During DSDP Leg 65, a series of holes was drilled into the oceanic basement across the mouth of the Gulf of California to study the composition of the crust and the nature of its construction at a young spreading center. In Holes 483 and 483B, two of the deepest basement holes drilled on this leg, the basement is characterized by an upper sequence of interlayered massive basalts and sediments underlain by a lower sequence of interlayered pillow and massive basalts. Electron microprobe analyses were performed on pyroxene, plagioclase, olivine, spinel, and glass from 14 representative samples of 10 of the 16 major lithologic units. These analyses along with petrographic results can be used to interpret the detailed crystallization history of the basalts. We believe from the results of this study that the basalts were formed by at least a three-stage cooling process, followed by eruption and formation of quench phases. Our data do not support magma mixing.

A major change in Cenozoic deep-sea benthic foraminifera occurred in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans near the Paleocene/Eocene boundary. Benthic foraminiferal abundance changes began at about 61.5 Ma at Pacific Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Site 577. A major extinction event followed at 58-57 Ma (between Zones P6a and P6b), and a series of first appearances continued until circa 55.5 Ma (Zone P6c). These faunal changes occurred during a 6°C warming of Pacific bottom water and may indicate that the primary cause was changing temperature. Other potential causes of the faunal turnover include global changes in surface ocean productivity and changing bottom water source regions. Comparison of benthic and planktonic delta13C records requires no change in the ratio of oceanic phosphorous to carbon during the late Paleocene to early Eocene, which weakens the case for (but does not disprove) a change in surface ocean productivity at this time. Interbasinal comparisons of benthic foraminiferal delta13C records document that water with high delta13C values filled the Cape Basin during the late Paleocene and possibly the early Eocene (circa 61-57 Ma), but apparently did not extend into the western basins of the Atlantic. This pattern suggests a supply of Antarctic source water for the Cape Basin and possible tectonic isolation of the western Atlantic basins during at least part of the late Paleocene. Carbon isotope comparisons show that bottom water supply to the Cape Basin was reduced in the early Eocene. Eolian grain size data suggest that a decrease in zonal wind intensity occurred at the end of the Paleocene. These late Paleocene climatic changes (bottom water warming and decreased wind intensity) correspond with evidence for an important global tectonic reorganization and extensive subaerial volcanism, which may have contributed to climatic warming through increased supply of CO2.

The El Niño/ Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon is the strongest known natural interannual climate fluctuation. The most recent two extreme ENSO events of 1982/83 and 1997/98 severley hit the socio-economy of main parts of Indonesia. As the climate variability is not homogeneous over the whole Archipelago of Indonesia, ENSO events cause negative precipitation anomalies of diverse magnitude and uration in different regions. Understanding the hydrology of humid tropical catchments is an essential prerequisite to investigate the impact of climate variability on the catchment hydrology. Together with the quantitative assessment of future water resource changes they are essential tools to develop mitigation strategies on a catchment scale. These results can be integrated into long term Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) strategies. The general objective of this study is to investigate and quantify the impact of ENSO caused climate variability on the water balance and the implications for water resources of a mesoscale tropical catchment.

Major and rare earth element (REE) data for basalts from Holes 483, 483B, and 485A of DSDP Leg 65, East Pacific Rise, mouth of the Gulf of California, support a simple fractional crystallization model for the genesis of rocks from this suite. The petrography and mineral chemistry (presented in detail elsewhere) provide no evidence for magma mixing, but rather a simple multistage cooling process. Based on its lowest TiO2 content (0.88%), FeO*/MgO ratio (0.95 with total Fe as FeO), and Mg# (100 Mg/Mg + Fe" = 70), sample 483-17-2-(78-83) has been selected as the most primitive primary magma of the samples analyzed. This is supported by the REE data which show this sample has the lowest total REE content, a La/Sm_cn (chondrite-normalized) = 0.36, and Eu/Sm_cn = 1.05. Because other samples analyzed have higher SiO2, lower Mg#, and a negative Eu anomaly (Eu/Sm_cn as low as 0.89), they are most likely derivative magmas. Wright-Doherty and trace element modelling support fractional crystallization of 14.1% plagioclase (An88), 6.7% olivine (Fo86), and 4.7% clinopyroxene (Wo41En49Fs10) from 483-17-2-(78-83) to form the least differentiated sample with Mg# = 63. The La/Sm_cn of this derivative magma is almost identical to the parent magma (0.35 to 0.36), but the other samples have higher La/Sm_cn (0.45 to 0.51), more total REE, and lower Mg# (60 to 56). Both Wright-Doherty and trace element modelling indicate that the primary magma chosen cannot produce these more evolved samples. For the major elements, the TiO2 and P2O5 are too low in the calculated versus the observed (1.38 to 1.90; 0.11 to 0.17, respectively, for example). Rayleigh fractionation calculates a lower La/Sm_cn and requires about 60% crystal removal versus 40% for the Wright-Doherty. These more evolved samples must be derived from a parent magma different from the one selected here and, unfortunately, not sampled in this study. A magma formed by a smaller degree of partial melting with slightly more residual clinopyroxene left in the mantle than for sample 483-17-2-(78-83) is required.
