Durante la era independiente, uno de los principales rubros de la economía de la villa y ciudad de Parras, en México, fue la producción de vinos, aguardientes y licores. Durante el último tercio del siglo XIX, la demanda nacional de bebidas alcohólicas creció, aumentando así la importancia económica de Parras. Diversos cosecheros iniciaron procesos modernizadores, y entre ellos destacó la familia Madero. Pero al intentar diversificar las variedades de vitis vinífera, introdujeron al Valle de Parras la filoxera. Las centenarias variedades parrenses fueron destruidas por la plaga, y hubo que introducir la técnica del injerto. Gracias a su opulencia y a su estratégica inserción en redes empresariales y políticas, los Madero lograron sortear la crisis y mantener productiva una de las empresas vitivinícolas más antiguas de México. El presente estudio no tiene por objetivo hacer un tratado del problema de la filoxera a nivel nacional, sino puramente regional, en la época en que Parras era el principal productor de vinos y aguardientes de uva de México.

Production of peppers for deshidration (paprika) and for extraction of natural colorants is of great importance in some Mediterranean irrigation areas. In the area of Badajoz (Spain) traditional production, handling and postharvest systems are no longer feasible, although a very good quality and potential market exist for this product. All aspects of mechanized production and handling have been addressed: direct seeding and transplanting, cultivation systems and mechanical harvesting are searched to be adopted in a new production system. A study of size, shape and fruiting pattern of the new varieties was performed. A feasibility study of mechanized harvesting was also made. Results of field testing of different types of harvesters and performance of existing picking heads are presented, some of which yield a feasible solution for the growers of industry peppers in the area. The design, construction and field testing results of a new picking head based on the double-helix principle is presented.

Systems used for target localization, such as goods, individuals, or animals, commonly rely on operational means to meet the final application demands. However, what would happen if some means were powered up randomly by harvesting systems? And what if those devices not randomly powered had their duty cycles restricted? Under what conditions would such an operation be tolerable in localization services? What if the references provided by nodes in a tracking problem were distorted? Moreover, there is an underlying topic common to the previous questions regarding the transfer of conceptual models to reality in field tests: what challenges are faced upon deploying a localization network that integrates energy harvesting modules? The application scenario of the system studied is a traditional herding environment of semi domesticated reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) in northern Scandinavia. In these conditions, information on approximate locations of reindeer is as important as environmental preservation. Herders also need cost-effective devices capable of operating unattended in, sometimes, extreme weather conditions. The analyses developed are worthy not only for the specific application environment presented, but also because they may serve as an approach to performance of navigation systems in absence of reasonably accurate references like the ones of the Global Positioning System (GPS). A number of energy-harvesting solutions, like thermal and radio-frequency harvesting, do not commonly provide power beyond one milliwatt. When they do, battery buffers may be needed (as it happens with solar energy) which may raise costs and make systems more dependent on environmental temperatures. In general, given our problem, a harvesting system is needed that be capable of providing energy bursts of, at least, some milliwatts. Many works on localization problems assume that devices have certain capabilities to determine unknown locations based on range-based techniques or fingerprinting which cannot be assumed in the approach considered herein. The system presented is akin to range-free techniques, but goes to the extent of considering very low node densities: most range-free techniques are, therefore, not applicable. Animal localization, in particular, uses to be supported by accurate devices such as GPS collars which deplete batteries in, maximum, a few days. Such short-life solutions are not particularly desirable in the framework considered. In tracking, the challenge may times addressed aims at attaining high precision levels from complex reliable hardware and thorough processing techniques. One of the challenges in this Thesis is the use of equipment with just part of its facilities in permanent operation, which may yield high input noise levels in the form of distorted reference points. The solution presented integrates a kinetic harvesting module in some nodes which are expected to be a majority in the network. These modules are capable of providing power bursts of some milliwatts which suffice to meet node energy demands. The usage of harvesting modules in the aforementioned conditions makes the system less dependent on environmental temperatures as no batteries are used in nodes with harvesters--it may be also an advantage in economic terms. There is a second kind of nodes. They are battery powered (without kinetic energy harvesters), and are, therefore, dependent on temperature and battery replacements. In addition, their operation is constrained by duty cycles in order to extend node lifetime and, consequently, their autonomy. There is, in turn, a third type of nodes (hotspots) which can be static or mobile. They are also battery-powered, and are used to retrieve information from the network so that it is presented to users. The system operational chain starts at the kinetic-powered nodes broadcasting their own identifier. If an identifier is received at a battery-powered node, the latter stores it for its records. Later, as the recording node meets a hotspot, its full record of detections is transferred to the hotspot. Every detection registry comprises, at least, a node identifier and the position read from its GPS module by the battery-operated node previously to detection. The characteristics of the system presented make the aforementioned operation own certain particularities which are also studied. First, identifier transmissions are random as they depend on movements at kinetic modules--reindeer movements in our application. Not every movement suffices since it must overcome a certain energy threshold. Second, identifier transmissions may not be heard unless there is a battery-powered node in the surroundings. Third, battery-powered nodes do not poll continuously their GPS module, hence localization errors rise even more. Let's recall at this point that such behavior is tight to the aforementioned power saving policies to extend node lifetime. Last, some time is elapsed between the instant an identifier random transmission is detected and the moment the user is aware of such a detection: it takes some time to find a hotspot. Tracking is posed as a problem of a single kinetically-powered target and a population of battery-operated nodes with higher densities than before in localization. Since the latter provide their approximate positions as reference locations, the study is again focused on assessing the impact of such distorted references on performance. Unlike in localization, distance-estimation capabilities based on signal parameters are assumed in this problem. Three variants of the Kalman filter family are applied in this context: the regular Kalman filter, the alpha-beta filter, and the unscented Kalman filter. The study enclosed hereafter comprises both field tests and simulations. Field tests were used mainly to assess the challenges related to power supply and operation in extreme conditions as well as to model nodes and some aspects of their operation in the application scenario. These models are the basics of the simulations developed later. The overall system performance is analyzed according to three metrics: number of detections per kinetic node, accuracy, and latency. The links between these metrics and the operational conditions are also discussed and characterized statistically. Subsequently, such statistical characterization is used to forecast performance figures given specific operational parameters. In tracking, also studied via simulations, nonlinear relationships are found between accuracy and duty cycles and cluster sizes of battery-operated nodes. The solution presented may be more complex in terms of network structure than existing solutions based on GPS collars. However, its main gain lies on taking advantage of users' error tolerance to reduce costs and become more environmentally friendly by diminishing the potential amount of batteries that can be lost. Whether it is applicable or not depends ultimately on the conditions and requirements imposed by users' needs and operational environments, which is, as it has been explained, one of the topics of this Thesis.

Transverse galloping is a type of aeroelastic instability characterized by large amplitude, low frequency, normal to wind oscillations that appear in some elastic two-dimensional bluff bodies when subjected to a fluid flow, provided that the flow velocity exceeds a threshold critical value. Such an oscillatory motion is explained because of the energy transfer from the flow to the two-dimensional bluff body. The 7 amount of energy that can be extracted depends on the cross section of the galloping prism. Assuming that the Glauert-Den Hartog quasistatic criterion for galloping instability is satisfied in a first approximation, the suitability of a given cross section for energy harvesting is evaluated by analyzing the lateral aerodynamic force coefficient, fitting a function with a power series in tan a (a being the angle of attack) to 10 available experimental data. In this paper, a fairly large number of simple prisms (triangle, ellipse, biconvex, and rhombus cross sections, as well 11 as D-shaped bodies) is analyzed for suitability as energy harvesters. The influence of the fitting process in the energy harvesting efficiency evaluation is also demonstrated. The analysis shows that the more promising bodies are those with isosceles or approximate isosceles cross sections.

A cultura da cana-de-açúcar é a segunda maior movimentação econômica na cadeia do agronegócio no Brasil. Gera riquezas através da fabricação de açúcar, etanol e cogeração de energia elétrica, além de outros subprodutos. Considerada fonte de energia renovável, a cana-de- açúcar a princípio tinha sua imagem associada a impactos negativos principalmente devido as queimadas realizadas nas lavouras para colheita manual. Nos últimos anos, baseado em decretos e no Protocolo Agro-ambiental, essa prática vem sendo abolida. Para se manter e até mesmo aumentar o rendimento das colhedoras nos canaviais, os gestores têm adotado práticas para reduzir os terraços agrícolas, com impacto nos sistemas de conservação de solos. Assim, este trabalho teve como objetivo identificar os impactos ambientais provocados pela mecanização agrícola decorrente do mau manejo e dimensionamento dos mecanismos de conservação do solo. Neste estudo também se realizou uma análise à Equação Universal de Perdas de Solo (EUPS), como ferramenta para o dimensionamento de terraços agrícolas. O estudo foi realizado em uma microbacia hidrográfica, denominada Ribeirão da Bocaina, localizada na UGRHI-13 (Tietê - Jacaré). Foi possível identificar a variabilidade amostral do solo para o dimensionamento conservacionista, gerando curvas de nível com Desníveis Verticais (D.V) desuniformes, contrariando a sistemática atual de terraços que respeita cotas múltiplas ou mesmo dimensionamentos empiristas, segundo o conhecimento local e o histórico recente da área. Algumas sugestões também foram feitas afim de torná-la uma ferramenta ainda mais eficiente, considerando condições particulares à cultura da cana-de-açúcar, tais como a influência da palhada, sulcos de plantio e diversos tipos de terraços como meios de controle à erosão. A metodologia foi satisfatória, no que tange a compreensão pelos meios de correlação entre as práticas conservacionistas e modelos de predição de perda de solo, trazendo luz à ciência na interpretação das ferramentas existentes e as lacunas a serem preenchidas.

The effects of harvesting of callianassid shrimp (Trypaea australiensis) on the abundance and composition of macrobenthic assemblages in unvegetated sediments of a subtropical coastal embayment in Queensland, Australia were examined using a combination of sampling and manipulative experiments. First, the abundance and composition of the benthic infauna in an area regularly used for the collection of shrimp for bait by recreational anglers was compared with multiple reference areas. Second, a BACI design, with multiple reference areas, was used to examine the short-term effects of harvesting on the benthic assemblages from an intensive commercialised fishing competition. Third, a large-scale, controlled manipulative experiment, where shrimp were harvested from 10,000 m(2) plots at intensities commensurate with those from recreational and commercial operators, was done to determine the impacts on different components of the infaunal assemblage. Only a few benthic taxa showed significant declines in abundance in response to the removal of ghost shrimp from the unvegetated sediments. There was evidence, however, of more subtle effects with changes in the degree of spatial variation (patchiness) of several taxa as a result of harvesting.. Groups such as capitellid polychaetes, gammarid amphipods and some bivalves were significantly more patchy in their distribution in areas subjected to harvesting than reference areas, at a scale of tens of metres. This scale corresponds to the patterns of movement and activity of recreational harvesters working in these areas. In contrast, patchiness in the abundance of ghost shrimp decreased significantly under harvesting at scales of hundreds of metres, in response to harvesters focussing their efforts on areas with greater numbers of burrow entrances, leading to a more even distribution of the animals. Controlled experimental harvesting caused declines in the abundance of soldier crabs (Mictyris longicarpus), polychaetes and amphipods and an increase in the spatial patchiness of polychaetes. Populations of ghost shrimp were, however, resilient to harvesting over extended periods of time. In conclusion, harvesting of ghost shrimp for bait by recreational and commercial fishers causes significant but localised impacts on a limited range of benthic fauna in unvegetated sediments, including changes in the degree of spatial patchiness in their distribution. Although Mauritia flexuosa (Arecaceae) plays a pivotal role in the ecology and economy of the Amazon, and occurs in a variety of habitats, little is known about the influence of habitat on the reproductive biology of this palm. My dissertation focuses on the reproductive biology of M. flexuosa in three habitats in Roraima, Brazil: undisturbed forest, undisturbed forest-savanna ecotone, and savanna disturbed by plantations of the exotic tree, Acacia mangium. First, I calculated sex ratios and linked precipitation patterns with phenology. Sex ratios were female-biased. Precipitation was negatively associated with flowering, and positively associated with fruiting. Habitat appears to have no significant influence on phenology of M. flexuosa, although short-term climate variation may affect phenology of this species. Second, I examined floral biology, observed floral visitors, and performed exclusion experiments to determine the pollination system of M. flexuosa. Fruit set did not differ significantly between the visitor exclusion treatment and the control, but was significantly lowest in the wind + visitor exclusion treatment, suggesting that this dioecious palm is anemophilous, independent of habitat. Third, I identified the abiotic and biotic factors explaining variation in fruit mass, seed mass, seed number per fruit, and total fruit yield among habitats. Soil moisture and flooding during the wet season were the best predictors of fruit and seed output. The number of leaves, diameter at breast height, and height were all accurate predictors of reproductive output, but crown volume did not accurately predict fruit yields. Results re-evaluate traditional assumptions about wind-pollination in the tropics, and highlight abiotic and biotic factors responsible for variation in reproductive output of M. flexuosa, with implications for effective management of this palm. Finally, I interviewed harvesters and vendors to document the traditional knowledge and market dynamics of the fruit of M. flexuosa, buriti. Traditional knowledge corroborated results from scientific studies. Vendors argued that the price of buriti must increase, and must fluctuate with varying supply. With appropriate economic incentives to vendors/harvesters, Roraima may expand its market infrastructure for buriti, effectively stimulating the regional economy and practicing sustainable harvesting.

Pour rester compétitives, les entreprises forestières cherchent à contrôler leurs coûts d’approvisionnement. Les abatteuses-façonneuses sont pourvues d’ordinateurs embarqués qui permettent le contrôle et l’automatisation de certaines fonctions. Or, ces technologies ne sont pas couramment utilisées et sont dans le meilleur des cas sous-utilisées. Tandis que l’industrie manifeste un intérêt grandissant pour l’utilisation de ces ordinateurs, peu de travaux de recherche ont porté sur l’apport en productivité et en conformité aux spécifications de façonnage découlant de l’usage de ces systèmes. L’objectif de l’étude était de mesurer les impacts des trois degrés d’automatisation (manuel, semi-automatique et automatique) sur la productivité (m3/hmp) et le taux de conformité des longueurs et des diamètre d’écimage des billes façonnées (%). La collecte de données s’est déroulée dans les secteurs de récolte de Produits forestiers résolu au nord du Lac St-Jean entre les mois de janvier et d’août 2015. Un dispositif en blocs complets a été mis en place pour chacun des cinq opérateurs ayant participé à l’étude. Un seuil de 5 % a été employé pour la réalisation de l’analyse des variances, après la réalisation de contrastes. Un seul cas a présenté un écart significatif de productivité attribuable au changement du degré d’automatisation employé, tandis qu’aucune différence significative n’a été détectée pour la conformité des diamètres d’écimage; des tendances ont toutefois été constatées. Les conformités de longueur obtenues par deux opérateurs ont présenté des écarts significatifs. Ceux-ci opérant sur deux équipements distincts, cela laisse entrevoir l’impact que peut aussi avoir l’opérateur sur le taux de conformité des longueurs.

Emerging infectious diseases are a growing concern in wildlife conservation. Documenting outbreak patterns and determining the ecological drivers of transmission risk are fundamental to predicting disease spread and assessing potential impacts on population viability. However, evaluating disease in wildlife populations requires expansive surveillance networks that often do not exist in remote and developing areas. Here, we describe the results of a community-based research initiative conducted in collaboration with indigenous harvesters, the Inuit, in response to a new series of Avian Cholera outbreaks affecting Common Eiders (Somateria mollissima) and other comingling species in the Canadian Arctic. Avian Cholera is a virulent disease of birds caused by the bacterium Pasteurella multocida. Common Eiders are a valuable subsistence resource for Inuit, who hunt the birds for meat and visit breeding colonies during the summer to collect eggs and feather down for use in clothing and blankets. We compiled the observations of harvesters about the growing epidemic and with their assistance undertook field investigation of 131 colonies distributed over >1200 km of coastline in the affected region. Thirteen locations were identified where Avian Cholera outbreaks have occurred since 2004. Mortality rates ranged from 1% to 43% of the local breeding population at these locations. Using a species-habitat model (Maxent), we determined that the distribution of outbreak events has not been random within the study area and that colony size, vegetation cover, and a measure of host crowding in shared wetlands were significantly correlated to outbreak risk. In addition, outbreak locations have been spatially structured with respect to hypothesized introduction foci and clustered along the migration corridor linking Arctic breeding areas with wintering areas in Atlantic Canada. At present, Avian Cholera remains a localized threat to Common Eider populations in the Arctic; however expanded, community-based surveillance will be required to track disease spread.

Physical control of water hyacinth consists of removing the plants from the water by hand or machines. It is considered over effetive because it involves removing the whole plants from water. The first attempt on physical control was in 1992 when weed infestation was causing serious problems to the fishing communities in Lake Kyoga. The fishermen had problems of accessing the lake as huge masses of mobile weed blocked landing sites. Furthermore, the fishers lost their nets, which were swept away by mobile water hyacinth. As a result, an integrated control strategy involving physical control (manual and mechanical removal) was put in place. Through this method, the fishers were able to open up access routes to fishing grounds even though weed mats often reblocked the access routes. In the infested lakes, manual removal offered remedial relief to fish Iandings and other access sites. Sites of strategic importance such as hydro-electric power generation dam, water intake points and docking points which had large masses of water hyacinth required heavy machinery and mechanical harvesters were used at these sites.

The present research, undertaken in a mangrove swamp in northeastern Brazil (Mamanguape River Estuary), examined the factors that led to the overwhelming acceptance of the tangle-netting technique by crab harvesters in detriment to the now illegal tamping technique. Both techniques are the only ones currently used at our study site and in many other areas in Brazil, despite being prohibited by law. Data were collected through direct observations to determine capture efficiency, productivity, daily production, selectivity, and harvesting effort, and through interviews with crab harvesters, focusing on their perceptions of the capture techniques, the conditions of crab stocks and the sales price of a dozen crabs. Our results indicated that the two capture techniques did not significantly differ in terms of their efficiency or productivity, but daily production rates differed significantly, being greater using tangle-netting. The tangle-netting permits a greater harvesting effort (6 hours and 34 min) compared to tamping (4 hours and 19 min). Tangle-netting is also less selective than tamping indicated by the larger number of captured smaller specimens, including females. This results in a lower average sales price for a dozen crabs caught by tangle-netting (US$ 0.95) compared to tamping (US$ 1.02). The greater daily production of crab harvesters using the tangle-netting technique nevertheless increased their net gain, explaining their preference for this method, Given that tangle-netting results in greater harvesting pressure but lower selectivity compared to tamping, it may potentially be less sustainable. All of the crab harvesters interviewed having more than 20 years of experience (n = 34) stated they perceived that stocks of U. cordatus had become reduced over the last 20 years, together with average crab sizes. It is now important to examine the structure of the local U. cordatus population and to assess its fishery to allow evaluating whether the illegal, but prominent tangle-netting and tamping mangrove crab capture techniques are sustainable or not. We further suggest improving the dialogue between decision makers and fishermen, which barely exists to date, to initiate a discussion about possible ways of resolving the current situation of illegality of the fishermen. This will be key to achieving effective sustainable co-management of this important natural mangrove forest resource.

El olivar español es el primer productor mundial de aceite (40%) y de aceituna de mesa (25%). La mayor parte del olivar no es rentable y es clave reducir sus costes. Dado que la recolección supone del orden del 50% de su valor, en ella se deben centrar los esfuerzos. No existe una solución única válida para la recolección de todos los tipos de olivar, aunque, en olivares modernos de media y de alta densidad existe un alto grado de mecanización. Sin embargo, el olivar tradicional, que representa casi el 70% del total, no dispone de una cosechadora. Su introducción supondría un cambio tecnológico y una innovación clave para este tipo de olivar. La presente memoria expone los resultados obtenidos en I+D+i con el objetivo principal de desarrollar la primera cosechadora para la recolección integral de olivar tradicional. En una primera fase, se realizó un estudio de un sistema sacudidor de copa procedente de cítricos para su aplicación a olivar, determinando las características de la sacudida y del funcionamiento de la máquina en campo. Posteriormente, se completaron estos estudios, determinado la forma y zona de caída de los frutos. Por último, se desarrolló un sistema de recepción, logística, limpieza y almacenaje del fruto para incorporación de, alcanzándose resultados muy prometedores en la recolección integral del árbol. En fases posteriores, se realizó una caracterización de árboles y plantaciones tradicionales para poder realizar un diseño específico de sistema de derribo adaptado a esta tipología. Tras un proceso de investigación sobre los principios de la sacudida de la copa y el desprendimiento de los frutos, se avanzó en el diseño y fabricación de nuevos sistemas de sacudida de copa, así como en el desarrollo de tecnología para el copiado automático del contorno del árbol. Los nuevos sistemas para derribar las aceitunas alcanzaron resultados prometedores para su aplicación al olivar tradicional, adaptándose a su morfología y a las características singulares de sus árboles. Finalmente, fruto del trabajo realizado en la línea 1 del convenio Mecaolivar, toda la investigación desarrollada se materializó en la fabricación de un prototipo de cosechadora con sistema sacudidor de copa para el olivar tradicional. Estas máquinas demuestran la viabilidad de la cosecha integral de los olivos tradicionales.

In recent decades, electrospinning of nanofibers has progressed very rapidly in both scientific and technological aspects, and electrospun nanofibers have shown enormous potential for various applications. In particular, electrospun nanofibers have significantly enhanced the application performance of many electronic devices, such as solar cells, mechanical-to-electric energy harvesters, rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, sensors, field-effect transistors, diodes, photodetectors, and electrochromic devices. This chapter provides a comprehensive summary on the recent progress in the application of electrospun nanofibers in electronic devices.
