INTRODUCTION Every joint registry aims to improve patient care by identifying implants that have an inferior performance. For this reason, each registry records the implant name that has been used in the individual patient. In most registries, a paper-based approach has been utilized for this purpose. However, in addition to being time-consuming, this approach does not account for the fact that failure patterns are not necessarily implant specific but can be associated with design features that are used in a number of implants. Therefore, we aimed to develop and evaluate an implant product library that allows both time saving barcode scanning on site in the hospital for the registration of the implant components and a detailed description of implant specifications. MATERIALS AND METHODS A task force consisting of representatives of the German Arthroplasty Registry, industry, and computer specialists agreed on a solution that allows barcode scanning of implant components and that also uses a detailed standardized classification describing arthroplasty components. The manufacturers classified all their components that are sold in Germany according to this classification. The implant database was analyzed regarding the completeness of components by algorithms and real-time data. RESULTS The implant library could be set up successfully. At this point, the implant database includes more than 38,000 items, of which all were classified by the manufacturers according to the predefined scheme. Using patient data from the German Arthroplasty Registry, several errors in the database were detected, all of which were corrected by the respective implant manufacturers. CONCLUSIONS The implant library that was developed for the German Arthroplasty Registry allows not only on-site barcode scanning for the registration of the implant components but also its classification tree allows a sophisticated analysis regarding implant characteristics, regardless of brand or manufacturer. The database is maintained by the implant manufacturers, thereby allowing registries to focus their resources on other areas of research. The database might represent a possible global model, which might encourage harmonization between joint replacement registries enabling comparisons between joint replacement registries.

Introduction Many marine planktonic crustaceans such as copepods have been considered as widespread organisms. However, the growing evidence for cryptic and pseudo-cryptic speciation has emphasized the need of re-evaluating the status of copepod species complexes in molecular and morphological studies to get a clearer picture about pelagic marine species as evolutionary units and their distributions. This study analyses the molecular diversity of the ecologically important Paracalanus parvus species complex. Its seven currently recognized species are abundant and also often dominant in marine coastal regions worldwide from temperate to tropical oceans. Results COI and Cytochrome b sequences of 160 specimens of the Paracalanus parvus complex from all oceans were obtained. Furthermore, 42 COI sequences from GenBank were added for the genetic analyses. Thirteen distinct molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTU) and two single sequences were revealed with cladistic analyses (Maximum Likelihood, Bayesian Inference), of which seven were identical with results from species delimitation methods (barcode gaps, ABDG, GMYC, Rosenberg's P(AB)). In total, 10 to 12 putative species were detected and could be placed in three categories: (1) temperate geographically isolated, (2) warm-temperate to tropical wider spread and (3) circumglobal warm-water species. Conclusions The present study provides evidence of cryptic or pseudocryptic speciation in the Paracalanus parvus complex. One major insight is that the species Paracalanus parvus s.s. is not panmictic, but may be restricted in its distribution to the northeastern Atlantic.

The Tara Oceans Expedition (2009-2013) sampled the world oceans on board a 36 m long schooner, collecting environmental data and organisms from viruses to planktonic metazoans for later analyses using modern sequencing and state-of-the-art imaging technologies. Tara Oceans Data are particularly suited to study the genetic, morphological and functional diversity of plankton. Data sets in this collection provide methodological and environmental context to all samples collected during the Tara Oceans Expedition (2009-2013).

Resumen Ejecutivo Desde hace unos años, la tecnología RFID parece estar tecnológicamente madura, aunque se halla inmersa en una continua evolución y mejora de sus prestaciones frente a la tecnología basada en el código de barras. Esta tecnología está empezando a aumentar su comercialización y uso generalizado. Este proyecto describe su funcionamiento y arquitectura, las aplicaciones e implementaciones reales en diversos sectores empresariales y soluciones o propuestas para mejorar y fomentar investigaciones, desarrollos e implementaciones futuras. Una primera parte consiste en el desarrollo teórico del funcionamiento, parámetros físicos y la arquitectura RFID. En la segunda parte se estudian las aplicaciones potenciales, beneficios e inconvenientes y varios puntos de vista; empresas que invierten a favor de RFID y han realizado implementaciones reales exitosas y organizaciones en contra. La tercera y última parte analiza las consecuencias negativas que supone un mal uso de la tecnología como la pérdida de privacidad o confidencialidad, se proponen algunas medidas de seguridad y soluciones al problema utilizando la regularización y estandarización. Finalmente, tras estudiar la tecnología RFID, se aportan algunas conclusiones de carácter actual y de futuro después de observar resultados de expectativas previstas. Executive Summary For several years, RFID technology seems to be technologically mature, but is immersed in a continuous evolution and improvement of their performance than the technology based on the barcode. This technology is starting to increase their marketing and widespread use. This project describes its operation and architecture, applications and real implementations in different business sectors and solutions or proposals to improve and enhance research, development and future implementations. The first part consists of theory development of the operation, physical parameters and architecture RFID. The second part focuses on the potential applications, benefits and drawbacks and several points of view; companies investing on behalf of RFID and have made successful actual deployments and organizations against. The third and last part discusses the negative impact that is a bad use of technology such as loss of privacy or confidentiality; suggest some security measures and solutions to the problem using regularization and standardization. Finally, it provides some conclusions of the current character, after studying RFID technology and the future after observing results of expectations.

Il processo di Data Entry manuale non solo è oneroso dal punto di vista temporale ed economico, lo è ancor di più poiché rappresenta una fonte di errore: per questi motivi, l’acquisizione automatizzata delle informazioni lungo la catena produttiva è un obiettivo fortemente desiderato dal Gruppo per migliorare i propri business. Le tecnologie analizzate, ormai diffuse e standardizzate in ampia scala come barcode, etichette logistiche, terminali in radiofrequenza, possono apportare grandi benefici ai processi aziendali, ancor più integrandole su misura agli ERP aziendali, permettendo una registrazione rapida e corretta delle informazioni e la diffusione immediata delle stesse all’intera organizzazione. L’analisi dei processi e dei flussi hanno evidenziato le criticità e permesso di capire dove e quando intervenire con una progettazione che risultasse quanto più la best suite possibile. Il lancio dei fabbisogni, l’entrata, la mappatura e la movimentazione merci in Magazzino, lo stato di produzione, lo scarico componenti ed il carico di produzione in Confezionamento e Semilavorazione, l’istituzione di un magazzino di interscambio Dogana, un flusso di tracciabilità preciso e rapido, sono tutti eventi che modificheranno i processi aziendali, snellendoli e svincolando risorse che potranno essere reinvestite in operatività a valore aggiunto superiore. I risultati potenzialmente ottenibili, comprovati anche dalle esperienze esterne di fornitori e consulenza, hanno generato le condizioni necessarie ad un rapido studio e start dei lavori: il Gruppo è entusiasta ed impaziente di portare a termine quanto prima il progetto e di andare a regime con la nuova modalità operativa, snellita ed ottimizzata.

The present data set provides an Excel file in a zip archive. The file lists 334 samples of size fractionated eukaryotic plankton community with a suite of associated metadata (Database W1). Note that if most samples represented the piconano- (0.8-5 µm, 73 samples), nano- (5-20 µm, 74 samples), micro- (20-180 µm, 70 samples), and meso- (180-2000 µm, 76 samples) planktonic size fractions, some represented different organismal size-fractions: 0.2-3 µm (1 sample), 0.8-20 µm (6 samples), 0.8 µm - infinity (33 samples), and 3-20 µm (1 sample). The table contains the following fields: a unique sample sequence identifier; the sampling station identifier; the Tara Oceans sample identifier (TARA_xxxxxxxxxx); an INDSC accession number allowing to retrieve raw sequence data for the major nucleotide databases (short read archives at EBI, NCBI or DDBJ); the depth of sampling (Subsurface - SUR or Deep Chlorophyll Maximum - DCM); the targeted size range; the sequences template (either DNA or WGA/DNA if DNA extracted from the filters was Whole Genome Amplified); the latitude of the sampling event (decimal degrees); the longitude of the sampling event (decimal degrees); the time and date of the sampling event; the device used to collect the sample; the logsheet event corresponding to the sampling event ; the volume of water sampled (liters). Microstructure manipulation is a fundamental process to the study of biology and medicine, as well as to advance micro- and nano-system applications. Manipulation of microstructures has been achieved through various microgripper devices developed recently, which lead to advances in micromachine assembly, and single cell manipulation, among others. Only two kinds of integrated feedback have been demonstrated so far, force sensing and optical binary feedback. As a result, the physical, mechanical, optical, and chemical information about the microstructure under study must be extracted from macroscopic instrumentation, such as confocal fluorescence microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. In this research work, novel Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical-System (MOEMS) microgrippers are presented. These devices utilize flexible optical waveguides as gripping arms, which provide the physical means for grasping a microobject, while simultaneously enabling light to be delivered and collected. This unique capability allows extensive optical characterization of the structure being held such as transmission, reflection, or fluorescence. The microgrippers require external actuation which was accomplished by two methods: initially with a micrometer screw, and later with a piezoelectric actuator. Thanks to a novel actuation mechanism, the "fishbone", the gripping facets remain parallel within 1 degree. The design, simulation, fabrication, and characterization are systematically presented. The devices mechanical operation was verified by means of 3D finite element analysis simulations. Also, the optical performance and losses were simulated by the 3D-to-2D effective index (finite difference time domain FDTD) method as well as 3D Beam Propagation Method (3D-BPM). The microgrippers were designed to manipulate structures from submicron dimensions up to approximately 100 μm. The devices were implemented in SU-8 due to its suitable optical and mechanical properties. This work demonstrates two practical applications: the manipulation of single SKOV-3 human ovarian carcinoma cells, and the detection and identification of microparts tagged with a fluorescent "barcode" implemented with quantum dots. The novel devices presented open up new possibilities in the field of micromanipulation at the microscale, scalable to the nano-domain.

Skates and rays constitute the most speciose group of chondrichthyan fishes, yet are characterised by remarkable levels of morphological and ecological conservatism. They can be challenging to identify, which makes monitoring species compositions for fisheries management purposes problematic. Owing to their slow growth and low fecundity, skates are vulnerable to exploitation and species exhibiting endemism or limited ranges are considered to be the most at risk. The Madeira skate Raja maderensis is endemic and classified as ‘Data Deficient’ by the IUCN, yet its taxonomic distinctiveness from the morphologically similar and more wide-ranging thornback ray Raja clavata is unresolved. This study evaluated the sequence divergence of both the variable control region and cytochrome oxidase I ‘DNA barcode’ gene of the mitochondrial genome to elucidate the genetic differentiation of specimens identified as R. maderensis and R. clavata collected across much of their geographic ranges. Genetic evidence was insufficient to support the different species designations. However regardless of putative species identification, individuals occupying waters around the Azores and North African Seamounts represent an evolutionarily significant unit worthy of special consideration for conservation management.
