Ce4+ extraction rate from aqueous sulphate solutions by Cyanex923 in heptane was studied using a constant interfacial cell with laminar flow at 30 degreesC. The experimental hydrodynamic conditions were chosen and the contribution of diffusion to the measured rate of reaction was minimized. Cerium extraction rate was measured at different chemical composition by varying the concentrations of hydrogen ion, sulphate and Cyanex923. A cerium-Cyanex923(B) extractive is formed at the interface. The data were analyszed in terms of pseudo-first order constants and a reaction mechanism was developed.

The ion exchange mechanism accompanying the oxidation/reduction processes of cupric hexacyanoferrate-modified platinum electrodes in different aqueous electrolyte solutions has been studied by means of in situ probe beam deflection and the electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance technique. The results demonstrate that the charge neutrality of the film during the reoxidation/reduction process is accomplished predominantly by the movement of cations, but anions and/or solvent are also participator(s). Moreover, in KHC8H4O4 (potassium biphthalate) solution, the EQCM data obtained from chronoamperometry experiment are more complicated than those in KCl and K2SO4 solutions. A set of AM-AA copolymer samples with the same comonomer content and different average molecular weight have been characterized by C-13 NMB and light scattering methods in this paper. The chemical composition (comonomer AA, mole content 16.9 +/- 1.1%) of these samples is uniform. the sequence of AA in the macromolecular chain is of alone and random distribution and the light scattering theory from polyelectrolyte in added-salt solutions is suitable for the AM-AA copolymers-0.12 mol/L NaCl water systems. The actual values of M(w), the second Virial coefficient A(2) and the mean square radius of gyration (R(2)), for the studied samples have been obtained. The relationships between the molecular parameters are as follows: A(2)=0.0619 ($) over bar M(w)(-0.24), < R(2) >(1/2)(t)= 0.0210 ($) over bar M(w)(0.54).

A method for the specific determination of cobalt based on reversed-phase liquid chromatography with amperometric detection via on-column complex formation has been developed. A water-soluble chelating agent, 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol-6-sulphonic acid (PAN-6S), is added to the mobile phase and aqueous cobalt solutions are injected directly into the column to form in situ the cobalt-PAN-6S chelate, which is then separated from other metal PAN-6S chelates and subjected to reductive amperometric detection at a moderate potential of -0.3 V. Because the procedure eliminates the interference of oxygen and depresses the electrochemical reduction of the mobile phase-containing ligand PAN-6S, by virtue of the quasi:reversible electrode process of the cobalt-PAN-6S complex, a low detection limit of 0.06 ng can be readily obtained. Interference effects were examined for sixteen common metal species, and at a 5- to 8000-fold excess by mass no obvious interference was observed. The feasibility of the method as an approach to the specific analysis of cobalt in a hair sample has been demonstrated.

It was the objective of this study to compare the suitability of different extractants for predicting the availability of sulfur (S) in natural grassland in a sulfur response trial on three different soil types in the Inner Mongolia steppe of China. For soil analysis, seven different extractants have been employed. The inorganic SO4-S concentration was determined by ion chromatography. Additionally, in the Ca(H-2-PO4)(2) extract the total soluble S was determined employing turbidimetry. Weak salt solutions (0.15% CaCl2, Ca(H2PO4)(2), and KH2PO4) extracted similar amounts Of SO4-S. Extraction with 0.025 M KCl provided the lowest SO4-S values. Deionized water dissolved significantly more SO4-S in the control plots than most weak salt extractants. The concentration of soluble organic S decreased in the control plots after 100 days of plant growth, indicating that the organic S pool contributed significantly to the S nutrition of the forage crops. Significant relationships among the SO4-S in the soil determined in different extracts and crop yield, sulfur content in the forage, and total sulfur uptake were only found for the Ca(H2PO4)(2) extract. In general, the correlation coefficients proved to be unsatisfactory for field experimentation.

In the present work, Nafion (R) membrane porosity changes were determined in aqueous ethanol solutions with different concentrations by weighing vacuum-dried and ethanol aqueous solution equilibrated membranes at room temperature. The ethanol crossover rate through Nafion (R)-115 membrane at different temperatures and different concentrations had been investigated in a fuel cell test apparatus by using membrane gets higher as ethanol solution gas chromatography analysis. The experimental results show that the swelling degree of Nafion (R) concentration increases. The ethanol crossover rate increases with ethanol concentration and temperature increment. The single direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) tests were carried out to investigate the effect of ethanol concentration on ethanol crossover and consequently, on the open circuit voltage and the cell performance of DEFC. It can be found that ethanol crossover presented a negative effect on the OCV and the cell performance of DEFC. It can also be found that an improved DEFC performance was obtained as temperature increased although the ethanol crossover rate increased with temperature increment. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Flavour release from food is determined by the binding of flavours to other food ingredients and the partition of flavour molecules among different phases. Food emulsions are used as delivery systems for food flavours, and tailored structuring in emulsions provides novel means to better control flavour release. The current study investigated four structured oil-in-water emulsions with structuring in the oil phase, oil-water interface, and water phase. Oil phase structuring was achieved by the formation of monoglyceride (MG) liquid crystals in the oil droplets (MG structured emulsions). Structured interface was created by the adsorption of a whey protein isolate (WPI)-pectin double layer at the interface (multilayer emulsion). Water phase structured emulsions referred to emulsion filled protein gels (EFP gels), where emulsion droplets were embedded in WPI gel network, and emulsions with maltodextrins (MDs) of different dextrose-equivalent (DE) values. Flavour compounds with different physicochemical properties were added into the emulsions, and flavour release (release rate, headspace concentration and air-emulsion partition coefficient) was described by GC headspace analysis. Emulsion structures, including crystalline structure, particle size, emulsion stability, rheology, texture, and microstructures, were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction, light scattering, multisample analytical centrifuge, rheometry, texture analysis, and confocal laser scanning microscopy, respectively. In MG structured emulsions, MG self-assembled into liquid crystalline structures and stable β-form crystals were formed after 3 days of storage at 25 °C. The inclusion of MG crystals allowed tween 20 stabilized emulsions to present viscoelastic properties, and it made WPI stabilized emulsions more sensitive to the change of pH and NaCl concentrations. Flavour compounds in MG structured emulsions had lower initial headspace concentration and air-emulsion partition coefficients than those in unstructured emulsions. Flavour release can be modulated by changing MG content, oil content and oil type. WPI-pectin multilayer emulsions were stable at pH 5.0, 4.0, and 3.0, but they presented extensive creaming when subjected to salt solutions with NaCl ≥ 150 mM and mixed with artificial salivas. Increase of pH from 5.0 to 7.0 resulted in higher headspace concentration but unchanged release rate, and increase of NaCl concentration led to increased headspace concentration and release rate. The study also showed that salivas could trigger higher release of hydrophobic flavours and lower release of hydrophilic flavours. In EFP gels, increases in protein content and oil content contributed to gels with higher storage modulus and force at breaking. Flavour compounds had significantly reduced release rates and air-emulsion partition coefficients in the gels than the corresponding ungelled emulsions, and the reduction was in line with the increase of protein content. Gels with stronger gel network but lower oil content were prepared, and lower or unaffected release rates of the flavours were observed. In emulsions containing maltodextrins, water was frozen at a much lower temperature, and emulsion stability was greatly improved when subjected to freeze-thawing. Among different MDs, MD DE 6 offered the emulsion the highest stability. Flavours had lower air-emulsion partition coefficients in the emulsions with MDs than those in the emulsion without MD. Moreover, the involvement of MDs in the emulsions allowed most flavours had similar release profiles before and after freeze-thaw treatment. The present study provided information about different structured emulsions as delivery systems for flavour compounds, and on how food structure can be designed to modulate flavour release, which could be helpful in the development of functional foods with improved flavour profile.

NH4[Hg-3(NH)(2)](NO3)(3) (1) and [Hg2N](NO3) (2) are obtained from cone. aqueous ammonia solutions of Hg(NO3)(2) at ambient temperature and under hydrothermal conditions at 180 degreesC, respectively, as colourless and dark yellow to light brown single crystals. The crystal structures {NH4[Hg-3(NH)(2)](NO3)(3): cubic, P4(I)32, a = 1030.4(2) pm, Z = 4, R-all = 0.028; [Hg2N](NO3): tetragonal, P4(3)2(1)2, a = 1540.4(1), c = 909.8(1) pm, Z = 4, R-all = 0.054} have been determined from single crystal data. Both exhibit network type structures in which [HNHg3] and [NHg4] tetrahedra of the partial structures of 1 and 2 are connected via three and four vertices, respectively. 1 transforms at about 270 degreesC in a straightforward reaction to 2 whereby the decomposition products of NH4NO3 are set free. 2 decomposes at about 380 degreesC forming yellow HgO. Undoped and cobalt-doped (1-4 wt.%) ZnO polycrystalline, thin films have been fabricated on quartz substrates using sequential spin-casting and annealing of simple salt solutions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveals a wurzite ZnO crystalline structure with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy showing lattice planes of separation 0.26 nm, characteristic of (002) planes. The Co appears to be tetrahedrally co-ordinated in the lattice on the Zn sites (XRD) and has a charge of + 2 in a high-spin electronic state (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy). Co-doping does not alter the wurzite structure and there is no evidence of the precipitation of cobalt oxide phases within the limits of detection of Raman and XRD analysis. Lattice defects and chemisorbed oxygen are probed using photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy - crucially, however, this transparent semiconductor material retains a bandgap in the ultraviolet (3.30-3.48 eV) and high transparency (throughout the visible spectral regime) across the doping range. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Large, thin (50 mu m) dry polymer sheets containing numerous surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) active Ag nanopartide aggregates have been prepared by drying aqueous mixtures of hydroxyethylcelloulose (HEC) and preaggregated Ag colloid in 10 x 10 cm molds. In these dry films, the particle aggregates are protected from the environment during storage and are easy to handle; for example, they can be cut to size with scissors. When in use, the highly swellable HEC polymer allowed the films to rapidly absorb aqueous analyte solutions while simultaneously releasing the Ag nanoparticle aggregates to interact with the analyte and generate large SERS signals. Either the films could be immersed in the analyte solution or 5 mu L droplets were applied to the surface; in the latter method, the local swelling caused the active area to dome upward, but the swollen film remained physically robust and could be handled as required. Importantly, encapsulation and release did not significantly compromise the SERS performance of the colloid; the signals given by the swollen films were similar to the very high signals obtained from the parent citrate-reduced colloid and were an order of magnitude larger than a commercially available nanoparticle substrate. These "Poly-SERS" films retained 70% of their SERS activity after being stored for 1 year in air. The films were sufficiently homogeneous to give a standard deviation of 3.2% in the absolute signal levels obtained from a test analyte, primarily due to the films' ability to suppress "coffee ring" drying marks, which meant that quantitative analysis without an internal standard was possible. The majority of the work used aqueous thiophenol as the test analyte; however, preliminary studies showed that the Poly-SERS films could also be used with nonaqueous solvents and for a range of other analytes including theophylline, a therapeutic drug, at a concentration as low as 1.0 x 10(-5) mol dm(-3) (1.8 mg/dm(3)), well below the sensitivity required for theophylline monitoring where the target range is 10-20 mg/dm(3).

The present project was a systematic investigation of the physico-chemical properties and catalytic activity of some transition metal promoted sulphated zirconia systems. The characterisation and catalytic activity results were compared with that of pure Zr02 and simple sulphated zirconia systems. Sulphated zirconia samples were prepared by a controlled impregnation technique. In the case of metal incorporated systems, a single step impregnation was carried out using required amounts of sulphuric acid and metal salt solutions. As a preliminary step, optimisation of calcination temperature and sulphate content was achieved. For further studies, the optimised sulphate loading of 10 ml per gram of hydrous zirconium oxide and a calcination temperature of 700°C was employed. Metal incorporation had a positive influence on the physico-chemical properties. Vapour phase cumene conversion served as a test reaction for acidity. Some industrially important reactions like Friedel-Crafts reaction, phenol hydroxylation, nitration, etc. were selected to test the catalytic activity of the prepared systems.

Zusammenfassung (deutsch) Seit den 1980iger Jahren wächst die Bedeutung der sog. Bildschaffenden Methoden für die Bestimmung der Qualität ökologischer Produkte. Zu diesen Methoden gehört die Biokristallisation, Steigbild und Rundfilter-Chromatographie. Die Ergebnisse dieser Methoden sind Bilder, die anhand definierter Kriterien ausgewertet werden. Bei der Biokristallisation sind es mehr oder weniger geordnete Kristallisationen auf einer Glasplatte, bei dem Steigbild zweidimensionale Strukturen auf Chromatographiepapier. In der Vergangenheit wurden die Bilder von Spezialisten ausgewertet, die nach einer längeren Schulung produktspezifische Kriterien entwickelt hatten. Im Gegensatz zur Dünnschicht-Chromatographie, wo der einzelne Stoff von der Matrix separiert wird, ist das Ziel beim Steigbild, Strukturen der möglichst ganzen Probe zu erzeugen. Die Methode wurde von Kolisko in den 1929iger Jahren entwickelt, wobei eine Kombination aus Chromatographieprozess und Metallkomplexreaktionen genutzt wurde. Die Firma WALA entwickelte die Methode für die Kontrolle ihrer Produkte und setze Silbernitrat und Eisensulfat ein. Bisher wurde die Methode qualitativ beschreibend ausgewertet, wobei einzelne Bildelemente und deren Interaktion beschrieben wurden. Deshalb musste für die vorliegende Arbeit Auswertungsmethoden entwickelt werden, mit denen auch eine statistische Bearbeitung der Ergebnisse möglich ist (nominale Unterscheidung von proben anhand der Bilder). Die Methode wurde bisher in einer Reihe von Studien eingesetzt (u.a. die Unterscheidung von Produktionsweisen). Obwohl die Bilder nur qualitativ ausgewertet wurden, konnten geschulte Prüfpersonen Proben aus verschiedenen Anbausystemen anhand der Bilder trennen. Die Ergebnisse wurden aber nicht so dokumentiert, dass sie den Erfordernissen internationaler Standardnormen für Laboratorien genügten. Deshalb mussten für diese Arbeit zunächst die Prozeduren dokumentiert und eine systematische Untersuchung zu den Einflussgrößen durchgeführt werden. Dazu wurde die visuelle Bildauswertung entwickelt und standardisiert. Die visuelle Bildauswertung basiert auf morphologischen Kriterien der Bilder von den untersuchten Weizen- und Möhrenproben. Ein Panel aus geschulten Personen entwickelte dann die Kriterien und legte sie anhand von Referenzbildern fest. Die Bilder der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden mit der einfach beschreibenden Prüfung ausgewertet, wie sie aus der sensorischen Prüfung von Lebensmitteln übernommen werden konnte. Mit geschulten und ungeschulten Prüfpersonen wurden Weizenproben und verschiedene Möhrensäfte mit der sog. Dreiecksprüfung ausgewertet (von ISO 4120). Alle Laborprozeduren wurden dokumentiert. Mit der Anwendung dieser Prozeduren wurden Vergleichsversuche mit Laboren in Dänemark und Holland (BRAD, LBI) durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse waren sowohl für Weizen- als auch für Möhrenproben vergleichbar, wobei alle drei Labore zwischen jeweils zwei Proben unterscheiden konnten. Die systematische Untersuchung zu den Einflussgrößen zeigte, dass das Unterscheidungsvermögen der Methode vor allem von den klimatischen Bedingungen während der Steigphasen beeinflusst wird. Auch die Präkonditionierung der Papiere hat einen großen Einfluss, während die Wasserqualität (ultra-filtriert, de-ionisiert, destilliert) eine untergeordnete Bedeutung hat. Für Weizen- und Möhrenproben wurde sowohl die Wiederholbarkeit als auch die Reproduzierbarkeit getestet. Die Unterschiede in den Bildern der verschiedenen Proben waren dabei immer größer als die Variation durch Proben- und Bildwiederholung und das Labor. Die so charakterisierte Methode wurde auf kodierte Proben von definierten Feldversuchen und auf Marktproben (Paarvergleich von Anbausystemen ökologisch und konventionell) angewandt, wobei als Ergebnis mehr als 90% der Proben mit der einfach beschreibenden Prüfung anhand der Bilder unterschieden werden konnten. Die Auswertung mit der Dreiecksprüfung zeigte, dass sowohl Sorten und Verarbeitungsschritte (Saft) als auch Anbauweisen signifikant getrennt wurden. Darüber hinaus wurde die Methode auch erfolgreich auf Apfelproben angewandt. Weitere Untersuchungen müssen zeigen, ob sich das Potential der Methode, verschiedene Fragen wie die Authentizitätsprüfung von Lebensmitteln verifizieren lassen.
