This paper aims to draw some outlines of what I understand to be background for possible investigations that examine the cultural / educational problems in Brazil from the perspective of Critical Theory. Under the light of these outlines I intend to present two directions of research which are the main objectives of the research project I develop within the Department of Educational Psychology of College of Sciences and Letters of Unesp in Araraquara. In particular, it is necessary to understand the internal deformation that education suffers as a concrete substance of the teaching process in schools, which makes an empirical investigation how the cultural industry’s schemes become present in the “didactic pedagogical scene” necessary. On the other hand, the elucidation of this problem requires a theoretical investigation about the broader process of constitution of today’s subjectivity under the impact of that industry. Both goals set forth herein are intended to provide subsidies to make readings about new educational demands possible in Brazil.

This article is part of the methodological approach concerning theoretical investigation aspects, developed from the analysis of research in Psychoanalysis. Due to its peculiarities, research in Psychoanalysis raises issues and questions which advance far beyond the positivist conceptions which underline the dominant paradigm of our present day production of knowledge. Considering Psychoanalysis as the effect of the psychoanalitic act in itself, mainly when considering its theoretical scientific approach which must be part of a specific method, the following question is raised: what are the real possibilities of research in Psychoanalysis, specifically theoretic al research in Psychoanalysis? The article aims at articulating relevant issues concerning the field of Psychoanalysis and their relevant development for research in this field. To sum up, the article highlights issues concerning the role of the researcher as a necessary and decisive condition for any theoretical research in the field of Psychoanalysis.

This research was done by a theoretical investigation about the moment when a child starts to go to education places like a school before the obligatory age of usual education, here called Precocious Institutionalization, and the changings that it results at the productions of subjectivity, at the relationship between children and family, specially the maternity in the society. Using theory references of Foucault, Deleuze and Guattari, was done the analysis with the help of cartography. As a result, there is a kind of map of the way that the human subjectivity is produced by two different society strategies, the disciplinary society integrated with the control society using biopolitics inside the contemporary questions to increase capitalism system.

This study is a theoretical investigation which intends to discuss possible relationships between work and boredom based on notable authors and theories. Unlike modern industrial societies centered mainly in production, new societies are characterized by increased consumption. The meaningless work and non-productive and prospective consumption leads the subject to be only a digestive organ providing favorable conditions for the presence of boredom, a mode of subjectivation characterized by a status of unconcern for the world, i.e. a low-intensity lifestyle.

Based in aesthetic relationship between concepts of content and form intends to establish an relationship of analogy between ornaments and crystals. With the objective of building an theoretical investigation of relating the dynamics that happens in the crystals´ atoms to the symmetrical intervals of the ornamental patterns, it tries to draw a reasoning line that is going from the ‘Idea’ of Plato and ‘poiésis’ of Aristotle, until Hegel's philosophical enlargement, that admits the aesthetics as a science of the art integrated in a metaphysical process. Inherent to this question intends, in interrelation terms between aesthetics and metaphysics, content as being intelligent beginning, energy, and form as primitive element, matter, in order to evidence the possibility to calculate the same present symmetries in the ornamental arts like in the nature.

We have performed an ab initio theoretical investigation of substitutional Mn(Zn) atoms in planar structures of ZnO, viz., monolayer [(ZnO)(1)] and bilayer [(ZnO)(2)] systems. Due to the 2-D quantum confinement effects, in those Mn -doped (ZnO)(1) and (ZnO)(2) structures, the antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling between (nearest neighbor) Mn(Zn) impurities have been strengthened when compared with the one in ZnO bulk systems. On the other hand, we find that the magnetic state of these systems can be tuned from AFM to FM by adding holes, which can be supplied by a p-type doping or even photoionization processes. Whereas, upon addition of electrons (n-type doping), the system keeps its AFM configuration.

We present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigation of the thermodynamic properties: specific heat, magnetization, and thermal expansion in the vicinity of the field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) around the lower critical field H-c1 approximate to 2 T in NiCl2-4SC(NH2)(2). A T-3/2 behavior in the specific heat and magnetization is observed at very low temperatures at H = H-c1, which is consistent with the universality class of Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons. The temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient at H-c1 shows minor deviations from the expected T-1/2 behavior. Our experimental study is complemented by analytical calculations and quantum Monte Carlo simulations, which reproduce nicely the measured quantities. We analyze the thermal and the magnetic Gruneisen parameters, which are ideal quantities to identify QCPs. Both parameters diverge at H-c1 with the expected T-1 power law. By using the Ehrenfest relations at the second-order phase transition, we are able to estimate the pressure dependencies of the characteristic temperature and field scales.

We report a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the length dependence and anchor group dependence of the electrical conductance of a series of oligoyne molecular wires in single-molecule junctions with gold contacts. Experimentally, we focus on the synthesis and properties of diaryloligoynes with n = 1, 2, and 4 triple bonds and the anchor dihydrobenzo[b]thiophene (BT). For comparison, we also explored the aurophilic anchor group cyano (CN), amino (NH2), thiol (SH), and 4-pyridyl (PY). Scanning tunneling microscopy break junction (STM-BJ) and mechanically controllable break junction (MCBJ) techniques are employed to investigate single-molecule conductance characteristics. The BT moiety is superior as compared to traditional anchoring groups investigated so far. BT-terminated oligoynes display a 100% probability of junction formation and possess conductance values which are the highest of the oligoynes studied and, moreover, are higher than other conjugated molecular wires of similar length. Density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations are reported for oligoynes with n = 1−4 triple bonds. Complete conductance traces and conductance distributions are computed for each family of molecules. The sliding of the anchor groups leads to oscillations in both the electrical conductance and the binding energies of the studied molecular wires. In agreement with experimental results, BT-terminated oligoynes are predicted to have a high electrical conductance. The experimental attenuation constants βH range between 1.7 nm−1 (CN) and 3.2 nm−1 (SH) and show the following trend: βH(CN) < βH(NH2) < βH(BT) < βH(PY) ≈ βH(SH). DFT-based calculations yield lower values, which range between 0.4 nm−1 (CN) and 2.2 nm−1 (PY).

The paths towards high efficiency multijunction solar cells operating inside real concentrators at ultra high concentration (>1000 suns) are described. The key addressed factors comprehend: 1) the development of an optimized tunnel junction with a high peak current density (240 A/cm2) to mitigate the non-uniform light profiles created by concentrators, 2) the inclusion of highly conductive semiconductor lateral layers to minimize the effects of the non-uniform light profiles in general, and the chromatic aberration in particular; and 3) an adequate design of reliability studies to test multijunction solar cells for real operation conditions in order to determine the fragile parts in the device and improve them. These challenges are faced by means of experimental and theoretical investigation using a quasi-3D distributed circuital model.

While taking paths from the archive to the new, this dissertation reflects on the resulting impacts of the introduction, massification and dissemination of digital technology, in the way we store and deal with information, inside the complex that we understand as culture. To this end, a theoretical investigation is performed in order to build a conceptual body from which concepts are drawn in order to effectuate a practical research. The theoretical research starts with an exordium in which the concept of the archive is deconstructed in order to identify it as a device of power and to analyse its transition from a technical analog object into a digital technology. Following this, a historical context is established, drawing on the evolution of power exercises and apparatuses, and a reading of the impacts of the present technological mediation on experience, knowledge cons¬truction and forms of control is developed. Finally, some hypotheses on the evolution of technology are formulated. The practical research materializes in the form of a digital platform which takes place in two moments: one of archive, the other of program. The first moment, of archive, con¬sists of a repository of projects dealing with the dissertation’s subject. The second moment, of program, is configured as a cultural program implemented through computer programs. These, in their execution, result in performances which, taking from the information col¬lected on the archive generate a new experience of that same information. To this effect, a framework was structured in order to have computational processes systematized in a way that the performances result in experiences with a potential for novelty, expression and reflection. Both theoretical and practical components of the research seek to address digital technology not as an end in itself, but as a factor that affects human experience and behaviour

Despite decades of experimental and theoretical investigation on thin films, considerable uncertainty exists in the prediction of their critical rupture thickness. According to the spontaneous rupture mechanism, common thin films become unstable when capillary waves. at the interfaces begin to grow. In a horizontal film with symmetry at the midplane. unstable waves from adjacent interfaces grow towards the center of the film. As the film drains and becomes thinner, unstable waves osculate and cause the film to rupture, Uncertainty sterns from a number of sources including the theories used to predict film drainage and corrugation growth dynamics. In the early studies, (lie linear stability of small amplitude waves was investigated in the Context of the quasi-static approximation in which the dynamics of wave growth and film thinning are separated. The zeroth order wave growth equation of Vrij predicts faster wave growth rates than the first order equation derived by Sharma and Ruckenstein. It has been demonstrated in an accompanying paper that film drainage rates and times measured by numerous investigations are bounded by the predictions of the Reynolds equation and the more recent theory of Manev, Tsekov, and Radoev. Solutions to combinations of these equations yield simple scaling laws which should bound the critical rupture thickness of foam and emulsion films, In this paper, critical thickness measurements reported in the literature are compared to predictions from the bounding scaling equations and it is shown that the retarded Hamaker constants derived from approximate Lifshitz theory underestimate the critical thickness of foam and emulsion films, The non-retarded Hamaker constant more adequately bounds the critical thickness measurements over the entire range of film radii reported in the literature. This result reinforces observations made by other independent researchers that interfacial interactions in flexible liquid films are not adequately represented by the retarded Hamaker constant obtained from Lifshitz theory and that the interactions become significant at much greater separations than previously thought. The development of strategy remains a debate for academics and a concern for practitioners. Published research has focused on producing models for strategy development and on studying how strategy is developed in organisations. The Operational Research literature has highlighted the importance of considering complexity within strategic decision making; but little has been done to link strategy development with complexity theories, despite organisations and organisational environments becoming increasingly more complex. We review the dominant streams of strategy development and complexity theories. Our theoretical investigation results in the first conceptual framework which links an established Strategic Operational Research model, the Strategy Development Process model, with complexity via Complex Adaptive Systems theory. We present preliminary findings from the use of this conceptual framework applied to a longitudinal, in-depth case study, to demonstrate the advantages of using this integrated conceptual model. Our research shows that the conceptual model proposed provides rich data and allows for a more holistic examination of the strategy development process. © 2012 Operational Research Society Ltd. This thesis presents theoretical investigation of three topics concerned with nonlinear optical pulse propagation in optical fibres. The techniques used are mathematical analysis and numerical modelling. Firstly, dispersion-managed (DM) solitons in fibre lines employing a weak dispersion map are analysed by means of a perturbation approach. In the case of small dispersion map strengths the average pulse dynamics is described by a perturbation approach (NLS) equation. Applying a perturbation theory, based on the Inverse Scattering Transform method, an analytic expression for the envelope of the DM soliton is derived. This expression correctly predicts the power enhancement arising from the dispersion management.Secondly, autosoliton transmission in DM fibre systems with periodical in-line deployment of nonlinear optical loop mirrors (NOLMs) is investigated. The use of in-line NOLMs is addressed as a general technique for all-optical passive 2R regeneration of return-to-zero data in high speed transmission system with strong dispersion management. By system optimisation, the feasibility of ultra-long single-channel and wavelength-division multiplexed data transmission at bit-rates ³ 40 Gbit s-1 in standard fibre-based systems is demonstrated. The tolerance limits of the results are defined.Thirdly, solutions of the NLS equation with gain and normal dispersion, that describes optical pulse propagation in an amplifying medium, are examined. A self-similar parabolic solution in the energy-containing core of the pulse is matched through Painlevé functions to the linear low-amplitude tails. The analysis provides a full description of the features of high-power pulses generated in an amplifying medium.
