- Background Tobacco is the main preventable cause of death and disease worldwide. Adolescent smoking is increasing in many countries with poorer countries following the earlier experiences of affluent countries. Preventing adolescents starting smoking is crucial to decreasing tobacco-related illness. - Objective To assess effectiveness of family-based interventions alone and combined with school-based interventions to prevent children and adolescents from initiating tobacco use. - Data Sources 14 bibliographic databases and the Internet, journals hand-searched, experts consulted. - Study Eligibility Criteria, Participants, and Interventions Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) with children or adolescents and families, interventions to prevent starting tobacco use, follow-up ≥ 6 months. - Study Appraisal/Synthesis methods Abstracts/titles independently assessed and data independently entered by two authors. Risk-of-bias assessed with the Cochrane Risk-of-Bias tool. - Results Twenty-seven RCTs were included. Nine trials of never-smokers compared to a control provided data for meta-analysis. Family intervention trials had significantly fewer students who started smoking. Meta-analysis of twoRCTs of combined family and school interventions compared to school only, showed additional significant benefit. The common feature of effective high intensity interventions was encouraging authoritative parenting. - Limitations Only 14 RCTs provided data for meta-analysis (about 1/3 of participants). Of the 13 RCTs which did not provide data for meta-analysis eight compared a family intervention to no intervention and one found significant effects, and five compared a family + school intervention to a school intervention and none found additional significant effects. - Conclusions and Implications of Key Findings There is moderate quality evidence that family-based interventions prevent children and adolescents starting to smoke.

Pisum sativum seeds contain a conserved acetylcholinesterase (AChE) which is active during the early stages of germination. The enzyme activity soon disappears and reappears after 72 hr of germination. A protein devoid of catalytic ability, but exhibiting similar chromatographic and electrophoretic properties as the active AChE, could be detected after 24 hr of germination. The pattern of incorporation of labelled amino acids into AChE and the influence of cycloheximide revealed that the AChE found in the roots from 72 hr onwards was entirely new. During this period of growth, the AChE protein accounts for 4–10% of the total proteins in the root tissue.

The rheological properties of polymer melts and other complex macromolecular fluids are often successfully modeled by phenomenological constitutive equations containing fractional differential operators. We suggest a molecular basis for such fractional equations in terms of the generalized Langevin equation (GLE) that underlies the renormalized Rouse model developed by Schweizer [J. Chem. Phys. 91, 5802 (1989)]. The GLE describes the dynamics of the segments of a tagged chain under the action of random forces originating in the fast fluctuations of the surrounding polymer matrix. By representing these random forces as fractional Gaussian noise, and transforming the GLE into an equivalent diffusion equation for the density of the tagged chain segments, we obtain an analytical expression for the dynamic shear relaxation modulus G(t), which we then show decays as a power law in time. This power-law relaxation is the root of fractional viscoelastic behavior.

Sporadic instances of tetrasomaty in the primary and secondary roots of five varieties ofCicer arietinum Linn. are illustrated. The phenomenon was more common in Varieties I and II. The SAT-chromosomes are reliable guides to estimate the degree of polysomaty, since pre-treatment withp-dichlorobenzene revealed that cell types with 32 chromosomes at metaphase had two pairs of SAT-chromosomes associated with the nucleolus at prophase. Tetrasomatic cells appear to be limited to the dermatogen and periblem. Higher degrees of polysomaty were not observed.

The morphogenetic pathway leading to plant differentiation in tobacco mesophyll protoplasts could be regulated. The course of development via organogenesis or embryogenesis was controlled by manipulating nutrient media, culture conditions and hormone requirements. A lowering of molarity of medium after 5 weeks of protoplast culture, inclusion of GA3 (0.5 mg/l) in the medium for first 8 weeks of culture and exclusion of reduced nitrogen in the medium resulted in shoot organogenesis, while maintenance of higher molarity of the medium till 8 weeks, reduced nitrogen in the medium and removal of 2, 4-D after 5 weeks of culture induced embryogenesis. Regenerability of viable plants was obtained by both developmental pathways. The implications of tobacco embryogenesis system in plant molecular genetics were highlighted.

Digoxigenin (DIG)-labeled DNA probe was developed for a sensitive and rapid detection of the Tobacco streak virus (TSV) isolates in India by dot-blot and tissue print hybridization techniques. DIG-labeled DNA probe complementary to the coat protein (CP) region of TSV sunflower isolate was designed and used to detect the TSV presence at field levels. Dot-blot hybridization was used to check a large number of TSV isolates with a single probe. In addition, a sensitivity of the technique was examined with the different sample extraction methods. Another technique, the tissue blot hybridization offered a simple, reliable procedure and did not require a sample processing. Thus, both non-radioactively labeled probe techniques could facilitate the sample screening during TSV outbreaks and offer an advantage in quarantine services.

The habit of "drinking smoke" , meaning tobacco smoking, caused a true controversy in early modern England. The new substance was used both for its alleged therapeutic properties as well as its narcotic effects. The dispute over tobacco continues the line of written controversies which were an important means of communication in the sixteenth and seventeenth century Europe. The tobacco controversy is special among medical controversies because the recreational use of tobacco soon spread and outweighed its medicinal use, ultimately causing a social and cultural crisis in England. This study examines how language is used in polemic discourse and argumentation. The material consists of medical texts arguing for and against tobacco in early modern England. The texts were compiled into an electronic corpus of tobacco texts (1577 1670) representing different genres and styles of writing. With the help of the corpus, the tobacco controversy is described and analyzed in the context of early modern medicine. A variety of methods suitable for the study of conflict discourse were used to assess internal and external text variation. The linguistic features examined include personal pronouns, intertextuality, structural components, and statistically derived keywords. A common thread in the work is persuasive language use manifested, for example, in the form of emotive adjectives and the generic use of pronouns; the latter is especially pronounced in the dichotomy between us and them. Controversies have not been studied in this manner before but the methods applied have supplemented each other and proven their suitability in the study of conflictive discourse. These methods can also be applied to present-day materials.

Chilli-based repellents have shown promise as deterrents against crop-raiding elephants in Africa. We experimented with ropes coated with chilli-based repellent as a cheap alternative to existing elephant cropraid deterrent methods in India. Three locations (Buxa Tiger Reserve, Wyanad Wildlife Sanctuary and Hosur Forest Division) representing varying rainfall regimes from high to low, and with histories of intense elephant-agriculture conflict, were selected for the experiments that were conducted over 2-3 months during the pre-harvest period of the kharif season in late 2006. Chilli and tobacco powder mixed with waste oil was applied to ropes strung around agricultural fields of 1.4-5.5 km perimeter and elephant approaches were monitored. Elephants breached the rope fences a few times at all three study sites. Female-led herds were far more deterred (practically 100% reduction) than were solitary males (c. 50%) by the chilli-tobacco rope. Efficacy of this method as a deterrent was significantly better in the low-rainfall regime relative to medium and high-rainfall regimes. The initial promising results present a case for more rigorous experimentation; these would help determine if the elephants avoiding the rope are responding physiologically to the chilli-tobacco smell or merely reacting cautiously to a novel substance in their environment.

To test the reliability of the radiocarbon method for determining root age, we analyzed fine roots (originating from the years 1985 to 1993) from ingrowth cores with known maximum root age (1 to 6 years old). For this purpose, three Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands were selected from boreal forests in Finland. We analyzed root 14C age by the radiocarbon method and compared it with the above-mentioned known maximum fine root age. In general, ages determined by the two methods (root 14C age and ingrowth core root maximum age) were in agreement with each other for roots of small diameter (<0.5mm). By contrast, in most of the samples of fine roots of larger diameter (1.5-2mm), the 14C age of root samples of 1987-89 exceeded the ingrowth core root maximum age by 1-10 years. This shows that these roots had received a large amount of older stored carbon from unknown sources in addition to atmospheric CO2 directly from photosynthesis. We conclude that the 14C signature of fine roots, especially those of larger diameter, may not always be indicative of root age, and that further studies are needed concerning the extent of possible root uptake of older carbon and its residence time in roots. The effects of preincubation of cut tobacco leaf explants on Agrobacterium transformation efficiency and induction of Agrobacterium virE-lacZ fusion were evaluated. Transformation efficiency was evaluated by histochemical and fluorometric analysis of beta-glucuronidase in leaf rings transformed with Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain LBA4404(pKIWI105). The transformation efficiency increased by 2-fold, 5-fold, and 4.3-fold upon preincubation for 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively. Preincubation for 24, 48, and 72 h increased the ability of tobacco leaf segments to induce Agrobacterium virE by 2.3-fold, 3.5-fold and 4.5-fold, respectively. The requirement of preincubation for increased transformation efficiency was obviated by the addition of 100 mu M acetosyringone to the freshly cut leaf rings cocultivated with Agrobacterium. The production of vii gene inducers by the leaf rings during the preincubation period is an important factor that contributes to increased transformation efficiency of Agrobacterium upon preincubation. Tobacco streak virus (TSV), a member of the genus Ilarvirus (family Bromoviridae), has a tripartite genome and forms quasi-isometric virions. All three viral capsids, encapsidating RNA 1, RNA 2 or RNA 3 and subgenomic RNA 4, are constituted of a single species of coat protein (CP). Formation of virus-like particles (VLPs) could be observed when the TSV CP gene was cloned and the recombinant CP (rCP) was expressed in E. coli. TSV VLPs were found to be stabilized by Zn2+ ions and could be disassembled in the presence of 500 mM CaCl2. Mutational analysis corroborated previous studies that showed that an N-terminal arginine-rich motif was crucial for RNA binding; however, the results presented here demonstrate that the presence of RNA is not a prerequisite for assembly of TSV VLPs. Instead, the N-terminal region containing the zinc finger domain preceding the arginine-rich motif is essential for assembly of these VLPs.

Tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNA) have implications in the pathogenesis of various lung diseases and conditions are prevalent even in non-smokers. N-nitrosonornicotine (NNN) and 4-(methyl nitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) are potent pulmonary carcinogens present in tobacco product and are mainly responsible for lung cancer. TSNA reacts with pulmonary surfactants, and alters the surfactant phospholipid. The present study was undertaken to investigate the in vitro exposure of rat lung tissue slices to NNK or NNN and to monitor the phospholipid alteration by P-32]orthophosphate labeling. Phospholipid content decreased significantly in the presence of either NNK or NNN with concentration and time dependent manner. Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is the main phospholipid of lung and significant reduction was observed in PC similar to 61%, followed by phosphatidylglycerol (PG) with 100 mu M of NNK, whereas NNN treated tissues showed a reduction in phosphatidylserine (PS) similar to 60% and PC at 250 mu M concentration. The phospholipase A(2) assays and expression studies reveal that both compounds enhanced phospholipid hydrolysis, thereby reducing the phospholipid content. Collectively, our data demonstrated that both NNK and NNN significantly influenced the surfactant phospholipid level by enhanced phospholipase A(2) activity. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
