Many progresses have been made since the Digital Earth notion was envisioned thirteen years ago. However, the mechanism for integrating geographic information into the Digital Earth is still quite limited. In this context, we have developed a process to generate, integrate and publish geospatial Linked Data from several Spanish National data-sets. These data-sets are related to four Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community (INSPIRE) themes, specifically with Administrative units, Hydrography, Statistical units, and Meteorology. Our main goal is to combine different sources (heterogeneous, multidisciplinary, multitemporal, multiresolution, and multilingual) using Linked Data principles. This goal allows the overcoming of current problems of information integration and driving geographical information toward the next decade scenario, that is, ?Linked Digital Earth.?

ABSTRACT The evolution of smartphones, all equipped with digital cameras, is driving a growing demand for ever more complex applications that need to rely on real-time computer vision algorithms. However, video signals are only increasing in size, whereas the performance of single-core processors has somewhat stagnated in the past few years. Consequently, new computer vision algorithms will need to be parallel to run on multiple processors and be computationally scalable. One of the most promising classes of processors nowadays can be found in graphics processing units (GPU). These are devices offering a high parallelism degree, excellent numerical performance and increasing versatility, which makes them interesting to run scientific computations. In this thesis, we explore two computer vision applications with a high computational complexity that precludes them from running in real time on traditional uniprocessors. However, we show that by parallelizing subtasks and implementing them on a GPU, both applications attain their goals of running at interactive frame rates. In addition, we propose a technique for fast evaluation of arbitrarily complex functions, specially designed for GPU implementation. First, we explore the application of depth-image–based rendering techniques to the unusual configuration of two convergent, wide baseline cameras, in contrast to the usual configuration used in 3D TV, which are narrow baseline, parallel cameras. By using a backward mapping approach with a depth inpainting scheme based on median filters, we show that these techniques are adequate for free viewpoint video applications. In addition, we show that referring depth information to a global reference system is ill-advised and should be avoided. Then, we propose a background subtraction system based on kernel density estimation techniques. These techniques are very adequate for modelling complex scenes featuring multimodal backgrounds, but have not been so popular due to their huge computational and memory complexity. The proposed system, implemented in real time on a GPU, features novel proposals for dynamic kernel bandwidth estimation for the background model, selective update of the background model, update of the position of reference samples of the foreground model using a multi-region particle filter, and automatic selection of regions of interest to reduce computational cost. The results, evaluated on several databases and compared to other state-of-the-art algorithms, demonstrate the high quality and versatility of our proposal. Finally, we propose a general method for the approximation of arbitrarily complex functions using continuous piecewise linear functions, specially formulated for GPU implementation by leveraging their texture filtering units, normally unused for numerical computation. Our proposal features a rigorous mathematical analysis of the approximation error in function of the number of samples, as well as a method to obtain a suboptimal partition of the domain of the function to minimize approximation error.

Structural information on complex biological RNA molecules can be exploited to design tectoRNAs or artificial modular RNA units that can self-assemble through tertiary interactions thereby forming nanoscale RNA objects. The selective interactions of hairpin tetraloops with their receptors can be used to mediate tectoRNA assembly. Here we report on the modulation of the specificity and the strength of tectoRNA assembly (in the nanomolar to micromolar range) by variation of the length of the RNA subunits, the nature of their interacting motifs and the degree of flexibility of linker regions incorporated into the molecules. The association is also dependent on the concentration of magnesium. Monitoring of tectoRNA assembly by lead(II) cleavage protection indicates that some degree of structural flexibility is required for optimal binding. With tectoRNAs one can compare the binding affinities of different tertiary motifs and quantify the strength of individual interactions. Furthermore, in analogy to the synthons used in organic chemistry to synthesize more complex organic compounds, tectoRNAs form the basic assembly units for constructing complex RNA structures on the nanometer scale. Thus, tectoRNA provides a means for constructing molecular scaffoldings that organize functional modules in three-dimensional space for a wide range of applications.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neuro-degenerative disorder, the second most common after Alzheimer's disease. After diagnosis, treatments can help to relieve the symptoms, but there is no known cure for PD. PD is characterized by a combination of motor and no-motor dysfunctions. Among the motor symptoms there is the so called Freezing of Gait (FoG). The FoG is a phenomenon in PD patients in which the feet stock to the floor and is difficult for the patient to initiate movement. FoG is a severe problem, since it is associated with falls, anxiety, loss of mobility, accidents, mortality and it has substantial clinical and social consequences decreasing the quality of life in PD patients. Medicine can be very successful in controlling movements disorders and dealing with some of the PD symptoms. However, the relationship between medication and the development of FoG remains unclear. Several studies have demonstrated that visual or auditory rhythmical cuing allows PD patients to improve their motor abilities. Rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS) was shown to be particularly effective at improving gait, specially with patients that manifest FoG. While RAS allows to reduce the time and the effects of FoGs occurrence in PD patients after the FoG is detected, it can not avoid the episode due to the latency of detection. An improvement of the system would be the prediction of the FoG. This thesis was developed following two main objectives: (1) the finding of specifics properties during pre FoG periods different from normal walking context and other walking events like turns and stops using the information provided by the inertial measurements units (IMUs) and (2) the formulation of a model for automatically detect the pre FoG patterns in order to completely avoid the upcoming freezing event in PD patients. The first part focuses on the analysis of different methods for feature extraction which might lead in the FoG occurrence.

The spatial data set delineates areas with similar environmental properties regarding soil, terrain morphology, climate and affiliation to the same administrative unit (NUTS3 or comparable units in size) at a minimum pixel size of 1km2. The scope of developing this data set is to provide a link between spatial environmental information (e.g. soil properties) and statistical data (e.g. crop distribution) available at administrative level. Impact assessment of agricultural management on emissions of pollutants or radiative active gases, or analysis regarding the influence of agricultural management on the supply of ecosystem services, require the proper spatial coincidence of the driving factors. The HSU data set provides e.g. the link between the agro-economic model CAPRI and biophysical assessment of environmental impacts (updating previously spatial units, Leip et al. 2008), for the analysis of policy scenarios. Recently, a statistical model to disaggregate crop information available from regional statistics to the HSU has been developed (Lamboni et al. 2016). The HSU data set consists of the spatial layers provided in vector and raster format as well as attribute tables with information on the properties of the HSU. All input data for the delineation the HSU is publicly available. For some parameters the attribute tables provide the link between the HSU data set and e.g. the soil map(s) rather than the data itself. The HSU data set is closely linked the USCIE data set.

An inflatable drill-string packer was used at Site 839 to measure the bulk in-situ permeability within basalts cored in Hole 839B. The packer was inflated at two depths, 398.2 and 326.9 mbsf; all on-board information indicated that the packer mechanically closed off the borehole, although apparently the packer hydraulically sealed the borehole only at 398.2 mbsf. Two pulse tests were run at each depth, two constant-rate injection tests were run at the first set, and four were run at the second. Of these, only the constant-rate injection tests at the first set yielded a permeability, calculated as ranging from 1 to 5 * 10**-12 m**2. Pulse tests and constant-rate injection tests for the second set did not yield valid data. The measured permeability is an upper limit; if the packer leaked during the experiments, the basalt would be less permeable. In comparison, permeabilities measured at other Deep Sea Drilling Project and Ocean Drilling Program sites in pillow basalts and flows similar to those measured in Hole 839B are mainly about 10**-13 to 10**-14 m**2. Thus, if our results are valid, the basalts at Site 839 are more permeable than ocean-floor basalts investigated elsewhere. Based on other supporting evidence, we consider these results to be a valid measure of the permeability of the basalts. Temperature data and the geochemical and geotechnical properties of the drilled sediments all indicate that the site is strongly affected by fluid flow. The heat flow is very much less than expected in young oceanic basalts, probably a result of rapid fluid circulation through the crust. The geochemistry of pore fluids is similar to that of seawater, indicating seawater flow through the sediments, and sediments are uniformly underconsolidated for their burial depth, again indicating probable fluid flow. The basalts are highly vesicular. However, the vesicularity can only account for part of the average porosity measured on the neutron porosity well log; the remainder of the measured porosity is likely present as voids and fractures within and between thin-bedded basalts. Core samples, together with porosity, density, and resistivity well-log data show locations where the basalt section is thin bedded and probably has from 15% to 35% void and fracture porosity. Thus, the measured permeability seems reasonable with respect to the high measured porosity. Much of the fluid flow at Site 839 could be directed through highly porous and permeable zones within and between the basalt flows and in the sediment layer just above the basalt. Thus, the permeability measurements give an indication of where and how fluid flow may occur within the oceanic crust of the Lau Basin.
