonon modes close to the Brillouin zone centre have been determined and the results have been compared to the temperature-dependence of the Raman shifts of ^^O and ^*0 samples. After scaling (via removing Bose-Einstein and Rayleigh scattering factors from the scattered light) all spectra, each spectrum was fitted with a number of Lorentzian peaks. The temperature-dependence of the FWHM and Raman shift of mode Eg, shows the effects of the two structurjil phase transitions above Tc. The absolute reflectance of Cd2Re207 - '^O single crystals in the far-infrared spectral region (7-700 cm~^) has been measured in the superconducting state (0.5 K), right above the superconducting state (1.5 K), and in the normal state (4.2 K). Thermal reflectance of the sample at 0.5 K and 1.5 K indicates a strong absorption feature close to 10 cm~^ in the superconducting state with a reference temperature of 4.2 K. By means of Kramers-Kronig analysis, the absolute reflectance was used to calculate the optical conductivity and dielectric function. The real part of optical conductivity shows five distinct active phonon modes at 44, 200, 300, 375, and 575 cm~' at all temperatures including a Drude-like behavior at low frequencies. The imaginary part of the calculated dielectric function indicates a mode softening of the mode 44 cm~' below Tc.
