The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate bacterial leakage along the implant-abutment interface under unloaded conditions. Twelve premachined abutments with plastic sleeves and 12 dental implants were used in this study. Prior to tests of bacterial leakage, samples from the inner parts of the implants were collected with sterile microbrushes to serve as negative controls for contamination. After casting, the abutments were tightened to 32 Ncm on the implants. The assemblies were immersed in 2.0 mL of human saliva and incubated for 7 days. After this period, possible contamination of the internal parts of the implants was evaluated using the DNA Checkerboard method. Microorganisms were found in the internal surfaces of all the implants evaluated. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Capnocytophaga gingivalis were the most incident species. No microorganisms were found in the samples recovered from the implants before contamination testing (negative control). Bacterial species from human saliva may penetrate the implant-abutment interface under unloaded conditions. INT J ORAL MAXILLOFAC IMPLANTS 2011;26:782-787

P>This study assessed the effect of simulated mastication on the retention of two stud attachment systems for 2-implants overdentures. Sixteen specimens, each simulating an edentulous ridge with implants and an overdenture were divided into two groups, according to the attachment system: Group I (Nobel Biocare ball-socket attachments) and Group II (Locator attachments). Retention forces were measured before and after 400 000 simulated masticatory loads in a customised device. Data were compared by two-way anova followed by Bonferroni test (alpha = 0 center dot 05). Group I presented significantly lower retention forces (Newtons) than Group II at baseline (10 center dot 6 +/- 3 center dot 6 and 66 center dot 4 +/- 16 center dot 0, respectively). However, differences were not significant after 400 000 loads (7 center dot 9 +/- 4 center dot 3 and 21 center dot 6 +/- 17 center dot 0). The number of cycles did not influence the measurements in Group I, whereas a non-linear descending curve was found for Group II. It was concluded that simulated mastication resulted in minor changes for the ball attachment tested. Nevertheless, it reduced the retention of Locator attachments to 40% of the baseline values, what suggests that mastication is a major factor associated with maintenance needs for this system.

Objectives The aim of this study was to histomorphometrically evaluate the influence of interimplant distances (ID) and implant placement depth on bone remodeling around contiguous Morse cone connection implants with `platform-shifting` in a dog model. Material and methods Bilateral mandibular premolars of six dogs were extracted, and after 12 weeks, each dog received 8 implants, four placed 1.5 mm subcrestally (SCL) on one side of the mandible and four placed equicrestally (ECL) on the other side, alternating the ID of 2 and 3 mm. The experimental groups were SCL with IDs of 2 mm (2 SCL) and 3 mm (3 SCL) and ECL with IDs of 2 mm (2 ECL) and 3 mm (3 ECL). Metallic crowns were immediately installed. After 8 weeks, the animals were euthanized and histomorphometric analyses were performed to compare bone remodeling in the groups. Results The SCL groups` indices of crestal bone resorption were significantly lower than those of ECL groups. In addition, the vertical bone resorption around the implants was also numerically inferior in the SCL groups, but without statistical significance. No differences were obtained between the different IDs. All the groups presented similar good levels of bone-to-implant contact and histological bone density. Conclusion The subcrestal placement of contiguous Morse cone connection implants with `platform shifting` was more efficient in preserving the interimplant crestal bone. P>The aim of this study was to validate an original portable device to measure attachment retention of implant overdentures both in the lab and in clinical settings. The device was built with a digital force measurement gauge (Imada) secured to a vertical wheel stand associated with a customized support to hold and position the denture in adjustable angulations. Sixteen matrix and patrix cylindrical stud attachments (Locator (R)) were randomly assigned as in vitro test specimens. Attachment abutments were secured in an implant analogue hung to the digital force gauge or to the load cell of a traction machine used as the gold standard (Instron Universal Testing Machine). Matrices were secured in a denture duplicate attached to the customized support, permitting reproducibility of their position on both pulling devices. Attachment retention in the axial direction was evaluated by measuring maximum dislodging force or peak load during five consecutive linear dislodgments of each attachment on both devices. After a wear simulation, retention was measured again at several time periods. The peak load measurements with the customized Imada device were similar to those obtained with the gold standard Instron machine. These findings suggest that the proposed portable device can provide accurate information on the retentive properties of attachment systems for removable dental prostheses.

Objectives Bacterial penetration along the implant-abutment interface as a consequence of abutment screw loosening has been reported in a number of recent studies. The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the influence of repeated tightening of the abutment screw on leakage of Streptococcus mutans along the interface between implants and pre-machined abutments. Materials and methods Twenty pre-machined abutments with a plastic sleeve were used. The abutment screws were tightened to 32 N cm in group 1 (n=10 - control) and to 32 N cm, loosened and re-tightened with the same torque twice in group 2 (n=10). The assemblies were completely immersed in 5 ml of Tryptic Soy Broth medium inoculated with S. mutans and incubated for 14 days. After this period, contamination of the implant internal threaded chamber was evaluated using the DNA Checkerboard method. Results Microorganisms were found on the internal surfaces of both groups evaluated. However, bacterial counts in group 2 were significantly higher than that in the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion These results suggest that bacterial leakage between implants and abutments occurs even under unloaded conditions and at a higher intensity when the abutment screw is tightened and loosened repeatedly. Spheres of different types of material are used for the replacement of lost volume after removal of the eye bulb or its content to prevent contraction of the orbital cavity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the scope of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) used as intraocular implant in eviscerated rabbit eye. Twelve New Zealand rabbits underwent unilateral evisceration of the left eye, with subsequent implantation of PMMA sphere 12 mm in diameter. Clinical evaluation was performed daily during the first 15 days after surgery and every 15 days until the end of the study period (180 days). For the histopathological analysis, three animals per trial underwent enucleation at 15, 45, 90 and 180 days after evisceration. There was no wound dehiscence, signs of infection or implant extrusion in any animal throughout the study period. Histological examination revealed the formation of fibrovascular tissue around the implants. The PMMA behaved as inert and non-integrable.

Background: Several studies link the seamless fit of implant-supported prosthesis with the accuracy of the dental impression technique obtained during acquisition. In addition, factors such as implant angulation and coping shape contribute to implant misfit. Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the most accurate impression technique and factors affecting the impression accuracy. Material and Methods: A systematic review of peer-reviewed literature was conducted analyzing articles published between 2009 and 2013. The following search terms were used: implant impression, impression accuracy, and implant misfit.A total of 417 articles were identified; 32 were selected for review. Results: All 32 selected studies refer to in vitro studies. Fourteen articles compare open and closed impression technique, 8 advocate the open technique, and 6 report similar results. Other 14 articles evaluate splinted and non-splinted techniques; all advocating the splinted technique. Polyether material usage was reported in nine; six studies tested vinyl polysiloxane and one study used irreversible hydrocolloid. Eight studies evaluated different copings designs. Intraoral optical devices were compared in four studies. Conclusions: The most accurate results were achieved with two configurations: (1) the optical intraoral system with powder and (2) the open technique with splinted squared transfer copings, using polyether as impression material.

The success of dental implant-supported prosthesis is directly linked to the accuracy obtained during implant’s pose estimation (position and orientation). Although traditional impression techniques and recent digital acquisition methods are acceptably accurate, a simultaneously fast, accurate and operator-independent methodology is still lacking. Hereto, an image-based framework is proposed to estimate the patient-specific implant’s pose using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and prior knowledge of implanted model. The pose estimation is accomplished in a threestep approach: (1) a region-of-interest is extracted from the CBCT data using 2 operator-defined points at the implant’s main axis; (2) a simulated CBCT volume of the known implanted model is generated through Feldkamp-Davis-Kress reconstruction and coarsely aligned to the defined axis; and (3) a voxel-based rigid registration is performed to optimally align both patient and simulated CBCT data, extracting the implant’s pose from the optimal transformation. Three experiments were performed to evaluate the framework: (1) an in silico study using 48 implants distributed through 12 tridimensional synthetic mandibular models; (2) an in vitro study using an artificial mandible with 2 dental implants acquired with an i-CAT system; and (3) two clinical case studies. The results shown positional errors of 67±34μm and 108μm, and angular misfits of 0.15±0.08º and 1.4º, for experiment 1 and 2, respectively. Moreover, in experiment 3, visual assessment of clinical data results shown a coherent alignment of the reference implant. Overall, a novel image-based framework for implants’ pose estimation from CBCT data was proposed, showing accurate results in agreement with dental prosthesis modelling requirements.

Nos equinos, um grande número de eventos das fases iniciais do desenvolvimento embrionário são únicos e distintos daqueles que se verificam em outras espécies, incluindo os críticos mas pouco esclarecidos mecanismos de reconhecimento materno da gestação. Este processo fisiológico, através do qual o concepto sinaliza a sua presença ao organismo materno assegurando a manutenção do corpo lúteo (CL) primário e, consequentemente, dos níveis de progesterona necessários à sobrevivência e desenvolvimento do embrião, está pouco esclarecido. De facto, ainda não é claro qual o sinal embrionário primário que assegura a manutenção do CL nos equinos e, apesar do número de potenciais factores que contribuem para o reconhecimento e manutenção da gestação não parar de crescer, nenhum é capaz por si só de satisfazer todos os critérios que caracterizam um factor anti-luteolítico ou luteostático. Por outro lado, é geralmente aceite o conceito de que o reconhecimento materno da gestação é um fenómeno fisiológico de extrema importância e que qualquer falha, quer no envio quer na recepção do sinal apropriado, pode levar a morte embrionária. De facto, a perda de gestações durante ou à volta do espaço de tempo em que ocorre o reconhecimento materno da gestação (i.e dias 10-16 após a ovulação) é comum mas imprevisível (e, portanto, difícil de controlar e prevenir) na prática clínica, sendo uma causa de grandes perdas económicas.

O presente documento tem como principal objectivo efectuar uma abordagem aos diversos aspectos que constituem um Sistema de Suporte à Decisão de um Anteprojecto de Centrais Mini-Hídricas. A energia é, nos dias de hoje, um dos temas políticos com mais relevância para a nossa sociedade, muito em particular para os países que não dispõem de recursos energéticos de origem fóssil. O preço do petróleo e seus derivados tem tendência para aumentar, embora possa ter períodos de decréscimo; a escassez associada a estes recursos tenderá a originar uma futura escalada de preços. Com a crescente preocupação com o ambiente, nomeadamente com as emissões de gases poluentes, devido à utilização de combustíveis fósseis para gerar electricidade, é cada vez mais imperioso optar por recursos com menor impacte ambiental e, de preferência, renováveis. A promoção e a utilização de fontes de energia renováveis para a produção energética resultam da necessidade de garantir um desenvolvimento sustentável para a sociedade actual e futura, sendo a energia hídrica uma boa solução alternativa. Após uma análise das questões técnicas e económicas relacionadas com as Centrais Mini-Hídricas, foi utilizada uma aplicação informática, Solver Premium®, que tem como suporte o Excel®, visando a maximização do potencial hidroeléctrico e a respectiva viabilidade económica entre vários cenários colocados para um pequeno aproveitamento hídrico em estudo. Os estudos de viabilidade são uma mais-valia para um agente de decisão; com a informação replicada pela aplicação informática utilizada, é possível obter com rapidez e uma curta margem de erro a decisão do melhor investimento, considerando várias hipóteses no projecto em análise.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar as características de medida do Mini-Exame do Estado Mental em idosos atendidos em um ambulatório geral. MÉTODOS: O total de 303 indivíduos (>65 anos) foi submetido à avaliação geriátrica com vários instrumentos, inclusive o Mini-Exame do Estado Mental. Foram calculadas a sensibilidade, a especificidade, os valores preditivos positivo e negativo e a curva ROC. RESULTADOS: A sensibilidade, a especificidade, os valores preditivos positivo e negativo e a área sob a curva ROC foram 80,8%, 65,3%, 44,7%, 90,7% e 0,807, respectivamente (ponto de corte 23/24). O melhor ponto de corte para indivíduos analfabetos foi 18/19 (sensibilidade =73,5%; especificidade =73,9%), e para aqueles com instrução escolar foi 24/25 (sensibilidade =75%; especificidade =69,7%). CONCLUSÕES: Para o rastreamento cognitivo de idosos atendidos em ambulatórios gerais pelo Mini-Exame do Estado Mental, a escolaridade deverá ser considerada para a adoção do ponto de corte mais adequado.

De todos os elementos que constituem uma central minihídrica as turbinas e os geradores são os que mais dizem respeito à engenharia electrotécnica. Este artigo pretende apresentar os tipos de turbinas utilizadas nas centrais minihídricas. Estas podem ser classificadas por duas tecnologias distintas: turbinas de acção ou turbinas de reacção. As turbinas de acção podem ser do tipo Pelton ou Banki- Mitchell. As turbinas de reacção podem ser do tipo Francis, Kaplan ou Hélice.

This thesis aims at addressing the development of autonomous behaviors, for search and exploration with a mini-UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), or also called MAV (Mini Aerial Vehicle) prototype, in order to gather information in rescue scenarios. The platform used in this work is a four rotor helicopter, known as quad-rotor from the German company Ascending Technologies GmbH, which is later assembled with a on-board processing unit (i.e. a tiny light weight computer) and a on-board sensor suite (i.e. 2D-LIDAR and Ultrasonic Sonar). This work can be divided into two phases. In the first phase an Indoor Position Tracking system was settled in order to obtain the Cartesian coordinates (i.e. X, Y, Z) and orientation (i.e.heading) which provides the relative position and orientation of the platform. The second phase was the design and implementation of medium/high level controllers on each command input in order to autonomously control the aircraft position, which is the first step towards an autonomous hovering flight, and any autonomous behavior (e.g. Landing, Object avoidance, Follow the wall). The main work is carried out in the Laboratory ”Intelligent Systems for Emergencies and Civil Defense”, in collaboration with ”Dipartimento di Informatica e Sistemistica” of Sapienza Univ. of Rome and ”Istituto Superiore Antincendi” of the Italian Firemen Department.
