The technology of seismic acquirement has been more and more intact in both land area and marine area, however, since the acquirement equipment can not handle the tasks in this both two kinds of prospects at the same time, it is very hard to acquire in the prospect of seashore area, and also the quality of the raw data is poor, the related work in seashore area has been a tough task. With the development of the level of exploration, acquired equipment and technology, a certain series of processing methods has been built up, which enhanced the resolving power, the ratio of signal to noise and the quality of imaging, these methods could meet most of the requirements of exploration and the development. What is more, more and more nowadays prospects are composed by two or more 3D sub-prospect, the differences between frequencies, energy levels and the ratios of signal to noise are definitely obvious, we can not perform finely construct analysis and interpretation of reservoir without solving these problems in matching different raw data. As for the prospect that composed by both seashore and marine ones, through the analysis on the characteristics on frequency, amplitude, polarity and multiples of land prospect and marine prospect, the methods on how to eliminate those differences mentioned above were researched, and this paper gives a series of methods includes the computing of matching factor, recognizing of time difference, recognizing of phase difference, matching frequency, collapsing of abnormal energy, frequency compensating and so on, to fulfill the attenuations of energy difference, frequency difference, time difference and phase difference, and what is more, improve the innovative methods: includes the quantities method to synthetically and automatically recognize time difference and phase difference on the basis of signal match technology and according to statistic rule. And distinct the differences on phase and frequency characteristics of received raw data between velocity seismometer and piezoelectricity seismometer, and deduces that there are 90 degrees gap between data from these two seismometers, thirdly, synthetically apply zone abnormal frequency processing, surface consistent abnormal frequency compensate, residual abnormal frequency compensate, stack time equilibrium and optimize the processing seis-flow, deal with the would-be problems, such as low signal and noise rate, low resolution, poor imaging and poor state of consistent. The theory and approach of the broadband teleseismic body waveform inversion are expatiated in this paper, and the defining the crust structure's methods are developed. Based on the teleseismic P-wave data, the theoretic image of the P-wave radical component is calculated via the convolution of the teleseismic P-wave vertical component and the transform function, and thereby a P-wavefrom inversion method is built. The applied results show the approach effective, stable and its resolution high. The exact and reliable teleseismic P waveforms recorded by CDSN and IRIS and its geodynamics are utilized to obtain China and its vicinage lithospheric transfer functions, this region ithospheric structure is inverted through the inversion of reliable transfer functions, the new knowledge about the deep structure of China and its vicinage is obtained, and the reliable seismological evidence is provided to reveal the geodynamic evolution processes and set up the continental collisional theory. The major studies are as follows: Two important methods to study crustal and upper mantle structure -- body wave travel-time inversion and waveform modeling are reviewed systematically. Based on ray theory, travel-time inversion is characterized by simplicity, crustal and upper mantle velocity model can be obtained by using 1-D travel-time inversion preliminary, which introduces the reference model for studying focal location, focal mechanism, and fine structure of crustal and upper mantle. The large-scale lateral inhomogeneity of crustal and upper mantle can be obtained by three-dimensional t ravel-time seismic tomography. Based on elastic dynamics, through the fitting between theoretical seismogram and observed seismogram, waveform modeling can interpret the detail waveform and further uncover one-dimensional fine structure and lateral variation of crustal and upper mantle, especially the media characteristics of singular zones of ray. Whatever travel-time inversion and waveform modeling is supposed under certain approximate conditions, with respective advantages and disadvantages, and provide convincing structure information for elucidating physical and chemical features and geodynamic processes of crustal and upper mantle. Because the direct wave, surface wave, and refraction wave have lower resolution in investigating seismic velocity transitional zone, which is inadequate to study seismic discontinuities. On the contrary, both the converse and reflected wave, which sample the discontinuities directly, must be carefully picked up from seismogram to constrain the velocity transitional zones. Not only can the converse wave and reflected wave study the crustal structure, but also investigate the upper mantle discontinuities. There are a number of global and regional seismic discontinuities in the crustal and upper mantle, which plays a significant role in understanding physical and chemical properties and geodynamic processes of crustal and upper mantle. The broadband teleseismic P waveform inversion is studied particularly. The teleseismic P waveforms contain a lot of information related to source time function, near-source structure, propagation effect through the mantle, receiver structure, and instrument response, receiver function is isolated form teleseismic P waveform through the vector rotation of horizontal components into ray direction and the deconvolution of vertical component from the radial and tangential components of ground motion, the resulting time series is dominated by local receiver structure effect, and is hardly irrelevant to source and deep mantle effects. Receiver function is horizontal response, which eliminate multiple P wave reflection and retain direct wave and P-S converted waves, and is sensitive to the vertical variation of S wave velocity. Velocity structure beneath a seismic station has different response to radial and vertical component of an accident teleseismic P wave. To avoid the limits caused by a simplified assumption on the vertical response, the receiver function method is mended. In the frequency domain, the transfer function is showed by the ratio of radical response and vertical response of the media to P wave. In the time domain, the radial synthetic waveform can be obtained by the convolution of the transfer function with the vertical wave. In order to overcome the numerical instability, generalized reflection and transmission coefficient matrix method is applied to calculate the synthetic waveform so that all multi-reflection and phase conversion response can be included. A new inversion method, VFSA-LM method, is used in this study, which successfully combines very fast simulated annealing method (VFSA) with damped least square inversion method (LM). Synthetic waveform inversion test confirms its effectiveness and efficiency. Broadband teleseismic P waveform inversion is applied in lithospheric velocity study of China and its vicinage. According to the data of high quality CDSN and IRIS, we obtained an outline map showing the distribution of Asian continental crustal thickness. Based on these results gained, the features of distribution of the crustal thickness and outline of crustal structure under the Asian continent have been analyzed and studied. Finally, this paper advances the principal characteristics of the Asian continental crust. There exist four vast areas of relatively minor variations in the crustal thickness, namely, northern, eastern southern and central areas of Asian crust. As a byproduct, the earthquake location is discussed, Which is a basic issue in seismology. Because of the strong trade-off between the assumed initial time and focal depth and the nonlinear of the inversion problems, this issue is not settled at all. Aimed at the problem, a new earthquake location method named SAMS method is presented, In which, the objective function is the absolute value of the remnants of travel times together with the arrival times and use the Fast Simulated Annealing method is used to inverse. Applied in the Chi-Chi event relocation of Taiwan occurred on Sep 21, 2000, the results show that the SAMS method not only can reduce the effects of the trade-off between the initial time and focal depth, but can get better stability and resolving power. At the end of the paper, the inverse Q filtering method for compensating attenuation and frequency dispersion used in the seismic section of depth domain is discussed. According to the forward and inverse results of synthesized seismic records, our Q filtrating operator of the depth domain is consistent with the seismic laws in the absorbing media, which not only considers the effect of the media absorbing of the waves, but also fits the deformation laws, namely the frequency dispersion of the body wave. Two post stacked profiles about 60KM, a neritic area of China processed, the result shows that after the forward Q filtering of the depth domain, the wide of the wavelet of the middle and deep layers is compressed, the resolution and signal noise ratio are enhanced, and the primary sharp and energy distribution of the profile are retained.

Redundant sensors are needed on a mobile robot so that the accuracy with which it perceives its surroundings can be increased. Sonar and infrared sensors are used here in tandem, each compensating for deficiencies in the other. The robot combines the data from both sensors to build a representation which is more accurate than if either sensor were used alone. Another representation, the curvature primal sketch, is extracted from this perceived workspace and is used as the input to two path planning programs: one based on configuration space and one based on a generalized cone formulation of free space.

We propose and evaluate admission control mechanisms for ACCORD, an Admission Control and Capacity Overload management Real-time Database framework-an architecture and a transaction model-for hard deadline RTDB systems. The system architecture consists of admission control and scheduling components which provide early notification of failure to submitted transactions that are deemed not valuable or incapable of completing on time. In particular, our Concurrency Admission Control Manager (CACM) ensures that transactions which are admitted do not overburden the system by requiring a level of concurrency that is not sustainable. The transaction model consists of two components: a primary task and a compensating task. The execution requirements of the primary task are not known a priori, whereas those of the compensating task are known a priori. Upon the submission of a transaction, the Admission Control Mechanisms are employed to decide whether to admit or reject that transaction. Once admitted, a transaction is guaranteed to finish executing before its deadline. A transaction is considered to have finished executing if exactly one of two things occur: Either its primary task is completed (successful commitment), or its compensating task is completed (safe termination). Committed transactions bring a profit to the system, whereas a terminated transaction brings no profit. The goal of the admission control and scheduling protocols (e.g., concurrency control, I/O scheduling, memory management) employed in the system is to maximize system profit. In that respect, we describe a number of concurrency admission control strategies and contrast (through simulations) their relative performance.

In this paper we present Statistical Rate Monotonic Scheduling (SRMS), a generalization of the classical RMS results of Liu and Layland that allows scheduling periodic tasks with highly variable execution times and statistical QoS requirements. Similar to RMS, SRMS has two components: a feasibility test and a scheduling algorithm. The feasibility test for SRMS ensures that using SRMS' scheduling algorithms, it is possible for a given periodic task set to share a given resource (e.g. a processor, communication medium, switching device, etc.) in such a way that such sharing does not result in the violation of any of the periodic tasks QoS constraints. The SRMS scheduling algorithm incorporates a number of unique features. First, it allows for fixed priority scheduling that keeps the tasks' value (or importance) independent of their periods. Second, it allows for job admission control, which allows the rejection of jobs that are not guaranteed to finish by their deadlines as soon as they are released, thus enabling the system to take necessary compensating actions. Also, admission control allows the preservation of resources since no time is spent on jobs that will miss their deadlines anyway. Third, SRMS integrates reservation-based and best-effort resource scheduling seamlessly. Reservation-based scheduling ensures the delivery of the minimal requested QoS; best-effort scheduling ensures that unused, reserved bandwidth is not wasted, but rather used to improve QoS further. Fourth, SRMS allows a system to deal gracefully with overload conditions by ensuring a fair deterioration in QoS across all tasks---as opposed to penalizing tasks with longer periods, for example. Finally, SRMS has the added advantage that its schedulability test is simple and its scheduling algorithm has a constant overhead in the sense that the complexity of the scheduler is not dependent on the number of the tasks in the system. We have evaluated SRMS against a number of alternative scheduling algorithms suggested in the literature (e.g. RMS and slack stealing), as well as refinements thereof, which we describe in this paper. Consistently throughout our experiments, SRMS provided the best performance. In addition, to evaluate the optimality of SRMS, we have compared it to an inefficient, yet optimal scheduler for task sets with harmonic periods.

This paper shows how a minimal neural network model of the cerebellum may be embedded within a sensory-neuro-muscular control system that mimics known anatomy and physiology. With this embedding, cerebellar learning promotes load compensation while also allowing both coactivation and reciprocal inhibition of sets of antagonist muscles. In particular, we show how synaptic long term depression guided by feedback from muscle stretch receptors can lead to trans-cerebellar gain changes that are load-compensating. It is argued that the same processes help to adaptively discover multi-joint synergies. Simulations of rapid single joint rotations under load illustrates design feasibility and stability.

Molecular tunnel junctions involve studying the behaviour of a single molecule sandwiched between metal leads. When a molecule makes contact with electrodes, it becomes open to the environment which can heavily influence its properties, such as electronegativity and electron transport. While the most common computational approaches remain to be single particle approximations, in this thesis it is shown that a more explicit treatment of electron interactions can be required. By studying an open atomic chain junction, it is found that including electron correlations corrects the strong lead-molecule interaction seen by the ΔSCF approximation, and has an impact on junction I − V properties. The need for an accurate description of electronegativity is highlighted by studying a correlated model of hexatriene-di-thiol with a systematically varied correlation parameter and comparing the results to various electronic structure treatments. The results indicating an overestimation of the band gap and underestimation of charge transfer in the Hartree-Fock regime is equivalent to not treating electron-electron correlations. While in the opposite limit, over-compensating for electron-electron interaction leads to underestimated band gap and too high an electron current as seen in DFT/LDA treatment. It is emphasised in this thesis that correcting electronegativity is equivalent to maximising the overlap of the approximate density matrix to the exact reduced density matrix found at the exact many-body solution. In this work, the complex absorbing potential (CAP) formalism which allows for the inclusion metal electrodes into explicit wavefunction many-body formalisms is further developed. The CAP methodology is applied to study the electron state lifetimes and shifts as the junction is made open.

This work demonstrates an example of the importance of an adequate method to sub-sample model results when comparing with in situ measurements. A test of model skill was performed by employing a point-to-point method to compare a multi-decadal hindcast against a sparse, unevenly distributed historic in situ dataset. The point-to-point method masked out all hindcast cells that did not have a corresponding in situ measurement in order to match each in situ measurement against its most similar cell from the model. The application of the point-to-point method showed that the model was successful at reproducing the inter-annual variability of the in situ datasets. Furthermore, this success was not immediately apparent when the measurements were aggregated to regional averages. Time series, data density and target diagrams were employed to illustrate the impact of switching from the regional average method to the point-to-point method. The comparison based on regional averages gave significantly different and sometimes contradicting results that could lead to erroneous conclusions on the model performance. Furthermore, the point-to-point technique is a more correct method to exploit sparse uneven in situ data while compensating for the variability of its sampling. We therefore recommend that researchers take into account for the limitations of the in situ datasets and process the model to resemble the data as much as possible.

The increase in atmospheric CO2 is a dual threat to the marine environment: from one side it drives climate change, leading to modifications in water temperature, circulation patterns and stratification intensity; on the other side it causes a decrease in marine pH (ocean acidification, or OA) due to the increase in dissolved CO2. Assessing the combined impact of climate change and OA on marine ecosystems is a challenging task. The response of the ecosystem to a single driver can be highly variable and remains still uncertain; additionally the interaction between these can be either synergistic or antagonistic. In this work we use the coupled oceanographic–ecosystem model POLCOMS-ERSEM driven by climate forcing to study the interaction between climate change and OA. We focus in particular on carbonate chemistry, primary and secondary production. The model has been run in three different configurations in order to assess separately the impacts of climate change on net primary production and of OA on the carbonate chemistry, which have been strongly supported by scientific literature, from the impact of biological feedbacks of OA on the ecosystem, whose uncertainty still has to be well constrained. The global mean of the projected decrease of pH at the end of the century is about 0.27 pH units, but the model shows significant interaction among the drivers and high variability in the temporal and spatial response. As a result of this high variability, critical tipping point can be locally and/or temporally reached: e.g. undersaturation with respect to aragonite is projected to occur in the deeper part of the central North Sea during summer. Impacts of climate change and of OA on primary and secondary production may have similar magnitude, compensating in some area and exacerbating in others.

The microscopic mechanism leading to stabilization of cubic and tetragonal forms of zirconia (ZrO2) is analyzed by means of a self-consistent tight-binding model. Using this model, energies and structures of zirconia containing different vacancy concentrations are calculated, equivalent in concentration to the charge compensating vacancies associated with dissolved yttria (Y2O3) in the tetragonal and cubic phase fields (3.2 and 14.4% mol, respectively). The model is shown to predict the large relaxations around an oxygen vacancy, and the clustering of vacancies along the 111 directions, in good agreement with experiments and first principles calculations. The vacancies alone are shown to explain the stabilization of cubic zirconia, and the mechanism is analyzed. (C) 2002 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

We present a practical scheme for performing ab initio supercell calculations of charged slabs at constant electron chemical potential mu, rather than at constant number of electrons N-e. To this end, we define the chemical potential relative to a plane (or "reference electrode") at a finite distance from the slab (the distance should reflect the particular geometry of the situation being modeled). To avoid a net charge in the supercell, and thus make possible a standard supercell calculation, we restore the electroneutrality of the periodically repeated unit by means of a compensating charge, whose contribution to the total energy and potential is subtracted afterwards. The "constant mu" mode enables one to perform supercell calculation on slabs, where the slab is kept at a fixed potential relative to the reference electrode. We expect this to be useful in modeling many experimental situations, especially in electro-chemistry. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To describe the clinical implementation of dynamic multileaf collimation (DMLC). Custom compensated four-field treatments of carcinoma of the bladder have been used as a simple test site for the introduction of intensity modulated radiotherapy.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Compensating intensity modulations are calculated from computed tomography (CT) data, accounting for scattered, as well as primary radiation. Modulations are converted to multileaf collimator (MLC) leaf and jaw settings for dynamic delivery on a linear accelerator. A full dose calculation is carried out, accounting for dynamic leaf and jaw motion and transmission through these components. Before treatment, a test run of the delivery is performed and an absolute dose measurement made in a water or solid water phantom. Treatments are verified by in vivo diode measurements and real-time electronic portal imaging. RESULTS: Seven patients have been treated using DMLC. The technique improves dose homogeneity within the target volume, reducing high dose areas and compensating for loss of scatter at the beam edge. A typical total treatment time is 20 min. CONCLUSIONS: Compensated bladder treatments have proven an effective test site for DMLC in an extremely busy clinic.
