The electron beam welding technique was used to join Zr41Ti14Cu12Ni10Be23 bulk metallic glass (BMG) to crystalline pure Zr. Compositional, microstructural, and mechanical property variations across the welded interface were evaluated. It is shown that a crystalline layer develops close to the welding interface. Transmission electron microscopy of this layer indicates the crystalline phase to be tetragonal with lattice parameters close to that reported for Zr2Ni. However, the composition of this phase is different as it contains other alloying additions. The interface layer close to the bulk metallic glass side contains nanocrystalline Zr2Cu phase embedded in the glassy matrix. Nanoindentation experiments indicate that the hardness of the crystalline layer, although less than the bulk metallic glass, is more than the Zr itself. Commensurately, tensile tests indicate that the failure of the welded samples occurs at the Zr side rather than at the weld joint.

The absorption and index of refraction of polypyrrole (PPy) and poly-3-methylthiophene (PMeT), from low frequencies up to 4 THz, have been measured by tera-Herz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy. The complex conductance was obtained over this range of frequency. Highly conducting metallic samples follow the Drude model, whereas less conducting ones fit the localization-modified Drude model. The carrier scattering time and mobility in conducting polymers can be directly determined from these measurements.

Liquid phase co-spray forming (LPCSF) was employed to produce two Al-Si-Pb alloys. The preforms thus obtained were then subjected to hot extrusion at different extrusion ratios. Following extrusion, the materials were tensile tested at room temperature. The distribution of Pb particles and the microstructural characterization in as-formed preforms and in the extruded rods were studied on the basis of SEM observation. The influence of the Pb content on the mechanical properties was investigated. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films have been prepared on silicon substrates by sol-gel spin coating technique with spinning speed of 3,000 rpm. The films were annealed at different temperatures from 200 to 500 A degrees C and found that ZnO films exhibit different nanostructures at different annealing temperatures. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that the ZnO films convert from amorphous to polycrystalline phase after annealing at 400 A degrees C. The metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) capacitors were fabricated using ZnO films deposited on pre-cleaned silicon (100) substrates and electrical properties such as current versus voltage (I-V) and capacitance versus voltage (C-V) characteristics were studied. The electrical resistivity decreased with increasing annealing temperature. The oxide capacitance was measured at different annealing temperatures and different signal frequencies. The dielectric constant and the loss factor (tan delta) were increased with increase of annealing temperature.

Cobalt and iron nanoparticles are doped in carbon nanotube (CNT)/polymer matrix composites and studied for strain and magnetic field sensing properties. Characterization of these samples is done for various volume fractions of each constituent (Co and Fe nanoparticles and CNTs) and also for cases when only either of the metallic components is present. The relation between the magnetic field and polarization-induced strain are exploited. The electronic bandgap change in the CNTs is obtained by a simplified tight-binding formulation in terms of strain and magnetic field. A nonlinear constitutive model of glassy polymer is employed to account for (1) electric bias field dependent softening/hardening (2) CNT orientations as a statistical ensemble and (3) CNT volume fraction. An effective medium theory is then employed where the CNTs and nanoparticles are treated as inclusions. The intensity of the applied magnetic field is read indirectly as the change in resistance of the sample. Very small magnetic fields can be detected using this technique since the resistance is highly sensitive to strain. Its sensitivity due to the CNT volume fraction is also discussed. The advantage of this sensor lies in the fact that it can be molded into desirable shape and can be used in fabrication of embedded sensors where the material can detect external magnetic fields on its own. Besides, the stress-controlled hysteresis of the sample can be used in designing memory devices. These composites have potential for use in magnetic encoders, which are made of a magnetic field sensor and a barcode.

The effect of 4.0 MeV proton irradiation on the microstructure and mechanical properties of nanocrystalline (nc) nickel was investigated. The irradiation damage induced in the sample was of the order of 0.004 dpa. Transmission electron microscopy of irradiated samples indicated the presence of dislocation loops within the grains. An increase in hardness and strain-rate sensitivity (m) of nc-Ni with irradiation was noted. The rate-controlling deformation mechanism in irradiated nc-Ni was identified to be interaction of dislocations with irradiation-induced defects. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. The influence of polymer grafting on the phase behavior and elastic properties of two tail lipid bilayers have been investigated using dissipative particle dynamics simulations. For the range of polymer lengths studied, the L(c) to L(alpha) transition temperature is not significantly affected for grafting fractions, G(f) between 0.16 and 0.25. A decrease in the transition temperature is observed at a relatively high grafting fraction, G(f) = 0.36. At low temperatures, a small increase in the area per head group, a(h), at high G(f) leads to an increase in the chain tilt, inducing order in the bilayer and the solvent. The onset of the phase transition occurs with the nucleation of small patches of thinned membrane which grow and form continuous domains as the temperature increases. This region is the co-existence region between the L(beta)(thick) and the L(alpha)(thin) phases. The simulation results for the membrane area expansion as a function of the grafting density conform extremely well to the scalings predicted by self-consistent mean field theories. We find that the bending modulus shows a small decrease for short polymers (number of beads, N(p) = 10) and low G(f), where the influence of polymer is reduced when compared to the effect of the increased a(h). For longer polymers (N(p) > 15), the bending modulus increases monotonically with increase in grafted polymer. Using the results from mean field theory, we partition the contributions to the bending modulus from the membrane and the polymer and show that the dominant contribution to the increased bending modulus arises from the grafted polymer. In this paper, we report a significant improvement in mechanical properties of near eutectic Nb-Si alloys by addition of Gallium (Ga) and control of microstructural length scale. A comparative study of two alloys Nb-18.79 at.%Si and Nb-20.2 at.%Si-2.7 at.%Ga were carried out. The microstructure refinements were carried out by vacuum suction casting in water cooled thick copper mold. It is shown that addition of Ga suppresses Nb(3)Si phase and promotes beta-Nb(5)Si(3) phase. The microstructural length scale and in particular eutectic spacing reduces significantly to 50-100 nm in suction cast ternary alloys. Compression test shows a strength of 2.8 +/- 0.1 GPa and plasticity of 4.3 +/- 0.03%. In comparison, the binary Nb-18.79 at.%Si alloy processed under identical conditions exhibit coarser length scale (300-400 nm) and brittle behavior. The fracture toughness of Ga containing suction cast alloy shows a value of 24.11 +/- 0.5 MPa root m representing a major improvement for bulk Nb-Si eutectic alloy. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. In this present paper, the effects of non-isothermal rolling temperature and reduction in thickness followed by annealing on microstructure and mechanical properties of ZM21 magnesium alloy were investigated. The alloy rolled at four different temperatures 250 degrees C, 300 degrees C, 350 degrees C and 400 degrees C with reductions of 25%, 50% and 75%. Non-isothermal rolling resulted in grain refinement, introduction of shear bands and twins in the matrix alloy. Partial to full recrystallization was observed when the rolling temperature was above recrystallization temperature. Rolling and subsequent annealing resulted in strain-free equiaxed grains and complete disappearance of shear bands and twins. Maximum ultimate strength (345 MPa) with good ductility (14%) observed in the sample rolled at 250 degrees C with 75% reduction in thickness followed by short annealing. Recrystallization during warm/hot rolling was sluggish, but post-roll treatment gives distinct views about dynamic and static recrystallization. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) and silicon dioxide (SiO(2)) thin films and their mixed films were synthesized by the sol-gel spin coating method using titanium tetra isopropoxide (TTIP) and tetra ethyl ortho silicate (TEOS) as the precursor materials for TiO(2) and SiO(2) respectively. The pure and composite films of TiO(2) and SiO(2) were deposited on glass and silicon substrates. The optical properties were studied for different compositions of TiO(2) and SiO(2) sols and the refractive index and optical band gap energies were estimated. MOS capacitors were fabricated using TiO(2) films on p-silicon (1 0 0) substrates. The current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics were studied and the electrical resistivity and dielectric constant were estimated for the films annealed at 200 degrees C for their possible use in optoelectronic applications. Hybrid inorganic-organic framework materials exhibit unique properties that can be advantageously tuned through choice of the inorganic and organic components and by control of the crystal structure. We present a new hydrothermally prepared 3D hybrid framework, [Mn(2-methylsuccinate)](n) (1), comprising alternating 2D manganese oxide sheets and isolated MnO(6) octahedra, pillared via syn, anti-syn carboxylates. Powder magnetic characterization shows that the compound is a homospin Mn(II) ferrimagnet below 2.4 K. The easy-axis is revealed by single-crystal magnetic susceptibility studies and a magnetic structure is proposed. Anisotropic elastic moduli and hardness, observed through nanoindentation on differing crystal facets, were correlated with specific structural features. Such measurements of anisotropy are not commonly undertaken, yet allow for a more comprehensive understanding of structure-property relationships.

The composition, structural, electrical, and optical properties of as-grown and heat treated tin-mono-sulfide (SnS) ultra-thin films have been studied. The ultra-thin SnS films were prepared on glass substrates by thermal resistive evaporation technique. All the SnS films contained nanocrystallites and exhibited p-type conductivity with a low Hall-mobility, <50 cm(2)/Vs. All these films are highly tin rich in nature and exhibited orthorhombic crystal structure. As compared to other films, the SnS films annealed at 300 degrees C showed a low electrical resistivity of similar to 36 Omega cm with an optical band gap of similar to 1.98 eV. The observed electrical and optical properties of all the films are discussed based on their composition and structural parameters. These nanocrystalline ultra-thin SnS films could be expected as a buffer layer for the development of tandem solar cell devices due to their low-resistivity and high absorbability with an optimum band gap. Nanocrystalline materials exhibit very high strengths compared to conventional materials, but their thermal stability may be poor. Electrodeposition is one of the promising methods for obtaining dense nanomaterials. It is shown that use of two different baths and appropriate conditions enables the production of nano-Ni with properties similar to commercially available materials. Microindentation experiments revealed a four fold increase in hardness value for nano-Ni compared to conventional coarse grained Ni. An improved thermal stability of nano-Ni was observed on co-deposition of nano-Al2O3particles.
