This paper demonstrates, following Vygotsky, that language and tool use has a critical role in the collaborative problem-solving behaviour of school-age children. It reports original ethnographic classroom research examining the convergence of speech and practical activity in children’s collaborative problem solving with robotics programming tasks. The researchers analysed children’s interactions during a series of problem solving experiments in which Lego Mindstorms toolsets were used by teachers to create robotics design challenges among 24 students in a Year 4 Australian classroom (students aged 8.5–9.5 years). The design challenges were incrementally difficult, beginning with basic programming of straight line movement, and progressing to more complex challenges involving programming of the robots to raise Lego figures from conduit pipes using robots as pulleys with string and recycled materials. Data collection involved micro-genetic analysis of students’ speech interactions with tools, peers, and other experts, teacher interviews, and student focus group data. Coding the repeated patterns in the transcripts, the authors outline the structure of the children’s social speech in joint problem solving, demonstrating the patterns of speech and interaction that play an important role in the socialisation of the school-age child’s practical intellect.

A large archive of sources for the RDS classical music recitals is extant in the Society’s Library, Ballsbridge, Dublin. The recitals were established in 1886 for the promotion of chamber music and in order to expose Dublin audiences to the works of the great composers. Extant in the collection are minute books; autographed programmes; newspaper cuttings which include previews, reviews and advertisements; correspondences with artists and agents; promotional material; selections of photographs; records of attendance, artists fees and takings; and volumes of printed music.
This paper will document the organisation, management and occurrence of the RDS classical music recitals for the period 1925 to 1950 and will encompass the opening of the current concert hall (The Members’ Hall, 1925), the Society’s bi-centenary celebrations (1931) and the continuance of the recitals within the context of the Second World War (1939- 45). The paper will examine and analyse the following: networks, repertoire and reception.
The RDS music committee established significant links with many performers and UK-based classical music agents. Recitalists include musicians of international renown; Myra Hess, Isolde Menges, Lili Kraus, Joseph Szigeti, Leon Goossens, Sir Hamilton Harty and The Hallé Orchestra, The Catterall Quartet and many local, Dublin-based musicians; Raidió Éireann Orchestra, Dublin String Orchestra, Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra and Culwick Choral Society. The compromises and collaborations in evidence between the music committee, agents and performers resulted in the presentation of varied and well-balanced programmes featuring sonatas, quartets, trios, concerti, overtures, symphonies and songs by composers including Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn and Brahms. Works by contemporary composers including Bax, Dohnanyi, Szymanowski and Suk were also regularly performed, as were works with an Irish influence or flavour. Audiences mainly consisted of members of the Society, music students were encouraged to attend at a reduced rate and reviews were regularly published in the Irish Times, Irish Independent and Irish Press.

In total of 504 Lohmann Brown hens were used to study the influence of the initial BW of the birds and the crude protein (CP) and fat content of the diet on performance and egg quality traits from 22 to 49 weeks of age. The experiment was completely randomized with 8 treatments arranged factorially with 2 initial BW (1,726 vs. 1,987g) and 4 diets with similar AMEn (2,750 kcal AMEn/ kg) and indispensable (lys, Met+Cys, Thr, and Trp) amino acid contents.

The 2.0-Å resolution x-ray crystal structure of a novel trimeric antibody fragment, a “triabody,” has been determined. The trimer is made up of polypeptides constructed in a manner identical to that previously described for some “diabodies”: a VL domain directly fused to the C terminus of a VH domain—i.e., without any linker sequence. The trimer has three Fv heads with the polypeptides arranged in a cyclic, head-to-tail fashion. For the particular structure reported here, the polypeptide was constructed with a VH domain from one antibody fused to the VL domain from an unrelated antibody giving rise to “combinatorial” Fvs upon formation of the trimer. The structure shows that the exchange of the VL domain from antibody B1-8, a Vλ domain, with the VL domain from antibody NQ11, a Vκ domain, leads to a dramatic conformational change in the VH CDR3 loop of antibody B1-8. The magnitude of this change is similar to the largest of the conformational changes observed in antibody fragments in response to antigen binding. Combinatorial pairing of VH and VL domains constitutes a major component of antibody diversity. Conformationally flexible antigen-binding sites capable of adapting to the specific CDR3 loop context created upon VH–VL pairing may be employed by the immune system to maximize the structural diversity of the immune response.
