ABSTRACT In the last two decades, the relevance of knowledge acquisition and dissemination processes has been highlighted and consequently, the study of these processes and the implementation of the technologies that make them possible has generated growing interest in the scientific community. In order to ease and optimize knowledge acquisition and dissemination, hierarchical organizations have evolved to a more horizontal configuration with more agile net structures, decreasing the dependence of a centralized authority, and building team-working oriented organizations. At the same time, Web 2.0 collaboration tools such as blogs and wikis have quickly developed. These collaboration tools are characterized by a strong social component and can reach their full potential when they are deployed in horizontal organization structures. Web 2.0, based on user participation, arises as a concept to challenge the existing technologies of the 90’s which were based on websites. Fortune 500 companies – HP, IBM, Xerox, Cisco- adopted the concept immediately even though there was no unanimity about its real usefulness or how it could be measured. This is partly due to the fact that the factors that make the drivers for employees to adopt these tools are not properly understood, consequently leading to implementation failure due to the existence of certain barriers. Given this situation, and faced with theoretical advantages that these Web 2.0 collaboration tools seem to have for companies, managers and the scientific community are showing an increasing interest in answering the following question: Which factors contribute to the decision of the employees of a company to adopt the Web 2.0 tools for collaborative purposes? The answer is complex since these tools are relatively new in business environments. These tools allow us to move from an information Management approach to Knowledge Management. In order to answer this question, the chosen approach involves the application of technology adoption models, all of them based on the individual’s perception of the different aspects related to technology usage. From this perspective, this thesis’ main objective is to study the factors influencing the adoption of blogs and wikis in a company. This is done by using a unified and theoretical predictive model of technological adoption with a holistic approach that is based on literature of technological adoption models and the particularities that these tools presented under study and in a specific context. This theoretical model will allow us to determine the factors that predict the intended use of these tools and their real usage. The scientific research is structured in five parts: Introduction to the research subject, development of the theoretical framework, research work design, empirical analysis and drawing the final conclusions. This thesis develops the five aforementioned parts sequentially thorough seven chapters; part one (chapter one), part two (chapters two and three), part three (chapters four and five), parte four (chapters six) and finally part five (chapter seven). The first chapter is focused on the research problem statement and the objectives of the thesis, intended to be reached during the project. Likewise, the concept of collaboration and its link with the Web 2.0 collaborative tools is discussed as well as an introduction to the technology adoption models. Finally we explain the planning to carry out the research and get the proposed results. After introducing the research topic, the second chapter carries out a review of the evolution of the main existing technology adoption models (IDT, TRA, SCT, TPB, DTPB, C-TAM-TPB, UTAUT, UTAUT2), highlighting its foundations and factors used. Based on technology adoption models set out in chapter 2, the third chapter deals with the factors which have been discussed previously in chapter 2, but adapted to the context of Web 2.0 collaborative tools under study, blogs and wikis. In order to better understand the final model, the factors are grouped into four types: technological factors, control factors, social-normative factors and other specific factors related to the collaborative tools. The first part of chapter 4 covers the analysis of the factors which are more relevant to study the adoption of collaborative tools, and the second part proceeds with the theoretical model which specifies the relationship between the different factors taken into consideration. These relationships will become specific hypotheses that will be tested by the empirical study. Throughout chapter 5 we cover the characteristics of the empirical study used to test the research hypotheses which were set out in chapter 4. The nature of research is social, exploratory, and it is based on a quantitative empirical study whose analysis is carried out using multivariate analysis techniques. The second part of this chapter includes the description of the scales of the measuring instrument; the methodology for data gathering, the detailed analysis of the sample, and finally the existence of bias attributable to the measurement method, the "Bias Common Method" is checked. The first part of chapter 6 corresponds to the analysis of results. The statistical technique employed (PLS-SEM) is previously explained as a tool of multivariate analysis, capable of carrying out predictive analysis, and as the appropriate methodology used to validate the model in a two-stages analysis, the measurement model and the structural model. Futhermore, it is necessary to check the requirements to be met by the sample and the thresholds of the parameters taken into account. In the second part of chapter 6 an empirical analysis of the data is performed for the two samples, one for blogs and the other for wikis, in order to validate the research hypothesis proposed in chapter 4. Finally, in chapter 7 the fulfillment level of the objectives raised in chapter 1 is reviewed and the theoretical, methodological and practical conclusions derived from the results of the study are presented. Next, we cover the general conclusions, detailing for each group of factors including practical recommendations that can be drawn to guide implementation of these tools in real situations in companies. As a final part of the chapter the limitations of the study are included and a number of potential future researches suggested, along with research partial results which have been obtained thorough the research.

ABSTRACT Context: The adoption and tailoring of agile methods has been studied in the community and various approaches have been proposed as a solution. Most organizations start introducing agile practices gradually, which ones, together with existing good practices, make a new agile method tailored. When an organization starts to adapt an agile method, the context-specific needs of each project are the main trouble, because even though the agile method tailored has been defined based on best practices and processes in the organization, the specific conditions of the project and its team, require specific adaptations. Another important aspect to be solved is to implement this adoption and adaptation throughout all the organization. Agile methods do not include specific activities for helping organizations to solve this problem, because their effort is focused on the team and the project. Objective: The main objective of this research is to “define a tailoring framework for agile methods oriented to contexts that allows its deployment throughout all the organization using improvement cycles based on the reuse of lessons learned”. This framework will allow organize, manage and validate the tailoring of agile methods, adding small improvements in the process, and facilitating reuse. All this, with the support of senior management. Method: This work began with an exploratory investigation accompanied by a systematic review to determine the state of the art about the object of study, after major gaps and needs resolution were identified, and the scope of the problem was delimited. Subsequently, the research hypotheses were defined and the framework was developed for solving the research problem. The results were evaluated and validated through a case study. Finally, conclusions were drawn and future research were established. Resolution The framework presents an alternative for tailoring agile methodologies and facilitates its implementation throughout all the organization. The framework identifies the contexts or scenarios in which software development projects are developed and analyses the causes of the problems affecting the achievement of business goals in each context. Then the adaptation actions required to reduce or eliminate these causes are defined and incorporated into the definition of agile method. Thus, a method tailored for each context is created. When a new project is started, the context in which it will be developed is identified and the tailored agile method to that context is applied. At the end of each iteration of the project, the measurements obtained are analysed and compared with the historical average of context to analyse the improvement in business goals. Based on this comparison, and the experience gained by the project team, adjustments are made in adaptation actions to try to achieve an improvement in the next iteration. Once the project is completed, the impact of the achieved results are known and it can determine if it has reached an improvement in the context of the project. If so, the tailored agile method is stored in a repository of experiences to be reused by other development teams in the organization. Results The goal of this research was successfully evaluated and validated through experimentation in a case study, so the research hypotheses were approved. The contributions and main results of this research are: A framework for tailoring agile methods, that allows its deployment throughout all the organization. A procedure for identifying adaptation scenarios or contexts. A procedure for defining adaptation units from inhibitors of the business goals of the organization. A technique for analysing the achievement of goals in process improvement proposals. Conclusions: There are three main advantages that have been highlighted during the research: The framework provides a mechanism to optimize the performance of agile methods because it guides the process based on the specific needs of the project context. The framework preserves the empirical knowledge acquired by the development team because it registers this empirical knowledge as experience for the organization. The framework streamlines and shortens the process of deploying the tailored agile method to other teams in your organization.

ABSTRACT The application of pervasive computing is extending from field-specific to everyday use. The Internet of Things (IoT) is the shiniest example of its application and of its intrinsic complexity compared with classical application development. The main characteristic that differentiates pervasive from other forms of computing lies in the use of contextual information. Some classical applications do not use any contextual information whatsoever. Others, on the other hand, use only part of the contextual information, which is integrated in an ad hoc fashion using an application-specific implementation. This information is handled in a one-off manner because of the difficulty of sharing context across applications. As a matter of fact, the application type determines what the contextual information is. For instance, for an imaging editor, the image is the information and its meta-data, like the time of the shot or camera settings, are the context, whereas, for a file-system application, the image, including its camera settings, is the information and the meta-data external to the file, like the modification date or the last accessed timestamps, constitute the context. This means that contextual information is hard to share. A communication middleware that supports context decidedly eases application development in pervasive computing. However, the use of context should not be mandatory; otherwise, the communication middleware would be reduced to a context middleware and no longer be compatible with non-context-aware applications. SilboPS, our implementation of content-based publish/subscribe inspired by SIENA [11, 9], solves this problem by adding two new elements to the paradigm: the context and the context function. Context represents the actual contextual information specific to the message to be sent or that needs to be notified to the subscriber, whereas the context function is evaluated using the publisher’s context and the subscriber’s context to decide whether the current message and context are useful for the subscriber. In this manner, context logic management is decoupled from context management, increasing the flexibility of communication and usage across different applications. Since the default context is empty, context-aware and classical applications can use the same SilboPS, resolving the syntactic mismatch that there is between the two categories. In any case, the possible semantic mismatch is still present because it depends on how each application interprets the data, and it cannot be resolved by an agnostic third party. The IoT environment introduces not only context but scaling challenges too. The number of sensors, the volume of the data that they produce and the number of applications that could be interested in harvesting such data are growing all the time. Today’s response to the above need is cloud computing. However, cloud computing applications need to be able to scale elastically [22]. Unfortunately there is no slicing, as distributed system primitives that support internal state partitioning [33] and hot swapping and current cloud systems like OpenStack or OpenNebula do not provide elastic monitoring out of the box. This means there is a two-sided problem: 1) how to scale an application elastically and 2) how to monitor the application and know when it should scale in or out. E-SilboPS is the elastic version of SilboPS. I t is the solution for the monitoring problem thanks to its content-based publish/subscribe nature and, unlike other solutions [5], it scales efficiently so as to meet workload demand without overprovisioning or underprovisioning. Additionally, it is based on a newly designed algorithm that shows how to add elasticity in an application with different state constraints: stateless, isolated stateful with external coordination and shared stateful with general coordination. Its evaluation shows that it is able to achieve remarkable speedups where the network layer is the main limiting factor: the calculated efficiency (see Figure 5.8) shows how each configuration performs with respect to adjacent configurations. This provides insight into the actual trending of the whole system in order to predict if the next configuration would offset its cost against the resulting gain in notification throughput. Particular attention has been paid to the evaluation of same-cost deployments in order to find out which one is the best for the given workload demand. Finally, the overhead introduced by the different configurations has been estimated to identify the primary limiting factor for throughput. This helps to determine the intrinsic sequential part and base overhead [26] of an optimal versus a suboptimal deployment. Depending on the type of workload, this can be as low as 10% in a local optimum or as high as 60% when an overprovisioned configuration is deployed for a given workload demand. This Karp-Flatt metric estimation is important for system management because it indicates the direction (scale in or out) in which the deployment has to be changed in order to improve its performance instead of simply using a scale-out policy.

To increase our understanding of the formation of students' intentions to found an own firm, research needs to systematically integrate theory of planned behavior, resource-based view, and family business literature. To date, however, an explicit and systematic integration of these perspectives cannot be found. We attempt to close this gap by explicitly investigating founding intentions of students with family business background. More specifically, we examine how the provision of human, social, and financial resources by the family affects students' desirability and feasibility perceptions, and ultimately founding intentions. Our analysis based on a sample of 14'290 students from 26 countries reveals that both desirability and feasibility perceptions mediate the relationships between all three types of resources and founding intentions. Interestingly, the provision of financial resources is negatively related to both desirability and feasibility perceptions. These findings illustrate the research potential of a combination of theory of planned behavior with the resource-based view, especially in the family business context. Our study thus offers valuable contributions to literature on career choices, theory of planned behavior, and family business, as well as to practice.

The research agenda for the field of international human resource management (IHRM) is clear. For a better understanding and to benefit substantially, management scholars must study IHRM in context (Jackson, S.E. and Schuler, R.S. 1995. Understanding human resource management in the context of organizations and their environment. Annual Review of Psychology, 46: 237–264; Geringer, J.M., Frayne, C.A. and Milliman, J.F. 2002. In search of 'best practices' in international human resource management: research design and methodology. Human Resource Management, forthcoming). IHRM should be studied within the context of changing economic and business conditions. The dynamics of both the local/regional and international/global business context in which the firm operates should be given serious consideration. Further, it could be beneficial to study IHRM within the context of the industry and the firm's strategy and its other functional areas and operations. In taking these perspectives, one needs to use multiple levels of analysis when studying IHRM: the external social, political, cultural and economic environment; the industry, the firm, the sub-unit, the group, and the individual. Research in contextual isolation is misleading: it fails to advance understanding in any significant way (Adler, N.J. and Ghadar, E. 1990. Strategic human resource management: a global perspective. Human Resource Management in International Comparison. Berlin: de Gruyter; Locke, R. and Thelen, K. 1995. Apples and oranges revisited: contextualized comparisons and the study of comparative labor politics. Politics & Society, 23, 337–367). In this paper, we attempt to review the existing state of academic work in IHRM and illustrate how it incorporates the content and how it might be expanded to do so.

This study tests the implications of tournament theory using data on 100 U.K. stock market companies, covering over 500 individual executives, in the late 1990s. Our results provide some evidence consistent with the operation of tournament mechanisms within the U.K. business context. Firstly, we find a convex relationship between executive pay and organizational level and secondly, that the gap between CEO pay and other board executives (i.e., tournament prize) is positively related to the number of participants in the tournament. However, we also show that the variation in executive team pay has little role in determining company performance.

The use of spreadsheets has become routine in all aspects of business with usage growing across a range of functional areas and a continuing trend towards end user spreadsheet development. However, several studies have raised concerns about the accuracy of spreadsheet models in general, and of end user developed applications in particular, raising the risk element for users. High error rates have been discovered, even though the users/developers were confident that their spreadsheets were correct. The lack of an easy to use, context-sensitive validation methodology has been highlighted as a significant contributor to the problems of accuracy. This paper describes experiences in using a practical, contingency factor-based methodology for validation of spreadsheet-based DSS. Because the end user is often both the system developer and a stakeholder, the contingency factor-based validation methodology may need to be used in more than one way. The methodology can also be extended to encompass other DSS.

Since its introduction by management consultants in the early 1980s, supply chain management (SCM) has been primarily concerned with the integration of processes and activities both within and between organisations. The concept of supply chain integration (SCI) is based on documented evidence that suggests that much of the waste throughout businesses is a consequence of fragmented supply chain configurations. However, there is also evidence to suggest that the achievement of higher levels of intra- and inter-firm integration presents an array of managerial challenges. The need for innovation in all aspects of SCM is widely recognised. Given the pivotal role of the integration paradigm within SCM, any meaningful innovation in this area must focus heavily on this issue. This chapter outlines some of the challenges by exploring the evolving SCM business context. It goes on to relate SCM theory to the widely cited Porter value chain concept. The core of the chapter provides a detailed description of SCI based on a wide variety of literature. It does so with particular reference to the challenges inherent in implementing an integrated business paradigm with a view to identifying a range of possible innovative solutions. The adoption of more integrated supply chain structures raises questions regarding the nature of both internal and external customer/supplier relationships. The effective management of such relationships is, therefore, given particular focus.

METPEX is a 3 year, FP7 project which aims to develop a PanEuropean tool to measure the quality of the passenger's experience of multimodal transport. Initial work has led to the development of a comprehensive set of variables relating to different passenger groups, forms of transport and journey stages. This paper addresses the main challenges in transforming the variables into usable, accessible computer based tools allowing for the real time collection of information, across multiple journey stages in different EU countries. Non-computer based measurement instruments will be used to gather information from those who may not have or be familiar with mobile technology. Smartphone-based measurement instruments will also be used, hosted in two applications. The mobile applications need to be easy to use, configurable and adaptable according to the context of use. They should also be inherently interesting and rewarding for the participant, whilst allowing for the collection of high quality, valid and reliable data from all journey types and stages (from planning, through to entry into and egress from different transport modes, travel on public and personal vehicles and support of active forms of transport (e.g. cycling and walking). During all phases of the data collection and processing, the privacy of the participant is highly regarded and is ensured. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Business tourism is one of tourist segments with different market characteristics in relation to others segmentations, such as low seasonality, there is no requirement of natural attractions, it serves as destination projection and it generates profitable larger numbers. Due to the context around business travels, the hotel so many times has a fundamental whole among the elements of the production chain in this segmentation. Business tourism in Teresina is the primary segmentation of the capital, since it represents almost 70% of hotel demand; hence this research has as objective to evaluate through the perceptions of business travelers, the level of quality services of hotels of Teresina. The research is exploratory and descriptive, of functionalist character. This study is characterized by qualitative and quantitative research, supported by a basis of methodological pluralism. For primary data collection was performed applying a suitable research instrument of SERVPERF model (Service Performance). The universe of this study were Teresina's accommodations, restricted to only those that fit in hotel category and it was inside metropolitan area of Teresina. The study subjects were business travelers who were hosted in these hotels. For the analysis, it was considered certain factors: descriptive analysis, factor analysis, correlation matrix analysis of the variables; It was still compiling a graphic of lexicons obtained in the survey about respondent's the notion of quality of vision in the hotel service; Finally, qualitative analysis was based on the theories of marketing, targeting and quality of tourism services applied. The results show that the Teresina hotel service is on a regular average, especially for Reliability and Safety dimensions were highlighted. Whereas, the factor analysis showed the emergence of two factors to explain "Empathy" dimension, one of this is about the organization and the other one is about consumer. And by Lexicometria was possible to observe the importance to the customer of other variables such as: personal aspects, price and location for this tour segmentation.
