Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and nitrogen adsorption techniques were used to study the temperature and time structural evolution of the nanoporosity in silica xerogels prepared from acid- and ultrasound-catalyzed hydrolysis of tetraetboxysilane (TEOS). Silica xerogels present a structure of nanopores of fully random shape, size, and distribution, which can be described by an exponential correlation function gamma(r) = exp (-r/a), where a is the correlation distance, as predicted by the Debye, Anderson, and Brumberger (DAB) model. The mean pore size was evaluated as about 1.25 nm from SAXS and about 1.9 nm from nitrogen adsorption. The nanopore elimination in TEOS sonohydrolysis-derived silica xerogels is readily accelerated at temperatures around 900 degrees C probably by the action of a viscous flow mechanism. The nanopore elimination process takes place in such a way that the pore volume fraction and the specific surface are reduced while the mean pore size remains constant. Glassy carbon can be manufactured practically without pores, named Monolithic Vitreous Carbon (MVC) or presenting up to 98% in transport pore volume, foam form, denominated Reticulated Vitreous Carbon (RVC). The glassy carbon processing is affected by some processing parameters, among them it can be cited the resin viscosity. The present work involves the optimization of RVC manufacture by monitoring the polyurethane (PU) foam impregnation with furfuryl alcohol resin with different viscosity values, which were obtained by dilution of the resin with different amounts of furfuryl alcohol. The resin samples used in the PU impregnation were characterized by thermal and rheological analyses. These results were correlated with scanning electron microscopy observations and compression test results of the impregnated polyurethane foam. The results show that the rheological behavior of the resin has significant influence on the polymerization step, affecting the homogeneity of impregnated foam and, consequently, its final properties, mainly the mechanical one. The impregnated foam prepared with the furfuryl alcohol resin diluted with 10% of furfuryl alcohol (eta = 11.4 Pa s) showed higher compression values (0.26 MPa). (c) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Low density silica sonogels were prepared from acid sonohydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane. Wet gels were studied by small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The DSC tests were carried out under a heating rate of 2 degrees C/min from -120 degrees C up to 30 degrees C. Aerogels were obtained by CO(2) supercritical extraction and characterized by nitrogen adsorption and SAXS. The DSC thermogram displays two distinct endothermic peaks. The first, a broad peak extending from about -80 degrees C up to practically 0 degrees C, was associated to the melting of ice nanocrystals with a crystal size distribution with pore diameter ranging from 1 or 2 nm up to about 60 nm, as estimated from Thomson's equation. The second, a sharp peak with onset temperature close to 0 degrees C, was attributed to the melting of macroscopic crystals. The DSC incremental nanopore volume distribution is in reasonable agreement with the incremental pore volume distribution of the aerogel as determined from nitrogen adsorption. No macroporosity was detected by nitrogen adsorption, probably because the adsorption method applies stress on the sample during measurement, leading to a underestimation of pore volume, or because often positive curvature of the solid surface is in aerogels, making the nitrogen condensation more difficult. According to the SAXS results, the solid network of the wet gels behaves as a mass fractal structure with mass fractal dimension D=2.20 +/- 0.01 in a characteristic length scale below xi=7.9 +/- 0.1 nm. The mass fractal characteristics of the wet gels have also been probed from DSC data by means of an earlier applied modeling for generation of a mass fractal from the incremental pore volume distribution curves. The results are shown to be in interesting agreement with the results from SAXS.

About similar to 2.1 x 10(-3) Mol SiO2 cm(-3) and similar to 88%-volume liquid-phase silica wet gels were prepared from oxalic-acid-catalyzed tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) sonohydrolysis. Aerogels were obtained by supercritical CO2 extraction. The samples were analyzed by thermogravimetry, small-angle X-ray scattering and nitrogen adsorption. Wet gels can be described as mass fractal structures with fractal dimension D similar to 1.94 and structural characteristic length zeta changing between similar to 3.3 to similar to 3.0 nm in the studied range of the catalyst concentration. A fraction of the porosity is apparently eliminated in the supercritical process. The values of the BET specific surface S-BET, the total pore volume V-p and the mean pore size l(p) of the aerogels were found to change almost randomly around the mean values S-BET = 874 m(2) g(-1), V-p = 0.961 cm(3) g(-1) and l(p) = 4.4 nm with catalyst concentration variation. These values were not substantially different from those from an equivalent HCl-catalyzed aerogel. (c) 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

The crytallite and pore-size evolution during isothermal sintering (400 ≤ T ≤ 700°C) of SnO2 xerogels was studied by X-ray line broadening and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. The experimental results show a strong anisotropy of crystallite growth between [110] and [101] directions. The preferential growth at [101] is followed by an increase in the mean pore size, reduction of the specific surface area and invariance of total pore volume. This behaviour is typical of grain coalescence sintering. The kinetic analysis of experimental results suggests that the crystallite coalescence at [101] is governed by lattice diffusion. The strong anisotropy of the growth causes pore-size distribution broadening, hindering the macroscopic shrinkage of the compact during sintering. © 1996 Chapman & Hall.

Structural changes induced by ultrasound during the aging of the aluminum monohydroxide (boehmite) were studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and nitrogen adsorption. The BET surface area and the pore volume of the ultrasound stimulated hydroxide (HU) are about 40% less than those of the non-stimulated one (HS). The mean pore size practically does not change, while the mean crystallite size (L) is about 25% greater in the HU system. The increase of L alone is not enough to account for the surface area diminution, suggesting that the sonication also induces compaction by elimination of some porosity. The sonication of the precursor hydroxide does not seem to play an apparent role in the structural properties of the resulting calcinated γ-alumina. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Supercritical drying (SCD) and hydrophobic ambient pressure drying (APD) aerogels were prepared from hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane in solutions of poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (P123) in the range of composition below the threshold for the ordered mesoporous silica precipitation. APD was carried out after silylation of wet gels with trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) or hexamethyldisilazane (HMDZ). The samples were analyzed by small-angle X-ray scattering and nitrogen adsorption. Wet gels are formed by mass-fractal domains, with fractal dimension close to 2, and larger pores superposing the pores belonging to the fractal structure in case of high P123 concentrations. Aerogels exhibit smaller-sized mass-fractal domains with larger mass-fractal dimension accounting for some porosity elimination on drying. The pore volume of the aerogels increases significantly with the P123 amount and it is even larger in the APD aerogels than in the SCD aerogels. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The unique properties of ceramic foams enable their use in a variety of applications. This work investigated the effects of different parameters on the production of zirconia ceramic foam using the sol-gel process associated with liquid foam templates. Evaluation was made of the influence of the thermal treatment temperature on the porous and crystalline characteristics of foams manufactured using different amounts of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) surfactant. A maximum pore volume, with high porosity (94%) and a bimodal pore size distribution, was observed for the ceramic foam produced with 10% SDS. Macropores, with an average size of around 30 μm, were obtained irrespective of the SDS amount, while the average size of the supermesopores increased systematically as the SDS amount was increased up to 10%, after which it decreased. X-ray diffraction analyses showed that the sample treated at 500 °C was amorphous, while crystallization into a tetragonal metastable phase occurred at 600 °C due to the presence of sulfate groups in the zirconia structure. At 800 and 1000 °C the monoclinic phase was observed, which is thermodynamically stable at these temperatures. © 2013 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.
