Goals This study aims to map the effect of interrogative function on the intonation of spontaneous and read Finnish. Earlier research shows that the most prominent feature in Finnish question intonation is an appeal to the listener. Question word questions typically start with a high peak which is followed by falling intonation. In yes/no questions, F0 remains on a high level until the word carrying sentence stress and then falls. Final rises are mainly found in intonation clichés such as "Ai mitä?" ("What?") These earlier results are based on read speech and enacted dialogues. In this study, questions and statements found in spontaneous dialogues were compared. These utterances were also compared with read versions of the same utterances. Fundamental frequency values were compared using a mixed model. Contours were also grouped using auditory and visual inspection. Thus it was possible to compare frequencies of contour types according to utterance type and speech style. The position of questions in the F0 distribution of the whole material was also investigated in this study. Method The material consisted of four spontaneous dialogues and their read versions. The speakers were young adults from the Helsinki metropolitan area, four females and four males. The whole material was first divided into broad dialogue function categories arising from the material and F0 curves were calculated for each category. After this, 277 questions and 244 statements were selected for closer inspection. Values reflecting F0 distribution and contour shape were measured from the F0 contours of these utterances. A mixed model was used to analyse the differences. Utterance type, question type, speech style and speaker gender were used as fixed effects. The frequencies of F0 contour types were compared using a Chi square test. Additional material in this study came from eight young female speakers in central Finland. Results and conclusions In the mixed model analysis, significant differences were found both between questions and statements and between spontaneous and read speech. Generally, utterance type affected the variables reflecting contour type while speech style affected the variables reflecting F0 distribution. The effect of question type was not clearly visible. In read speech the contours resembled earlier results more closely. Speakers had different strategies in differentiating between questions and statements. In the whole material, F0 was slightly higher in questions than in statements. The effect of dialectal background could be seen in the contour types. The results show that interrogative function affects intonation in both spontaneous and read Finnish.

We show that the application of a modest dc electrical field, about 4 V/cm, can significantly reduce grain growth in yttria-stabilized polycrystalline zirconia. These measurements were made by annealing samples, for 10 h at 1300°C, with and without an electrical field. The finding adds a new dimension to the role of applied electrical fields in sintering and superplasticity, phenomena that are critical to the net-shape processing of ceramics. Grain-growth retardation will considerably enhance the rates of sintering and superplasticity, leading to significant energy efficiencies in the processing of ceramics.

The influence of Lorentz and Doppler line-broadening mechanisms on the small-signal optical gain of lasers and, in particular, gasdynamic lasers, is discussed. A relationship between the critical parameter reflecting the line-broadening mechanisms and some of the important parameters arising out of the gain optimization studies in CO2-N2 gasdynamic lasers is established. Using this relationship, methods by which the deleterious effect of the Doppler mechanisms on small-signal gain can be suppressed are suggested. An experimental study is presented to show the effect of the cowl location and shape on the shock interaction phenomena in the inlet region for a 2D, planar scramjet inlet model. Investigations include schlieren visualization around the cowl region and heat transfer rate measurement inside the inlet chamber. Both regular and Mach reflections are observed when the forebody ramp shock reflects from the cowl plate. Mach stem heights of 3.3 mm and 4.1 mm are measured in 18.5 mm and 22.7 mm high inlet chambers respecively. Increased heat transfer rate is measured at the same location of chamber for cowls of longer lenghs is indicating additional mass flow recovery by the inlet.

A generalised theory for the natural vibration of non-uniform thin-walled beams of arbitrary cross-sectional geometry is proposed. The governing equations are obtained as four partial, linear integro-differential equations. The corresponding boundary conditions are also obtained in an integro-differential form. The formulation takes into account the effect of longitudinal inertia and shear flexibility. A method of solution is presented. Some numerical illustrations and an exact solution are included.

Various carbon nanostructures (CNs) have been prepared by a simple deposition technique based on the pyrolysis of a new carbon source material tetrahydrofuran (THF) mixed with ferrocene using quartz tube reactor in the temperature range 700-1100 degrees C. A detailed study of how the synthesis parameter such as growth temperature affects the morphology of the carbon nanostructures is presented. The obtained CNs are investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron dispersive scattering (EDS)thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), Raman and transmission electron microscope (TEM). It is observed that at 700 degrees C. normal CNTs are formed. Iron filled multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and carbon nanoribbons (CNRs) are formed at 950 degrees C. Magnetic characterization of iron filled MWCNTs and CNRs studied at 300 K by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) reveals that these nanostructures have an enhanced coercivity (Hc = 1049 Oe) higher than that of bulk Fe. The large shape anisotropy of MWCNTs, which act on the encapsulated material (Fe), is attributed for the contribution of the higher coercivity. Coiled carbon nanotubes (CCNTs) were obtained as main products in large quantities at temperature 1100 degrees C.

A new procedure for the preparation of amorphous Ni-Co-B nanoparticles is reported, with a detailed investigation of their morphology by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, as well as their magnetic properties. Many factors, such as chemical composition, anisotropy, size and shape of the particles, were controlled through chemical synthesis, resulting in the control of morphological and magnetic properties of the nanoparticles. Controlling pH values with ethylenediamine and using sodium dodecyl sulfate surfactant lowered the size of the nanoparticles to below 10 nm. Such a small structure and chemical disorder in nanocrystalline materials lead to magnetic properties that are different from those in their bulk-sized counterparts. The obtained nanoparticles can be used for different purposes, from pharmaceutical applications to implementations in different materials technology. The focus of this research is the synthesis of Ni-Co-B nanoparticles in a new way and studying the reaction of Ni-Co-B nanoparticles with Mg and B precursors and their effect on MgB2 properties. New nanostructures are formed in the reaction of Ni-Co-B nanoparticles with Mg: Mg2Ni, Co2Mg and possibly Mg2Co.

This paper presents results from a study on the production of Finnish prosody. The effect of word order and the tonal shape in the production of Finnish prosody was studied as produced by 8 native Finnish speakers. Predictions formulated with regard to results from an earlier study pertaining to the perception of promi- nence were tested. These predictions had to do with the tonal shape of the utterances in the form of a flat hat pattern and the effect of word order on the so called top-line declination within an adver- bial phrase in the utterances. The results from the experiment give support to the following claims: the temporal domain of prosodic focus is the whole utterance, word order reversal from unmarked to marked has an effect on the production of prosody, and the pro- duction of the tonal aspects of focus in Finnish follows a basic flat hat pattern. That is the prominence of a word can be produced by an f 0 rise or a fall, depending on the location of the word in an utterance. The basic accentual shape of a Finnish word is then not a pointed rise/fall hat shape as claimed before since it can vary depending on the syllable structure and the position within an ut- terance.

The basic method of JIc calculation using a single specimen is discussed. Dokouipil's approach for evaluating the JIc value is extended further and the effect of prestrain on rolled mild steel with significant inclusions is studied using this modified approach. Although this method does not give an accurate value of JIc, it is quite effective for a comparative study. While the fracture toughness of annealed and 7% prestrained materials are about the same, the fracture toughness of 3% prestrained material is significantly lower.

Generation of raw materials for dry powder inhalers by different size reduction methods can be expected to influence physical and chemical properties of the powders. This can cause differences in particle size, size distribution, shape, crystalline properties, surface texture and energy. These physical properties of powders influence the behaviour of particles before and after inhalation. Materials with an amorphous surface have different surface energy compared to materials with crystalline surface. This can affect the adhesion and cohesion of particles. Changes in the surface nature of the drug particles results in a change in product performance. By stabilization of the raw materials the amorphous surfaces are converted into crystalline surfaces. The primary aim of the study was to investigate the influence of the surface properties of the inhalation particles on the quality of the product. The quality of the inhalation product is evaluated by measuring the fine particle dose (FPD). FDP is the total dose of particles with aerodynamic diameters smaller than 5,0 μm. The secondary aim of this study was to achieve the target level of the FPD and the stability of the FPD. This study was also used to evaluate the importance of the stabilization of the inhalation powders. The study included manufacturing and analysing drug substance 200 μg/dose inhalation powder batches using non-stabilized or stabilized raw materials. The inhaler formulation consisted of micronized drug substance, lactose <100μm and micronized lactose <10μm. The inhaler device was Easyhaler®. Stabilization of the raw materials was done in different relative humidity, temperature and time. Surface properties of the raw materials were studied by dynamic vapour sorption, scanning electron microscopy and three-point nitrogen adsorption technique. Particle size was studied by laser diffraction particle size analyzer. Aerodynamic particle size distribution from inhalers was measured by new generation impactor. Stabilization of all three raw materials was successful. A clear difference between nonstabilized and stabilized raw materials was achieved for drug substance and lactose <10μm. However for lactose <100μm the difference wasn’t as clear as wanted. The surface of the non-stabilized drug substance was more irregular and the particles had more roughness on the surface compared to the stabilized drug substances particles surface. The surface of the stabilized drug particles was more regular and smoother than non-stabilized. Even though a good difference between stabilized and non-stabilized raw materials was achieved, a clear evidence of the effect of the surface properties of the inhalation particles on the quality of the product was not observed. Stabilization of the raw materials didn’t lead to a higher FPD. Possible explanations for the unexpected result might be too rough conditions in the stabilization of the drug substance or smaller than wanted difference in the degree of stabilization of the main component of the product <100μm. Despite positive effects on the quality of the product were not seen there appears to be some evidence that stabilized drug substance results in smaller particle size of dry powder inhalers.

The effect of thermal cycling on the load-controlled tension-tension fatigue behavior of a Ni-Ti-Fe shape memory alloy (SMA) at room temperature was studied. Considerable strain accumulation was observed to occur in this alloy under both quasi-static and cyclic loading conditions. Though, in all cases, steady-state is reached within the first 50-100 cycles, the accumulated steady-state strain, epsilon(p.ss), is much smaller in thermally cycled alloy. As a result, the fatigue performance of them was found to be significantly enhanced vis-a-vis the as-solutionized alloy. Furthermore, under load-controlled conditions, the fatigue life of Ni-Ti-Fe alloys was found to be exclusively dependent on epsilon(p.ss). Observations made by profilometry and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) indicate that the 200-500% enhancement in fatigue life of thermally cycled alloy is due to the homogeneous distribution of the accumulated fatigue strain. This paper presents methodologies for fracture analysis of concrete structural components with and without considering tension softening effect. Stress intensity factor (SIF) is computed by using analytical approach and finite element analysis. In the analytical approach, SW accounting for tension softening effect has been obtained as the difference of SIP obtained using linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) principles and SIP due to closing pressure. Superposition principle has been used by accounting for non-linearity in incremental form. SW due to crack closing force applied on the effective crack face inside the process zone has been computed using Green's function approach. In finite element analysis, the domain integral method has been used for computation of SIR The domain integral method is used to calculate the strain energy release rate and SIF when a crack grows. Numerical studies have been conducted on notched 3-point bending concrete specimen with and without considering the cohesive stresses. It is observed from the studies that SW obtained from the finite element analysis with and without considering the cohesive stresses is in good agreement with the corresponding analytical value. The effect of cohesive stress on SW decreases with increase of crack length. Further, studies have been conducted on geometrically similar structures and observed that (i) the effect of cohesive stress on SW is significant with increase of load for a particular crack length and (iii) SW values decreases with increase of tensile strength for a particular crack length and load.

We have calculated the binding energy of a hydrogenic donor in a quantum well with potential shape proportional to \z\(2/3) as a function of the width of the quantum well and the barrier height under an applied uniform magnetic field along the a axis. As the well width decreases, the binding energy increases initially up to a critical well width (which is nearly the same for all magnetic fields) at which there is a turnover. The results are qualitatively similar to those of a hydrogenic donor in a rectangular well. We have also calculated [rho(2)](1/2) and [z(2)](1/2) for the donor electron. [rho(2)](1/2) is found to be strongly dependent on the magnetic field for a given well width and weakly dependent on the well width and the barrier height, for a given value of magnetic field [z(2)](1/2) is weakly dependent on the applied magnetic field. The probability of finding the donor electron inside the well shows a rapid decrease as the well width is reduced at nearly the well width at which the binding energy shows a maximum.

Properties of cast aluminium matrix composites are greatly influenced by the nature of distribution of reinforcing phase in the matrix and matrix microstructural length scales, such as grain size, dendrite arm spacing, size and morphology of secondary matrix phases, etc. Earlier workers have shown that SIC reinforcements can act as heterogeneous nucleation sites for Si during solidification of Al-Si-SiC composites. The present study aims at a quantitative understanding of the effect of SiC reinforcements on secondary matrix phases, namely eutectic Si, during solidification of A356 Al-SiC composites. Effect of volume fraction of SiC particulate on size and shape of eutectic Si has been studied at different cooling rates. Results indicate that an increase in SiC volume fraction leads to a reduction in the size of eutectic Si and also changes its morphology from needle-like to equiaxed. This is attributed to the heterogeneous nucleation of eutectic Si on SiC particles. However, SiC particles are found to have negligible influence on DAS. Under all the solidification conditions studied in the present investigation, SiC particles are found to be rejected by the growing dendrites. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

We examine the symmetry-breaking transitions in equilibrium shapes of coherent precipitates in two-dimensional (2-D) systems under a plane-strain condition with the principal misfit strain components epsilon(xx)*. and epsilon(yy)*. For systems with cubic elastic moduli, we first show all the shape transitions associated with different values of t = epsilon(yy)*/epsilon(xx)*. We also characterize each of these transitions, by studying its dependence on elastic anisotropy and inhomogeneity. For systems with dilatational misfit (t = 1) and those with pure shear misfit (t = -1), the transition is from an equiaxed shape to an elongated shape, resulting in a break in rotational symmetry. For systems with nondilatational misfit (-1 < t < 1; t not equal 0), the transition involves a break in mirror symmetries normal to the x- and y-axes. The transition is continuous in all cases, except when 0 < t < 1. For systems which allow an invariant line (-1 less than or equal to t < 0), the critical size increases with an increase in the particle stiffness. However, for systems which do not allow an invariant line (0 < t less than or equal to 1), the critical size first decreases, reaches a minimum, and then starts increasing with increasing particle stiffness; moreover, the transition is also forbidden when the particle stiffness is greater than a critical value.
