The real-time refinement calculus is a formal method for the systematic derivation of real-time programs from real-time specifications in a style similar to the non-real-time refinement calculi of Back and Morgan. In this paper we extend the real-time refinement calculus with procedures and provide refinement rules for refining real-time specifications to procedure calls. A real-time specification can include constraints on, not only what outputs are produced, but also when they are produced. The derived programs can also include time constraints oil when certain points in the program must be reached; these are expressed in the form of deadline commands. Such programs are machine independent. An important consequence of the approach taken is that, not only are the specifications machine independent, but the whole refinement process is machine independent. To implement the machine independent code on a target machine one has a separate task of showing that the compiled machine code will reach all its deadlines before they expire. For real-time programs, externally observable input and output variables are essential. These differ from local variables in that their values are observable over the duration of the execution of the program. Hence procedures require input and output parameter mechanisms that are references to the actual parameters so that changes to external inputs are observable within the procedure and changes to output parameters are externally observable. In addition, we allow value and result parameters. These may be auxiliary parameters, which are used for reasoning about the correctness of real-time programs as well as in the expression of timing deadlines, but do not lead to any code being generated for them by a compiler. Various micro-radial compressor configurations were investigated using one-dimensional meanline and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques for use in a micro gas turbine (MGT) domestic combined heat and power (DCHP) application. Blade backsweep, shaft speed, and blade height were varied at a constant pressure ratio. Shaft speeds were limited to 220 000 r/min, to enable the use of a turbocharger bearing platform. Off-design compressor performance was established and used to determine the MGT performance envelope; this in turn was used to assess potential cost and environmental savings in a heat-led DCHP operating scenario within the target market of a detached family home. A low target-stage pressure ratio provided an opportunity to reduce diffusion within the impeller. Critically for DCHP, this produced very regular flow, which improved impeller performance for a wider operating envelope. The best performing impeller was a low-speed, 170 000 r/min, low-backsweep, 15° configuration producing 71.76 per cent stage efficiency at a pressure ratio of 2.20. This produced an MGT design point system efficiency of 14.85 per cent at 993 W, matching prime movers in the latest commercial DCHP units. Cost and CO2 savings were 10.7 per cent and 6.3 per cent, respectively, for annual power demands of 17.4 MWht and 6.1 MWhe compared to a standard condensing boiler (with grid) installation. The maximum cost saving (on design point) was 14.2 per cent for annual power demands of 22.62 MWht and 6.1 MWhe corresponding to an 8.1 per cent CO2 saving. When sizing, maximum savings were found with larger heat demands. When sized, maximum savings could be made by encouraging more electricity export either by reducing household electricity consumption or by increasing machine efficiency.

The focus of this study is development of parallelised version of severely sequential and iterative numerical algorithms based on multi-threaded parallel platform such as a graphics processing unit. This requires design and development of a platform-specific numerical solution that can benefit from the parallel capabilities of the chosen platform. Graphics processing unit was chosen as a parallel platform for design and development of a numerical solution for a specific physical model in non-linear optics. This problem appears in describing ultra-short pulse propagation in bulk transparent media that has recently been subject to several theoretical and numerical studies. The mathematical model describing this phenomenon is a challenging and complex problem and its numerical modeling limited on current modern workstations. Numerical modeling of this problem requires a parallelisation of an essentially serial algorithms and elimination of numerical bottlenecks. The main challenge to overcome is parallelisation of the globally non-local mathematical model. This thesis presents a numerical solution for elimination of numerical bottleneck associated with the non-local nature of the mathematical model. The accuracy and performance of the parallel code is identified by back-to-back testing with a similar serial version.

In the global strategy for preservation genetic resources of farm animals the implementation of information technology is of great importance. In this regards platform independent information tools and approaches for data exchange are needed in order to obtain aggregate values for regions and countries of spreading a separate breed. The current paper presents a XML based solution for data exchange in management genetic resources of farm animals’ small populations. There are specific requirements to the exchanged documents that come from the goal of data analysis. Three main types of documents are distinguished and their XML formats are discussed. DTD and XML Schema for each type are suggested. Some examples of XML documents are given also.

Der Zugang zu Datenbanken über die universelle Abfragesprache SQL stellt für Nicht-Spezialisten eine große Herausforderung dar. Als eine benutzerfreundliche Alternative wurden daher seit den 1970er-Jahren unterschiedliche visuelle Abfragesprachen (Visual Query Languages, kurz VQLs) für klassische PCs erforscht. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, eine generische VQL zu entwickeln und zu erproben, die eine gestenbasierte Exploration von Datenbanken auf Schema- und Instanzdatenebene für mobile Endgeräte, insbesondere Tablets, ermöglicht. Dafür werden verschiedene Darstellungsformen, Abfragestrategien und visuelle Hints für Fremdschlüsselbeziehungen untersucht, die den Benutzer bei der Navigation durch die Daten unterstützen. Im Rahmen einer Anforderungsanalyse erwies sich die Visualisierung der Daten und Beziehungen mittels einer platzsparenden geschachtelten NF2-Darstellung als besonders vorteilhaft. Zur Steuerung der Datenbankexploration wird eine geeignete Gestensprache, bestehend aus Stroke-, Multitouch- und Mid-Air-Gesten, vorgestellt. Das Gesamtkonzept aus Darstellung und Gestensteuerung wurde anhand des im Rahmen dieser Arbeit entwickelten GBXT-Prototyps auf seine reale Umsetzbarkeit hin, als plattformunabhängige Single-Page-Application für verschiedene mobile Endgeräte mittels JavaScript und HTML5/CSS3 untersucht.

Abstract—This paper presents PORBS, a parallelised observation-based slicing tool. The tool itself is written in Java making it platform independent and leverages the build chain of the system being sliced to avoid the need to replicate complex compiler analysis. The target audience of PORBS is software engineers and researchers working with and on tools and techniques for software comprehension, debugging, re-engineering, and maintenance.

With the ever-growing amount of connected sensors (IoT), making sense of sensed data becomes even more important. Pervasive computing is a key enabler for sustainable solutions, prominent examples are smart energy systems and decision support systems. A key feature of pervasive systems is situation awareness which allows a system to thoroughly understand its environment. It is based on external interpretation of data and thus relies on expert knowledge. Due to the distinct nature of situations in different domains and applications, the development of situation aware applications remains a complex process. This thesis is concerned with a general framework for situation awareness which simplifies the development of applications. It is based on the Situation Theory Ontology to provide a foundation for situation modelling which allows knowledge reuse. Concepts of the Situation Theory are mapped to the Context Space Theory which is used for situation reasoning. Situation Spaces in the Context Space are automatically generated with the defined knowledge. For the acquisition of sensor data, the IoT standards O-MI/O-DF are integrated into the framework. These allow a peer-to-peer data exchange between data publisher and the proposed framework and thus a platform independent subscription to sensed data. The framework is then applied for a use case to reduce food waste. The use case validates the applicability of the framework and furthermore serves as a showcase for a pervasive system contributing to the sustainability goals. Leading institutions, e.g. the United Nations, stress the need for a more resource efficient society and acknowledge the capability of ICT systems. The use case scenario is based on a smart neighbourhood in which the system recommends the most efficient use of food items through situation awareness to reduce food waste at consumption stage.

Este trabalho introduz a teoria da instrumentação virtual descrevendo os principais componentes desta. É detalhada a implementação de um instrumento virtual e uma base de dados associada que permitem obter uma estimativa de variáveis ambientais para qualquer ponto do globo e qualquer altura do ano. Este instrumento - Environment simulator – permite fornecer dados ambientais necessários a simulação da radiação solar. Para explicar a implementação da plataforma de apoio introduzem-se noções relativas à radiação solar, à relação entre o planeta Terra e o sol. É considerada a radiação solar espectral bem como os principais componentes óticos atmosféricos que com ela interagem. Apresentam-se formulações e aproximações dos coeficientes de extinção e dispersão na atmosfera que levam ao cálculo da radiação solar espectral direta, difusa e global. Por fim, validam-se os resultados através da comparação com valores registados durante a campanha de observações ALEX2014.

Nesta dissertação descreve-se uma proposta de implementação de uma plataforma de desenvolvimento de Sistemas de Comunicação Aumentativa e Alternativa para programadores, com o objectivo de melhorar a produtividade e diminuir os tempos despendidos na implementação deste tipo de soluções. Esta proposta assenta numa estrutura composta por widgets configuráveis por código e integráveis em novas aplicações, numa filosofia de reaproveitamento de objectos e funcionalidades, permitindo ainda a uniformização da estrutura do código no desenvolvimento de softwares deste tipo. Esta plataforma pretende ainda dar flexibilidade aos programadores, através da possibilidade de introdução de novas funcionalidades e widgets, permitindo também que se testem novas abordagens ao software durante a investigação. A implementação em tecnologias open source independentes da plataforma, permitirá ainda utilizar os objectos deste toolkit em vários sistemas operativos. ABSTRACT: ln this master thesis we describe an implementation proposal for an Augmentative and Alternative Communication Framework for developers, with the objective of improves the productivity and reduces the implementation times for these types of solutions. This proposal is based on a customized widgets structure that can be integrated in new applications, with the purpose of reuse common features of these applications, also allowing standardize the code structure in this kind of software development. This framework intends to provide flexibility to programmers giving them the possibility of introduce new functionalities and widgets, allowing them to test new approaches during research. The implementation based on open-source technologies, platform independent, allows the use of this toolkit in several different operating systems.

Cross-platform development frameworks for mobile applications promise important advantages in cost cuttings and easy maintenance, posing as a very good option for organizations interested in the design of mobile applications for several platforms. Given that platform conventions are especially important for the User eXperience (UX) of mobile applications, the usage of a framework where the same code defines the behavior of the app in different platforms could have a negative impact in the UX. This paper describes a study where two independent teams have designed two different versions of a mobile application, one using a framework that generates Android and iOS versions automatically, and another team using native tools. The alternative versions for each platform have been evaluated with 37 users with a combination of a laboratory usability test and a longitudinal study. The results show that differences are minimal in the Android platform, but in iOS, even if a reasonably good UX can be obtained with the usage of this framework by an UX-conscious design team, a higher level of UX can be obtained directly developing with a native tool.

In recent years, there has been a great increase in the development of wireless technologies and location services. For this reason, numerous projects in the location field, have arisen. In addition, with the appearance of the open Android operating system, wireless technologies are being developed faster than ever. This Project approaches the design and development of a system that combines the technologies of wireless, location and Android with the implementation of an indoor positioning system. As a result, an Android application has been obtained, which detects the position of a phone in a simple and useful way. The application is based on the WIFI manager API of Android. It combines the data stored in a SQL database with the wifi data received at any given time. Afterwards the position of the user is determined with the algorithm that has been implemented. This application is able to obtain the position of any person who is inside a building with Wi-Fi coverage, and display it on the screen of any device with the Android operating system. Besides the estimation of the position, this system displays a map that helps you see in which quadrant of the room are positioned in real time. This system has been designed with a simple interface to allow people without technology knowledge. Finally, several tests and simulations of the system have been carried out to see its operation and accuracy. The performance of the system has been verified in two different places and changes have been made in the Java code to improve its precision and effectiveness. As a result of the several tests, it has been noticed that the placement of the access point (AP) and the configuration of the Wireless network is an important point that should be taken into account to avoid interferences and errors as much as possible, in the estimation of the position. RESUMEN. En los últimos años, se ha producido un incremento en el desarrollo de tecnologías inalámbricas y en servicios de localización y posicionamiento. Por esta razón, han surgido numerosos proyectos relacionados con estas tecnologías. Por otra parte, un punto importante en el desarrollo de estas tecnologías ha sido la aparición del lenguaje Android que ha hecho que estas nuevas tecnologías se implementaran con una mayor rapidez. Este proyecto, se acerca al diseño y desarrollo de un sistema que combina tecnologías inalámbricas, de ubicación y uso de lenguaje Android para el desarrollo de una aplicación de un sistema de posicionamiento en interiores. Como consecuencia de esto se ha obtenido una aplicación Android que detecta la posición de un dispositivo móvil de una manera sencilla e intuititva. La aplicación se basa en la API WIFI de Android, que combina los datos almacenados en una base de datos SQL con los datos recibidos vía Wi-Fi en cualquier momento. A continuación, la posición del usuario se determina con el algoritmo que se ha implementado a lo largo de todo el proyecto utilizando código Android. Esta aplicación es capaz de obtener la posición de cualquier persona que se encuentra dentro de un edificio con cobertura Wi-Fi, mostrando por pantalla la ubicación del usuario en cualquier dispositivo que disponga de sistema operativo Android. Además de la estimación de la posición, este sistema muestra un mapa que le ayuda a ver en qué cuadrante de la sala está situado el usuario. Este sistema ha sido diseñado con una interfaz sencilla para permitir que usuarios sin conocimiento tecnológico o no acostumbrados al uso de los nuevos dispositivos de hoy en día puedan usarlo de una manera sencilla y de forma intuitiva. Por último, se han llevado a cabo varias pruebas y simulaciones del sistema para verificar su funcionamiento y precisión. El rendimiento del sistema se ha comprobado en dos puntos diferentes de la sala (lugar donde se han hecho todas las pruebas y desarrollado la aplicación) realizando cambios en el código Java para mejorar aún más la precisión y eficacia del posicionamiento. Como resultado de todo esto, se ha comprobado que la ubicación del punto de acceso (AP) y la configuración de la red inalámbrica es importante, y por ello se debe de tener en cuenta para evitar interferencias y tantos errores como sea posible en la estimación de la posición.
