New trace element analyses are presented for Leg 180 dolerites, basalts from the Papuan Ultramafic Belt (PUB), and basement rocks of Woodlark Island. The Leg 180 dolerites are similar to those from Woodlark Island in being derived from an enriched source but differ from the PUB, which came from a source similar to normal mid-ocean ridge basalts. A reliable 40Ar/39Ar age of 54.0 ± 1.0 Ma has been obtained by step heating of a whole-rock sample from Site 1109, and a similar but less reliable age was obtained for a sample from Site 1118. Plagioclase from Site 1109 did not give a meaningful age. This age is broadly similar to ages from the Dabi volcanics of the nearby Cape Vogel and for the PUB.

Microprobe mineral compositions of olivine, plagioclase, clinopyroxene, chrome spinel, ilmenite, and titanomagnetite are presented for 7 samples from 4 flows of hawaiite and one flow of tholeiitic basalt from Hole 430A at Ojin Seamount, 4 samples from 3 flows of alkalic basalt from Hole 432A at Nintoku Seamount, and 29 samples from 2 flows of alkalic basalt and 24 flows of tholeiitic basalt from Holes 433A, 433B, and 433C at Suiko Seamount. The four hawaiite flows from Hole 430A on Ojin Seamount have nearly identical mineralogy. The plagioclase phenocrysts and calculated equilibrium olivine appear to have crystallized at about 1175°C; the groundmass plagioclase crystallized from about 1135° to 1010°C; and the Fe-Ti oxides equilibrated at temperatures from 1000°C to 720°C under oxygen fugacities of 10**-11 to 10**-17. The single tholeiitic flow contains glomerocrysts of plagioclase (An80 to An65) and clinopyroxene (Wo43En46Fsn to Wo42En45Fs13). The plagioclase phenocrysts give calculated temperatures as high as 1400°C, indicating that they were not equilibrated with a magma having the bulk rock composition. The plagioclase groundmass crystallized at 1120° to 1070°C, and the Fe-Ti oxides equilibrated at 1070° to 930°C under oxygen fugacities of 10**-10 to 10**-12. Using mineral compositions of Hawaiian basalts as a guide, we infer that the hawaiite flows were erupted during the post-caldera alkalic eruptive stage and the tholeiite was erupted during the shield-building or caldera collapse stage. The three alkalic basalt flows from Hole 432A on Nintoku Seamount have similar mineralogy, although Flow Units 1 and 2 contain much more abundant plagioclase phenocrysts. The groundmass plagioclase crystallized at temperatures between 1175° and 1000°C. The olivine and plagioclase phenocrysts do not appear to be in equilibrium with the enclosing magmas. The mineral compositions suggest that these samples are intermediate between alkalic basalt and hawaiite; they probably erupted during the post-caldera alkalic stage of eruption. The two analyzed alkalic basalt flows are the two youngest flows recovered at Holes 433A, 433B, and 433C. Flow Unit 1 contains abundant sector-zoned clinopyroxene, and Flow Unit 2 contains rare kink-banded olivine xenocrysts. The plagioclase phenocrysts yield calculated temperatures of 1440° to 1250°C, indicating that they are probably not cognate. Calculated-equilibrium olivine indicates crystallization of olivine at about 1170°C. The Fe-Ti oxides equilibrated at temperatures of 1140° to 870°C under oxygen fugacities of 10**-9 to 10**-14. The groundmass plagioclase crystallized at temperatures of 1178° to 1035 °C. The mineral compositions indicate that these alkalic basalts erupted during the post-caldera alkalic eruptive stage. The 24 analyzed tholeiitic basalts are subdivided on the basis of phenocryst abundances into olivine tholeiites, plagioclase tholeiites, and tholeiites. The crystallization sequence appears to have been chrome spinel, olivine, plagioclase, and clinopyroxene as phenocryst phases, followed by and overlapping with groundmass crystallization of plagioclase (1180° to 920°C), clinopyroxene, and Fe-Ti oxides (1140° to 670°C). At least three flows contain pigeonite. The mineral compositions indicate that all the samples from Flow Unit 4 downward are tholeiitic basalts, although Flow Unit 64 has mineral compositions transitional to those in alkalic basalts.

Cyclic fluctuations in global sea level during epochs of warm greenhouse climate have remained enigmatic, because absence or subordinate presence of polar ice during these periods precludes an explanation by glacio-eustatic forcing. An alternative concept suggests that the water-bearing potential of groundwater aquifers is equal to that of ice caps and that changes in the dynamic balance of aquifer charge versus discharge, as a function of the temperature-related intensity of the hydrological cycle, may have driven eustasy during warm climates. However, this idea has long been neglected for two reasons: 1) the large storage potential of subsurface aquifers was confused with the much smaller capacity of rivers and lakes and 2) empirical data were missing that document past variations in the hydrological cycle in relation to eustasy. In the present study we present the first empirical evidence for changes in precipitation, continental weathering intensity and evaporation that correlate with astronomically (long obliquity) forced sea-level cycles during the warmest period of the Cretaceous (Cenomanian-Turonian). We compare sequence-stratigraphic data with changes in the terrigenous mineral assemblage in a low-latitude marine sedimentary sequence from the equatorial humid belt at the South-Tethyan margin (Levant carbonate platform, Jordan), thereby avoiding uncertainties from land-ocean correlations. Our data indicate covariance between cycles in weathering and sea level: predominantly chemical weathering under wet climate conditions is reflected by dominance of weathering products (clays) in deposits that represent sea-level fall (aquifer charge > discharge). Conversely, preservation of weathering-sensitive minerals (feldspars, epidote and pyroxenes) in transgressive sediments reflects decreased continental weathering due to dryer climate (aquifer discharge > charge). Based on our results we suggest that aquifer-eustasy represents a viable alternative to glacio-eustasy as a driver of cyclic 3rd-order sea-level fluctuations during the middle Cretaceous greenhouse climate, and it may have been a pervasive process throughout Earth history.

New geological and geophysical data on the Amirante Arc, which locates to the south of the Seychelles Islands, are presented. These data were obtained by Pacific Oceanological Institute during the 33-rd cruise of R/V Professor Bogorov in 1990. The Amirante Arc represents a seamount chain, which has submeridional strike and total length about 400 km. To the west of the Amirante Arc there are a deep sea trench and a back-arc basin, i.e. this area is characterized by structural elements associated with the subduction zone of Western Pacific type. According to our data the Amirante Arc is composed by tholeiites of ocean plateau type. This facts are evidences that the Amirante Arc differs from typical Pacific island arcs. This gives an opportunity to distinguish a special type of oceanic structures, i.e. non-volcanic (amagmatic) ridges. The Amirante Ridge has been probably formed as a result of oceanic crust heaping due to horizontal displacements of its blocks in the process of spreding ridge formation in the Indian Ocean during Cretaceous-Paleogene.

Primary and secondary mineral phases from Holes 1268A (11 samples), 1272A (9 samples), and 1274A (12 samples) were analyzed by electron microprobe in Bonn and Cologne (Germany). Bulk rock powders of these samples were also analyzed geochemically, including major and trace elements (Paulick et al., 2006, doi:10.1016/j.chemgeo.2006.04.011). Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 209 Holes 1268A, 1272A, and 1274A differ remarkably in alteration intensity and mineralogy, and details regarding their lithologic characteristics are presented in Bach et al. (2004, doi:10.1029/2004GC000744) and Shipboard Scientific Party (2004, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.209.101.2004). Because of the least altered character of peridotite in Hole 1274A, abundant clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, olivine, and spinel were analyzed at this site. In Hole 1272A, primary silicates are rare and analyses were restricted to some samples that contain traces of olivine and orthopyroxene. Because of the intensity of alteration, Hole 1268A is devoid of primary phases except spinel. Commonly, alteration is pseudomorphic and serpentinization of olivine and orthopyroxene can be distinguished. Accordingly, compositional variations of the alteration minerals with regard to the precursor minerals are one of the issues investigated in this data report.

Mineralogical and geochemical analyses of alteration products from upper and lower volcanic series recovered during ODP Leg 104 reveal variations both in composition and order of crystallization of clay minerals vesicles and voids filling and replacing glass. These results provide information about successive alteration stages of rocks and interlayered volcaniclastic sediments. The first stage, related to initial basalt-seawater interaction, is characterized by development of Fe-smectites, especially Fe-rich saponite. A second stage of intermittently superimposed subaerial weathering is marked by iron-oxides-halloysite-kaolinite formation. The third episode, interpreted as hydrothermal on the basis of O-isotopic data, is defined by postburial coprecipitation of Fe-poor, Mg-rich saponite and celadonite. A distinct final and pervasive hydrothermal stage, occurring mainly in the lower series and dominated by Al-smectites-zeolites assemblage, indicates changes toward a more reducing alteration environment.

Physical properties (water content, bulk density, magnetic susceptibility, natural remanent magnetization, nature of magnetization, and composition of ferromagnetic fraction), chemical, and (optionally) mineral composition of bottom sediments from the north-west Sea of Japan have been studied. Their stratigraphic subdivision based on composition of diatoms has been carried out. Obtained data have allowed to find out some aspects of influence of paleogeographic conditions and diagenetic processes on change of physical properties of the sediments, as well as on their composition in Holocene and Late Pleistocene.

This collective monography by a group of lithologists from the Geological Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences summarizes materials of the Deep-Sea Drilling Project from the Atlantic Ocean. It gives results of processing materials on the sequences drilled during DSDP Legs 41, 45, 48 and 49. These studies were based on lithological-facial analysis combined with detailed mineralogical-petrographic description. Its chapters give a number of ideas on formation of the Earth sedimentary cover, which can be used for compilation of regional and global schemes of ocean paleogeography, reconstruction of history of some structures in the World Ocean, correlation between sedimentary processes on continents and in oceans, estimation of perspectives for oil and gas fields and ore formation.

The strontium isotope ratios of authigenic carbonates from Indian Ocean sea-floor basalts have been used to determine the timing of carbonate mineral precipitation and fluid flow. The samples include calcites from 57.2 Ma crust from Ocean Drilling Project (ODP) Site 715, and calcites, aragonites, and siderites from 63.7 Ma crust from ODP Site 707. At Site 715, calcite precipitation may have begun at any time after the basalts cooled, and it continued until approximately 31 Ma, or 26 m.y. after basalt eruption. At Site 707, aragonite and siderite did not begin to precipitate until about 36 Ma, almost 30 m.y. after basalt eruption, and continued to precipitate until at least 30 and 28 Ma, respectively. Calcite precipitation began at approximately 32 Ma and continued until 22 Ma. These ages suggest that vein mineral deposition and low-temperature fluid circulation in the ocean crust may continue for much longer periods of time than previously observed.

The lithostratigraphy of Neogene hemipelagic sediments recovered from the Japan Sea during Leg 127 was revised to improve intersite consistency and to remove confusion stemming from diagenetic modification of the lithology through the opal-A to opal-CT transformation. Special emphasis was put on the presence and nature of dark-light cycles in revising the lithostratigraphy. Mineral composition analysis was conducted for samples from Sites 794, 795, and 797. In addition, major element chemical composition analysis was conducted for these same sample sets from Site 794. The result of mineral composition analysis suggests that the detrital component, which consists of such minerals as quartz, plagioclase, illite, and kaolinite plus chlorite, is diluted to various degrees by biogenic silica (opal-A) and its diagenetic equivalents (opal-CT and quartz). Smectite, on the other hand, may be a diagenetic or hydrothermal alteration product of volcanic material, although more study is necessary to confirm its origin. As a whole, vertical variation in the sediment composition is consistent with the revised lithostratigraphy and helps to characterize the redefined lithologic units quantitatively.

Mineralogy and geochemistry of sulfide-bearing rocks and ores discovered within the Menez Gwen Hydrothermal Field are studied. Samples were taken during Cruise 49 of R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh of the p.p. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology. Mineral composition of rocks and ores were studied by traditional methods of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (CAMSCAN), and microprobe analysis (EPMA SX-50). Contents of trace elements were determined by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Zn-Cu ore comprises zonal sulfide chimney intergrowths. Numerous Se-rich copper ore fragments occur in volcanomictic layered gritstones and/or barite slabs. Mineral composition, zonality and association of trace elements in ore are typical of black smokers formed at the basalt base near the Azores Triple Junction in the MAR. Obtained results make it possible to reconstruct formation history of the Menez Gwen Hydrothermal Field into the high-temperature (Cu-Se association in ore clasts), medium-temperature (Zn-Cu-As association in ore), and recent (Ba-SiO2 association) stages.

Abyssal peridotite from the 15°20'N area of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge show complex geochemical variations among the different sites drilled during ODP Leg 209. Major element compositions indicate variable degrees of melt depletion and refertilization as well as local hydrothermal metasomatism. Strongest evidence for melt-rock interactions are correlated Light Rare Earth Element (LREE) and High Field Strength Element (HFSE) additions at Sites 1270 and 1271. In contrast, hydrothermal alteration at Sites 1274, 1272, and 1268 causes LREE mobility associated with minor HFSE variability, reflecting the low solubility of HFSE in aqueous solutions. Site 1274 contains the least-altered, highly refractory, peridotite with strong depletion in LREE and shows a gradual increase in the intensity of isochemical serpentinization; except for the addition of H2O which causes a mass gain of up to 20 g/100 g. The formation of magnetite is reflected in decreasing Fe(2+)/Fe(3+) ratios. This style of alteration is referred to as rock-dominated serpentinization. In contrast, fluid-dominated serpentinization at Site 1268 is characterized by gains in sulfur and development of U-shaped REE pattern with strong positive Eu anomalies which are also characteristic for hot (350 to 400°C) vent-type fluids discharging from black smoker fields. Serpentinites at Site 1268 were overprinted by talc alteration under static conditions due to interaction with high a_SiO2 fluids causing the development of smooth, LREE enriched patterns with pronounced negative Eu anomalies. These results show that hydrothermal fluid-peridotite and fluid-serpentinite interaction processes are an important factor regarding the budget of exchange processes between the lithosphere and the hydrosphere in slow spreading environments.
