The Leg 173 Site 1067 and 1068 amphibolites and metagabbros from the west Iberia margin exhibit variable whole-rock compositions from primitive to more evolved (Mg numbers = 49-71) that are generally incompatible trace and rare earth element enriched (light rare earth element [LREE] = 11-89 x chondrite). The Site 1067 amphibolites are compositionally similar to the basalts reported at Site 899 from this same region, based on trace and rare earth element contents. The Site 1068 amphibolites and metagabbros are similar to the Site 899 diabases but are more LREE enriched. However, the Sites 1067 and 1068 amphibolites and metagabbros are not compositionally similar to the Site 900 metagabbros, which are from the same structural high as the Leg 173 samples. The Leg 173 protoliths may be represented by basalts, diabases, and/or fine-grained gabbros that formed from incompatible trace element-enriched liquids.

General global cooling over the Neogene has been modulated by changes in Earth's orbital parameters. Investigations of deep-sea sediment sequences show that various orbital cycles can dominate climate records for different latitudes or for different time intervals. However, a comprehensive understanding of astronomical imprints over the entire Neogene has been elusive because of the general absence of long, continuous records extending beyond the Pliocene. We present benthic foraminiferal d18O and d13C records over the past 23 Ma at Ocean Drilling Program Site 1148 in the northern South China Sea and construct an astronomically tuned timescale (TJ08) for these records based on natural gamma radiation and color reflectance data at this site. Our results show that a 41 ka cycle has dominated sediment records at this location over the Neogene, displaying a linear response to orbital forcing. A 100 ka cycle has also been significant. However, it is correlated nonlinearly with Earth's orbital variations at the 100 ka band. The sediment records also display a prominent 405 ka cycle. Although this cycle was coherent with orbital forcing during the Oligocene and the early Miocene, it was not coherent with Earth's orbital variations at the 405 ka band over the whole Neogene. Amplification of Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere glaciation since the middle Miocene may be responsible for this change in sedimentary response. Our benthic foraminifera d18O and d13C records further exhibit amplitude variations with longer periods of 600, 1000, 1200, and 2400 ka. Apparently, these cycles are nonlinear responses to insolation forcing.

Diatoms were studied quantitatively in six latest Quaternary (~70 kyr B.P. to Recent) piston cores from the westernmost Mediterranean, the Alboran Basin, and the Atlantic region immediately to the west of the Straits of Gibraltar. The Atlantic cores completely lack diatoms. In the Alboran Basin, diatoms are common from late Stage 3 (~27.5 kyr B.P.) to Termination lb (9 kyr B.P.) and in Recent core tops, but are absent in the other latest Quaternary intervals. Maximum accumulation of diatoms and highest abundance of species normally in sediments associated with increased productivity occurred during the latest Quaternary deglaciation, in the first phase of Termination I (~14.8 kyr B.P.). In the modern Alboran Basin, a region of high biological productivity occurs immediately east of the Gibraltar Straits. This high productivity results from upwelling associated with the interaction between the Atlantic inflow and the bottom topography near the Spanish coast. The upwelled nutrient-rich waters are then advected to the east and southeast by the surficial anticyclonic gyral circulation. Late Quaternary variations in diatom abundance are considered to reflect changes in this upwelling intensity with highest diatom abundances inferred to result from increased upwelling associated with an intensification of the anticyclonic gyral circulation. Highest inferred upwelling rates occurred during the first phase of latest Quaternary deglaciation. It is possible that an intensification of circulation within the Mediterranean Basin as a whole occurred from late Stage 3 to mid Termination I because widespread hiatus formation has been reported at this time in the Straits of Sicily due to an increase in the formation of intermediate waters. Diatoms were not preserved in other latest Quaternary intervals due to insufficient productivity to counterbalance their dissolution.

The Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) is a key player in global-scale oceanic overturning processes and an important conduit for heat, fresh water, and carbon transport. The AAIW past variability is poorly understood mainly due to the lack of sedimentary archives at intermediate water depths. We present records of benthic stable isotopes from sediments retrieved with the seafloor drill rig MARUM-MeBo at 956 m water depth off northern Chile (GeoB15016, 27°29.48'S, 71°07.58'W) that extend back to 970 ka. The sediments at this site are presently deposited at the boundary between AAIW and Pacific Deep Water (PDW). For previous peak interglacials, our results reveal similar benthic d13C values at site GeoB15016 and of a newly generated stack of benthic d13C from various deep Pacific cores representing the "average PDW." This suggests, unlike today, the absence of AAIW at the site and the presence of nearly pure PDW. In contrast, more positive d13C values at site GeoB15016 compared to the stack imply a considerable AAIW contribution during cold phases of interglacials and especially during glacials. Besides, we used three short sediment cores to reconstruct benthic d13C values from the AAIW core during the last glacial and found a d13C signature similar to today's. Assuming that this was the case also for the past 970 kyr, we demonstrate that sea level changes and latitudinal migrations of the AAIW formation site can only account for about 50% of the full range of past d13C increases at site GeoB15016 during cold periods. Other processes that could explain the remaining of the positive d13C anomalies are increases in glacial AAIW production and/or deeper convection of the AAIW with respect to preceding interglacials.

From X-ray mineralogical studies and chemical analyses of the whole rocks and the fine fractions (<2 µm) of ten to fifteen samples at each site of ODP Leg 124, two major sources were identified in the sedimentary components of the Celebes and Sulu basins: (1) a terrestrial and continental contribution; (2) a volcanic influx that gives way to well-defined volcanic units or to a dilute contamination, consisting of coarse-grained minerals (Plagioclase, pyroxene, olivine, spinel) or a smectitic-rich fraction produced by the alteration of volcanic glasses and ashes. The continental signature increases the amount of quartz in the rocks and the phyllitic association is complex: micas, kaolinite, disordered interstratified clay-minerals. The chemical compositions of the bulk rocks and the fractions <2 µm are more potassic and aluminum-rich. The volcanic imprint depends on the grain-size and chemical properties of the components. Ca/Na contents highly variable compared to the K content of the bulk composition are due to the presence of coarse-grained volcanic Plagioclase. The fractions <2 µm are more magnesian than in the continental regime. The diagenesis is revealed by the crystallization of zeolites, the fixation of magnesium into the smectites that depletes the pore fluids in this element. Smectitization of the disordered interstratified clay minerals enriches the alkalinity of the pore fluids. Some deep formations of the Sulu Basin are affected by a thermal event, but no thermal event was recognized in the Celebes Basin.

Small-scale shear zones are present in drillcore samples of abyssal peridotites from the Mid-Atlantic ridge at 15°20'N (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 209). The shear zones act as pathways for both evolved melts and hydrothermal fluids. We examined serpentinites directly adjacent to such zones to evaluate chemical changes resulting from melt-rock and fluid-rock interaction and their influence on the mineralogy. Compared to fresh harzburgite and melt-unaffected serpentinites, serpentinites adjacent to melt-bearing veins show a marked enrichment in rare earth elements (REE), strontium and high field strength elements (HFSE) zirconium and niobium. From comparison with published chemical data of variably serpentinized and melt-unaffected harzburgites, one possible interpretation is that interaction with the adjacent melt veins caused the enrichment in HFSE, whereas the REE contents might also be enriched due to hydrothermal processes. Enrichment in alumina during serpentinization is corroborated by reaction path models for interaction of seawater with harzburgite-plagiogranite mixtures. These models explain both increased amounts of alumina in the serpentinizing fluid for increasing amounts of plagiogranitic material mixed with harzburgite, and the absence of brucite from the secondary mineralogy due to elevated silica activity. By destabilizing brucite, nearby melt veins might fundamentally influence the low-temperature alteration behaviour of serpentinites. Although observations and model results are in general agreement, due to absence of any unaltered protolith a quantification of element transport during serpentinization is not straightforward.

We present composite depth scales for the multiply cored intervals from Sites 1150 and 1151. These new depth scales place coeval strata recovered in cores from different holes at a single site into a common stratigraphic framework. At Site 1150, double coring between Holes 1150A and 1150B occurred over only a short interval between ~703 and 713 meters below seafloor (mbsf), but this is sufficient to tie the upper portion of the stratigraphic section cored in Hole 1150A to the lower portion cored in Hole 1150B. The upper ~100 m of the sedimentary section at Site 1151 was double cored with the advanced piston corer and partially cored with the rotary core barrel, resulting in the complete recovery of this interval. The composite depth scales were constructed using Splicer software to vertically adjust the relative depths of various cores from one hole to the depths from another hole so as to align distinct physical properties measured on cores. The magnetic susceptibility data was the physical property most easily correlated between holes, and therefore primarily used to create a composite depth scale and spliced stratigraphic section. The spliced section is a continuous stratigraphic section constructed from representative cored intervals from the holes at a site. Both the splice and the composite depth scale can be applied to other data sets from Site 1151 to provide a stratigraphically continuous and laterally consistent basis for interpreting lithologic features or data sets. The resulting composite scale showed a 30% improvement in correlation of the magnetic susceptibility data relative to the original mbsf depth scale, and comparable improvement when applied to the other data sets.

This study addresses the problem of diagenetic fractionation of d15N in sedimentary organic matter by constructing isotopic mass balances for the sedimentary nitrogen and pore water ammonium at two Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sites, 1227 and 1230. At Site 1230, ammonium production flux integrated through the sedimentary column indicates that >60% of organic matter is lost to decomposition. The d15N of pore water ammonium is <0.7 per mil different from that of the sedimentary organic matter, which implies that very little isotopic fractionation is associated with degradation of organic matter at this site. The constant d15N of the solid-phase sedimentary nitrogen through the whole profile supports this conclusion. Atomic C/N ratios (9-12) indicate that organic matter at this site is primarily of marine origin. At Site 1227, the sedimentary organic matter appears to be a mixture of terrestrial and marine components. Ammonium is ~4 heavier than the organic matter. The observed isotopic enrichment of pore water ammonium relative to the sedimentary nitrogen might indicate either the preferential decomposition of isotopically heavier marine fraction of the organic matter, or possibly, a nonsteady-state condition of the ammonium concentration and d15N profiles. Interpretation of the results at Site 1227 is further complicated by the contribution of ammonium with d15N of ~4 per mil that is diffusing upward from Miocene brines.
