Films containing different volumes of latex of natural rubber (NR) in a fixed mass of poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) powder were fabricated by compressing under annealing a mixture of both materials without using any solvent. This is an important issue keeping in mind that these films have to be used in the future as biomaterials in different applications once the solvents that are used to dissolve the PVDF become toxic to human. The films with different percentage of latex in PVDF were characterized using microRaman scattering and Fourier transform infrared absorption (FTIR) spectroscopies, thermomechanical techniques using thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamical-mechanical analysis (DMA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the latex of NR and PVDF do not interact chemically, leading to the formation of a polymeric blend with high thermal stability and mechanical properties suitable for applications involving bone (prostheses, for instance). Besides, the results recorded using the micro-Raman technique revealed that for a fixed amount of PVDF the higher the amount of latex in the blend, the better the miscibility between both materials. Micronozzles with piezoelectric actuator were fabricated and investigated. The micronozzles were fabricated in glass substrates using a powder-blasting technique, and the actuator is a bimorph structure made from a piezoelectric polymer. The actuator was located at the nozzle outlet, and was driven in an oscillating mode by applying an alternating voltage across the actuator electrodes. With a pressure difference between inlet and outlet, the gas flow rate through the device was increased. This effect was quantified, and compared to a similar micronozzle with no actuator. The increase in the flow rate was defined as the gas flow through the micronozzle with actuator oscillating minus the gas flow without actuator, was found to depend on the inlet pressure, the pressure ratio, and the nozzle throat diameter. Ferroelectric ceramic particles based on lead titanate zirconate (PZT) were dispersed in a polymer matrix based on castor oil. After the poling process, the pyroelectric activity of this composite was measured using a direct method in which a linear heating rate was applied to the pre-poled samples. The pyroelectric coefficient at 343 K is comparable with that of a PZT-poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composite and significantly higher than that of PVDF. © 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

The study of the stable and the metastable ferroelectric polarization of poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, was performed using two successive equal sign ramp voltages, mediated by a short-circuit period. Rates from 10 V/s up to 0.7 MV/s were used. Results showed that they follow different formation kinetics; that the stable part decreases for higher ramp voltage rates and its apparent coercive field increases.

The ferroelectric and the dielectric behaviors of binary blends formed by an equi-molar Poly(vinylidene fluoride trifluoroethylene) copolymer [P(VDF-TrFE)] and Poly(methyl methacrylate) [PMMA] were investigated, for several PMMA compositions. For 40 wt.% or more PMMA contents, the blends are completely amorphous. Below this value, they crystallize in the usual Cm2m polar structure of P(VDF-TrFE). The ferroelectric switching characteristics and the dielectric response of the blends demonstrate the formation of dynamically stable ferroelectric domains. Moreover, the blended films are highly transparent in the optical region. Therefore, thin films of these binary blends are good candidates as host materials for nonlinear optical applications.

Composite films made of lead zirconate titanate ceramic particles coated with polyaniline and poly(vinylidene fluoride) - PZT-PAni/PVDF were produced by hot pressing the powder mixtures in the desired ceramic volume fraction. The ceramic particles were coated during the polyaniline synthesis and the conductivity of the conductor polymer was controlled by different degrees of protonation. Composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ac and dc electrical measurements, the longitudinal d33 piezo coefficient and the photopyroelectric response. Results showed that the presence of PAni increased the dielectric permittivity of the composite and allowed better efficiency in the poling process, which increased the piezo- and pyroelectric activities of the composite film and reduced both the poling time and the poling electric field. The thermal sensing of the material was also analyzed, showing that this composite can be used as pyroelectric sensor. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The development of polymeric blends to be used as matrices for bone regeneration is a hot topic nowadays. In this article we report on the blends composed by corn starch and poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, or poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene), P(VDF-TrFE), to obtain biocompatible materials. Blends were produced by compressing/annealing and chemically/structurally characterized by micro-Raman scattering and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) absorption spectroscopies, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), besides in vivo study to evaluate the tissue response. Vibrational spectroscopy reveals no chemical interaction between the polymers and starch, absence of material degradation due to compressing/annealing process or organism implantation, and maintenance of a and ferroelectric crystalline phases of PVDF and P(VDF-TrFE), respectively. As a consequence of absence of interaction between polymers and starch, it was possible to identify by SEM each material, with starch acting as filler. Elastic modulus (E') obtained from DMA measurement, independent of the material proportion used in blends, reaches values close to those of cancellous bone. Finally, the in vivo study in animals shows that the blends, regardless of the composition, were tolerated by cancellous bone. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Monitoring non-ionizing radiant energy is increasingly demanded for many applications such as automobile, biomedical and security system. Thermal type infrared (IR) sensors can operate at room temperature and pyroelectric materials have high sensitivity and accuracy for that application. Working as thermal transducer pyroelectric sensor converts the non-quantified thermal flux into the output measurable quantity of electrical charge, voltage or current. In the present study the composite made of poly(vinylidene fluoride) -PVDF and lead zirconate titanate (PZT) partially recovered with polyaniline (PAni) conductor polymer has been used as sensor element. The pyroelectric coefficient p(T) was obtained by measuring the pyroelectric reversible current, i.e., measuring the thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) after removing all irreversible contribution to the current such as injected charge during polarization of the sample. To analyze the sensing property of the pyroelectric material, the sensor is irradiated by a high power light source (halogen lamp of 250 W) that is chopped providing a modulated radiation. A device assembled in the laboratory is used to change the light intensity sensor, an aluminum strip having openings with diameters ranging from 1 to 10 mm incremented by one millimeter. The sensor element is assembled between two electrodes while its frontal surface is painted black ink to maximize the light absorption. The signal from the sensor is measured by a Lock-In amplifier model SR530 -Stanford Research Systems. The behavior of the output voltage for an input power at several frequencies for PZT-PAni/PVDF (30/ 70 vol%) composite follows the inverse power law (1/ f) and the linearity can be observed in the frequency range used.
