A quantitative study of late Cenozoic silicoflagellates from the northwestern Pacific sites of Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 86 shows a relative paleotemperature (Ts) gradient with lowest values (Ts = 30) in the north. Some new ecostratigraphic relations for the region are indicated, such as the last common occurrence of Dictyocha brevispina at 2.6 - 3.0 m.y. ago during a cool interval. Elements of North Pacific and low-latitude biostratigraphic zonations can be identified, but the mixing of cool- and warm-indicator taxa prompted the definition of the new Miocene Mesocena hexalitha Subzone and Pliocene Distephanus jimlingii Subzone. Scanning-electron microscope study of Leg 86 silicoflagellates was done to determine whether various types of skeletal surface texture are temperature dependent. To conduct the study we organized a new surface-texture descriptive code, which characterizes the apical structure/basal ring/spine sequence using new definitions of the terms crenulate (C), linear (L), nodular (N), reticulate (R), and smooth (S). One new silicoflagellate genus, Caryocha Bukry et Monechi, n. gen., is described and several new combinations are made.

Au contents have been determined in 77 samples of basalts and sheeted diabase dikes. Pd has been evaluated in 39 of the samples. The mean amount of Au is 3 parts per billion (ppb), fluctuating from 0.4 to 10 ppb. Au contents appear to be independent in type and intensity of alteration as well as with depth sub-bottom, although in the lower part of Hole 504B, 1900-2000 mbsf, Au contents are markedly decreased (mean: 1.1 ppb) and show a distinct correlation with a decrease in Zn contents. Pd contents vary from 2 to 360 ppb (mean: 37 ppb) Pd is higher in basalts (53.7 ppb) and lower in diabase dikes (30 ppb), especially in moderately or strongly altered ones (12.5 ppb).

Site 549 recovered a Lower Cretaceous succession which has been shown to include parts of the Barremian and Albian stages. Forty-four species of Ostracoda are illustrated and their stratigraphic distribution used to recognise three major facies units. An high diversity inner shelf facies earlier in the Barremian gives way to a low diversity, outer shelf facies, higher in the succession. The early Albian appears to indicate a return to an inner shelf fauna. The faunas recovered have been compared to similar faunas elsewhere in N. W. Europe.
