Lithium ion conducting polymer electrolytes based on polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA-OH) complexed with salt Li2SO4 and different weight percent ratios of PEG(400) plasticizer have been prepared by solution cast technique using deionized water as solvent. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the thermal stability of the materials depended on the plasticizer content. The FTIR study confirmed the polymer salt complex formation. The modulus spectra indicated the non-Debye nature of the material; a dominant relaxation process is visible being associated with the dynamic glass transition, relaxation-a. The maximum of each peak is shifted to higher frequencies as the plasticizer increases due to an enhancement of dipolar mobility in the origin of cooperative motions. A power law frequency dependence of the real part of the electrical conductivity is observed, which is characteristic of the effects of ion-ion and/or ion-chain correlations in ion motion. This variation is well fitted to a Jonscher's expression.

The biodegradability properties of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) and modified adipate-starch (AS) blends, using Edenol-3203 (E) as a starch plasticizer, were investigated in laboratory by burial tests of the samples in previously analyzed agricultural soil. The biodegradation process was carried out using the respirometric test according to ASTM D 5988-96, and the mineralization was followed by both variables such as carbon dioxide evolution and mass loss. The results indicated that the presence of AS-E accelerated the biodegradation rate as expected.

Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPE) based on agar and containing LiClO4 have been prepared, characterized and applied to electrochromic devices. The ionic conductivity revealed the best result of 6.5 x 10(-5) S/cm for the sample with 17 wt.% of LiClO4, which increased to 5.4 x 10(-4) S/cm at 72 degrees C. TheGPE have been used in electrochromic devices (ECD) with K-glass/WO3/GPE/CeO2-TiO2/K-glass configuration. The ECD changed transmittance values up to 30% between the colored and transparent states. The charge density measurements revealed an increase of 5.5 to 7.5 mC/cm(2) from the first to 500th cycles and then a decrease to 4.4 mC/cm(2) during the next 4500 cycles. Coloration efficiency (eta) of 25 cm(2)/C was obtained.

Thermoplastic starch (TPS) from industrial non-modified corn starch was obtained and reinforced with natural strands. The influence of the reinforcement on physical-chemical properties of the composites obtained by melt processing has been analyzed. For this purpose, composites reinforced with different amounts of either sisal or hemp strands have been prepared and evaluated in terms of crystallinity, water sorption, thermal and mechanical properties. The results showed that the incorporation of sisal or hemp strands caused an increase in the glass transition temperature (T-g) of the TPS as determined by DMTA. The reinforcement also increased the stiffness of the material, as reflected in both the storage modulus and the Young's modulus. Intrinsic mechanical properties of the reinforcing fibers showed a lower effect on the final mechanical properties of the materials than their homogeneity and distribution within the matrix. Additionally, the addition of a natural latex plasticizer to the composite decreased the water absorption kinetics without affecting significantly the thermal and mechanical properties of the material. In this work poly(hydroxybutyrate/poly(vinyl butyral)- co-(vinyl alcohol)-co(vinyl acetate) (or ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber) blends were prepared by conventional processing techniques (extrusion and injection moulding). A droplet type morphology was obtained for P(3HB)/PVB blends whereas P(3HB)/EPDM blends presented some extent of co-continuous morphology. In addition, rubbery domains were much smaller in the case of PVB. These differences in morphology are discussed taking into account solubility parameters and rheological behaviours of each component. For both blends, the increase of elastomer ratio led to a decrease of Young's modulus but an increase in elongation at break and impact strength. The latter increased more in the case of P(3HB)/EPDM blends although the rubbery domains were larger. These results are explained in the light of the glass transition of the rubber and the presence of plasticizer in the case of PVB. The addition of elastomer also resulted in an increase of P(3HB) biodegradation rate, especially in the case of EPDM. It is assumed that, in this case, the size and morphology of the rubbery domains induce a geometrical modification of the erosion front which leads to an increase of the interface between P(3HB) phase and the degradation medium and consequently to an apparently faster biodegradation kinetics of PHB/rubber blends. Myofibril proteins have excellent filmogenic properties. The objective of this article was to study the effect of the thermal treatment, of the pH and of the plasticizer concentration (Cp) of the filmogenic solution (FS), using over some physical properties of edible films, using a surface and response methodology (SRM). Films were made of lyophilized myofibril proteins (LMP) extracted from bovine muscle, employing the technique of solubility obtained from diluted saline solutions. The films were elaborated from FS containing 1 g of LMP/100g of FS and from Cp of 50 g to 79 g of glycerin/100 g of LMP. The LMP was dispersed in water under moderate agitation, and the pH was kept at 2.5-3.5 with the use of acetic acid. The FS were submitted to thermal treatment at different temperatures for 45 minutes. Films were dried in ventilated oven at 37 degrees C/18hr, conditioned at 75% of relative humidity at 25 degrees C/48 hr before analysis of: mechanical properties by puncture test; apparent opacity by spectrophotometer; solubility by immersion in water; and water vapor permeability by the gravimetric method. In general, films showed good appearance, translucent, easily handled and touchable, except for the films formed with pH 2.5 and at a low temperature (35 degrees C), with a medium thickness of 0.400 +/- 0.005 mm. The pH of the FS significantly affected all the physical properties under study. The temperature of the thermal treatment of the FS greatly affected the force at the rupture, solubility and water vapor permeability. This treatment can promote intermolecular interactions through the formation of disulphide bonds; however a very intense treatment can reverse this effect by irreversible structural alterations in the proteins. The glycerol concentration affected considerably all the properties under study, with the exception of the apparent opacity. Plasticizer increases the mobility of macromolecules with consequences in all physical properties.
