Cancer biology is a complex and expanding field of science study. Due its complexity, there is a strong motivation to integrate many fields of knowledge to study cancer biology, and biological stoichiometry can make this. Biological stoichiometry is the study of the balance of multiple chemical elements in biological systems. A key idea in biological stoichiometry is the growth rate hypothesis, which states that variation in the carbon:nitrogen:phosphorus stoichiometry of living things is associated with growth rate because of the elevated demands for phosphorusrich ribosomal RNA and other elements necessary to protein synthesis. As tumor cells has high rate proliferation, the growth rate hypothesis can be used in cancer study. In this work the dynamic of two tumors (primary and secondary) and the chemical elements carbon and nitrogen are simulate and analyzed through mathematical models that utilize as central idea biological stoichiometry. Background: The study of myofiber reorganization in the remote zone after myocardial infarction has been performed in 2D. Microstructural reorganization in remodeled hearts, however, can only be fully appreciated by considering myofibers as continuous 3D entities. The aim of this study was therefore to develop a technique for quantitative 3D diffusion CMR tractography of the heart, and to apply this method to quantify fiber architecture in the remote zone of remodeled hearts. Methods: Diffusion Tensor CMR of normal human, sheep, and rat hearts, as well as infarcted sheep hearts was performed ex vivo. Fiber tracts were generated with a fourth-order Runge-Kutta integration technique and classified statistically by the median, mean, maximum, or minimum helix angle (HA) along the tract. An index of tract coherence was derived from the relationship between these HA statistics. Histological validation was performed using phase-contrast microscopy. Results: In normal hearts, the subendocardial and subepicardial myofibers had a positive and negative HA, respectively, forming a symmetric distribution around the midmyocardium. However, in the remote zone of the infarcted hearts, a significant positive shift in HA was observed. The ratio between negative and positive HA variance was reduced from 0.96 +/- 0.16 in normal hearts to 0.22 +/- 0.08 in the remote zone of the remodeled hearts (p<0.05). This was confirmed histologically by the reduction of HA in the subepicardium from -52.03 degrees +/- 2.94 degrees in normal hearts to -37.48 degrees +/- 4.05 degrees in the remote zone of the remodeled hearts (p < 0.05). Conclusions: A significant reorganization of the 3D fiber continuum is observed in the remote zone of remodeled hearts. The positive (rightward) shift in HA in the remote zone is greatest in the subepicardium, but involves all layers of the myocardium. Tractography-based quantification, performed here for the first time in remodeled hearts, may provide a framework for assessing regional changes in the left ventricle following infarction.

The boundary layer over concave surfaces can be unstable due to centrifugal forces, giving rise to Goertler vortices. These vortices create two regions in the spanwise direction—the upwash and downwash regions. The downwash region is responsible for compressing the boundary layer toward the wall, increasing the heat transfer rate. The upwash region does the opposite. In the nonlinear development of the Goertler vortices, it can be observed that the upwash region becomes narrow and the spanwise–average heat transfer rate is higher than that for a Blasius boundary layer. This paper analyzes the influence of the spanwise wavelength of the Goertler the heat transfer. The equation is written in vorticity-velocity formulation. The time integration is done via a classical fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. The spatial derivatives are calculated using high-order compact finite difference and spectral methods. Three different wavelengths are analyzed. The results show that steady Goertler flow can increase the heat transfer rates to values close to the values of turbulence, without the existence of a secondary instability. The viscoelasticity of mammalian lung is determined by the mechanical properties and structural regulation of the airway smooth muscle (ASM). The exposure to polluted air may deteriorate these properties with harmful consequences to individual health. Formaldehyde (FA) is an important indoor pollutant found among volatile organic compounds. This pollutant permeates through the smooth muscle tissue forming covalent bonds between proteins in the extracellular matrix and intracellular protein structure changing mechanical properties of ASM and inducing asthma symptoms, such as airway hyperresponsiveness, even at low concentrations. In the experimental scenario, the mechanical effect of FA is the stiffening of the tissue, but the mechanism behind this effect is not fully understood. Thus, the aim of this study is to reproduce the mechanical behavior of the ASM, such as contraction and stretching, under FA action or not. For this, it was created a two-dimensional viscoelastic network model based on Voronoi tessellation solved using Runge-Kutta method of fourth order. The equilibrium configuration was reached when the forces in different parts of the network were equal. This model simulates the mechanical behavior of ASM through of a network of dashpots and springs. This dashpot-spring mechanical coupling mimics the composition of the actomyosin machinery of ASM through the contraction of springs to a minimum length. We hypothesized that formation of covalent bonds, due to the FA action, can be represented in the model by a simple change in the elastic constant of the springs, while the action of methacholine (MCh) reduce the equilibrium length of the spring. A sigmoid curve of tension as a function of MCh doses was obtained, showing increased tension when the muscle strip was exposed to FA. Our simulations suggest that FA, at a concentration of 0.1 ppm, can affect the elastic properties of the smooth muscle ¯bers by a factor of 120%. We also analyze the dynamic mechanical properties, observing the viscous and elastic behavior of the network. Finally, the proposed model, although simple, incorporates the phenomenology of both MCh and FA and reproduces experimental results observed with in vitro exposure of smooth muscle to FA. Thus, this new mechanical approach incorporates several well know features of the contractile system of the cells in a tissue level model. The model can also be used in different biological scales.

The last decades have seen an unrivaled growth and diffusion of mobile telecommunications. Several standards have been developed to this purposes, from GSM mobile phone communications to WLAN IEEE 802.11, providing different services for the the transmission of signals ranging from voice to high data rate digital communications and Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB). In this wide research and market field, this thesis focuses on Ultra Wideband (UWB) communications, an emerging technology for providing very high data rate transmissions over very short distances. In particular the presented research deals with the circuit design of enabling blocks for MB-OFDM UWB CMOS single-chip transceivers, namely the frequency synthesizer and the transmission mixer and power amplifier. First we discuss three different models for the simulation of chargepump phase-locked loops, namely the continuous time s-domain and discrete time z-domain approximations and the exact semi-analytical time-domain model. The limitations of the two approximated models are analyzed in terms of error in the computed settling time as a function of loop parameters, deriving practical conditions under which the different models are reliable for fast settling PLLs up to fourth order. Besides, a phase noise analysis method based upon the time-domain model is introduced and compared to the results obtained by means of the s-domain model. We compare the three models over the simulation of a fast switching PLL to be integrated in a frequency synthesizer for WiMedia MB-OFDM UWB systems. In the second part, the theoretical analysis is applied to the design of a 60mW 3.4 to 9.2GHz 12 Bands frequency synthesizer for MB-OFDM UWB based on two wide-band PLLs. The design is presented and discussed up to layout level. A test chip has been implemented in TSMC CMOS 90nm technology, measured data is provided. The functionality of the circuit is proved and specifications are met with state-of-the-art area occupation and power consumption. The last part of the thesis deals with the design of a transmission mixer and a power amplifier for MB-OFDM UWB band group 1. The design has been carried on up to layout level in ST Microlectronics 65nm CMOS technology. Main characteristics of the systems are the wideband behavior (1.6 GHz of bandwidth) and the constant behavior over process parameters, temperature and supply voltage thanks to the design of dedicated adaptive biasing circuits.

In dieser Arbeit wurde die elektromagnetische Pionproduktion unter der Annahme der Isospinsymmetrie der starken Wechselwirkung im Rahmen der manifest Lorentz-invarianten chiralen Störungstheorie in einer Einschleifenrechnung bis zur Ordnung vier untersucht. Dazu wurden auf der Grundlage des Mathematica-Pakets FeynCalc Algorithmen zur Berechnung der Pionproduktionsamplitude entwickelt. Bis einschließlich der Ordnung vier tragen insgesamt 105 Feynmandiagramme bei, die sich in 20 Baumdiagramme und 85 Schleifendiagramme unterteilen lassen. Von den 20 Baumdiagrammen wiederum sind 16 als Polterme und vier als Kontaktgraphen zu klassifizieren; bei den Schleifendiagrammen tragen 50 Diagramme ab der dritten Ordnung und 35 Diagramme ab der vierten Ordnung bei. In der Einphotonaustauschnäherung lässt sich die Pionproduktionsamplitude als ein Produkt des Polarisationsvektors des (virtuellen) Photons und des Übergangsstrommatrixelements parametrisieren, wobei letzteres alle Abhängigkeiten der starken Wechselwirkung beinhaltet und wo somit die chirale Störungstheorie ihren Eingang findet. Der Polarisationsvektor hingegen hängt von dem leptonischen Vertex und dem Photonpropagator ab und ist aus der QED bekannt. Weiterhin lässt sich das Übergangsstrommatrixelement in sechs eichinvariante Amplituden zerlegen, die sich im Rahmen der Isospinsymmetrie jeweils wiederum in drei Isospinamplituden zerlegen lassen. Linearkombinationen dieser Isospinamplituden erlauben letztlich die Beschreibung der physikalischen Amplituden. Die in dieser Rechnung auftretenden Einschleifenintegrale wurden numerisch mittels des Programms LoopTools berechnet. Im Fall tensorieller Integrale erfolgte zunächst eine Zerlegung gemäß der Methode von Passarino und Veltman. Da die somit erhaltenen Ergebnisse jedoch i.a. noch nicht das chirale Zählschema erfüllen, wurde die entsprechende Renormierung mittels der reformulierten Infrarotregularisierung vorgenommen. Zu diesem Zweck wurde ein Verfahren entwickelt, welches die Abzugsterme automatisiert bestimmt. Die schließlich erhaltenen Isospinamplituden wurden in das Programm MAID eingebaut. In diesem Programm wurden als Test (Ergebnisse bis Ordnung drei) die s-Wellenmultipole E_{0+} und L_{0+} in der Schwellenregion berechnet. Die Ergebnisse wurden sowohl mit Messdaten als auch mit den Resultaten des "klassischen" MAID verglichen, wobei sich i. a. gute Übereinstimmungen im Rahmen der Fehler ergaben.

Relativistic effects need to be considered in quantum-chemical calculations on systems including heavy elements or when aiming at high accuracy for molecules containing only lighter elements. In the latter case, consideration of relativistic effects via perturbation theory is an attractive option. Among the available techniques, Direct Perturbation Theory (DPT) in its lowest order (DPT2) has become a standard tool for the calculation of relativistic corrections to energies and properties.In this work, the DPT treatment is extended to the next order (DPT4). It is demonstrated that the DPT4 correction can be obtained as a second derivative of the energy with respect to the relativistic perturbation parameter. Accordingly, differentiation of a suitable Lagrangian, thereby taking into account all constraints on the wave function, provides analytic expressions for the fourth-order energy corrections. The latter have been implemented at the Hartree-Fock level and within second-order Møller-Plesset perturbaton theory using standard analytic second-derivative techniques into the CFOUR program package. For closed-shell systems, the DPT4 corrections consist of higher-order scalar-relativistic effects as well as spin-orbit corrections with the latter appearing here for the first time in the DPT series.Relativistic corrections are reported for energies as well as for first-order electrical properties and compared to results from rigorous four-component benchmark calculations in order to judge the accuracy and convergence of the DPT expansion for both the scalar-relativistic as well as the spin-orbit contributions. Additionally, the importance of relativistic effects to the bromine and iodine quadrupole-coupling tensors is investigated in a joint experimental and theoretical study concerning the rotational spectra of CH2BrF, CHBrF2, and CH2FI.

The Scilla rock avalanche occurred on 6 February 1783 along the coast of the Calabria region (southern Italy), close to the Messina Strait. It was triggered by a mainshock of the Terremoto delle Calabrie seismic sequence, and it induced a tsunami wave responsible for more than 1500 casualties along the neighboring Marina Grande beach. The main goal of this work is the application of semi-analtycal and numerical models to simulate this event. The first one is a MATLAB code expressly created for this work that solves the equations of motion for sliding particles on a two-dimensional surface through a fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. The second one is a code developed by the Tsunami Research Team of the Department of Physics and Astronomy (DIFA) of the Bologna University that describes a slide as a chain of blocks able to interact while sliding down over a slope and adopts a Lagrangian point of view. A wide description of landslide phenomena and in particular of landslides induced by earthquakes and with tsunamigenic potential is proposed in the first part of the work. Subsequently, the physical and mathematical background is presented; in particular, a detailed study on derivatives discratization is provided. Later on, a description of the dynamics of a point-mass sliding on a surface is proposed together with several applications of numerical and analytical models over ideal topographies. In the last part, the dynamics of points sliding on a surface and interacting with each other is proposed. Similarly, different application on an ideal topography are shown. Finally, the applications on the 1783 Scilla event are shown and discussed.

El objetivo de esta Tesis ha sido la consecución de simulaciones en tiempo real de vehículos industriales modelizados como sistemas multicuerpo complejos formados por sólidos rígidos. Para el desarrollo de un programa de simulación deben considerarse cuatro aspectos fundamentales: la modelización del sistema multicuerpo (tipos de coordenadas, pares ideales o impuestos mediante fuerzas), la formulación a utilizar para plantear las ecuaciones diferenciales del movimiento (coordenadas dependientes o independientes, métodos globales o topológicos, forma de imponer las ecuaciones de restricción), el método de integración numérica para resolver estas ecuaciones en el tiempo (integradores explícitos o implícitos) y finalmente los detalles de la implementación realizada (lenguaje de programación, librerías matemáticas, técnicas de paralelización). Estas cuatro etapas están interrelacionadas entre sí y todas han formado parte de este trabajo. Desde la generación de modelos de una furgoneta y de camión con semirremolque, el uso de tres formulaciones dinámicas diferentes, la integración de las ecuaciones diferenciales del movimiento mediante métodos explícitos e implícitos, hasta el uso de funciones BLAS, de técnicas de matrices sparse y la introducción de paralelización para utilizar los distintos núcleos del procesador. El trabajo presentado en esta Tesis ha sido organizado en 8 capítulos, dedicándose el primero de ellos a la Introducción. En el Capítulo 2 se presentan dos formulaciones semirrecursivas diferentes, de las cuales la primera está basada en una doble transformación de velocidades, obteniéndose las ecuaciones diferenciales del movimiento en función de las aceleraciones relativas independientes. La integración numérica de estas ecuaciones se ha realizado con el método de Runge-Kutta explícito de cuarto orden. La segunda formulación está basada en coordenadas relativas dependientes, imponiendo las restricciones por medio de penalizadores en posición y corrigiendo las velocidades y aceleraciones mediante métodos de proyección. En este segundo caso la integración de las ecuaciones del movimiento se ha llevado a cabo mediante el integrador implícito HHT (Hilber, Hughes and Taylor), perteneciente a la familia de integradores estructurales de Newmark. En el Capítulo 3 se introduce la tercera formulación utilizada en esta Tesis. En este caso las uniones entre los sólidos del sistema se ha realizado mediante uniones flexibles, lo que obliga a imponer los pares por medio de fuerzas. Este tipo de uniones impide trabajar con coordenadas relativas, por lo que la posición del sistema y el planteamiento de las ecuaciones del movimiento se ha realizado utilizando coordenadas Cartesianas y parámetros de Euler. En esta formulación global se introducen las restricciones mediante fuerzas (con un planteamiento similar al de los penalizadores) y la estabilización del proceso de integración numérica se realiza también mediante proyecciones de velocidades y aceleraciones. En el Capítulo 4 se presenta una revisión de las principales herramientas y estrategias utilizadas para aumentar la eficiencia de las implementaciones de los distintos algoritmos. En primer lugar se incluye una serie de consideraciones básicas para aumentar la eficiencia numérica de las implementaciones. A continuación se mencionan las principales características de los analizadores de códigos utilizados y también las librerías matemáticas utilizadas para resolver los problemas de álgebra lineal tanto con matrices densas como sparse. Por último se desarrolla con un cierto detalle el tema de la paralelización en los actuales procesadores de varios núcleos, describiendo para ello el patrón empleado y las características más importantes de las dos herramientas propuestas, OpenMP y las TBB de Intel. Hay que señalar que las características de los sistemas multicuerpo problemas de pequeño tamaño, frecuente uso de la recursividad, y repetición intensiva en el tiempo de los cálculos con fuerte dependencia de los resultados anteriores dificultan extraordinariamente el uso de técnicas de paralelización frente a otras áreas de la mecánica computacional, tales como por ejemplo el cálculo por elementos finitos. Basándose en los conceptos mencionados en el Capítulo 4, el Capítulo 5 está dividido en tres secciones, una para cada formulación propuesta en esta Tesis. En cada una de estas secciones se describen los detalles de cómo se han realizado las distintas implementaciones propuestas para cada algoritmo y qué herramientas se han utilizado para ello. En la primera sección se muestra el uso de librerías numéricas para matrices densas y sparse en la formulación topológica semirrecursiva basada en la doble transformación de velocidades. En la segunda se describe la utilización de paralelización mediante OpenMP y TBB en la formulación semirrecursiva con penalizadores y proyecciones. Por último, se describe el uso de técnicas de matrices sparse y paralelización en la formulación global con uniones flexibles y parámetros de Euler. El Capítulo 6 describe los resultados alcanzados mediante las formulaciones e implementaciones descritas previamente. Este capítulo comienza con una descripción de la modelización y topología de los dos vehículos estudiados. El primer modelo es un vehículo de dos ejes del tipo chasis-cabina o furgoneta, perteneciente a la gama de vehículos de carga medianos. El segundo es un vehículo de cinco ejes que responde al modelo de un camión o cabina con semirremolque, perteneciente a la categoría de vehículos industriales pesados. En este capítulo además se realiza un estudio comparativo entre las simulaciones de estos vehículos con cada una de las formulaciones utilizadas y se presentan de modo cuantitativo los efectos de las mejoras alcanzadas con las distintas estrategias propuestas en esta Tesis. Con objeto de extraer conclusiones más fácilmente y para evaluar de un modo más objetivo las mejoras introducidas en la Tesis, todos los resultados de este capítulo se han obtenido con el mismo computador, que era el top de la gama Intel Xeon en 2007, pero que hoy día está ya algo obsoleto. Por último los Capítulos 7 y 8 están dedicados a las conclusiones finales y las futuras líneas de investigación que pueden derivar del trabajo realizado en esta Tesis. Los objetivos de realizar simulaciones en tiempo real de vehículos industriales de gran complejidad han sido alcanzados con varias de las formulaciones e implementaciones desarrolladas. ABSTRACT The objective of this Dissertation has been the achievement of real time simulations of industrial vehicles modeled as complex multibody systems made up by rigid bodies. For the development of a simulation program, four main aspects must be considered: the modeling of the multibody system (types of coordinates, ideal joints or imposed by means of forces), the formulation to be used to set the differential equations of motion (dependent or independent coordinates, global or topological methods, ways to impose constraints equations), the method of numerical integration to solve these equations in time (explicit or implicit integrators) and the details of the implementation carried out (programming language, mathematical libraries, parallelization techniques). These four stages are interrelated and all of them are part of this work. They involve the generation of models for a van and a semitrailer truck, the use of three different dynamic formulations, the integration of differential equations of motion through explicit and implicit methods, the use of BLAS functions and sparse matrix techniques, and the introduction of parallelization to use the different processor cores. The work presented in this Dissertation has been structured in eight chapters, the first of them being the Introduction. In Chapter 2, two different semi-recursive formulations are shown, of which the first one is based on a double velocity transformation, thus getting the differential equations of motion as a function of the independent relative accelerations. The numerical integration of these equations has been made with the Runge-Kutta explicit method of fourth order. The second formulation is based on dependent relative coordinates, imposing the constraints by means of position penalty coefficients and correcting the velocities and accelerations by projection methods. In this second case, the integration of the motion equations has been carried out by means of the HHT implicit integrator (Hilber, Hughes and Taylor), which belongs to the Newmark structural integrators family. In Chapter 3, the third formulation used in this Dissertation is presented. In this case, the joints between the bodies of the system have been considered as flexible joints, with forces used to impose the joint conditions. This kind of union hinders to work with relative coordinates, so the position of the system bodies and the setting of the equations of motion have been carried out using Cartesian coordinates and Euler parameters. In this global formulation, constraints are introduced through forces (with a similar approach to the penalty coefficients) are presented. The stabilization of the numerical integration is carried out also by velocity and accelerations projections. In Chapter 4, a revision of the main computer tools and strategies used to increase the efficiency of the implementations of the algorithms is presented. First of all, some basic considerations to increase the numerical efficiency of the implementations are included. Then the main characteristics of the code’ analyzers used and also the mathematical libraries used to solve linear algebra problems (both with dense and sparse matrices) are mentioned. Finally, the topic of parallelization in current multicore processors is developed thoroughly. For that, the pattern used and the most important characteristics of the tools proposed, OpenMP and Intel TBB, are described. It needs to be highlighted that the characteristics of multibody systems small size problems, frequent recursion use and intensive repetition along the time of the calculation with high dependencies of the previous results complicate extraordinarily the use of parallelization techniques against other computational mechanics areas, as the finite elements computation. Based on the concepts mentioned in Chapter 4, Chapter 5 is divided into three sections, one for each formulation proposed in this Dissertation. In each one of these sections, the details of how these different proposed implementations have been made for each algorithm and which tools have been used are described. In the first section, it is shown the use of numerical libraries for dense and sparse matrices in the semirecursive topological formulation based in the double velocity transformation. In the second one, the use of parallelization by means OpenMP and TBB is depicted in the semi-recursive formulation with penalization and projections. Lastly, the use of sparse matrices and parallelization techniques is described in the global formulation with flexible joints and Euler parameters. Chapter 6 depicts the achieved results through the formulations and implementations previously described. This chapter starts with a description of the modeling and topology of the two vehicles studied. The first model is a two-axle chassis-cabin or van like vehicle, which belongs to the range of medium charge vehicles. The second one is a five-axle vehicle belonging to the truck or cabin semi-trailer model, belonging to the heavy industrial vehicles category. In this chapter, a comparative study is done between the simulations of these vehicles with each one of the formulations used and the improvements achieved are presented in a quantitative way with the different strategies proposed in this Dissertation. With the aim of deducing the conclusions more easily and to evaluate in a more objective way the improvements introduced in the Dissertation, all the results of this chapter have been obtained with the same computer, which was the top one among the Intel Xeon range in 2007, but which is rather obsolete today. Finally, Chapters 7 and 8 are dedicated to the final conclusions and the future research projects that can be derived from the work presented in this Dissertation. The objectives of doing real time simulations in high complex industrial vehicles have been achieved with the formulations and implementations developed.

The paper provides a method applicable for the determination of flight loads for maneuvering aircraft, in which aerodynamic loads are calculated based on doublet lattice method, which contains three primary steps. Firstly, non-dimensional stability and control derivative coefficients are obtained through solving unsteady aerodynamics in subsonic flow based on a doublet lattice technical. These stability and control derivative coefficients are used in second step. Secondly, the simulation of aircraft dynamic maneuvers is completed utilizing fourth order Runge-Kutta method to solve motion equations in different maneuvers to gain response parameters of aircraft due to the motion of control surfaces. Finally, the response results calculated in the second step are introduced to the calculation of aerodynamic loads. Thus, total loads and loads distribution on different components of aircraft are obtained. According to the above method, abrupt pitching maneuvers, rolling maneuvers and yawing maneuvers are investigated respectively.

In this paper three p-adaptation strategies based on the minimization of the truncation error are presented for high order discontinuous Galerkin methods. The truncation error is approximated by means of a ? -estimation procedure and enables the identification of mesh regions that require adaptation. Three adaptation strategies are developed and termed a posteriori, quasi-a priori and quasi-a priori corrected. All strategies require fine solutions, which are obtained by enriching the polynomial order, but while the former needs time converged solutions, the last two rely on non-converged solutions, which lead to faster computations. In addition, the high order method permits the spatial decoupling for the estimated errors and enables anisotropic p-adaptation. These strategies are verified and compared in terms of accuracy and computational cost for the Euler and the compressible Navier?Stokes equations. It is shown that the two quasi- a priori methods achieve a significant reduction in computational cost when compared to a uniform polynomial enrichment. Namely, for a viscous boundary layer flow, we obtain a speedup of 6.6 and 7.6 for the quasi-a priori and quasi-a priori corrected approaches, respectively.

This thesis is concerned with the measurement of the characteristics of nonlinear systems by crosscorrelation, using pseudorandom input signals based on m sequences. The systems are characterised by Volterra series, and analytical expressions relating the rth order Volterra kernel to r-dimensional crosscorrelation measurements are derived. It is shown that the two-dimensional crosscorrelation measurements are related to the corresponding second order kernel values by a set of equations which may be structured into a number of independent subsets. The m sequence properties determine how the maximum order of the subsets for off-diagonal values is related to the upper bound of the arguments for nonzero kernel values. The upper bound of the arguments is used as a performance index, and the performance of antisymmetric pseudorandom binary, ternary and quinary signals is investigated. The performance indices obtained above are small in relation to the periods of the corresponding signals. To achieve higher performance with ternary signals, a method is proposed for combining the estimates of the second order kernel values so that the effects of some of the undesirable nonzero values in the fourth order autocorrelation function of the input signal are removed. The identification of the dynamics of two-input, single-output systems with multiplicative nonlinearity is investigated. It is shown that the characteristics of such a system may be determined by crosscorrelation experiments using phase-shifted versions of a common signal as inputs. The effects of nonlinearities on the estimates of system weighting functions obtained by crosscorrelation are also investigated. Results obtained by correlation testing of an industrial process are presented, and the differences between theoretical and experimental results discussed for this case;

In this letter, we report on the inscription of a fourth-order fiber Bragg grating made line-by-line in the optical fiber using a femtosecond laser. Strong Bragg resonance (~17 dB) and low insertion loss (~0.5 dB) were obtained with only 2000 periods. Measured refractive index change of these inscribed lines reaches up to 7 × 10-3. The grating was fully characterized and the low insertion loss together with low polarization-dependent loss were realized compared to gratings made by the point-by-point method. The high temperature annealing experiment shows the grating can survive up to at least 800°C.

In this paper, we consider analytical and numerical solutions to the Dirichlet boundary-value problem for the biharmonic partial differential equation on a disc of finite radius in the plane. The physical interpretation of these solutions is that of the harmonic oscillations of a thin, clamped plate. For the linear, fourth-order, biharmonic partial differential equation in the plane, it is well known that the solution method of separation in polar coordinates is not possible, in general. However, in this paper, for circular domains in the plane, it is shown that a method, here called quasi-separation of variables, does lead to solutions of the partial differential equation. These solutions are products of solutions of two ordinary linear differential equations: a fourth-order radial equation and a second-order angular differential equation. To be expected, without complete separation of the polar variables, there is some restriction on the range of these solutions in comparison with the corresponding separated solutions of the second-order harmonic differential equation in the plane. Notwithstanding these restrictions, the quasi-separation method leads to solutions of the Dirichlet boundary-value problem on a disc with centre at the origin, with boundary conditions determined by the solution and its inward drawn normal taking the value 0 on the edge of the disc. One significant feature for these biharmonic boundary-value problems, in general, follows from the form of the biharmonic differential expression when represented in polar coordinates. In this form, the differential expression has a singularity at the origin, in the radial variable. This singularity translates to a singularity at the origin of the fourth-order radial separated equation; this singularity necessitates the application of a third boundary condition in order to determine a self-adjoint solution to the Dirichlet boundary-value problem. The penultimate section of the paper reports on numerical solutions to the Dirichlet boundary-value problem; these results are also presented graphically. Two specific cases are studied in detail and numerical values of the eigenvalues are compared with the results obtained in earlier studies.
