How do capuchin monkeys learn to use stones to crack open nuts? Perception-action theory posits that individuals explore producing varying spatial and force relations among objects and surfaces, thereby learning about affordances of such relations and how to produce them. Such learning supports the discovery of tool use. We present longitudinal developmental data from semifree-ranging tufted capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) to evaluate predictions arising from Perception-action theory linking manipulative development and the onset of tool-using. Percussive actions bringing an object into contact with a surface appeared within the first year of life. Most infants readily struck nuts and other objects against stones or other surfaces from 6 months of age, but percussive actions alone were not sufficient to produce nut-cracking sequences. Placing the nut on the anvil surface and then releasing it, so that it could be struck with a stone, was the last element necessary for nut-cracking to appear in capuchins. Young chimpanzees may face a different challenge in learning to crack nuts: they readily place objects on surfaces and release them, but rarely vigorously strike objects against surfaces or other objects. Thus the challenges facing the two species in developing the same behavior (nut-cracking using a stone hammer and an anvil) may be quite different. Capuchins must inhibit a strong bias to hold nuts so that they can release them; chimpanzees must generate a percussive action rather than a gentle placing action. Generating the right actions may be as challenging as achieving the right sequence of actions in both species. Our analysis suggests a new direction for studies of social influence on young primates learning sequences of actions involving manipulation of objects in relation to surfaces.

Patterns of geographic variation of the canid Cerdocyon thous have historically been obscured by its remarkable intraspecific morphological variability. The observed distribution is highly associated with phytophysiognomy, a feature considered highly dynamic along geological time. In the present study, we tested whether vegetation distribution during the Holocene Glacial Maximum of South America (HGM) explains the patterns of morphological variation within Cerdocyon thous. The species was divided in groups according to paleohabitats that could support their presence during the HGM, and then tested for differences in skull morphometrics. The results obtained demonstrate that the climatic changes during the HGM influenced the population structure of this species, resulting in the establishment of geographical groups with different degrees of morphological cohesion. Higher morphological cohesion found in the Northern group might be explained by the marked discontinuity between its geographical range and the rest of the species`distribution. The Eastern and Southern morphological divergence is less striking and, although this could be related to past vegetation distribution, the disappearance of those barriers leads to a population structure that could be slowly breaking down. In this paper we address the "skull-stripping" problem in 3D MR images. We propose a new method that employs an efficient and unique histogram analysis. A fundamental component of this analysis is an algorithm for partitioning a histogram based on the position of the maximum deviation from a Gaussian fit. In our experiments we use a comprehensive image database, including both synthetic and real MRI. and compare our method with other two well-known methods, namely BSE and BET. For all datasets we achieved superior results. Our method is also highly independent of parameter tuning and very robust across considerable variations of noise ratio.

The cranial anatomy of Dinilysia patagonica, a terrestrial snake from the Upper Cretaceous of Argentina, is redescribed and illustrated, based on high-resolution X-ray computed tomography and better preparations made on previously known specimens, including the holotype. Previously unreported characters reinforce the intriguing mosaic nature of the skull of Dinilysia, with a suite of plesiomorphic and apomorphic characters with respect to extant snakes. Newly recognized plesiomorphies are the absence of the medial vertical flange of the nasal, lateral position of the prefrontal, lizard-like contact between vomer and palatine, floor of the recessus scalae tympani formed by the basioccipital, posterolateral corners of the basisphenoid strongly ventrolaterally projected, and absence of a medial parietal pillar separating the telencephalon and mesencephalon, amongst others. We also reinterpreted the structures forming the otic region of Dinilysia, confirming the presence of a crista circumfenestralis, which represents an important derived ophidian synapomorphy. Both plesiomorphic and apomorphic traits of Dinilysia are treated in detail and illustrated accordingly. Results of a phylogenetic analysis support a basal position of Dinilysia, as the sister-taxon to all extant snakes. The fossil taxa Yurlunggur, Haasiophis, Eupodophis, Pachyrhachis, and Wonambi appear as derived snakes nested within the extant clade Alethinophidia, as stem-taxa to the crown-clade Macrostomata. The hypothesis of a sister-group relationship between Dinilysia and Najash rionegrina, as suggested by some authors, is rejected by the results of our analysis.

In the present study, pterosaur skull constructions were analysed using a combined approach of finite element analysis (FEA), static investigations as well as applying classical beam theory and lever mechanics. The study concentrates on the operating regime „bite“, where loads are distributed via the dentition or a keratinous rhamphotheca into the skull during jaw occlusion. As a first step, pterosaur tooth constructions were analysed. The different morphologies of the tooth construction determine specific operational ranges, in which the teeth perform best (= greatest resistance against failure). The incomplete enamel-covering of the pterosaur tooth constructions thereby leads to a reduction of strain and stress and to a greater lateral elasticity than for a complete enamel cover. This permits the development of high and lateral compressed tooth constructions. Further stress-absorption occurs in the periodontal membrane, although its mechanical properties can not be clarified unambiguously. A three-dimensionally preserved skull of Anhanguera was chosen as a case-study for the investigation of the skull constructions. CT-scans were made to get information about the internal architecture, supplemented by thin-sections of a rostrum of a second Anhanguera specimen. These showed that the rostrum can be approximated as a double-walled triangular tube with a large central vacuity and an average wall-thickness of the bony layers of about 1 mm. On base of the CT-scans, a stereolithography of the skull of Anhanguera was made on which the jaw adductor and abductor muscles were modelled, permitting to determine muscular forces. The values were used for the lever mechanics, cantilever and space frame analysis. These studies and the FEA show, that the jaw reaction forces are critical for the stability of the skull construction. The large jugal area ventral to the orbita and the inclined occipital region act as buttresses against these loads. In contrast to the orbitotemporal region which is subject to varying loading conditions, the pattern in the rostrum is less complex. Here, mainly bending in dorsal direction and torsion occur. The hollow rostrum leads to a reduction of weight of the skull and to a high bending and torsional resistance. Similar to the Anhanguera skull construction, the skulls of those pterosaur taxa were analysed, from which enough skull material is know to permit a reliable reconstruction. Furthermore, FEA were made from five selected taxa. The comparison of the biomechanical behaviour of the different skull constructions results in major transformational processes: elongation of rostra, inclination of the occipital region, variation of tooth morphology, reduction of the dentition and replacement of teeth by a keratinous hook or rhamphotheca, fusion of naris and antorbital fenestra, and the development of bony and soft-tissue crests. These processes are discussed for their biomechanical effects during bite. Certain optional operational ranges for feeding are assigned to the different skull constructions and previous hypotheses (e.g. skimming) are verified. Using the principle of economisation, these processes help to establish irreversible transformations and to define possible evolutionary pathways. The resulting constructional levels and the structural variations within these levels are interpreted in light of a greater feeding efficiency and reduction of bony mass combined with an increased stability against the various loads. The biomechanical conclusive pathways are used for comparison and verification of recent hypothesis of the phylogenetic systematics of pterosaurs.

Apart from one article published by Rabl and Sigrist in 1992 (Rechtsmedizin 2:156-158), there are no further reports on secondary skull fractures in shots from captive bolt guns. Up to now, the pertinent literature places particular emphasis on the absence of indirect lesions away from the impact point, when dealing with the wounding capacity of slaughterer's guns. The recent observation of two suicidal head injuries accompanied by skull fractures far away from the bolt's path gave occasion to experimental studies using simulants (glycerin soap, balls from gelatin) and skull brain models. As far as ballistic soap was concerned, the dimensions of the bolt's channel were assessed by multi-slice computed tomography before cutting the blocks open. The test shots to gelatin balls and to skull-brain models were documented by means of a high-speed motion camera. As expected, the typical temporary cavity effect of bullets fired from conventional guns could not be observed when captive bolt stunners were discharged. Nevertheless, the visualized transfer of kinetic energy justifies the assumption that the secondary fractures seen in thin parts of the skull were caused by a hydraulic burst effect.

Despite the increased use of intracranial neuromonitoring during experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), coordinates for probe placement in rabbits are lacking. This study evaluates the safety and reliability of using outer skull landmarks to identify locations for placement of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and intraparenchymal intracranial pressure (ICP) probes. Experimental SAH was performed in 17 rabbits using an extracranial-intracranial shunt model. ICP probes were placed in the frontal lobe and compared to measurements recorded from the olfactory bulb. CBF probes were placed in various locations in the frontal cortex anterior to the coronary suture. Insertion depth, relation to the ventricular system, and ideal placement location were determined by post-mortem examination. ICP recordings at the time of SAH from the frontal lobe did not differ significantly from those obtained from the right olfactory bulb. Ideal coordinates for intraparenchymal CBF probes in the left and right frontal lobe were found to be located 4.6±0.9 and 4.5±1.2 anterior to the bregma, 4.7±0.7mm and 4.7±0.5mm parasagittal, and at depths of 4±0.5mm and 3.9±0.5mm, respectively. The results demonstrate that the presented coordinates based on skull landmarks allow reliable placement of intraparenchymal ICP and CBF probes in rabbit brains without the use of a stereotactic frame.

Turtles experience numerous modifications in the morphological, physiological, and mechanical characteristics of their shells through ontogeny. Although a general picture is available of the nature of these modifications, few quantitative studies have been conducted on changes in turtle shell shape through ontogeny, and none on changes in strength or rigidity. This study investigates the morphological and mechanical changes that juvenile Trachemys scripta elegans undergo as they increase in size. Morphology and shell rigidity were quantified in a sample of 36 alcohol-preserved juvenile Trachemys scripta elegans. Morphometric information was used to create finite element models of all specimens. These models were used to assess the mechanical behavior of the shells under various loading conditions. Overall, we find that turtles experience complementary changes in size, shape, deformability, and relative strength as they grow. As turtles age their shells become larger, more elongate, relatively flatter, and more rigid. These changes are associated with decreases in relative (size independent) strength, even though the shells of larger turtles are stronger in an absolute sense. Decreased deformability is primarily due to changes in the size of the animals. Residual variation in deformability cannot be explained by changes in shell shape. This variation is more likely due to changes in the degree of connectedness of the skeletal elements in the turtle's shells, along with changes in the thickness and degree of mineralization of shell bone. We suggest that the mechanical implications of shell size, shape, and deformability may have a large impact on survivorship and development in members of this species as they mature. J.
